51 Pictures That Prove We Are Already Living In A Strange Dystopia That Lost The Plot (New Pics)
Some days, real life feels less like a modern society and more like a glitchy simulation slowly losing its settings. The strange, the soulless, and the absurd blend together so perfectly it feels like we’ve woken up inside a dystopian novel, only with no thrilling plot, just quietly unsettling everyday moments.
That’s the idea behind the sub-Reddit titled 'A Boring Dystopia,' where people share snapshots of life that are mundane, bizarre, and a little bleak. These posts are subtle, funny, and sad all at once, capturing the weird reality of a world that sometimes feels like it’s lost its script.

One funny bit - they oppose ACA because 'death panels would k**l granny' and then during covid they said that if we need to sacrifice some grannys then we should do that. Grannys were to be used as a shield to prevent access to health care and then happily offered as a sacrifice to protect commerce and undermine crisis prevention.

Probably. In the US, your insurance company can refuse to pay for care or medication if they don't think the doctor has proved it necessary. And we're not talking about stuff like they'll only pay for the generic but not the name brand. They can refuse to cover, say, insulin because the doctor didn't "prove" you have diabetes. It's f.uck.ing stupid.

U.S. Healthcare System
I've lived in the UK for 20 years and as a cancer survivor couldn't ever move back to the US. I take 7 medications a day. Because I would die without some of them all my prescriptions are free of NHS charges. In the US I would have to pay hundreds a month to survive.
Also worth noting that all prescriptions are free to over-60s :)

The World Bank warns that by 2030, climate change could drive as many as 100 million additional people into poverty. This isn’t just about numbers; it translates to families struggling with food and water insecurity, communities facing socio-economic fragility, and populations increasingly vulnerable to political instability. The effects of climate change compound existing inequalities, making the most marginalized even more at risk. From rural farmers losing crops to urban residents grappling with heat waves and water shortages, the human cost of climate change is rapidly becoming one of the most pressing social issues of our time.

That's the customer's fault for choosing online ink. My HP printer works perfectly well with ink bought from my local supermarket and no subscription required.
Our hp printer refuses to work unless we use specific, brand-name cartridges anointed in the blood of a virgin during a solar eclipse. Maybe an exaggeration but it’s spit out more cartridges than I care to think about.
Load More Replies...And that's why only non-connected printers will ever be bought by me. I have HP as well but it lacks that "feature" specifically
My Epson just did a firmware update and surprse! It only takes epson cartridges now.
If your printer was made after 2012 it most likely has Wi-Fi Direct capability. Unless you need your printer to be connected to the internet, disconnect it from your network, reset it to factory settings and reconnect using Wi-Fi Direct. This wirelessly connects your printer directly to the device you print from without connecting to your local network. Your printer will then work without an internet connection. Wi-Fi Direct works in a similar way to Bluetooth but with a greater range and much higher data transfer speed.
Load More Replies...I too have an HP printer like this. I do NOT use thier subscription and it is connected through WiFi direct. I have no problems printing from any of my devices, including my android phone. To get around using only HP ink exclusively, I found that as long as one cartridge was HP I could use a non-HP ink in the other and it fools the printer. It cuts the cost of ink by half and usually the black ink is a little cheaper so that's where the HP cartridge goes. I have been using this printer for a few years now without any problems.
It means someone at HP disabled that individual printer, as opposed to it being automated.

I believe that it has been smoke and mirrors for the past 100 years (possibly since the Great Depression era). The USA has always shown what it wants people to see, not the reality. It's only with the rise of social media we can see the juxtaposition and wealth disparity. It's not unusual for a division of wealth in most countries, the level of disproportionate wealth and lack of support and services for those not wealthy in the US, is what makes it so terrifyingly sad.

Climate change also poses serious challenges to peace and security, especially in regions already struggling with instability. Changes in rainfall, rising seas, and shrinking natural resources can spark competition, force people to migrate, and put pressure on fragile livelihoods, increasing the risk of social unrest. In areas already affected by conflict, these climate-driven stresses can worsen or extend violence, making efforts to achieve long-term stability and peace far more difficult. Conversely, ongoing conflicts can hinder climate action, as infrastructure, energy systems, and agricultural resources are disrupted or destroyed, delaying adaptation and mitigation efforts.

The environmental toll of climate change is perhaps most striking in the Arctic. Rising global temperatures are causing Arctic sea ice to vanish at an alarming rate of nearly 13% per decade. Even more startling, the oldest and thickest ice has declined by an astounding 95% over the past three decades, drastically reshaping this fragile ecosystem. The Arctic plays a critical role in regulating the planet’s temperature, acting as Earth’s natural air conditioner. Ice reflects sunlight back into space, helping keep the planet cool, while open water absorbs heat. As the ice disappears, less sunlight is reflected, more heat is trapped, and global warming accelerates, a dangerous feedback loop that affects climates far beyond the Arctic itself.

Another major consequence of climate change is its devastating impact on biodiversity. Rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events are disrupting ecosystems worldwide. Many plant and animal species struggle to adapt to these rapid changes, leading to habitat loss, altered migration patterns, and in some cases, extinction. Coral reefs, rainforests, and wetlands, some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, are particularly vulnerable. The loss of biodiversity not only threatens the survival of individual species but also undermines the stability of entire ecosystems, which humans rely on for food, clean water, and a balanced climate.
The American Dream
In the US tho, an actor can barely be considered "rich" unless it's one of the most famous A-listers. Even if they make some good money from acting, they still have next to nothing compared to the top 1%.
The exact figure varies depending on who's reporting it, but the most you need to be in the top 1% is "only about $13 million. Most of the 99% would probably consider you rich with far less than that. The web says Van der Beek's net worth is between $3 and 8 million, with the low end seeming more likely. That he's auctioning stuff to pay medical expenses says a lot about US healthcare, but it probably also says the Van der beek is making priorities and thinks that keeping his house and investments makes the memorabilia a good choice for raising cash.

The OP question was about the declining birth rate in the USA. Actually, the birth rate has declined *throughout the industrialized countries of the world.* (Google it, you'll see.) The only countries that have a positive birth rate are in Africa and some parts of the Middle East. Nobody wants to have kids. With the birth rate the way it is now, when 100 of today's children reach retirement age, there will be 7 to 9 earners to support them. There's not much hope...for anybody: climate change, depletion of natural resources, economic collapse, natural disaster, atomic war: by 2050, if there are any humans left on the planet, the worldwide population will be down to less than a billion. (This was predicted in 1970, and so far the curves are right on track.)
But at the same time, if you're that strapped financially, what the hell are you having a kid for?
Wait a minute, that's a restaurant! Having a baby in the food preparation or serving area is a health code violation.

Well there is the issue that if people cannot afford to rent, for example, and so they live in a tent in a field, the municipality will send the police to clear off the land and give them info about homeless shelters nearby. Homeless shelters that are full, and if there's room, majority separate families to men's shelters and women's shelters, and majority do not accept pets. Service animals yes. But this whole push to get people off the street is incredibly underfunded but still enforced by police.
Yeah, it was here in Toronto. The camp provoked fire and had to be dismantled due to fire hazards as well as constant harassment of nearly living citizens by the homeless. Also, due to close proximity to Toronto's main d**g pushing area, a lot of those homeless were doing drrugs right on the street. The camp removal was very welcomed by people.

In the 2000s I paid $700/mo as half the rent for a noisy and freezing cold 2 bedroom apartment with roommate. In the 2010s I paid $1400 for a niceish 10 year old 1 bedroom apartment. In the 2020s I pay $1600 for a 1 bedroom built in the '70s and it's very very mid. Rent has never been less than 50% of my income, but that house in the '90s only cost 30% of my Dad's income and our incomes are comparable.
Taxes are a problem. Mine just went up 50%. What does that do for rent prices?
Load More Replies...I don't think it is a coincidence that homes got smaller as the population doubled. The problem is people not adjusting. Everyone has nostalgia for a single family home with a white picket fence and that just isn't feasible anymore. The nuclear family needs to expand into bigger groups. It isn't a good way to organize society anymore.
Hard times make strong people. Strong people make good times. Good times make weak people. Weak people make hard times. Guess where we’re at?
My rent in my very old apartment is 40% of my income. There are no granite countertops, no stainless steel appliances, no washer and dryer. If I didn't have a little money saved I would be homeless. I worked for 42 years. At least I have a roof over my head but not much else.
By the time we hit 2030 we'll be claiming a 6' x 6' space in a homeless park. The government better get their s**t together cause we're gonna need a lot of "homeless parks"!
That's A Weird Way Of Saying Price Gouging
On the off chance Zig actually wants an answer: People are mad because these companies just admitted they were price gouging. They raised prices for no reason, and now they're lowering them because their attempted price gouging didn't work out. People are mad because they got jerked around. We're getting tired of that.
Many, MANY companies took advantage of price increases and economical issues during the pandemic. They didn't want to get left behind while everyone else was gouging the public. They answered to their stockholders not to ethics. I worked for a corporation that laid people off and raised prices more than necessary, then bragged about record breaking profits quarter after quarter.
That's not a complaint about price reduction. It's an observation that the price reduction is further indication that they prices were too. dªmnɛd. high.

Depends where you are. It is safe to eat in the UK, doesn’t mean it’s palatable.
Load More Replies...I know people struggle financially, but does anyone actually eat pet food? I can make a delicious simple pasta dish for two people for about $2.50.
There's a lot more money involved before you get to even buying that 2.50 in food. You have to have secure housing, that takes money. You have to have pots, pans, plates, bowls, utensils, kitchen tools, somewhere to store the food before you cook and any leftovers. You have to have a working stove/cooktop, you probably need your electric bill and or gas bill paid to do this. People forget there's all this "infrastructure" for cooking, and plenty of poor and struggling people don't have that. They don't even own a can opener. A lot of the cheap cookware falls apart, so it eventually needs to be replaced.

Load More Replies...In the US, in order for an animal to be "safe" enough to be considered for human consumption, it has to stand on its own legs for at least 30 seconds at the slaughterhouse. All other animals who cannot are sent for let food. It's safer to feed our pets jars of baby meats or make their own kibble from human foods, than it is to give our pets pet food. Cheap cat food fed to boy kitties causes crystals to build up in their bladder and eventually those crystals will cause painful urine blockage. It shouldn't even be legal for the cheapest cat foods to be sold knowing it causes damage to male cats. Also, if our legislators on both sides of the aisle hadn't been controlled by lobbyists and sold us all our decades ago, we wouldn't have food and medicines that literally poison us. For example, originally psych meds were never intended to be taken long term beyond 4-6 wks, but now doctors tell us it takes at least that long to get used to the med. ("Anatomy of an epidemic" explores this issue)

Well to be fair that is not necessary contradictionary. In a lot of countries essential workers e.g. police, fire men, etc are not allowed to strike and that does not mean they are not allowed to be in an union.
So you're allowed in a union as long as that union isn't allowed to do the things a union is for...
Load More Replies...Anyone who thinks this means he wasn't pro-union probably doesn't have a clue about what actually happened. Following the recommendation of a national mediation board, Biden imposed a cooling off period that prevented a strike for 30 days. 3 of 12 unions accepted a deal in 2 weeks and some of the others accepted deals by the end if the 30 days, at which point a strike was no longer prohibited. The whole thing was settled a couple of months later. It's also important to realize that this was at the end of the pandemic when supply chains were already having major problems.
Both of those things could actually be true, assuming arguendo that every other POTUS was ragingly anti-union...
Or maybe it's just a case of a tweet telling you only a tiny part of the story and you not knowing enough to know.

But even if you ordered two of them, that's only $5 and that's still cheaper than one Big Mac or Quarter Pounder at McDonald's.
An Ad Targeting Lonely People Desperate Enough To Meet With Strangers For The Holidays
I don't understand the language used here. Why is is "desperate" for folks to want to join others that host holiday meals, but not for folks that want to find a mate on dating apps? It's not in either case. It might seem weird to eat with strangers, but many a hungry person enjoys a hot meal with others at church dinners. It might seem embarrassing to some, but a lot of folks really enjoy eating dinner with others
Because it's predatory. It's coldly exploiting people's loneliness for profit.

This is just to entered the restricted 18+ section. Not the whole library.
You have to have an adult card to have unrestricted access to the use of the Internet on the public library's wifi, here in the Seattle area. All the libraries around here do this. Not books though.

There’s an easy way to do better- have a safe space for adolescents and teens that caters to them and keep adults out.
