Your new tattoo might look pretty awesome now, but have you ever wondered what it'd look like when you're older? Well, check out this list compiled by Bored Panda, to see for yourself how tattoo ink fades over time.

There are many reasons as to why this happens. The type of ink can make a big difference for example, with cheaper ink often fading much quicker than higher quality alternatives. The color of the ink makes a big difference too, as the lighter the ink, the faster it fades (remember that next time you're thinking about getting one of those white ink tattoos!). Another thing to consider is the placement of your tattoo, as this can also influence the speed with which it fades. Tattoos on areas that see a lot of activity, such as your feet and your fingers, are much more likely to fade more quickly than tattoos on your back or chest for example. Also, the tattoo design comes in play too - the smaller and more intricate the detailing is, the more chance it will get blurred years later. And never forget to search for a highly skilled and qualified tattoo artist, as he is the one who will execute the work itself.

One way to keep your tattoo looking fresh is to ensure that you follow the proper healing procedures as even the best tattoos can be affected by not taking proper care. Most tattoo parlors will advise you about this, so make sure you pay attention! Also, as tempting as it might be, don't spend too much time touching your new tattoo idea that came to life, as this can lead to discoloration and infection. Finally, if your tattoo is new then try to keep it out of the sun, and even when it's fully healed, make sure you always wear the highest SPF sunscreen on any exposed tattoos whenever you're out and about.

I mean, it is small print very close together. You know it is going to bleed a little so this was a bad call, the tattoo artist should have told them this would happen. Maybe they did..

15+ Before & After Pics Reveal How Tattoos Age Over Time

When I had decided to get the tattoo done, I knew that the area was not ideal and that the tattoo would fade at some point. I made a point to follow the aftercare instructions "to a T". My expectation was that I would have this tattoo for longer than a week.

It's called a blowout. Happens when the needle goes too deep into the skin. Fingers are very hard to do, the skin is flimsy. It could happen the most skilled artists. It's just a poor choice in placement. That's all.

Just to make it clear - difference between those pictures is 3 years, 5 times change of hair color and some photoshop in both pictures. In real, my tattoo still looks good and almost the same. Good shot but not even close to reality.

Well is it really after healing, I mean, did she put in a few pounds and lightened her hair? It looks like two different people?!? Jsing?

It's not even the same chick. The "fresh" photo has a lot less body fat than the one below (in 2 weeks? Unlikely) And the hair colour from red to blonde in 2 weeks? Also unlikely.

The "fresh" shot has no bleeding or reaction from the body?! Most tattoos appear darker when "fresh". Then they heal. This photo is merely documenting (poorly due to lighting issues others have mentioned) a completely normal and expected thing with tattoos.

Yes, but right after it healed. I have a vibrant fairy on my left shoulder, and it's still as vibrant as when I had it done, 5 years ago! Like someone said. If it doesn't hurt, then the ink didn't go deep enough, and this baby hurt like a bitch, so I know it went deep enough! :D I still think, it should be a hell of a lot brighter after it healed! Just sayin..

fresh as in just completed? Why is her skin so smooth after the work is done? Normally would show some signs of swelling or redness

Kirstin Paige

Yeahhhhh this is quite the deceptive comparison here. In the bottom picture, the entire tattoo is getting blasted with light, and it doesn’t help that her skin is so fair. Also tbh it looks almost like there was some intentional blurring done in the bottom photo as well...

Kassia Pavlis

While i got my tattoo (oldschool mermaid) my tattoo artist was really sad/frustrated with the water collor tattoo trend. He told me they are nit long lasting tattoos because yiu can t use really saturated collors. But people still got then done. And now they are complaining about it... Goos artist tell you what a good tattoo is about.

Nicole Grindel

I don’t think it’s the same girl. The backs are too different. The hair would take a lot longer to go from red to natural brown. The arms are different. Unless this is years later and not just after heeling.

She really screwed up on the healing process. I'm guessing she didn't moisturize properly (3-5 times a DAY when it's new), picked off the scabbing (pulls ink out of the skin) and went out in the sun while it was healing. This is her own fault - nothing to do with her artist.

Cheryl Birkhimer

I had been thinking of getting the watercolour effect as a tattoo, but the artist advised against as he said that clearly defined lines will work best and the tattoo will last and be more defIned, also said that the watercolour look fades very fast.

Stacy Lauren
