As people, we are often wrong. Take cigarettes, for example: up until 1964, we didn't know there was a link between smoking and cancer. We'd do it everywhere: in restaurants, next to pregnant women, babies, and even in hospitals. Now that we know how dangerous it was, thinking of these scenarios makes us cringe.

But there are a lot of other things we used to do or think that aged pretty poorly. We here at Bored Panda have compiled a list of the most cringeworthy screenshots from the past that are almost disturbing, given what we know now. Celebrity scandals, outdated science, and generally questionable fails await you below!

To be quite fair, the average person won't know who the hell she is anyway, because they don't know her as Stefani Germanotta... but rather as her stage name of Lady Gaga. So it isn't wrong. She isn't famous, her persona Lady Gaga... is.

I don't agree with her approach and many things she says. However, women's rights, which many women fought hard to restore in the last century ARE being eroded. When one group's fight for "rights" ends up coming at the expense of a reduction in another group's "rights", then things aren't so black and white. When non-heterosexual people demanded rights, granting those rights never came at the expense of anyone else's rights. That's not true of trans people's rights. There is discussion to be had, but some brain-dead people think it's all black and white. Rowling goes to far the other way, but so do some "tolerant" people who in the end are masking and downplaying legitimate concerns, all in the name of "caring".

I agree that it's not a black and white issue, however I think your example is actually a very good one to show the opposite. Gay rights very much had pushback on the exact same basis, that giving them rights would erode other peoples. That they should not be allowed to work in education etc because parents had the right to "protect" their children from being "exposed" to such things. You had people saying that homosexuality should not be illegal, but that they should hide it and keep it behind closed doors because it is offensive in public. The right not to be treated by a homosexual doctor, not to have homosexuals serve you food etc. In the US you had the Gay Panic defense, where charges and sentencing could be reduced if the victim was gay because it was "understandable" that a straight person would react more violently to them. Every rights movement faces backlash from people saying they will lose their rights by allowing those people into their space.

the only thing she said that anyone calls "intolerant " is that Trans women shouldnt play in women's sports and that is just plain science. Unfair to girls who naturally have less strength and less muscle then men, even men on hormones. That is a fact, not a belief

    Amelia Jade
    Community Member
6 months ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

My daughter is trans. She is on HRT. That means she takes hormones so that her biological make-up is that of a woman. She is in her 20s. A blood test right now would show her hormone level, including testosterone, would be that of any typical 20 year old woman. So, how does that give her an advantage in sports? Any trans woman who has transitioned will be in the same boat. The strength and muscle of any athletic trans woman who has transitioned would be the same as any athletic woman. And if you think that is the only thing she's said against trans people, you haven't been paying attention. That is absolutely not the only thing she has an issue with.

In 2000, people might've thought that the Internet was just a passing fad. In 1995, Robert Metcalfe, the inventor of Ethernet, claimed that "the Internet will soon go spectacularly supernova and in 1996 catastrophically collapse." Even Bill Gates was wrong about some things, like the elimination of spam emails by 2006 or that passwords would become obsolete.

The truth is that we're often skeptical about technology. That skepticism usually comes from a natural fear of the unknown. "People see new technology as a potential disruptor to the way they currently do things," Rick Kowalski, Director of Industry Analysis and Business Intelligence at the Consumer Technology Association, explains.

If you were born in the 2000s, you probably don't know that Bill Cosby was once "America's Dad" and why his downfall was so controversial and disappointing to many. In the past, he was one of the highest-paid TV actors in history, but in 2005, allegations of sexual crimes started popping up.

In 2018, Cosby was sentenced to prison, although his conviction was overturned in 2021, and he has been free since. Nevertheless, over 50 women accused him of giving them illegal substances and sexual harassment.

"He does not go back to being America's Dad, everything that he lost in terms of the trappings of his life - his reputation, his TV jobs, his night club jobs, his being a spokesperson - all of that is gone," his lawyer Rikki Klieman said.

He's recently become the world's richest man who became responsible for causing the starvation deaths of the world's poorest children, by gutting USAID. He also put tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people out of work, but will still benefit massively from government grants. All sanctioned by the orange cancer you voted for.

Some people might not know that Stefani Germanotta is the real name of the pop powerhouse Lady Gaga. The Facebook group "Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous" went viral last year when Lady Gaga acknowledged it in an Instagram post. It's a group supposedly made by her NYU Tisch peers before she left in 2005 to pursue music.

Did such a group ever really exist? Currently, there's no trace of the "original" group on Facebook. Instead, there are dozens of similar ones made by Gaga fans. But journalist and fellow NYU alum Lauren Bohn claims she saw the group when she herself was a student.

Another NYU alum, Carly Waddell, said on a podcast that she wasn't a fan of Stefani while at NYU. According to her, Gaga was annoying and would "play and sing Wicked at the top of her lungs" during lunch.

If she was genuinely concerned and a good person, she might still ask for the same measures she asks for now, but she would do so with humility, and be sorry that she has to find them necessary. The original books were published in 1910-1911 and show remarkable prescience for being less than a decade after the Wright Brothers' flight. There's a Wikipedia entry with all their covers and they're available online though the Gutenberg Project. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Tom_Swift_books#The_original_Tom_Swift_series Tom_Swift_...d8d189.jpg Tom_Swift_and_His_Photo_Telephone_book_cover-682ec5cd8d189.jpg

It may not be a popular fact, but Lance Armstrong was very far from being the only cyclist using the very same drúgs for their performance. He has a lot of natural genetic advantages, including having blood that is very efficient at carrying oxygen. Other cyclists who were using the same training regimes and drúg regimes couldn't compete with his success.

If you weren't a big fan of Elon Musk in the 2010s, you might not know that he guest starred in an episode of The Big Bang Theory. Musk had cameos in many other productions, including Iron Man 2, The Simpsons, and South Park. But his cameo in TBBT now has ridiculous levels of irony, as he's seen volunteering in a soup kitchen with Howard.

I bet she has, I bet she has...

By now, the author of the Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowling, is known as a huge anti-trans advocate. Just last year, she questioned Olympic gold medalist Imane Khelif's gender. Then, she accused Paralympian Valentina Petrillo of being "a cheat."

It all started in 2017 and 2018, when Rowling "liked" some derogatory comments toward trans people on Twitter. Rowling went on many anti-trans Twitter tirades throughout the years, earning herself the title of a TERF: a trans-exclusionary radical feminist.

The stars of the Harry Potter films, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, released statements about how they disagree with Rowling. So has Eddie Redmayne, star of Fantastic Beasts, and even Warner Bros.

Smoking was the thing that could make you look instantly cool back in the day. That is, until 1951, when Sir Richard Doll, a UK scientist, made a link between cigarettes and lung cancer.

Before that, brands would use aggressive marketing to sell the idea of the coolness of smoking. Camel had a campaign with the slogan "More doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette." The famous Marlboro Man was the epitome of "cool."

The truth is, very, very few people honestly truly get climate change. In the US, Democratic politicians mostly don't get it. Teachers don't, financial advisors don't, real estate agents don't, sci fi authors don't, most people don't. Perhaps insurance companies and city planners do. When it's discussed directly, then they are all gung-ho about wanting to address it, but they don't honestly believe it. They talk about things 50 years in the future as if there is no climate change, they don't include it in their consideration of ANYTHING unless they are SPECIFICALLY talking about climate change, but it should be considered for any forecasting of any sort. This is why, even though supposedly most liberals and a good chunk of conservatives in the US SAY they know about climate change, but I believe the statistics the last 4 yrs was that only ~2% of the population said it was our number one issue. It IS OUR #1 ISSUE, perhaps closely followed by other pollution and the extinction crisis.

Nestle (he's eating a Nestle's crunch bar) ran this, and a couple other ads in response to this, touting that sugar itself was natural and safe, in comparison to the artificial sweetener. Context helps kiddos.

Today, we know that sugar isn't good for us. But in the 1970s, people believed it could "cut appetite and increase your energy" and even help people lose weight. The truth is that foods rich in protein, fiber, and good fats are way healthier and make us feel satiated for far longer.

If someone told us to throw a used battery in a fireplace "to prevent soot formation," we'd probably call that person crazy. However, back then, batteries were made out of zinc and were not sealed. So the pressure wouldn't build up if they were to be thrown into a fire.

If we were to put a modern-day battery in a fireplace, it would most likely result in an explosion, toxic fumes everywhere, and chemical burns.

This is called propaganda. Some economists, politicians and activists in the 60's knew exactly what the endgame of capitalism would look like... Capitalists, at the time, called them Communists and blacklisted them from publishing or even speaking.. We saw this coming. Deep down we collectively knew the future would belong to the ultra wealthy. No one was willing to sacrifice the scraps we were allowed to have to ensure that our children would be able to sit at the table. And, We got exactly what we paid for.

Just looked this up (because it obviously says "Smith"). The artist was memorializing a leaked chat between Kanye West and Taylor Swift. The artist accidentally misspelled her last name (quite significantly in my book). It was later tagged with a variety of things including a tribute to Harambe (RIP).

I had a cunning plan. Go to the supermarket, buy real meat that came from a real animal, plus a big bag of chips (fries). Come home, cook them. Like three times as much food for about the same price as the burger flinger wants. Takes a little more effort, but paying ever more for cr*p is the price of convenience and I'm done with that.

On the other hand, in December, 2019, a certain much-hated-here psychologist discussed a CIA report for how a virus could be used to suspend democracy and make an entire society turn on itself with hatred and disgust. They key. he argued would be to make the society mask up so you could break their will and identify the government-compliant, and then train them to hate the people that refuse. If you do that, you can basically rewrite election laws w***y-nilly so you never have to worry about an election again.

Farm Sanctuary using a photo of Demi Lovato in their PR doesn't mean she can't make a turkey for Thanksgiving. Was she publiclyvegan/vegetarian at one point? I can't find anything that says she was. What I did find is that she is an activist for mental health care, BLM, gun reform and LGBTQ rights. She has been outspoken about her experiences with bi-polar disorder, adíctïón, bulimia, S.A as a child star, and coming out as gender neutral in the public eye. .So, maybe give her a break. And, most people I know who eat meat also love animals. Those things are not mutually exclusive.

I adore animals and still (occasionally, when I can afford it) eat meat. Do I feel conflicted about it? Sometimes, more about the methods of farming/housing/processing the animals than the actual eating. I have a friend who's completely vegan, avoiding all animal products, including honey, which I don't get, but I support. To each their own. I'd love to buy humanely farmed products, but there's no way I can afford such luxury. Until a viable and affordable option is available for us omnivores, this is just the way things will be.

Context time: The reason "Emachines" marketed this computer as never being obsolete, was down to two simple factors. First and foremost, they were some of the earliest computers to embrace the idea of "plug and play." So, any upgrades could easily slot into the computer. The second aspect, was they had a plan you could buy into (cost like 10 bucks a year), where you could send this computer into the company and get a substantial discount on a new one. Price varied, but in some cases you could get the new computer for 1/4th the asking price.

It just screams “nothing matters until I deem it to!” Like, I don’t need to have my own mental break down to understand others may be struggling.
