Are you thinking of getting a tattoo? Your new tattoo might look pretty awesome now, but have you ever wondered what it’d look like when you’re older? There are many reasons and factors why this happens, and many answers to the question of how tattoos age.
One way to keep your tattoo looking fresh and prevent it from aging is to ensure that you follow the proper healing procedures, as even the best tattoos can be affected by not taking proper care. Most parlors will advise you about care and tattoo aging, so make sure you pay attention!
As tempting as it might be, don't spend too much time touching your new tattoo idea that came to life, as this can lead to discoloration and infection. If your tattoo is new, then try to keep it out of the sunlight, even when it’s fully healed. Make sure you always moisturize your skin with the highest SPF sunscreen on any exposed tattoos whenever you’re out and about - this is a huge reminder for male tattoo owners :D
Finally, never forget to search for a highly skilled and qualified tattoo artist, as he is the one who will execute the work, making sure you won't regret it. Now scroll down below to find how some of the old tattoos look today—not all of them stood the test of time.
What Happens to Tattoos Over Time?

When it comes to aging, the type of tattoo ink can make a big difference; for example, cheaper ink often fades much quicker than higher-quality alternatives.
The color of the ink makes a big difference, too, as the lighter the ink, the faster it fades (remember that next time you’re thinking about getting one of those white ink tattoos!). Another thing to consider is your tattoo's placement, as this can also influence the speed of fading.
Tattoos on areas that see a lot of activity, such as your feet and fingers, are much more likely to fade than tattoos on your back or chest, for example. Also, the design comes into play—the smaller and more intricate the tattoo’s detailing is, the more likely it is to get blurred years later.

Aged Tattoo
The person didn't take care of that piece right. I can't remember this tattooers name but all his work is amazing. This a client doing poor after care for sure.
Tbh this looks way better aged, like the artist knew how it’d age and intentionally inked it to look like a realistic charcoal sketch
There are several causes and reasons why your tattoos WILL fade. The main reason is getting older and AGING. Our skin breaks down continually which over time, makes your tattoos look faded and washed out. Several factors can speed up this process. Overexposure in the sun, which speeds the rate of skin breakdown and aging. And a lack of daily skincare to maintain proper hydration and moisturization. Now other factors that will affect the rate of how fast your tattoos will start looking faded, are improper aftercare; poor quality tattoo ink; specific body parts; and a tattoo artists' skills or lack thereof. Also, the more skin exposure with wear & tear will cause a higher skin turnover and a faster rate of tattoo fading. And on a final note, nutrition. Poor nutrition will lead to faster aging skin.

All of these are going to look better brand new, there's no layer of healed skin over them.... moisturizer and they will pop again.
The thing people seem to be missing is that if you want to keep them looking good you need to take care of them. I have one and it's been 6y
Tattoo 4 Years Later
I don't know much about tattoos. Does it have to do something with the quality of the ink?
Maybe or a lot of sun exposure? I have tattoos much older than this that look way better.
Load More Replies...The arm is clearly in focus, the veins are clearly visible. This is just how tattoos look after a few years, like absolute crap because they are crap and only crap people get them.
The arm is clearly in focus, you can clearly see the veins of the person, if it wasn't in focus then the veins wouldn't be in focus either... they are in focus. This is just how tattoos look after you've had them a few years. Like crap.
All about how you care for your tattoo. Avoid direct sunlight over longer periods with a strong suncream. My first sleeve i got 10 years ago and its just as fresh as after 2 months. Now i have full body. Too many overcreame new tattoos.
Fresh And Aged Tattoo
Watercolor sucks. A lot of tattoo artists go too light handed and don't go down far enough. When it didn't hurt much at all, it won't stay as much
Yeah, this brushstroke style is notorious for dropping out because is not contained within black lines.
The issue with water color tattoos and soft shaded inks is they will not only fade more quickly from washing or being in the sun but the ink is not placed as deep in the skin as you would regular lined tattoos or deep shading so the skin will shed out the inks. It also depends on how well you take care of it.
Watercolor can be done successfully when the Artist is truly skilled! Research...u get what u pay for.
This tattoo is particularly trashy-lookin. Weak, ill-conceived & rather poorly done. Looks like a big mistake in the "later" photo.
Intricate Tattoo 10 Years Later
I mean, it is small print very close together. You know it is going to bleed a little so this was a bad call, the tattoo artist should have told them this would happen. Maybe they did..
It could work well, but with a smaller needle. The blue you see behind the letters is because the needle went too deep
Load More Replies...This was doomed from the start, the tattoo artist should have advised that this would not age well.
I agree. Unless the client insisted. It looks like two trails of tar haha. XD
Load More Replies...This is why you do not get small print or have your lettering very close together. Also, you can see this person gets sun exposure on the tattoo since their arm is tanned. That can help cause bleed out and fading.
Looks like what my eyesight is with glasses on the left, and without glasses on the right! :-)
Mine is exactly the same. My tattoo artist didn't tell me but I'm also not surprised. It's just a shame the writing is now unreadable.
Some better sense of scale would be nice, and maybe a properly focused shot? Yes, the small, detailed lettering seems to have smudged or spread or whatever, but we can't even tell how small the lettering really is.
My tatooist told me to think of a black tattoo as a sharpie on homemade paper. It will bleed if it is too close together, too small, too large for the area, etc
Aged Finger Tattoo
When I had decided to get the tattoo done, I knew that the area was not ideal and that the tattoo would fade at some point. I made a point to follow the aftercare instructions "to a T". My expectation was that I would have this tattoo for longer than a week.
It's called a blowout. Happens when the needle goes too deep into the skin. Fingers are very hard to do, the skin is flimsy. It could happen the most skilled artists. It's just a poor choice in placement. That's all.
Sylvia is right, this is not a blowout. A blow out is exactly what it sounds like, the ink in the neat, straight lines "blows out" and spreads out from the original location. It literally looks like the ink is spreading and bleeding outwards. This is caused from all the wear and tear, washing, bending, creasing, and rubbing that our hands and fingers go through.
Load More Replies...Hummmmm......Same peeling nail polish and less polish in the photo ........
Skin wears on hands and feet. Tattoo artists will tell you that first thing
My tattoo artist told me that he doesn't do finger tattoos at all because they fade really fast and can't really be inked again.
Why not? I'm just curios as I think wedding ring tattoos are nice. You can't touch them up?
Load More Replies...Back Tattoo After Healing
Just to make it clear - difference between those pictures is 3 years, 5 times change of hair color and some photoshop in both pictures. In real, my tattoo still looks good and almost the same. Good shot but not even close to reality.
Red hair dyes washes out of hair VERY quickly due to the molecule size. I've had temp red dye last one wash before.
Load More Replies...It's not even the same chick. The "fresh" photo has a lot less body fat than the one below (in 2 weeks? Unlikely) And the hair colour from red to blonde in 2 weeks? Also unlikely.
The "fresh" shot has no bleeding or reaction from the body?! Most tattoos appear darker when "fresh". Then they heal. This photo is merely documenting (poorly due to lighting issues others have mentioned) a completely normal and expected thing with tattoos.
I'm calling BS on this tattoo because the black outline on both tattoos do not match.
Not to mention, did she put on a few lbs? And lighten her hair that well? It looks like an entirely different person.
Maybe the "after" picture was taken not just after healing but after some time.
Load More Replies...Well is it really after healing, I mean, did she put in a few pounds and lightened her hair? It looks like two different people?!? Jsing?
Tattoo 4 Years Later
Why are ppl saying this is not the same tattoo? (I am genuinely asking.) They look the same. The picture is just taken from a different angle as far as I can tell.
Skin changes over time, people gain and lose weight, different sized photo, different angle, same tattoo
The dementions look different and the top part now looks lopsided, the bottom of the key is smaller
It looks like the skin is twisted in the older pic, they still have the same mole in the same place.

Interesting tribal design. A quick touch up should do the trick, that's the nice part about a tribal tattoo
It's the astrological sign for Taurus. Not tribal.

I would never have thought of it as a ring if you hadn't said so :D it's a cute little bull with his tongue out
Load More Replies...If that's supposed to be a ring through the bull's nose, the artist did it wrong - looks more like it's through the lip. But it works nice as a tongue!
Uhhh gee I wonder why the lighting is always so s****y in the selected “after” pictures? Whoever made this whole mash-up obviously has some kind of weird agenda. Haha
Indeed, that looks like linear fluorescent light (feh)

what concern me most is the dramatic change in skintone. Was this a Micheal Jackson tattoo?
These tattoos were not done properly. I've had a tattoo for 20 years and it has NOT blurred and has faded very little
The pattern in these tattoos is subtle shading turns to blur later
Detailed Tattoo After Healing
There is a part of a tattoo under the after healing picture that is not in the first! The details do not match up! It looks like an original picture and someone who got a copy of it done on them!
Load More Replies...Its not even the same tat. Theres bits missing from the left hand photo, like over the shoulder area, the hair over the face and some detail at the bottom, also the eyes are a different shape.
It´s a different tattoo, and it´s simple to prove. Look at the bottom on the right one (the "healed). Theres a spider tattoo that was just not there in the fresh version? Makes no sense. In my opinion, the right one it´s a copy of the tattoo on the left, in poor quality made by a not so good professional.
Not the same tattoo...The hair parted and hanging is different, the overlapped teeth in the front are lined up in right photo, some of the wrinkles are missing, and the hair hanging on the right side of the face is arranged diferently. Sorry...busted!
i could be wrong but wouldn't the glassy white eyes have almost disappeared instead of becoming a bright yellow as well?

The dark tone of the current one actually compliments the fact that it should represent an ancient Celtic symbol. Giving it a touch-up would be nice, but won't be all that necessary
i'm curious, i'm not a tattoo artist, how would you touch it up? go in with white ink to re-establish spacing or..... ?
Load More Replies...I am the owner of this tattoo! I actually had it laser removed - took three years and over 20 laser sessions but it’s finally gone.
After 15 years it does look a bit flat, very one dimensional. Must say I liked the fresh one better.
I'd say if it was touched up, but with white ink in the spaces, it would look better than before
I like how the ink expanded but you can still see most of the details, I think this was made by a great artist :)

sunscreen, people. Reds and oranges will hot hold up to UV light.
Not even the same tattoo. Look at the angle of the tail and some of the details. These are two totally different people.
Its the same. Its just taken much closer, and depending on exactly how her head is turned it will distort some. Also lighting and a different camera all these years later will account for the difference in skin color. If I take a selfie in the bathroom mirror, then one in the livingroom, my hair and skin will look more yellow or pink depending on lighting. I might also look thinner or fatter based on angles or how I stand.
the tail is pointed different way. it's not about the angle.

That's a LOT of detail for behind the ear....not wonder it faded out!! You can't put 10 lbs of potatoes in a 5 lbs sack!!! LOL!! Tiny Aged Tattoo
Where on the body is this? Context would be great... Looks like the foot to me, which would make this fading make perfect sense.
it looks like a very small bird, i'm guessing, but by the looks of the side of the second photo, i'm gonna say it's on the top of the foot. Skin if thin there. small tattoos and thin skin.

Ridiculous, doesn't look anything like it originally did. If they wanted a boring 2 tone prison Tat I'm fairly certain they wouldn't have spent the bucks on the original.
Load More Replies...note to self, don't get tattoos with a lot of red ink, that s**t don't last.
certain brands of red and yellow pigments are known for fading. A lot of these red seem to be a specific brand of colours I am familiar with as an artist for colour bomb work, which is nice and juicy to start with, but prone to fading. I, personally, have a red in a piece of mine, on my hand, and completely uncared for over time, that is still fairly strong after 21 years. It was never as "juicy" at first, but it is still strong a couple of decades later. I am hoping the artists are talking to people about colours... I used to warn every client that yellows and whites would be gone in less than a year, so to be cautious about designing a tattoo that relied upon them
Might you share the names of those brands?
Load More Replies...Not bad for 15 years later. And I'm sure they've been in the sun and elements.
Colors actually faded quite well for these. Hands are used constantly and cleaned quite often. They also receive more sun exposure.
coansidering where this is placed this is real good for 15 years most have more fading and muddle

Jesus Christ, people, it's just a fun tattoo. It's not hurting you and no one is making you get one. Don't be nasty.
I'm wondering what she has done in order for it to wear that bad in just 6 months, I had mine when I was 18, I'm 33 now and mines only just about gone now, that's a good 12 years on show and 3 years deterioration until it completely disappeared
Generally speaking, the average lifespan for lip tats is about 6 months - 5 years due to the fact that your mouth cells regenerate much more rapidly than anywhere else on your body, so its RARE that you got that much life out of it. Congrats!

Finger Tattoos Months Later
And here I am 7years later with my finger tattoo looking much better than expected. And yes, I wash my hands very often :)
Load More Replies...I've had my finger tattoos (Boondock Saints tatts, so you get the picture) for about 7 years, and they've barely faded, even on my dominant hand. This work was either done not deeply enough, or they guy took really poor care of the tattoos. Also keep in mind that some people's skin tends to reject ink. There are a lot of possible variables here.

This person is an artist and this is in after a second hit
Load More Replies...super thin lines on their palm seems like it would definitely fade
Palms aren't the best place for a tattoo though lots of people have them. We use our hands so often that the ink fades very easily.
I'm guessing if you get the palms of your hand tattooed like this, you probably have a lot of other tattoos and know it will fade out and that's ok. I also think this is pretty cool art.
Thankfully there are people with open minds still about. Only faded due to it being hand poked and on first strike.
Load More Replies...Tattoos on palms fade really easily. I talked to my guy about getting something done, and he said that how much more they hurt, plus how quickly they fade, they aren't worth it.

I saved this one for my customers. They come in, wanting their first tattoos on the finger first. Then I tell them why I won't do it and show them this picture :D works good for me.
In the meantime she got lip injections... which was auto corrected to infections... also a possibility. XD
Yeah and just a normal intellectual response to all these pictures. If you want your tattoo to last, DO NOT GET IT ON A SPOT THAT IS ALWAYS IN CONTACT WITH OTHER STUFF. like fingers, hands or feet, or the inside of a lip.
Heel Tattoo Aging
Tattoos on the feet never last. There's too much wear on them. Wearing shoes and socks.
This is what happens when you get a foot tattoo with no outline and bright colors......
That had to hurt like crazy for no reason. And how could that fade like that in 2 weeks.
In case you're still curious 2 years later, 'm gunna say they scratched and picked at it the whole time it was healing ...plus the colours were bad choices.

Yeah these are two different tattoos. Hey, I have a finger tattoo that I got five years ago and had retouched twice, filled in with color. The color came off all three times and still the heart is not complete. It is blown out. It doesn't look how I had wanted it to. BUT. Understand that tattoos are not going to look fresh forever. Understand that the fading and changing is a part of them. If you still want it, GO FOR IT. I LOVE my finger tattoo and I always will.

Anyone else think that some of these Aged so badly because they were backyard jobs??
This looks like it was done with a sharpie. Someone paid good money for that?
Aging Of A Finger Tattoo
It seems to me that most of these are about placement and quality of the ink or workmanship. It could also be the care that people take. Using sunscreen and keeping tattoos moisturized prolongs the life of any good tat. I have some tattoos that are over 15 yrs old and they don't half as bad as any of these.

Most Popular Questions About Aging Tattoos
Despite ink changing over the years, this doesn't mean old people with tattoos look bad. We have answered some of the most popular questions about tattoo aging, so you can be more prepared.
Do Tattoos Fade Away When You Get Older?
Many people wonder what will happen to their tattoos as they age. Will they fade away or lose their vibrancy? The answer depends on several factors. Your tattoo may begin to fade due to aging skin, natural skin cell renewal, ultraviolet rays, ink quality, and poor tattoo aftercare.
Have you ever seen an old person with tattoos? As you probably noticed, they may become blurry, dull, or wrinkled, while others maintain their look longer. Generally, tattoos on old people's skin tend to fade more than on younger ones because the aging skin loses collagen and elasticity, causing it to stretch and sag.
Additionally, factors such as diet, weight gain, weight loss, and smoking can also affect the appearance of tattoos. Some tattoo styles, such as watercolor or colorful tattoos, may be more prone to fading than black or tribal tattoos.
Therefore, before getting tattoos, consider these factors and choose a design that will age well. Prevent tattoo aging by taking good care of it by applying sunscreen, moisturizing, and avoiding infections. By doing so, you can enjoy your tattoo for many years.
What Are the Possible Options to Consider With an Old Tattoo?
Ultimately, a tattoo is a part of your skin and will change as you change. You could find yourself getting a tattoo cover-up, a new tattoo that hides the old one, or a laser removal.
However, both options can be expensive, painful, and risky and may not guarantee a perfect result. A touch-up is a great way to refresh the beauty and brightness of your tattoo. Still, it should be done by a professional and experienced tattoo artist, as a bad touch-up can ruin your tattoo even more.
How Do Fine Line Tattoos Age?
Fine line tattoos are a popular tattoo style created using a single needle and has thinner and more delicate lines. This technique is often used for small tattoos or small details in larger tattoos.
However, fine line tattoos are more prone to fading, blurring, and distortion over time, leaving you with a design that looks very different from the original.
You people apparently just have s**t artists 😂😂😂 I've had some of my tattoos for over 10 years and people still ask me if they're new 🙌🏻
I find some of these hard to believe. I've had a tattoo for 8 years now and it looks as good as the day I got it. Even the artist was amazed by how good my color has held up. But then again everyone has different skin types and different methods for tattoo care.
but if your tat artist was surprised at how well it held up, doesn't that suggest they usually don't? Hence the above happens?

I've had to retouch a couple of my tats but I have one that looks like I just got it and I got it almost 20yrs ago!!! Most of these looked like s**t tattoos to begin with and depending on what part of the body it won't stand the test of time. Research your artist and check out their portfolio before getting one and then follow the after care instructions to a tee!!! Don't forget to wear sunscreen when you go out cuz the sun will damage it too. 🐧🐧
There seems to be a few things not being mentioned when it comes to right choice of tattoo and upkeep 1) 'watercolour' tattoos are the first to fade and need constant touch ups due to the delicate strokes of colour and the lack of outline 2) yellow, orange, red and pinks are the FIRST colours to fade because the human body naturally has a lot of these pigments therefore those patches will have a faster regeneration of cells 3) Placement is everything, if you go for a finger, foot, inside your mouth or, god-forbid, a tongue tattoo; it will fade incredibly fast due to how much contact those have with not only the outside world, but your own body! 5) skin is elastic, it stretches and grows over time along with us; so if you have a design with a lot of negative space and light shading, the negative space will consume the original design. On the other hand, if the negative space is too thin between solid block shading, the ink with naturally bleed into that negative space. think about it!
