Train once sang that there are a thousand ways to die. But we think that might be a gross underestimate. Besides the obvious causes of death like accidents, illnesses, diseases, crime and old age, there are a load of lesser-known life risks lurking around us on earth. Sometimes, people encounter them without even realizing it. They make it out alive, and only afterwards, get to truly grasp the grave danger they were in. A few of these folks even take photos of what could have been their last moments.

Bored Panda has put together a list of truly terrifying times people had an unknowing brush with death. From naive tourists taking selfies in a Chernobyl claw surrounded by deadly levels of radiation, to people casually holding creepy crawlies that could send them 6 feet under in a matter of minutes… Some of these photographs might have you treading a lot more carefully the next time you walk out the door.

If there is a single row of scales leading to the ãnal plate (underbelly of snake at point where body meets tail) then it is venomous. If there is a double row then it is non venomous. The head shape is not a perfect system and neither is the presence of heat pits. The only perfect system is the plate scales...that said. Please don't pick up ANY snake. If you think a non venomous snake can't hurt you then fück around and find out. Get bitten by a Boa and see how much damage a non venomous snake can do.EDIT: Because BP censored ãnal.

From Wikipedia: "The blue-ringed octopus, despite its small size, carries enough venom to k**l 26 adult humans within minutes. Their bites are tiny and often painless, with many victims not realizing they have been envenomated until respiratory depression and paralysis begins. No blue-ringed octopus antivenom is available."

The earth is filled with beautiful creatures, big and small, and it can be tempting to pick something up to take a closer look. But for the sake of your life, it's always best to err on the side of caution. Ask a guy known as 'Frank.' He was snorkeling in Egypt's Red Sea when he came across a colorful shell that he considered taking home as a souvenir.

"I thought I just found a very pretty seashell and was thinking about taking it home as a souvenir, but I noticed it's still alive, feeling some weight and movement inside, so I decided to at least take some pictures of it," he wrote on Reddit.

Little did Frank know that his "souvenir" contained a toxin that can paralyze or even end a human life within a few short hours. The cone snail can take down its (smaller) prey in a matter of seconds.

It may be uranite. It is quite common here. Funny thing, it was called "smolinec" which means "bad luck stone", but not because it would be radioactive or cause people to die, but because it was often found in silver mines, and it meant that the silver vein ended.

Someone in my neighborhood put out poison of some kind and I spent my Saturday morning picking up 13 rat corpses from the yard, the sidewalk and the neighbor's yard. (I didn't want any coyotes or other wild scavengers to also get poisoned.) I had never set eyes on a single rat in the neighborhood before that day, which I guess tells you how ubiquitous they really are. Also, that day left me with a bit of mild PTSD.

You kind of can wander around like this in Pripyat:Chernobyl. When I went, it was me, my bf and one tour guide. She let us do things that the group tours weren’t allowed to do, like climb a 16 storey apartment building to stand on the roof so we could see the reactor 2km away, the same way locals did when it exploded in 1986. It was very humbling. The only protective equipment we had were raincoats and rain boots that we brought ourselves. We didn’t do anything disrespectful like this though, and our guide was careful to keep us from touching anything highly radioactive (like the fire fighter’s equipment in the hospital.) We could have if we were stupid enough, though.

The cone snail isn't the only deadly creature lurking in the ocean. You might remember daredevil conservationist Steve Irwin. The Australian made a living recording his dangerous encounters with animals in the wild. He was known for his fearless escapades with crocodiles, snakes and other scary creatures that many of us wouldn't approach with a ten-foot pole.

But in the end, it was a stingray that ended Irwin's life. The stingray's barb pierced his chest more than once, before swimming away and leaving him for dead. The "Crocodile Hunter," as he was fondly known, had been filming a documentary at the time of the shocking tragedy.

How Lucky I Am To Be Still Alive? Red Sea, Egypt

Hands holding a potentially dangerous sea snail underwater in a reef setting.

This is a textile cone snail, Conus textile. All cone snails are venomous and this species is one of those known to be dangerous to humans. Deaths are rare, about 30 are known to have occurred among all cone snail species, but likely underreported. So yeah, it was a bad idea to just pick it up, especially underwater where it was very likely alive.

Stingrays and cone snails are among dozens of venomous sea creatures. The act of injecting venom or toxins into a human or animal via a bite, puncture or sting is called envenomation. According to the Divers Alert Network (DAN), envenomation is "always due to direct contact with an animal (or parts of it like drifting jellyfish tentacles)." While envenomations are rare, they can be life-threatening.

"There are two possible mechanisms of injection: active, such as jellyfish or cone snails, or passive like lionfish or sea urchins," notes the DAN site. "Injuries typically occur during shore entries or exits, incidental contact or deliberate attempts to handle a specimen."

The balancing of the equation is wrong though. I think they wanted to write 2FeS₂ + 11/2 O₂ → Fe₂O₃ + 4SO₂ but missed the "/" and that doesn't really make sense anyway. The correct one should be 4FeS₂ + 11O₂ → 2Fe₂O₃ + 8SO₂

    Jrog
    Community Member
7 months ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Also, it's not "explosive": it's exothermic, but not nearly enough in those quantities to start a fire or "explode". Those are a few grams of pyrite, and it would take about 100 grams reacting at the same time to heat 1 liter of water to the boiling point. The energy content there is comparable to a small chocolate snack. It would be enough to melt the wax in the candle, but without igniting or boiling it. The biggest danger is the SO₂ (sulphur dioxide) that is lightly toxic and dangerous in far larger quantities than shown here.

The words 'venom' and 'poison' are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference. Both mean a toxic chemical produced naturally by an animal. But the way they are delivered is not the same.

Venom is introduced via a wound. Think of stingrays, cone snails or snakes, or any animal that uses its teeth, sting, spines or claws to inject its prey or protect itself. "Poison is different as there is no wound involved. It can be absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin, inhaled or ingested," explains Dr Ronald Jenner, a venom evolution expert at the Natural History Museum.

Was Cleaning Webs Off My Porch…

Dangerous black widow spider with a red hourglass marking inside a clear container.

And this lady just dropped herself down from my light fixture right next to my flip flopped foot. This is the BIGGEST black widow I’ve ever seen in person.

I found a live female black widow spider in some grapes I bought from Walmart. She could have bit me at anytime when I took the grapes out of the bag and into the colander to wash them. I ended up giving her to a spider enthusiast and she kept her for almost 2 years. We couldn’t release her because she wasn’t from where I live and I refused to k**l her. She wasn’t actually quite sweet.

Most black widow species aren’t that aggressive! I used to catch them on the playground in elementary school. Brown widows, however, have become invasive where I live, are pushing out the native black widow species, and they ARE aggressive and will bite with very little provocation.

Most spider bites happen when you don't see the spider. If you brush against it because you didn't know it was there, or worse, put on clothes they crawled into, then from their point of view it's self defense.

This doesn't seem to fit the thread title. Poster DOES appear to know it is a dangerous spider. We used to get them sometimes when we lived in California. I've only seen one once in all the years I've lived in Washington due to (I assume) the colder climate. And that one might have come with us from California.

They’re all over where I live. Not aggressive and rarely sting. You pretty much would have to turn them over and put your hand directly on them to get them to sting.

Killed one next to my washing machine the other day. A while ago one got its leg stuck in the zipper on my makeup bag. I was half asleep and took me a while to notice it. Smashed it against the wall with my slipper and got ready for work. Found one in my kitchen rubber gloves. Smashed it and thankfully didn't just blindly put on my gloves. It was a clear and semi-venomous spider. If you live in areas like the SW US where they are common, always check your shoes, gloves and hats prior to use.

Over 20 years back, a house we rented was inundated with them. We killed over 30+ that year. Fun fact I didn't know was that they sometimes dig holes and live in those. Wind scorpions were also rampant.

Am I looking at that right? It's the main breaker he has wedged? Ideally the main is not needed unless shutting off the panel to do maintenance on the downstream breakers. But it is typically 100-200 amps. Jamming it open is a bad idea. LOL

Okay. It does appear to have solid strand aluminum wiring on 110 service. Aluminum is not as conductive as copper and thusly expands and contract when current passes. It is no longer used in residential applications in the US. On a side note, the entry feed at top has appeared to have melted the connection with bus. The wood is holding it secure (so to speak) with the box. Collision course with fire.

Fortunately, not all venoms and poisons are fatal to humans. Sometimes the substances are just used as a deterrent. Think hellishly painful but you'll live to tell the tale.

According to the Natural History Museum, the bullet ant has one of the most painful stings of all insects. "The pain can last up to 24 hours, but a human victim is likely to walk away otherwise unharmed," reads the site.

Bees and wasps are another example. While they both sting and inject venom, the insects aren't deadly to humans. Unless you're highly allergic and go into anaphylactic shock.

Ok well this one is completely fine, it's an exploding cannon ball, they were filled with black powder had a fuse of slow match and were lit before being fired, if this one didn't blow it was a dud, these types of cannon balls haven't been used since the 18th century, any black powder in it has decomposed and is completely inert. Totally fine to pick up. People acting like this is some WW2 UXO which you should not mess with, they used TNT and had pressure sensitive fuses, you could set one of those off still.

I think I remember that one - from the last couple of years. I tried to find the news article, but failed. I think, Novelette, that the home in question had a Victorian naval shell in the back garden - nicely painted for a back garden prop and everything. Turned out it was filled with explosives (no propellant) and the bomb squad took it away, but without any special precautions. "Not safe, but not likely to blow up without severe provocation" seemed to be the diagnosis.

I Almost Fell Into A Sinkhole Under My Porch. I Caught Myself On The Edge Of The Hole, From My Chest Down Was Just Dangling Beneath Me. Below The Opening The Hole Is About 10’ Wide And 15’ Deep

Dangerous images of a snowy hole revealing roots underground.

The hole extends to about the middle of my grill. These are not great pictures but it’s dark. I think that’s the foundation.

You should have authorities come and do a ground evaluation. Sinkholes are indications that the ground is unstable so they can multiply in number or in size. Some are big enough to swallow homes. Don't wait. If it shows instability in the ground below your home, get out immediately.

Identify first, pick later - if possible. No need to rip out mushrooms only to realise you need to throw them away. And if you aren't sure what they are, just leave them anyway.

We have had two cases of mushroom poisoning in Australia widely reported in the media, in the last few years. One a (allegedly) purposeful poisoning by a family member and the other someone at a wellness/meditation retreat who drank a 'tonic' which had poisonous ones in it. There were lots of notes on foraging websites after, pleading people not to eat anything unless you are certain which species it is.

The destroying angel mushroom is truly terrifying. It more or less destroys your DNA, putting whoever ate it in a "walking ghost" phase, where the person feels fine after the initial cholera-like symptoms, but they're dying fast.

What a beautiful name for this deadly mushroom. I only knew it by its Swedish name Vit flugsvamp, "white fly mushroom". In Sweden we say: never pick any mushrooms that are white. It is a simple safety rule that's easy to follow.

When I was in high school we ran em until they popped - known as may pops once the fabric showed all the way around. Then in college ran em until they became hummers - that's when enough wire is sticking out that the tires hum. Luckily now I can afford to replace them once the tread is almost gone.

Just wow. I am not that surprised considering I lived in an apartment where they decided to just side over the dryer vent and just slap the vent exhaust cover over the topt of the siding without cutting a hole. The prior tenants who lived there for 2 years never wondered why their clothes never dried. The entire thing was packed with lint and could have caused a fire at any time. Half-assery runs amok.

Here, yes. However, statics are a crazy thing, and they are often done to enhance strength and save material costs. Weirdly enough a steel beam with holes in it can carry more weight than the same without holes. Calculations and practice prooves this.

This problem famously happened to a car in the 80s, the "Chrysler TC By Maserati." It had a fancy crystal-looking convex window in the back pillar with the car's logo etched into it. Convex glass is also known as a lens, so owners would park out outside and come back to find a line burned into the interior tracing the sun's movement in the sky.

Uncapped wells are no joke. You run into them up north in MN. You're supposed to pour concrete but sometimes it's just a sheet of plywood. Keep an eye out or you're going down. They're more common than you think.

This isn't that dangerous to own. Obviously I wouldn't drink out of it. Radium emits mostly alpha radiation which is pretty weak and won't penetrate your jeans or cardboard. For comparison, radium is what was used for years to make watches / gauge dials glow in the dark. Airplane cockpits used to be full of it due to all the instruments. It did cause eye damage to commercial pilots staring at it all day, but the small amount of radium on my old diver's watch isn't going to hurt me. INGESTING it though is bad. "CPM" (counts per minute), measures frequency of radiation, not its strength.

As someone who lacks any talent, I'm at least allowed to do one thing unattended / unsupervised - performing hemodialysis treatments with all the trimmings.....destructs during the production of the blood tubes happen from time to time, but there is not a very close examination of every tube before it's getting used, it's rather like it's gonna be found out in vivo, and I haven't yet experienced any large-scale product recalls...what surprises me is that the venous particle filter is normally where the patient's blood begins to clot, but here it is missing though, and from a purely mechanical point of view, it is rather unlikely that a patient will have large ammounts of clotted blood getting re-infused, 'cause usually at the very second upper venous pressure alert the couriosity of the staff should get triggered anyway......🙋🏽 🤷🏽 🤔

Kids die at beaches all over the world from holes like this. At most places in the US it's against the rules/law to dig so deep. Looks like beach patrol is about to make them fill it back in.

Tourist season has started here. We know that 2 to 4 people will not return home due to this stupidity, and additional deaths and injuries caused for native animals, people, dogs and horses, even after the hole is filled up. The sand is loose, a sudden soft spot causes broken legs. The "best" idea one family had: Digging a 1m deep canal from the dunes to the water. No emergency vehicle could pass.

Many years ago there was a horrible incident in Ocean City, MD, where a woman fell in a hole someone dug and died as she tried to climb out. The sides collapsed in on her. They passed a law that no one could dig a hole deeper than the knees of the shortest person in their party. This is so dangerous. I still have the occasional nightmare about being trapped and having the wet sand covering me and getting in my nose and mouth....

Speaking from experience the last sound you hear is a sort of CRUMP followed by absolute black and absolute silence. Then the realisation you cannot move...followed by terror. Fortunately my thighs and knees were outside of the hole and I just managed to extract myself, but it was as close as I ever want to get.

Fly agaric. They are hallucinogenic, and eaten with zero tripping effects as boiling breaks down the psychoactive compunds, but yeah, certainly poisonous without double boiling. People eating them to float through the solar system have poisoned themselves.

Amanita Muscaria is rarely deadly. They are always hallucinogenic. There are people who eat them but it takes hours of boiling and throwing the water out. Not worth it when there are so many yummy safe edible ones.

I've tried them - after drying them in the oven. They're "interesting" in that unlike normal psychedelic shrooms, they don't expand the mind - if anything, they lowered my IQ for the duration of the trip which felt like sedation, unpleasant sweating and looped thoughts. Glad when it wore off. There are far more pleasant ways to get high.

During my years as a firefighter, we found a similar bottle of picric acid in the attic of the chemistry department at a local college. With the inside of the stopper being covered with a crystalline precipitate, we dealt with it the easy way: had the State Patrol bomb squad take care of it.

$400 For A Night Airbnb Refuses To Turn Heat Above 58 Degrees

Gas stove with blue flames near oven and fan, illustrating a potentially dangerous kitchen setup.

Yes, this is actually dangerous! I'm surprised more people aren't pointing this out. You're 100% supposed to vent your range! Gas combustion byproducts (carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, etc.) can be deadly or harmful to health. This is NOT healthy. If it's generating carbon monoxide, that's potentially deadly! At a minimum, with perfect combustion, you're flooding the house with carbon dioxide. At modest levels, CO2 creates a "stuffy room" feeling, worsens concentration, performance, and sleep. Really high concentrations of CO2 can even be hazardous to health or deadly. If you're properly venting your range, you're sending most all gas combustion byproducts out, but you're bringing in cold makeup air. Hence, a gas range/oven does NOT work for heating. Someone may say they cook all the time without venting. That's not good, but what's over an order of magnitude worse is running all the burners overnight. I didn't used to vent properly while cooking, but after seeing air quality sensor readings from my own home, even when just boiling water, I've been a convert.

I have no idea about the legitimacy of this photo, but I can absolutely tell you that about 30 years ago my siblings and I took a photo with a tiger at a local festival. Two stretched over his back and me and my brother essentially "scruffing him". We were all super young, we didn't know better. But every time I look at that photo I'm reminded that my father chose to pay for the tiger photo because (and this is a haunting quote) "the other option was the grizzly bear and he looked irritated".

Really?? Looks like Queen Anne's Lace to me -- a very common wildflower. Or weed, as my farmer dad was fond of saying. Never was poisonous -- but I didn't try eating or drinking it, either.

Queen Anne’s lace has a red/black spot in the middle, and the clusters are much less spread out. The leaves are also a different shape and density.

Not dangerous, just painful. When I was a toddler I saw a little bush with green, yellow and red fruits. So pretty so I picked one and chewed it. Big mistake, it was a chili bush with the chilies at various degrees of ripeness. It's one of my earliest memories and I still vividly remember the pain and howling that ensued.

I worked with some machinery and the basic rule is "disconnect power that can k**l you BEFORE you touch it". It may be electricity, steam, compressed air,... doesn't matter, you turn it off and lock it and you have somebody watching that nobody is turning it on.

Agree. In the navy we used dual lockout so if either one (valve / breaker / etc) was accidentally turned on, component did not start. And in many situations there was a physical lock/device that held the breaker open.

At the recycling centre we had to clean inside machinery at the end of every shift, we had similar. There was 20 of us going in all under belts and bits, every one of us took a key out of the board on the way in. You physically cannot start the machine without every single key. 2nd week there someone handed their key to a friend while inside the machine, immediately fired.

Standard procedure in the military and I suspect most industrial situations is dual lock out. So for example, breaker/switch for this machine and an upstream breaker. Or when we were working on a pump that didn't have an available second breaker, the electrician physically disconnected the power wires to the pump. A part of me wonders if this was a joke photo because both the red and green buttons say PULL to start / Push to stop. But sadly, probably isn't.

That cigarette is not going to do anything that the flame from a grill cant do. Think about it for a second. The tank is not that far from an open flame while you're grilling and that's fine but a smoldering cigarette on the other side of a metal cage is going to cause some kind of explosion or fire? That does not make any sense logically. The no smoking is just a cover your a*s thing.

Finally Found Where My Lint Trap Is

Dryer lint trap dangerously overfilled, posing a fire hazard.

Lived in my apartment for 3 years and ignorantly thought I didn't have a lint trap in my dryer. Found out it's under the handle on the top of it, but since it was hard to pull up, I figured it was something else and I didn't want to break it and get management mad at me. Finally figured out that if I pull it towards me, it'll come out. Got lucky today. So glad I got some radioactively bright red towels that clogged the inside of my dryer and proved to me that I do indeed have a lint trap I need to manually clean.

No - genuinely some of the old vented driers didn’t, at least in the UK. They just vented all the fluff out of the flexi hose you lobbed out of the window when you were using it. Nowadays I suspect they all do - our heat pump based drier has two, one you empty every time and one that you do when the screen tells you (I think it’s off some sort of counter).

This Tiny Cute Bat I Found Last Night

Person holding a small bat on their finger, capturing a dangerous moment.

Just so everybody knows: you don’t need to be bitten by bats to get rabies or any other virus they have, being scratched is enough. Note that most of the time you don’t feel or see the scratch. Also, when symptoms start to declare, it is too late and you are 100% dying. Getting a preventive shot might be for nothing but it takes 1 hour of your life max instead of… just putting an end to it.

Rabies is actually quite rare in bats. There was a coincidental run of bats with rabies in the 80s because two women got bitten and died, and then nothing for ten years. Bats are very useful animals - they eat their weight in mosquitos every night - and quite gentle.

They can also carry up to 500 different pathogens, and while rabbies might not be as common as believed they should still be treated like zombies in the movies - any scratch or bite has to be treated

The inside plastic part that's broken is only there to provide insulation. There's always a hole in it, or in this case in th frame at bottom left, anyway, to equalise pressure. Absolutely nothing worry about there unless there's a sharp edge.

Doesn't look like soot, more that the hot exhaust gases have degraded/burnt the plastic siding material, which sounds to me much worse than if it were soot. It definitely should not be like that. ETA I don't know what's normal or allowable in the US, but that vent looks to me like it's intended for extractor fans such as you might have on your cooker hood. A gas fire should have a proper chimney that vents well clear of any wall or roof structure.

All else apart it would be very easy for mice or other rodents to get in there, and they just love to chew electrical wire insulation. What could possibly go wrong?

I don't know the circumstances around this but these look to be 3 phase bus bars and neutral bar which would normally be protected by a cover, and the cover is not removed until a new compartment is to be added on as an extension (this is why they would be deliberately left long)

My Sister Accidentally Left Some Salt Water In Her Ceramic Mug Overnight And Salt Crystals Seeped Through

Hand holding a yellow mug covered in sugar near a bathroom sink, creating a potentially dangerous mess.

here seems to be some misinformation about what's happening with the pottery here. When fired above 2300°F (∆8-∆10), the clay is no longer porous, and can safely be used for dishware. This was not fired at those temps, we can see that it's porous, and can hold onto moisture and bacteria. Some glazes contain toxic elements but that wouldn't be as easy to just visually identify.

This one is BS. For one thing, a mug-full of water will not evaporate overnight. For another, the mug is glazed inside and out, so regardless of how porous the clay body might be, the glaze is non-porous. That mug has been plunged into a concentrated salt solution, drained, and left to dry somewhere hot.

I had similar crystals on our pickle pot (or how is it called. It is a pot for making sauerkraut). I add salt in the water lock, because when I use just water, there was mold forming in it. The water evaporates (surprise), so you have to refill it from time to time, but salt made some weird crystals and few times those crystals reappeared after washing it and letting it dry (it needs few week to show).

    Wolf In La Jolla

Large wolf-like dogs walk with people on street and indoors, highlighting danger.

This man and woman were walking their pet wolf down Girard street on 2/15/24, the man uses a rope as a leash. This is the second time I’ve seen this wolf in La Jolla which is surprising because it’s illegal to keep wolves as pets in California.

I’m aware that it’s legal to own wolfdogs who are under 25% pure wolf in CA, however I’ve heard from someone who spoke to the owner briefly that this wolf is 100% wolf.

The third picture was taken by a friend who spotted the wolf in La Jolla around a year or two ago.

How are they allowed to do this? It’s completely dangerous to have a wolf walking around town, especially amongst children and other dogs. Even if she is behaved the majority of time, it just feels like an accident waiting to happen.

Source? Because that’s BS. Wolves are not domestic animals. When raised by humans they will view humans as part of their “family”, but they will still play and behave like wolves, which means if you do something that they consider “out of line”, they WILL bite, as that is what they would do to another packmate that crosses the line. So, while a wolf raised by humans might not go and eat the neighbor’s toddler, it is NOT a domesticated animal and will NOT behave like a domestic dog.

Weird, but not THAT bad considering there is no shower. I wouldn't set my house up like that but I also wouldn't have a problem taking a bath in that tub.

That's a Staticmaster 500, used for removing dust and static electricity from vinyl LP records. There's a fine soft brush attached to that sliding tab. Underneath the metal grid at the top is a strip coated with polonium, a radioactive (alpha-emitting) isotope with a short half-life. The alpha particles it emits will ionize the air for a few inches in front of the grid, and this allows any static electricity on the LP to drain away while the brush removes dust particles. The useful lifetime of the brush is only a couple of years... this one has a use-by date of 1970. By now the polonium has decayed through many half-lives and is probably inert... but it would still be a good idea to dispose of this as potentially hazardous material.

Very common all over Southeast Asia. Most people ride small displacement motorcycles, and gas stations are few and far between. Just about every little store in Cambodia or Vietnam will have gas decanted into liter bottles.

Lead paint was in walls that would not even get near your food, and yet you know how well that went. Also, you might be putting too much faith in the government (and parents as well). I wouldn't be surprised if the next wave of political conspiracy negationism started to lobby for the rehabilitation of lead.
