I agree, too many times people feel entitled due to their age. You don't owe anyone anything. Congrats on the souvenir and the story you will be able to tell your friends and family.

Sometimes, we're discouraged from expressing our unpopular opinions because of the adverse reactions we might get from the people around us. Whether we’re talking about politics, religion, or popular culture, sharing our deepest beliefs can make someone feel pretty irritated.

However, while some end up scratching their heads from confusion, others see a like-minded person and gladly show their support in heated discussions. After all, a controversial point of view does not instantly mean that it’s uncommon. When you push your fears of being the odd one to the side, it’s much likely you'll encounter others sharing the same thoughts as you.

Brandwatch, a digital consumer intelligence company, was on a mission to investigate the most popular unpopular opinions on social media. They looked at consumers’ mentions from January 1 to June 30, 2020, excluding news, retweets, and shares. Results showed that 1.6M people shared their controversial beliefs in this period. Also, there were 34% more mentions during the lockdown compared to the four months prior.

Greed and narcissism... it's sad, but it's human nature. The majority of the people out there are fake as heck, and will do things like posting videos of themselves crying on the internet as PR moves, to help promote and enhance their brands, to help them gain those clicks, likes, follows, and subscribes. Even more sad is that there ARE the odd few out there who honestly have no one and no where else to turn to, and are using the internet to reach out. But those odd genuine few are usually buried and overshadowed by all the loud popular influencers out there, with their TikToks and viral videos and their memes.

Harassment is the right word. What happened to Diana and other famous people with the paparazzi actually haunting them, spying and giving no Fu*ks. But here's a thought: Who the hell buys those rag mag's is an accomplice bc if they stop buying that filth then the paparazzi will (nearly) go away or at least be way less.

Speaking as someone who was out on their ass at 18... basic parenting, including food, clothing, and sleeping indoors.... isn't nothing. Not when you consider what it's like to do without any of those.

When it comes to the topics people touch on, the top ones were about characters in pop culture, TV shows, dislike of fandoms, and books. People shared their complaints about some of the bestsellers of the century and aired their grievances about how some shows have become outdated. For example, 34K mentions called out Friends "for being hugely popular, despite some aspects not being acceptable today."

The researchers also looked into Reddit, where 958K users shared their gripes. "It seems like lockdown got to Reddit users, too. Posts to r/UnpopularOpinions increased 105%." They found that many of these mentions touched on things that happened on the platform itself. Most of them were focused on sports players, subreddits, and seeing change as not being good.

So while it can be fun to share your controversial views online, they also let others say opposing views, have heated discussions, and see things from different perspectives. Anna Akbari, P.hD., is a sociologist, writer, and speaker who shared her thoughts on why unpopularity isn’t necessarily a bad thing in a piece on The Psychology Today

She explained that if we want to be happy, successful, and feel of service, we don’t actually need to appeal to the masses. "See, we’re complicated beings, each with our own unique experiences, full of biases and contradictions and, hopefully, a point of view," she wrote. "Having a point of view is a good thing, even when that view isn’t universally embraced."

100% - the cheater is the one at fault - unless the people they cheated with is also someone who you have a relationship with then it's equal blame as they both owe you loyalty. I've never understood the blame being passed to the person they cheat with, and it's usually women who blame the other woman when their guy cheats - I sure there's a patriarchal link to all that that could be deciphered but seriously, they're just a shitty person if they knew he was involved with someone - if they didn't then they're just as much a victim in it all. This idea that men can't help themselves if offered sex has to stop - you don't accidentally have sex - yeah, you may regret it after but you totally know what you're doing while you're doing it.

While we can wholeheartedly stand by one issue, we can also not see eye to eye on another. "Agreeing to disagree on most things in life is fine—assuming it doesn’t restrict the liberty or human rights of others. It’s when we start to think that we need to agree on everything all the time to merely function together that we get into trouble," Akbari mentioned.

Needless to say, popularity isn’t essentially bad. Lots of things that are commonly and generally accepted by our society are considered as "safe". Akbari explained that we don’t have to immediately or categorically reject the popular stuff but rather "selectively embrace it, or at least occasionally challenge it."

Yes, it really should be free. I have been in therapy on and off for years and it has been free (/paid by taxes). It's due to mental health issues so free healthcare = free mental healthcare. I learned a lot and cope much better. I wish it was available to all who needs it. To hear that people live with anxiety, ptsd, depression etc and can't afford therapy to learn how to cope better is really, REALLY sad.

However, if your views are not clinging to the mainstream popular or if they tend to stir some unexpected or even rude reactions, "don't despair. You don’t need to bend toward conformity, and you may even be able to cash in—financially and socially—on stepping outside the conventional bounds."

She mentioned two rules that people who tend to lean into unpopularity should remember. The first one is that you should actually believe what you’re saying or doing. "Disagreeing for the sport of it is annoying and, rightfully, no one likes or respects you if you do that. So stop it," the sociologist advised.

College is pointless for most jobs but emphasized because employers can exploit the college loan debt scam. Unless you're going into medical or law, a college degree can be easily replaced with internet access and on-the-job training. . A person with 2 years experience actually working in the field is vastly more qualified than someone who sat in a classroom for 4+ years listening to someone who's never done the work talk about how other people who have never done the work think the work should be done.

Execpt you can now get 4 year degrees from cheaper colleges, I pay like 4k a year tution at my local school that is accredited, but ASU wants like 20k a year you have to be a freaking moron to go to ASU instead, not only that ASU takes credits from my school, as long as its C or above so you can take 2 years there, for 8k and save your self 32 thousand in debt... But most parents see going to community college first as taboo lol

I have never understood the Americans obsession with college. You can not have an entire society with college degrees. You end up with people out of jobs (because there aren’t enough jobs to go around) and then a bunch of people who feel that because they have a college degree they are too good to do anything less than their perceived income and job status. It just can’t work. Give kids a chance to make that decision themselves, stop making college arrangements for them when they are 2 years old.

When I was in school as a teenager in 90's Britain I was told over and over and over that going to college and then university was a must if you wanted to be successful. So that's what I did, even though it didn't really sit right with me. I was told learning a trade was tantamount to being a failure in life. At the end of the day I wasn't sure what I wanted to do and these were adults advising me so I just simply believed them. Fast forward to today and everyone and their dog has a degree of some sort to the point it's been watered down so much it's effectively worthless. Yet friends of mine who opted for a trade are coining it and they also have useful skills that are always in demand. Therefore when my kids get to that age and if they decide they want to learn a trade I'll be 100% behind them and give them the support I never had.

How can I give you all the upvotes? This is something I firmly believe in. While STEM skills are useful and needed they are not the only thing. Critical thinking, reading for meaning, practical hands on skills are all needed too. And the military can be a good way to get training, a friend of mine went into the military to learn to be a pilot since he could not afford the usual commercial training route. He will have 10 years experience with planes and learn how to maintain them when he is done which will be way more valuable than just learning to fly commercial.

Stem applies to trades, besides the menial ones like painting. Electricians, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, welding, etc all use science, engineering and math. More often than not there is also fair amounts of technology involved with them as well. Just because the school is having a STEM day doesn't mean advancing the college narrative because many trade employers are willing to pay for the little but of schooling still involved(depending on licensing requirements required by the AHJ) and on the job training means you are learning what you need to know compared to being required to take that history of English studies class that you will never use being an accountant.

As an academic advisor for several years it would be great if there was a course that was centered on helping high schoolers figure out things they would be interested in doing. They would not only identify possible fields but review education/certifications needed, trends in that field, salary expectations, etc.

Oh using machines designed and made by more graduates, and working for people who got MBAs, and minors in the field.. I mean with out those people your just fixing AC units, and snaking drains. I went to college with a guy whos brother builds housing he was going to get a degree so he could design houses for his brother and make fat fat stacks he already had designs he used, but him having a degree, and knowing all the structure stuff officially greatly helped the family business. And with him and his brother the brother had MBA mind you, most the trade workers around her would have f**k all to do but fight over the same clients for basic repair jobs lol

Considering the state of public schools today, getting students to come to claß, teaching basics like reading, writing, and basic math is hard enough. Compounded by the political arena of parents who all of a sudden have opinions on what a teacher can not teach or politicians that have no idea how a curriculum works makes it frustrating. When a school needs money, everyone votes it down; then they complain because they expect teachers and schools to function with no money, materials, and equipment. Parents that work in an office, do you buy the paper and printer and other office supplies for your job? No? Then why do you expect teachers to do it?

for a Swiss it is extremely disturbing to see that military is considered an "option" - we here see it as a failure that kids are "forced" to join the military to get funding for college or due to lack of alternatives (if you don't want to end up at McDonalds and the likes). In Switzerland kids who are really good in school will be selected at the age of 12 and go to "high school" (our system works differently so I'm using this description loosely) while the others do a 3 yrs school education before selecting a job. you can still switch to "high school" if your marks improve and you feel this is the way to go. Even if you start learning a job at the age of 15 you can STILL decide to take on a universitary education which is called "Berufsschule", i.e. you can get a bachelor or master in your area of expertise, or switch to something completely different. University here is inexpensive (CHF 2000 per year), and if you really do need a loan to pay for it you will be given one at a very low interest rate.

I teach at a very good technical trade school. We have to stop companies from poaching our students before they graduate and they invariably leave with a solid contract and salary as they leave at 20-22 years old. We cannot fill all the engineers vacancies if we tried and it is one heck of a good selling point to high school pupils.

Definitely agree. I went to college after school because I felt it was expected of me. It's all any of the teachers talked about in the last couple of years. But surprise surprise, I hated it, I was miserable, and left after 8 months. I was even told by people that I wouldn't earn a decent wage without a college degree. Yet here I am, fully employed in a job I love, making decent money with no college degree and I couldn't be happier. Too much pressure is put on kids to go to college

My kids' high school had a career tech program. During your junior and senior years, you could learn construction, wood working, mechanical, cosmetology, forensic science, culinary arts and some other fields. By graduation, you would have 1st-level certification and if you required more education, you could get financial aid. Our community college would give a free ride to any and all high school students who hit a certain GPA in school, and no, you didn't have to be honor roll (I think it was C+-B-). There were a lot of kids in school who simply were not willing or able to get 4-6 year white collar degrees, and a lot of them really needed to work once they graduated high school. I disagreed a lot with the town and the school board, but on this, I was behind them 1000%.

I think 18-19 should be continued school but it’s a year of working in various sectors like 3 months in each to see how the real world works. Then 20 is when the student is ready to go to either college to study the career they feel they’re most suited for or direct into the workforce. By being around kids on a school bus as a driver , it gives people an understanding of how teaching works with kids not listening or working in a hospital where preemie / crack babies are so teens who think they want to f**k without condoms see the realities of what a crying needy infant is truly like. Bring kids to a real car crash so they see the realism of it not those stupid assemblies. See the blood spilled, glass shattered etc.. speeding , texting and drinking whilst driving would decrease significantly.

Whatever happened to apprenticeship? It's a way to help one learn while the other passes on his/her expertise and gets a helper. When I go 54 years and counting of my work goes with me.

I never went to college, or even a trade school and worked my way up to 6 figures. I know a lot of people who did the same. They’re the plumbers, welders, machinists, electricians, pipefitters of the world.

Yeah, I was 22 years old when I found out what a trade school was. Wish I would've done that or gotten an internship instead of going to college. I went because my parents never got to and never stopped to think of what I wanted. Lots of anxiety/depression developed and I even secluded myself from my friends because I didn't know how to deal with my issues. I have my BA now but my career has nothing to do with my degree

I think trade schools should be pushed as hard as college. The vast majority of trade school graduates have little to *no* debt and can get a good paying job *before* they graduate. I've heard the average age of a skilled tradesperson is 57 and there are few around that can take their place once they retire. It's those who are pushing college who are complaining that a trades person is charging major $$ to fix something. Well, it's a sellers market. Relatively few people are offering the service that's needed. College these days don't give students bankable skills, just a very expensive piece of paper and mountains of debt.

Well, I for one am happy to have had the opportunity to go to university in France. No clear plan at first, but no debt in the end at least. And now I do a job I would never have been able to do without a PhD degree. Maybe it's the whole college thing that needs to change, not the idea of learning for the sake of learning in higher education.

Different here, since studies up to a Masters degree are free and there are subsidies, so student loan is quite bearable. The point is that getting that degree is mostly about not slamming doors shut in front of you.

When I went went to college and got my AA degree in 2002, I was in class with several students from the Running Start where they could get their degree at the same time as their high school diploma. I have nothing against trade skills, having earned my living that way for a few decades. However, education is not just about "getting a job" - as emphasized by the ease with which charlatan's like Trump have grained traction. An uneducated population is the easiest to overthrow, which is why despots always attack academia first (but you wouldn't know that unless you were education.) The solution is not to try and drive students away from college and university, the solution is to make higher education more affordable and attainable, so even people who wish to be woodworkers, electricians, and truck drivers (like I was) can still have the societal benefits higher education. P.s. The statistics show that (at least for now, and even in the US) college educated still make better incomes overall (including when debt is factored in.) One of the mistakes here is the fact that the difference in income between Harvard and Happy State College is NOT large.

We were told that all the way through high school- there are other 'pathways'. Now my Australian state has made of those pathways more difficult by taking it out of schools. The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning was a non-acedemic, trade school type option which you now have to drop out of school and go to TAFE to do. Apparently they are giving more options within the high school certificate to help with student that would have done VCAL but I don't see how it will work. Anyway, rant over. There are plenty of ways to achieve the life you want and they don't all lead to university.

Is this no longer offered by schools? My highschool had the typical high school courses, but also had a college track (with lots of AP and college prep courses) a vocational track, where students would spend half the day learning some trade like carpentry, heavy equipment operation, etc), and a farming track which was similar to the vocational track, but it focused on farming skills. Kids were free to choose either one, but it was a multi-year decision, switching was hard.

I mean GI bill paid for almost all my cousins Dentist doctorate lol I think he owed like 12 grand when it was done forgot the amount but he worked weekends at local prison doing dentist work for them and paid off his debt in a year, then got a loan for his own office... Yes. College was never intended for the majority and is not needed for almost all jobs. Only very specific and specialized careers. Even many of these subjects have been "overcomplicated". To our detriment we combined the classical liberal education designed for the most intelligent ~5% - 10% of the population with something more like a technical school education for different subjects. Along the way we lost the benefits of each option and retained the weaknesses of each. Then business decided a degree was the lazy and easy way to weed out candidates. In response, an industry and financial system grew to feed an endless supply of easy money into institutions due to everyone "needing" a piece of paper as a prerequisite to employment. Using fear to.motivate more debt for the hope of financial success. But this debt s making the promise unattainable. Easy.money and lack of systematic checks and balances remove accountability and cause price inflation. Compounding the issue.

Not in the US. In the US, we have high school (which is similar to UK college). Once we graduate high school we can go to college/university or trade schools or enter the workforce. We tend to consider college and university to be synonyms. Although, there are 2 year colleges, but not 2 year universities.

Not much money in that, considering the level of responsibility required. He had enough. Went to community College for a 6 week course in a field that will always need people. He loves it. His company loves him. They want to move him up into management. Makes way more money doing this. Has started his own small business in another service people will always need. I see him going far. In more civilized countries, University (or College) is free, but it requires entrance tests and other considerations. Even in those more enlightened countries, people choose trade schools if they can't cut it for other specializations. This argument in the USA is usually viewed from the point of view of costs and debt, not aptitude. Citizens should be educated at taxpayer cost, which doesn't mean every idiot can get a PhD in any time wasting field. These slots are allocated based on performance and aptitude, including trade schools. We are having these discussions because instead our education system is profit based. No one cares if someone is drowning in debt to get a useless degree they will never use, because a bunch of people made money in the process. Free higher education is not a free-for-all. It's still a strict process and far less expensive than having your educated citizens perpetuating profit at all cost because they will finish paying for their degree in their 50s.

Once again, Americans have been convinced by their ruling class that someone getting something for nothing is the worst possible thing that can happen. It isn't so, because everyone at some point will get "something for nothing" even if it's just their funeral. But as long as this diabolical system and mentality are propagated, talented people cannot afford proper education, the rich but untalented will anyway and we all suffer paying more for less.

Held various progressive positions in the medical field (patient service representative, medical assistant, etc) then decided to go back to university at age 32 with a 4 year old daughter, to be a nurse. In Switzerland only about 40-50% of students go to high school (which is academically challenging) and then to uni/college. The others finish their 9 years of obilgatory education and start their 3-4 year apprenticeships, where they have a mix of work and school. At the end they are highly skilled workers. This is a perfectly viable option and you have many opportunities for further education to increas your position and your salary.

Earlier I said (as a former teacher) that one of the reasons to go to school is to learn what you want to learn. If you learn that you would rather pick up a wrench or a hammer than a pencil, then that's what you should do with your life, and you won't learn that at the local university. I also said that you go to school to learn how you learn. And not everyone learns in a way that college makes sense.

Retired teacher here, so let me weigh in on the realities. For elementary school kids, I'd overwhelmingly vote yes. Younger kids want to please the teacher; they want to be around the teacher, around other kids, in class. HOWEVER, as someone who taught middle and high school for 26 years, this does not work at all. By that time, there are a lot of kids who are looking for any way to leave the classroom. Yes, there are times they need to use the bathroom, but quite often they also want to socialize. There have been groups in certain years (not all by any means) that texted and met up in bathrooms and fought, too. It helps if a teacher has a sign in/out pass, or gives a certain number of tickets per month. Other children who don't have to use the bathroom COULD give a classmate a ticket if they felt generous.

"The second rule is to embrace your unpopular opinions with the knowledge and grace that not everyone shares your point of view," she continued. This rule can be quite tough since we humans have a general tendency to want others to agree with us. After all, it makes us feel heard and valued.

However, following this guideline "starts with a promise to both give up convincing other people to buy into your less popular opinions and to stop shaming them for their own thoughts and actions."

Seven years later and... my place is still unoccupied. And not just mine - two other people also quit from that office, and replacements could never be found. Or someone would start and then quit a month later due to the conditions. I guess the line of people for my spot turned out to be a bit too short ;)

We have to get rid of the phrase "unskilled labour". A janitor needs practical skills far above average (at least a good one does), and the working conditions of courier drivers or fastfood workers require a great deal of stamina and resilience. In any job you can go from beginner to master, working your job better or faster. Even more important, the economy absolutely depends on the jobs we tend to call "unskilled". Usually, in any company, if a middle manager is absent for some days, work continues more or less as usual. If the cleaning lady is absent, you notice the problems after a day or two the latest.

After that, it’s all about trusting yourself. If you believe that some things are just not right, don’t be shy and share your views with others because, chances are, there are people out there just like you. According to Akbari, there is value in dissent. "There’s often truth at the fringes and insight in unpopular perspectives. Greatness comes neither from blindly following nor from knee-jerk rejecting."

"Many of our greatest historical figures held really, really unpopular opinions. They did stuff that made people cringe or even retaliate against them. Going against the grain takes guts. And that courage is admirable, even if we disagree with what they’re saying or doing—but only when executed with integrity from a place of personal honesty," she wrote.

We switched my kid to a Montessori school because they got to 6th grade and there was no AP option so they were just sitting there bored. It costs a good bit, but I have no reason to think public schools will be better for my kid than they were for me.

I'll probably be downvoted, but this also applies to the African American label. Your distant ancestors were from Africa, you were born in the US therefore you are American. You don't hear people of Asian or African ancestrysaying they are Chinese English or Ghanian Scottish, they are English or Scottish or just plain British.

Jeans and hoodies get washed maybe once a month (or three) unless something has got on them. You don't need to smell like washing powder, and constantly washing everything is bad for you, your clothes, your bank account, and the planet. End of discussion, downvote me all you like I think you know by now I don't give a s**t.

My husband and I have slept in separate rooms for over 10 years (due to his loud snoring keeping me awake). We are very happy together and have no real problems in our relationship - we just both like a decent night sleep. People assume that we aren’t intimate and/or that our whole relationship is falling apart, which couldn’t be further from the truth.

I feel like the human approach to "what to do with the waste/recycling of electric vehicles" will (and probably is) treated similar to the problem of what to do with nuclear waste, and unfortunately, our approach seems to be to sweep it under the rug and let future generations figure it out.

I went to France twice. One time through the Christmas and New Year's holidays and then again in Summer for rock climbing and rappelling. Both times I and the people I was with were all treated like crap by every French national we crossed paths with even though we were always discrete and polite. Had the same experience later in Quebec. It's left a lasting distaste with me for French Culture.

Where do you stop though? Football, rugby and cricket pitches are dotted across my city. Should all organised sport be outlawed? Bottom line is people are paying to use that greenspace so it maintains itself. Parkland needs maintaining and with no income stream, that can end up costing the local authority quite a bit. That said, there is a place for parks and everybody should have access to greenspace, it's just how do we do it and keep everybody happy whilst balancing the books?

I think if it's done correctly you don't notice that it's there - it's the crappy and overdone ones we notice and then judge everyone by that standard. My ex Co-worker used to get it done every 6months or so and you really wouldn't know if she hadn't told you, it was done in a way that stopped her forehead wrinkling up, crows feet etc but still had plenty of movement and expression - if I ever want it done I'll be going where she did. She looked awesome and at most looked like early 30's when she was twenty years older. Making it readily available via people who have short term courses to qualify is what makes it look horrific

It's partly the fault of Hollywood, and the media in general. Most of us are convinced that once we found "the one" they will complete us, compliment us and fill in all the gaps and cracks in our lives, in our hearts. Not sure that is healthy to be honest - it hypes them up to an unrealistic degree in our minds, and makes relationships more "magical" and unobtainable than they might actually be.

Former teacher here. There are three reasons you go to school (at least in the US): 1) To learn a base set of knowledge so you don't look stupid in conversations ("I thought Africa was a country!") 2) To learn HOW to learn. Your style of learning is unique to you, and you need to learn what that is. It's probably not going to be spot on with what the education system has to offer, but you'll be learning how to handle things in that type of environment. 3) To learn what you want to learn. My son is getting a PhD in Spanish Language Arts right now. If he hadn't been forced to take a language in middle school he would never have known that he like languages and had an affinity for them. It's not about learning the right structure for an essay, it's about learning how to organize your thoughts so when you go to write that grant proposal, you do it so well you get the grant!

you can't expect teachers to create brand new quizzes for every class. There is such a thing as validity of the quizzes and that can't be calculated if you use new ones all the time. If you're trying to be fair, then you need to know that the same score on a test will actually mean the same thing.

In my experience, the best years of my life started at 30. That's when I got a nice new job, moved into my own home, found many new friends, etc. My childhood years were mostly bleak...

Tipping as a requirement is stupid and shitty management if they aren't paying properly, if tipping is mandatory then just change your menu prices...oh wait, that costs you a tiny bit more in tax. Delivery drivers being tipped? That's stupid, again just charge (more) for delivery. I get good service, I tip, but wages are the responsibility of the management, not the customer.

Huh? I don't think you're spoiled. Why do you need to be punished because your mother can't get you to school on time?

My mom used to go through all of my stuff about every 6 months, always when it was at school or camping or what not. She would throw away almost everything. I learned not to bother trying to have anything and if a friend wanted to give me a gift I'd ask if I could keep it at their house, otherwise I wouldn't have it long. It's probably because of this I'm not materialistic at all and the total opposite of a hoarder. My place is very spartan. No my mother isn't spartan. She's not a hoarder but has a house full of stuff and many storage units full of stuff.

Not sure not showering is "shameful and might be harmful", I think that's the whole point they were trying to get across. There's a difference between never showing and assaulting peoples' noses, and not showering daily while still smelling fine.

As adults, our trick or treating is going to the store Nov. 1 and seeing all the big ass bags of candy %50 off 😋

There's also emotional work. I'm a homeless shelter manager. It's not physical labor - there's no heavy lifting or anything - but a lot of new hires don't last because the job can be really hard emotionally.

I work in retail & people are losing jobs because of all the self-service machines. Sometimes the people that want serving at a counter just want someone to interact with. I think there should be both options personally

That is exactly what "secret" means. If you can't be arsed to actually keep quiet, you need to be honest and say you can't be trusted with actual secrets.

Totally agree with the first part of your post, completely disagree with the second. Trophy hunting does not play the slightest part in sustaining the lion or rhino population, and both are not that big in numbers that the populations would have to be controlled or decimated (, which is the usual reason for hunting in most western countries).

There is no way this would be very helpful, how would they get the ages? The only way I can think of is if the kids enter it, and most kids would lie. And the ones that don't lie would be a target for pedos. The idea is just flawed.

I don't think guys get as much flak for not having kids as women do. Hence him thinking it's ridiculous. Once you hit 30 and you haven't had a fertile egg, it's open season from the mommies.

Caring about how other people drink water is childish. She might have a taste sensitivity. I wonder if there were other issues here. Sounds like Op doesn't like this person for how they act, too.
