Hindsight is 20/20. If you were to analyze all the things you believed were true one, five, or ten years ago, you’d see how not all of them hold up anymore. Maybe you admired a celebrity that has now fallen from grace, or bought a ticket to Fyre Festival, or believed that NFTs are a good investment. We’re all allowed to make mistakes, and we should aim to learn from them.

Still, one cannot deny that some of those mistakes are painfully hilarious, especially when they’re not ours. Looking at them can make us go “oh, honey,” and “I might act silly sometimes, but at least I’m not that stupid.”

So, if you need a little bit of that warm and fuzzy feeling of being just a little superior than everyone else, we have you covered. We are presenting to you the best of the worst of the r/agedlikemilk subreddit. Enjoy!

The worst cases of 'aged like milk' content has to be predictions. They are usually made by observing the past changes and often assuming the most likely trajectory it will continue progressing towards. They can be related to anything, from finance to political matters. Many professionals around the globe specialize in making accurate forecasts, such as business and political strategists, as well as journalists. However, they are not always correct.

In hindsight, many predictions can seem so wildly wrong even though at the time they were made, there was a chance something like that was possible. A paper on detrimental thinking patterns about the future, a.k.a. future fallacies, agrees with that. In it, the scientist Ivana Milojevic states: “Given how many predictions are made on a daily basis, it is always possible to find some that have, in retrospect, been shown to be true. At the same time, it is also always possible to find even more that have been off the mark.”

The problem with such predictions is that if genuine warnings do miss the mark, people are less likely to believe in them next time. A good way to avoid this is to drop the overconfidence when talking about the future possibilities. Add a disclaimer that whatever you’re talking about is a prediction, not a concrete fact. As readers, we also should try avoiding forecasts of know-it-all experts that are completely set on their outlooks. Instead, try to find sources that admit that things can go many different ways.

What sad values. Owning a lot of cars doesn't make you a meaningfully worthwhile person any more than having the most expensive rare stamp collection or a complete set of all Pound Puppy stuffed dolls ever made does. Lah-tee-friggin-da. Why don't you sell some cars and feed a couple starving villages, and actually make yourself useful? How pathetic.

Another future fallacy discussed in the same paper is being overly optimistic about your personal future. As in, thinking that the world will be going down the drain in the future, but you’ll be perfectly fine. A great example of it is someone who gloats when everyone else is being laid off because they believe it will not happen to them. Of course, eventually, their turn comes as well and they are flabbergasted and devastated.

We all do that, though. We tend to believe that our lives will turn out just fine, which, on one hand, is a great coping mechanism. When a situation turns sour and we break up, falter on our career path, or experience financial insecurity, we tend to believe things will turn around at some point. However, when taken to an extreme, this positive outlook can turn into denial.

It's s**t. Those who claim it isn't are either idiots, liars, or the wealthy few who personally benefitted. For the rest of us it means data / phone roaming charges when in the EU, having to fill out customs declarations just to post a parcel to the EU, having to get a visa waiver to visit the EU (soon), and being limited on how much time we can spend in the EU, as well as being limited on whether we can work in the EU or not. And that's just the things that affect the average person. People in specific circumstances are affected even more, and virtually no one but the rich has benefitted. It's so spectacularly s**t that those who voted for it are pointing to "It's not as bad as you said it would be" as the sole benefit of this shítshow. If the only benefit is "well it could be worse" you've set the bar for success pretty fúcking low.

The same kind of optimism fallacy can be seen when looking at posts that mention how many different dangerous materials were added to various beauty products back in the day. You think the moment people found out about how dangerous mercury, radium, and arsenic are, they must have shivered in horror and chucked every product that they had with it. However, of course, that wasn’t a thing.

It has a bit of a stimulant effect, but most of what the smoker experiences is just to offset the withdrawals they would otherwise experience by not smoking. It would be interesting to see if nicotine patches give an advantage, since it's just the stimulant without the reduced lung capacity that comes from smoking.

As a former Jehovah's Witness I heard hundreds of times in their meetings that "homosexuality leads to zoophilia". They have published articles in their magazines about the danger posed by homosexual men for children, and they have even reinforced that idea in recent videos, like their "broadcasts." However, the only two child molesters that I know in person are my father - a straight man who abused my half-sister when she was a child - and my uncle - a straight man who abused a cousin of mine when she was a child. The latter was one of Jehovah's Witnesses when he did this and still is. He never spent a single day in prison for what he did.

I grew up in the jw cult as well and I knew more than one jw who turned out to be a pedophile. I remember once when I was going through puberty, my mom had me go in a car by myself with older men to go preach to people. Nothing happened to me but I was really uncomfortable being alone with men I hardly knew. Especially in retrospect. One of the molesters got a slap on the wrist by the law but the one I'm related to who was an elder got away with it.

The only reason that Florida has a reputation for silly and horrible crimes is because they have no restrictions on posting mugshot photos and crime details. Other states understand that it is not fair or reasonable to do so and have laws against it. That doesn't mean that they don't have people committing these crimes, just that we're not allowed to poke fun at the mentally ill, desperate, poor, addicted, "ugly" or just plain innocent online.

I agree. I'm gay and think it was wrong for the couple to sue the bakery for refusing to make their wedding cake. I can't believe there wasn't a gay owned or friendly bakery that could do it and keep the money in our community.

Steven Crowder's Wife Is Leaving Him Without His Consent

Crowder wrote that tweet to proudly announce that his wife enjoys being treated like a servant and a sex object. Now she's divorcing him because of his abusive behavior. And suddenly consent matters. Not hers, of course, but his.

Given all the posts here supporting this, it seems people feel your husband should divorce you because you didn’t learn about consent and how it affects affection. Maybe if he doesn’t see this entry, you’ll be okay. I’ll cross my fingers for you!

Pinching the butt of your spouse shouldn't require "consent" as it seems like it would be implied by the fact that you've married the person, and in his case, has done way more than pinching considering he has twin children with her. I mean, if they tell you to stop then you should stop. But it's eye opening how many chronically online people think they know all of the details of this guy's relationship just because he's a public figure.

People are missing the point. Of course consent to touch is often implied in marriage. But, (fun fact) if you force your spouse that's rape. Nobody knows what went on that she did or didn't consent to, touch-wise. But dude was making fun of the idea of consent. Then blew a gasket when he discovered she did not need his consent to divorce him. (That part is not explained very well but comes up in the comments.). For sure, toward the end she was probably saying no and he was probably not hearing it.

People found out about many dangers of these products by the turn of the 20th century and still continued to use them. The possible reason why consumers didn’t give up on beloved but dangerous products was that it was implied that the real danger is long-time use. Many assumed using it only a little bit here and there will probably not do much harm. Optimistic, right?

    Abandon Ship

    Abandon Ship

This image glorifies Brexit and insinuates that Britain is saving itself from a "sinking ship". In reality, 10% of UK Bank assets moved or will be moving to the EU and about 440 banking and financial institutions have left the UK. The UK has suffered immensely and lost workers, decreased value of the GBP, and caused overall more harm to the UK. The UK Tory party could not keep a PM due to everyone passing the buck on what was happening and being unable to find a solution. Tories in shambles.

Every single recession in US history (including the Great Depression) was preceded by a Republican administration imposing their flawed economic policy. Each time we were pulled out by policy changes made by a Democratic administration. Our national debt has been continuously increasing ever since Nixon was in power, with the exception of during Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton's presidencies. And yet conservatives still try to say liberals are the reckless spenders ruining the economy. Lying is easy when your constituents are too poorly educated to fact check you.

The Miss Atomic Bomb Pageant, 1950 Nevada

The advances in the field of nuclear physics inspired this pageant. Today this pageant seems macabre, morbid, distasteful and disgusting, frankly. It was already horrible back then but I don’t think the American people yet knew the vast impact(no pun intended) the bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki had. Also the Cold War had yet to strike the fear of god into people.

The same optimism seems to kick in with consumers these days. There are still many people who use tanning salons, even though many studies have proven their harm. People haven’t given up on smoking, they drink diet drinks with artificial sweeteners, and use non-stick pans with forever chemicals. In other words, we can’t help but be optimistic.

Having not studied chemistry in the US, I find the discussion mesmerizing. To me, ELEMENT is a substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means (Mendeleev's periodic table). Chemical, to me, is a CHEMICAL COMPOUND, any substance composed of identical molecules consisting of atoms of two or more chemical elements (Ethanol C₂H₆O) or CHEMICAL SUBSTANCE, one that has been prepared ARTIFICIALLY (For example, polyethylene). A MINERAL is to me an inorganic substance existing in the earth's crust that is formed by one or more chemical elements (Pyrite, a mixture of sulphur/sulfur and a metal; fool's gold). So to me, Asbestos is a MINERAL, without any doubt. (Chrysotile is the most common type of asbestos, the idealized chemical formula is Mg3(Si2O5)(OH)4). Bernd Herbert, you are right!

One way to combat that kind of individualistic optimism is to promote the idea of interconnection between everybody. We all rely on one another to create a better future and we will either thrive or suffer together. Researchers also suggest using exposure to show that individuals are not immune to society’s fate. So, in a way, this list is a social contribution to the greater good.

This Cartoon Blaming School Deaths On Secular Environments - Not Meant As An Attack On Christian Schools Btw

This cartoonist implied that prayer being taken out of schools is the reason kids were dying in school. Sadly a school shooting happened in a Christian school. This post is not meant as an attack on religion.

Or, hear me out - teach the kids about the different religions. What it is meant like and what not. Allow discussions and if anything : how to respect all opinions. Maybe kids Christian / Muslim/ Atheist / other , can go to school together and learn to live together in harmony ?

God is allowed in American schools. Read your Bible, pray to your heart’s content. But public schools can’t promote religion, thereby leaving you free to practice your own—or none—without having another one forced down your throat. It’s a win-win!

Anecdotal evidence here, but I know of several instances where people were told they weren't allowed to pray to themselves in the cafeteria or read their Bible in the library because it would be offenseive. Also, football or basketball teams have been punished by the administration because they wanted to pray before/after games (some with and some without the coaches participating). The open and unabashed descrimination against Christianity specifically in American public schools is more prevalent than some may think.

Precisely, but Christians seem intent on being God's Gatekeepers. Perhaps if Christians would stop acting like they own the Copyright to a Being that has guided and inspired humanity for over 200,000 years people would be less offended by the concept of a Cosmic Creator. Christians are the direct cause of Americans rejecting God, religion should never cause Fear or create division and strife. God existed long before Christianity was invented and God will exist long after Christianity has passed into the mists of time. This is a lesson Christians need to learn. Christian doctrine has chased good honest loving people away from our Creator. You reap what you sow.

Prayer was never "taken out of schools" anyway. Staff aren't allowed to *make* the students pray or try to push religion on them in general, which is absolutely how it should be, but if a student CHOOSES to pray or read the bible or any other holy text, nobody's going to stop them as long as they do it in their free time. And anyway, isn't god all powerful and all seeing? Why would he need permission to make his presence known *anywhere*, and let alone from a bunch of underpaid educators? All this comic boils down to in the end is entitled whining from a bunch of arrogant creeps who think they should have the right to indoctrinate every kid in the country into their religion (the "correct" one, naturally. If kids were being made to read the Koran and worship Allah at school, they'd all burst a blood vessel).

Prayer was only put in schools in the first place because of conservative fears about communism spreading in America. That's when "under god" was added to the pledge of allegiance. Kids weren't shooting each other prior to 1954, so I can't help but think that the key variable causing all these shootings is the exponential increase in guns being available to kids.

Still, looking at some of these posts that have spoiled with age can make one feel a little better about the times we live in. For example, people don’t think domestic abuse is normal and likely would not dare to publicly condone it. Blackface is also rightfully considered to be deplorable and out of line. These are signs that things are getting better in our society.

There is an ancient practice that has mostly fallen off excepting in Japan and Norway IIRC called copsing where one plants new trees by drilling into this old root system. If done right the new trees will make use of the existing root structure and will supercharge the growth in order to supply enough leaves to support the roots. It used to be used commonly for growing quite straight wood as they grow almost straight up.

In the late 70s there was a diet aid also called "AYDS" they were little caramel/chocolate flavored squares. Used to sneak them from mum's room as a treat. Needless to say that brand also did not last into the 80s... (they were tasty though)

It turns out that during the course of wireless chatter someone asked: “Are the Titanic passengers safe?” An answer came: “The ship is being towed to Halifax and everyone is ok.” The only problem was that the second transmission didn’t refer to the Titanic. When reporters got wind of the story, many of them called folks along the Canadian coast to corroborate details. Misinformation then spread like wildfire.

No. People forget we didn't always have cell phones and internet. Rostron and the crew of the Carpathia were incredibly protective of the survivors. They didn't want the people who had just gone through hell being hounded before even reaching shore. The Carpathia refused to answer press inqueries. Instead of making a quick buck with an inside scoop, the telegraph operatprs helped survivors send messages to loved ones and helped facilitate communications with politicians, rescue personnel, etc. so they a) could decide where to take the survivors, and b) be prepared for people who had nowhere to go. The garbled transmissiond that were intercepted left people with incomplete info...so press often printed whatever account they heard without verifying.

Yes, but not in the sense that they knew people had died. More in the sense they knew the news they had could be wrong, but printed it anyway. That was the event that led me to stop watching wrestling. They do this huge three hour memorial show for him, then 24 hours later there's Vince on TV going "well, now that we know what really happened, we're going to pretend that Chris Benoit never existed." And boy did they ever. Even went so far as to put a sticker on any toy that he was a part of claiming him to be someone else.

It wasn't steroids, it was CTE from repeated traumatic brain injuries/concussions. Benoit had zero steroids in his body when autopsied. "Tests were conducted on Benoit's brain by Julian Bailes, the head of neurosurgery at West Virginia University, and results showed that Benoit's brain was so severely damaged it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient. He was reported to have had an advanced form of dementia, similar to the brains of four retired NFL players who had had multiple concussions, sank into depression, and harmed themselves or others. Bailes and his colleagues concluded that repeated concussions can lead to dementia, which can contribute to severe behavioral problems. Benoit's father suggests that brain damage may have been the leading cause."

CTE. It's why the WWE, NFL, etc. started getting serious about it and the doctor who blew the whistle was first resisted. In the case of the WWE, they banned several moves, shots to the head, etc. And now have doctors on hand. But during the Attitude Era, they didn't know enough and the ratings war with WCW pretty much ignored the warning signs. Bret "The Hitman" Heart had to cut his career short after a bad hit to the head, but the response was "oh well".

I mean... this is misleading because he was a nice guy. He was a nice guy who had CTE which caused him to snap. He didn't snap because he was a bad dude. He snapped because we didn't know about CTE like we do now or how getting hit in the head (or intentionally doing so) could lead to someone to do something like this. I'm not saying he's some innocent dude who didn't do anything Wrong. I'm just saying he wasn't a "mean guy" I do not believe he would have ever done this had he not had such a serious case of CTE.

Why would you need 2 full bathrooms in a 1 bedroom apartment? I've seen it a lot with expensive homes "8 bedroom 16 bathroom home for sale." I understand having a half-bathroom, or 1 bathroom per bedroom, but not the 2:1 ratio.

He and Fox "parted ways" because they were getting their ásses handed to them with legal issues and he had no desire to be roped into their garbage because despite being on the network, he clearly had some opinions that the Right didn't like and that's why he's hated by people on all sides. I also will be down voted for this, Rowling is not a TERF, she has a legitimate concern about keeping a woman's shelter strictly for those that were born a female. In my locale we've already had two 'trans-women' arrested for assault against a female, one in a pool change room, and the other in a gym change room.

I told them what I'd observed and was holding the young woman at the same time who was so scared she couldn't stop shaking. She was given anxiety meds and fell asleep. I was told that they would keep an eye on her and I had to go back to my own room. I was discharged that day and waited for a report in the news about it. Nothing. Obviously hushed up. Oh, I'm so sick of those Putinlovers. I had to work in a small town in eastern germany last year, and the amount of people happily blabbering the Kremlin's Propaganda is just astounding, saddening, strange. I'd love to not find some east-west-contrast in this, but I found anyway. Everything is the USA's fault, NATO's fault, the EU's fault, while Diktatorewitsch is said to be a victim ("circled by western nations") of contract breach (which, actually, HE does whenever he sees fit). But also, he's a strong leader of an unquestioned superpower, of which as much is true as they certainly won't be attacked by any western country whatsoever. The contracts whined about being broken by "the West" don't exist, and if they'd, they'd be overstepping the rights of many countries ... the german chancellor cannot tell the polish what they're to do and don't, or the baltic nations, or any nation at all - if they want to join NATO or EU, there's a procedure to accomplish this, and if they decide to follow through, ... well ... if russia wants to have influence, they'd better offer something better than the west. Can't? Then shut up already. It's Putin's fault that russia is in no way a more attractive partner than "the West". The West, also, wouldn't mind any and every cooperation with Russia - that only changed after last year's february.

Worked in Rostock for a few months, so here is the thing - Eastern Germany really got short end of the stick after reunification. Whole industries were asset stripped and lots of communities left to rot. And please don't mention "all the investments" of the west. They went to "friends and family" businesses which supposed to revive eastern part to the western standards, but got into the private pockets. The views you mentioned as well as "surprising" rise of AfD is a direct result of it.

I gotta admit; I was ASTONISHED at the invasion of Ukraine. I thought perhaps Russia might go for the Donbas, but surely not Kiev. NATO is throwing everything but the kitchen sink, and Russia is spent as a military force. Now Russia is claiming they only ever wanted Novorussia.. but if they hadn't invaded the rest of Ukraine, would we have ever sent the equipment for an existential battle? I never thought Putin would be so stupid.

I have the habit of immediately researching independent sources as soon as a big conflict starts because all big news media of any country immediately switches to full propaganda. It's a painful amount of work but so far I mostly got things right in the end with past conflicts. Your assumptions are in line with what western media reports, but it doesn't add up. If you calculate the numbers it can't be true because the war would already be over. As even this probably will get me downvoted into oblivion because people here would love to see Ukraine winning and hate on any suggestion that it could end different. All I'm going to say is: be very careful with any assumption. Rather write down / archive what was reported so you remember it in a year or 5 and then compare if what was said held truth or not.

Everybody even barely functioning is against leading this war. But there's one side whose leaders have the choice to end this at any given time, and likely won't face much repercussion personally - of course, no soundly made history book will ever support this war, but within Russia, and the propaganda fed to people who already have a full day to just survive and get their stuff done, or who don't care, or don't care to care, or genuinely believe their governments' statement, Putin may very well be able to retire and be left alone, effectively.

The doctor asked me why and I told her because hospitals charge an insane amount of money for everything. She just stared at me before letting me know the pharmacist would have to check them first. I watched a great YouTube video essy on this phenomenon. The take away was basically: the FBI and FCC should circulate Forbes and Biusness Week to get a heads up on who they need to be investigating.

This was ages ago, but I remember an article in Forbes where the guy got the economic concept of Law of Diminishing Returns and equated it to Returns to Scale. Apparently to defend Microsoft's monopoly.

I stopped trusting some of Forbes's ratings when I read a review of a some kitchen knives where the reviewer didn't seem to understand how knives worked. Seriously, they complained that you could not put nice chef's knives in the dishwasher. If that's what you wanted to do, don't invest in good knives and if you think dishwasher safe is a feature for kitchen knives, you aren't qualified to review them

I was at Cape Canaveral a couple of months ago. They had one half-wrecked and one partially built mobile launch platform near the giant rocket assembly building. NASA believed that the Artemis 1 SLS launch was going to destroy the platform so they started building another one for the Artemis 2 mission. After the Artemis 1 launch they were pleasantly surprised that ithe platform was only partially destroyed and are working to rebuild it.

I don't get the "blood and wine" reference as well, but The Witcher showrunners, who are bragging with this ad, seem to actually be quite inept and making a lot of wrong decisions, like deviating a lot from the original novels. That is why Henry Cavill, the show's star, is leaving, which will very likely be the death of the show.

Henry Cavill is a huge nerd, and is very knowledgeable of the book series thay The Witcher is based on. Henry was adamant that the writers follow the major plot points of the books (which is how the show was pitched to him during casting) but they wanted to take the story in a different direction that they thought would resonate more with fans. Henry refused to be a part of that, so the showrunners replaced him. The production has been a s**t-show ever since. They're giving GoT a hard time about one little set-design mishap, meanwhile they've ruined their entire franchise with a massive creative blunder.

I live in Florida, a state where beer is sold in grocery stores and gas stations. All of the beer aisles now are fully stocked with Bud Light because no one will buy it. I always think how hilariously sad it is that people really think they're making a statement by being super vocal about how proud they are that they won't buy it. What angers me, though, is when my young kids, who are learning to read, ask about all the hateful, foul-languaged bumper stickers that are rampant down here.

Must be quite depressing - shipping all the way from the Baltic Sea, almost starting a war with Britain, and then arriving in the Pacific only to be absolutely butchered at Tsushima. Well, complete incompetence tends to go that way. Then just as now.

It's uncanny how portrayals of Russian atrocities towards civilians in mainstream media turned out to be absolutely accurate in Ukraine in 2022. Of course, if you'd asked any of us from Eastern Europe, we'd have told you that immediately after WW2, or earlier, after WW1, because that's just how they have always acted. He made a video where he criticized Mr. Beast for supporting his transitioning friend Chris, saying that it'll have a negative impact on his career going forward. Sunny lost a good chunk of subscribers, a good chunk of average monthly views, and isn't seen in as high of a regard since he released that video.

If the kids want to wear high heels, surely he would buy them shoes in their size instead of having them wear ones that could hurt them from being too big? That's what my parents did for me.

Part of NYC-- the building dept is hopelessly corrupt, way undermanned, and subject to political whims-- this garage was used mostly by NYC employees, many working at City Hall, so a pass was given to the numerous code violations, until it collapsed-- Now, FDNY does a lot of the garage inspections-- and FDNY is pretty far from corrupt-- the guys actually responding to calls do the inspection

That's the real problem with him. Edward VIII marrying for love is totally cool and it was hypocritical for the Church of England to be so against divorce when it was found so Henry VIII could divorce his wife. The Nazi thing is what makes him terrible. He was king for a few months since the next person in line is automatically King or Queen when the current monarch dies.

IDK. I would consider this a near miss than aged milk. The biggest alternative (commercial) of the time was laser disc. DATs were only recently introduced. CD alternatives sort of got lost in the shuffle in all the DVD formats that were introduced a decade later.

Context: This is from the 1916 U.S. presidential election. Charles Hughes, then a former Supreme Court justice, ran against Woodrow Wilson, the Democratic incumbent. Hughes was confident, but the Republican party was divided between Progressives and Conservatives and Wilson was able to pull off a squeaker with narrow, late wins in several key states.

You say "stop the assault on truth", while staying multiple things are that are factually wrong. There are "men", even cis, whom can lactate/breastfeed, as well as menstruate, and have functional ovaries. There are also lots of "women", even cis, whom cannot. Also, based on this definition of a "woman", any cis woman who has reached menopause, would now be a man. Please, just educate yourself more in biology and medicine, and then you might finally realize that you are being this on what you want to be true, not what is actually true.

Again, I haven't really seen JK Rowling write anything transphobic yet. As a woman, I don't care what you identify as but I'd like the woman's bathroom to remain a safe space with only biological women. Before someone says that a woman can attack/assault you as well, I'm confident I'll be able to handle a woman. A man/someone once a bio man, not so much.
