It’s understandable why we admire celebrities. Many use their fame to support important causes, raise awareness, and donate to charity. On the surface, they seem like real-life heroes.
But behind every wholesome image is a team of publicists working hard to keep scandals under wraps and good deeds in the spotlight. So, while some stars appear squeaky clean, the reality is often more complicated.
And strangely enough, nothing seems to clear a celebrity’s reputation quite like their passing. That’s the theme of this viral Reddit thread, where people are naming famous figures whose shady histories were conveniently forgotten once they were no longer around.
Check out the most surprising examples below.

John Lennon. Musical talent aside, the way he treated his ex wife and Julian is appalling. And people let him off far too lightly for the break up of the band, blaming it all on Yoko Ono. He was a grown a*s man who could think for himself.
Not that Yoko is any better. She couldn't be bothered to lift a finger or contribute a single cent towards Julian after John's passing. She inherited John's entire estate worth an estimated $800M at the time of his death. A million would've meant nothing to her, so she obviously was being needlessly petty and spiteful.
On the other hand, Paul looked out for both Julian and his mother. When Cynthia put John's old love letters up for auction because they needed money, Paul bought them and gifted them back to her. He's a class act who deserves his celebrity recognition.
People blame Yoko Ono for lots of things. But I've heard Paul McCartney explain that it was 100% John's idea to leave the Beatles.
The Beatles broke themselves up. And it was not just Lennon. Paul McCartney was an arrogant p***k, and thought HE WAS the Beatles.
Load More Replies...Don't particularly care for him for reasons but Paul McCartney is a real bro
Lennon also regularly beat his wife and son. Not a nice human being.
Never bought his peace and love shtick because of that and other glaring realities.
Load More Replies...I've had a crush on Paul McCartney since I was tall enough to reach the record player.
Also Yoko ghosted her daughter from her previous marriage. They only reunited many years later.
Ronald Reagan
He was a piece of s**t human being, but got away with a lot of it due to his personal celebrity appeal.
He obviously knew about Iran-Contra and lied about it, disparaged Nelson Mandela and supported South Africa's apartheid government, ignored the AIDS crisis, was instrumental in the current wealth inequality that we have today by bringing about "Trickle Down Economics", defunded mental health care and education, gave weapons to the Taliban, busted unions, threw out the Fairness Doctrine, and my personal favorite: sabotaged the Iran Hostage Negotiations behind the scenes so that he could use it against Carter in the 1980 election.
He shouldn't be on Mount Rushmore, he should be under it.

In this context, Ronnie is the personification of Original Sin.

How dare he! I mean, Madiba wasn't an angel, and never claimed to be. (How he treated Winnie after she'd spent so many years fighting the fight on his behalf was not nice.) But he truly did want the best for his people, of which I am one. My mother met him (they were both in the Park Lane in 1990) and she said he was always friendly.

Mother Teresa was a horrible person to those she supposedly cared for.
Words attributed to Mother Theresa: “There is something beautiful in seeing the poor accept their lot, to suffer it like Christ’s Passion. The world gains much from their suffering.” The problem is that she really, really believed in her own worldview and imposed it on those who were poor and sick. https://allthatsinteresting.com/mother-teresa-saint
Just reading that quote is cruel and sickening. This is one of the many reasons I've abandoned Christianity and all it's forms.
Load More Replies...She fought against birth control. She wanted more poor people born so she could be sainted for caring for so many poor people.
Best description I ever heard of her "A psychopathic Albanian dwarf". NB: This is a quote from many years ago. That's why there's a now offensive word in there.
There's more than one book about her that tells the unvarnished truth. "Hell's Angel" is one but I read another one years ago (can't remember the title now) written by an Indian person who said Indians from Kolkata really hated her because of how she treated people. The money she raised by being so high-profile didn't go to the poor - it went to the church and to open more convents, not havens for the poor.
There’s a podcast from the point of view of one of her nuns. The things they did were often dreadful, including “disciplining” themselves.
Load More Replies...There are a lot of grumblings that her convent specifically engaged in trafficking.
Not the saint people think she is. She said that the starving and ill had brought it upon themselves!
Steve Jobs. Everyone only remembers him as the guy who created and then saved Apple and “invented” the iPhone. People don’t remember how he f****d over his best friend, knocked up his girlfriend and left her as soon as he found out she was pregnant, refused to give the mother of his first child any money, refused to show any outward affection to his daughter, and (although this one is a bit milder in scale) refused to take showers and would put his bare feet up on the conference table.
Oh, also, he refused cancer treatment in favor of new-age healing until it was too late, and then he spent a buttload of money to leapfrog his name on the organ donor list.
Steve Jobs didn't invent s**t. Woz created the Apple computer. Engineers at Apple created all the rest. He was a marketer, just like Edison.
Jony Ive, now Sir Jony, is the Brit who built the iPhone, Jobs launched it.
Jony Ive is just a stylist. All he did was come up with the external aesthetics. Apple's engineers designed the iPhone - using technology developed elsewhere (including British CPU technology - highly developed in part because of Apple putting money into ARM decades before for the Apple Newton which turned out to be a total flop). Jobs did more than just present it to the world, though - people don't like to accept the fact that he was the one who came up with the ideas of what the iPhone ought to be able to do. Everyone else did the actual creative work, but Jobs imagined what the device should be.
Load More Replies...Umm. The fact that Steve Jobs was, in his personal life, a bit of an ar5ehole is not in fact news. I can't imagine anyone who knows anything about him "praising him like a saint' - he was anything but. His management style in his younger days was so awful Apple forced him to resign. What Jobs *did* have was a mind that could conceptualize new gadgets, some of which turned out to be wildly popular. Some of them are even useful...
Jony Ive, who's British, built the iPhone.
Load More Replies...I bumped into him in a shop in Tokyo. We were both looking for ukiyo-e prints. He started making demands to the owner for some work by an artist. "I saw that here yesterday!" "Where is it?" All of a sudden the owner did not speak any English, excused himself to use the telephone and when he finished told Steve that there was another copy, but in Sapporo. Jobs screamed "Sapporo!!??" Owner apologized and Steve left in a huff. I. made my purchase and the owner said in English that was better than my Japanese, "Thank you very much, Come back tomorrow I will have some Utamaro and Hiroshige. And I know you from last year."
He also exclusive ate nothing but raw carrots for years. And it turned his skin a shade of orange. He acted so poorly towards other people, that nobody could tell him anything. His end must have been super painful and probably all alone.
A case of right place, right time, s**t on your friend and take all the credit. Nice job, Jobs!
Not dead, but Oprah’s legacy will definitely be more complicated. She contributed to the hysteria surrounding the Satanic Panic. She’s the reason Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil became famous.

Christiano Ronaldo was accused of r**e but the case didnt go through because the transctipt of him admitting it to his lawyers, detailing the brutality of it, was acquired illegally.

Umm. I think youll find that pretty much the entire population of Conor McGregor's home country - Ireland - knows about the r@pe. 😬

He is despised in Ireland except for a few sad incel racists who worship him.

I believe it depends on who you talk to, but I'd say Charles Lindbergh.
"Lucky Lindy" was adored for his solo transatlantic flight from New York to Paris in 1927. And the nation mourned the kidnapping and m****r of his infant son, Charles Lindbergh Jr., in 1932. (Kidnapping was designated a federal crime because of this case.)
However, Lindbergh was a N**i sympathizer and headed the America First Committee, which was dedicated to keeping the United States out of WWII. He socialized with Nazis during one of his many trips to Germany and received a medal from Hermann Göring, who headed the Luftwaffe, the German Air Force.
Lindbergh also had a secret family in Germany while he was married to Anne Morrow Lindbergh. He had children with two women in Bavaria: Brigitte and Marietta Hesshaimer, and with his European secretary, Valeska. He kept these relationships secret from his wife and his children in America. .
Highly and publicly anti-semitic, one reason the Nazis liked him so much.
He might have had his son killed because the boy had a club foot and large head and therefore wasn't "perfect". Lindbergh was into eugenics.
That's the one I heard about him. Being a N**i sympathizer, it's plausible.
Load More Replies...I've read theories (THEORIES!!) that say the guy they had up for kidnapping the toddler was framed and Lindy might have k!lled the toddler in a rage.
and now the rest of the story.....turns out he was a "deep cover" spy for the USA. His job, eventually was to go to Germany, inspect (with the regime proudly showing it and him!) the German air capability and production means, count fighters, if you will.... as for the kidnapping I have no stance or information to speculate
it was believed by some that Lindbergh killed his son himself, as he was disabled. Bruno Hauptmann may have been innocent.
Forensic evidence is supporting the theory he was at the very least complicit and at worse arranged the kidnapping, etc., of his son. Apparently the child was "horribly deformed" (Lindbergh's own words) because Jr. had a club foot. Lindy just couldn't handle not having a perfect child.
Context is key here, especially when talking about history. First and foremost, prior to WW2, there was an active fear that the next war would end up looking like the last one, which we now call WW1. Keep in mind, there were single battles in that war where a million men died. Trench warfare and poison gas... No one wanted to see that again, and the group Lindy was part of, wanted to keep the US out of another war in Europe. He wasn't a N**i sympathizer though. At least not at the start of things. Keep in mind, Hitler came to power by election in 1933. The war didn't start until 1939. If his association with people who, at the time, weren't at war makes him a sympathizer, then you'd have to also include the likes of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who himself was cordial, even friendly with the N**i recigme in Germany prior to the start of the war. Lindbergh's classification as a sympathizer, however, came AFTER the war ended.
Kabuki Kitsune: a very US-isolationist viewpoint. Roosevelt seemed to understand that if a war broke out in Europe, America couldn't stay out of it; he was never friendly with Hitler's lot, any more than Chamberlain here in the UK was - but both negotiated with them in a cordial fashion until that no longer worked, because that's how to negotiate. Of course Lindberg was a white supremacist anti-democratic N@zi supporter, trying to use US isolationism to help the N@zis win in Europe - he'd been identified as a N@zi sympathizer in 1941 before the US joined WWII. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Lindbergh#Antisemitism_and_views_on_race

Gandhi was a woman beater and made teenage girls sleep in his bed to “help him learn to resist temptation” or some s**t like that.
Mmm. Gandhi was a massive racist and the bit about the young women is true, but I've failed to find any source backing up the claim about him beating women. Not dead yet but the director Roman Polanski was convicted of r**e and/or sodomy of a 13 year old drugged up girl. He fled before sentencing and has been treated as a genius since. He's even won several awards. Several female actresses who were part of the "me too" movement were called out (barely) for signing a petition to have his conviction overturned so he could come back to America. Should be dead.
But whoever even remotely confused Polanski with a saint at any time?
He was the wife of Sharon Tate, right? The one the Manson followers Stabbed or 14 times and hung her and a man named Jay Sebring were hung from a rafter. Not that he's going to jail. It certainly won't stop any other women from p-mping out their daughters just to be around fame. People really think Epstein killed himself. Or Weinstein is actually in jail yeah right. How would you know. Unless you were in that prison to see them for yourself, or in me autopsy room you don't.
We got to see the power of the NBA and the LA Lakers put to work in Kobe's case. Strangest thing was the victim's name, address, etc., were released "by accident" three times before the mistrial was declared. After that, Kobe's "fan base" set in with the death threats against her. It was only after the mistrial that Kobe admitted in a trump-like statement that while, to him, the act that took place wasn't r**e, he could see how the victim saw it as r**e. You know, she said "NO!" and he heard "GO!"
Walt Disney. Built a global empire but also had a history of racism, sexism, and antisemitism that people conveniently forget the moment they walk into Disneyland.
When his artists tried to form a union in the 1930s, good old Walt gave their names to the FBI as Communist agents. (The FBI patted him on the head and told him to go away.)
Fortunately the current Disneyland management maintains the tradition of money-grabbing dishonesty and poor employment practises that Walt visualised.
As Bill Murray put it after working for them, "Those Disney people sure are close with a buck."

Thomas Edison, y'know for not really inventing what he's most famous for.
Thomas Edision is praised for the wrong things. What he *did* invent was the modern "sweat shop" type of research lab, dedicated to exploiting clever engineers and technicians in a way that means the workers get screwed and the company gets rich - at Menlo Park in NJ (not the one in CA). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Edison#Menlo_Park_laboratory_(1876%E2%80%931886)
Fun Fact. Thomas Edison is the reason Hollywood exists. Specifically, because he believed that he owned the copyright to any and ALL film produced, and had no qualms about sending thugs to destroy other studios. So they moved to California, which was too far away for him to be able to do anything about.
He also electrocuted animals in public to show how electricity worked. Before I knew all the bad stuff about him, I liked him but now...what an absolute b*****d.
He was frightened of AC electricity and pushed to keep DC, which would have made it impossible to light cities. He exploited Nikola Tesla, who was a genius but hopeless at marketing, and he actually electrocuted animals to show how "dangerous" AC was!
Yeah, between Henry Ford's development of the same kind of factory, Edison for stealing the work of other people, and that brilliant fellow Thomas Midgley Jr. who invented leaded gasoline AND ozone-destroying refrigerants, and who also invented the use of slippery elm bark to create the "spitball" -- they're all such lovely people.
Steve Jobs
He had a daughter with his h**h school girlfriend. Repeatedly denied paternity despite DNA tests showing otherwise. Claimed that he was sterile which was a lie. That girl lived in poverty while he went on to become incredibly wealthy. He later finally allowed her into his life and (according to her) was a*****e and distant and she said that he frequently would be manipulative and insult her appearance or hygeine
He was also really temperamental towards his employees. Publicly humiliated staff. Close friends even called him self-centered and difficult to work with.
Apple worked with Foxconn, which was a Chinese manufacturing partner that is accused of Harsh Working Conditions, Long Hours, Poor Wages etc. That obviously isn't something unique to Apple. But Jobs was dismissive of these concerns
Apple was also part of a wage-fixing scandal. Conspiring with other Silicon Valley Companies to not poach employees which suppressed salaries across the industry.
He really wasn't a good dude. Apple in general is not a good company. Yet there is very little negative press towards him or the company. A lot more praise than criticism.
Insult his daughter's hygiene? He didn't shower so where did he get off saying anything? Hypocrite!
Honestly, I hate Apple products. Never surprised me that the owner of the company was a giant d*******g.
Steve Jobs was one of the three co-founders, and he was forced out of the firm. The underharnd business methods Bill Gates used to seize a monopoly over the IBM-compatible PC operating system market bear examination if you're wanting to compare ethics - giving MS a dominance in the PC market it still holds today, despite its inferior product (IBM's OS/2, anyone?). No-one ever seems to hate Microsoft, though. It'd be an interesting study in psychology to find out why people so many people hate Apple, which has attracted large-scale hatred from the early Mac days.

One of the few good things that the US Public School System was change out celebrating Columbus Day for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. That allowed us to have parades and marches to honor MLK Day during school hours, since it became a day off for most school districts..

Pretty much ANY Kennedy. They probably have the most sanitized public reputation of any American political family.
J F Kennedy has one thing in his favour: he used his family connections to overcome his medical disqualification from the US armed forces so that he could join the US Naval Reserve and serve in action during WWII. Think about that - a young rising star in a wealthy, well connected US family pulling strings not to get out of a war, but specifically so that he could put himself in the firing line. Criticise him, yes - but recognise that then at least, he acted with courage and honour. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrol_torpedo_boat_PT-109
Compared to our present a****** Kennedy was a saint.

Eisenhower was the first to warn about the military industrial complex.

Was an a*s on set and people hated working with him. And SA'd the actress on the set of The Last Tango In Paris by using butter which he had discussed with the director on the day of shooting and did not inform Maria Schneider before to discuss it with her. He also suggested to "write his lines on Maria's rear end" instead of memorizing his lines but it was rejected.
he never memorized his lines, there were cue cards everywhere on every set.
Absolutely c**p actor. Got an Oscar for shoving cotton wool in his gob. There are many truly great actors who never get an award. Probably fixed in the main.
He drove off with the hot male actors on his motorbike and disappeared for a week.
All the poineers of America. Henry Ford, Rockefeller, Edison, Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, Vanderbilt, Ray Croc anyone that became successful climbed over a lot of people to get to the top.
At least Carnegie founded libraries. The traitor trump climbed over just as many people but has done nothing to benefit society.

Picasso was a woman beater. Dali sold out his friends to the fascists, if I remember correctly he was responsible for Lorca’s death.
Picasso was worse than that, he abused mentally everyone around him, made them all miserable, some of his girlfriends lost their career because of him. He used to beat Dora Maar until she passed out and then painted her to create "la femme qui pleure". Awful guy, really awful. When my Art History teacher taught us about the "genie" he was I asked if he was going to talk about the polemics and he said that no because it wasn't relevant.
Although. I like some of his art, yes he was a terrible human being. This can be obvious for anyone visiting just once the Picasso-museum in Barcelona. And they are not going in details, but as his life is displayed there, one can see.

All those downvotes for pointing out Coco Chanel was never considered saintly and yes, did live in difficult times. When you're reliant on yourself and can't trust anyone else, what do you do? You look after yourself as best you can. Are you so very sure that your behaviour would not be judged more harshly these days if *your* country had been invaded by N@zis? Mike Tyson was found guilty and served his time in prison - that does make a difference if you ask me. He's also a better person than when he was younger.
The only difference is, that he was caught. If he wouldn't have been, he wouldn't come out by himself about being a disgusting r.apist. He is regretting being caught, not his deeds.
Load More Replies...His image has been somewhat rehabilitated. I don't know if he's "beloved."
There seems to be an opportunity for the societal rehabilitation of people who have done bad things in the US. People are reinstated to public acceptance after a couple of talk show interviews. This isn't the case in many other countries. In many places, if you do something really serious to another person, you will never receive positive public attention again.
In 2014, Mike Tyson was being interviewed in Toronto by a journalist at a local tv station, who brought up the allegations and basically dropped a series of f bombs on live television. This was when Rob Ford was the mayor of Toronto, who was infamous for smoking crack who tarnished Toronto’s reputation, Tyson was there to show his support for the mayor as Ford was running for reelection.
He has publicly repented and taken responsibility for what he did. Rapists are the lowest of the low, but he has transformed since then. Most rapists don't do that.
Tyson has always denied the offence. There are worse crimes than r@pe. Yes, there are: mass mvrder, for example. G3nocide. Meanwhile, I can't help noticing that while Tyson gets a lot of hate for his crime (which was vile and inexcusable), the current president of the USA was elected after having been found guilty of r@pe by a court in the USA and for some reason, that doesn't seem to bother people anything like as much.

Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13-year-old cousin and almost everyone remembers him for that other than his music.
When he died, fellow musicians were full of nothing but praise for him and conveniently overlooked this as well as his other misdemeanours.
Compared to most of today's "Rock Stars" he was a saint. Diddy? Ye.?etc.
That one of his many wives was only 13 was actually one of the LEAST disturbing things about his seven marriages. His fifth wife died of a d**g o******e after 77 days; many people around him think he m******d her. His fourth wife drowned under questionable circumstances in a swimming pool days before his divorce was final, allowing him to keep all his money. In the case of his 3rd wife (the 13-year-old), it was his son that ended up dead; she alleged all manners of abuse by him. He married his second wife before his marriage to his first wife was dead. Bing Crosby, known - along with his wife - for terribly abusing his children.
I had a friend whose parents worked as contract background players on the sets, lots and scenes of movies during Hollywood's "Golden Age" when she was a little girl. Every once in a while, they would take her with them and she would be in awe of the various stars she saw, including the ones in the films in which her parents worked and appeared. One of them was one of the "Road" pictures with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Even though her parents usually did not bother those in the main cast, they gave in to their daughter - again, just a little girl, maybe seven, eight or nine years old - who pleaded to meet Hope and Crosby. They took her to Bob Hope first and introduced her. He pulled her onto his lap and immediately treated her as if she was the most important little girl in the world, asking all the usual questions one would of a little girl: what's your favorite school subject?, etc. When he was finished, they - and she later remembered, *very* reluctantly - took her over to Bing Crosby. With their voices shaking, they asked him if their daughter could meet him. He looked at them, looked down at her, and back at them, and then asked with an expression as cold as ice: "Do I have to touch her?".
Wow. That's kind of creepy. I feel bad for any child actors who had to work with him. Hope seems like he was a good guy though. I imagine Crosby was raised in a similar fashion to how he treated his kids. Not an excuse of course but maybe an explanation.
Can confirm, Bob Hope was a really stand-up guy. My grandpa knew him and my mom said he was always very kind and funny

Also fostered a toxic work environment behind the scenes. Very dismissive and demeaning to his female workers. Her legal fight lasted 10 years, she ended up homeless, but then she won and got her payout of several millions. Way to go Holly!

No, he did not steal the idea, A number of people had been working on it for some time, he simply patented his version first when he became aware that someone else had come up with a workable design.
Load More Replies...Bell's wife believed in "oralism" as well, from before they met. The notion was that by focusing on lip-reading, deaf people could remain in contact with the larger society. Not being deaf, I'll defer to those who are, but it hardly makes him a monster that he supported his wife's beliefs that she and other deaf people should learn to read lips, especially when oralism at the time was considered an alternative to eugenics!!!!
That's harsh, and a modern re-interpretation. At the time he was making great strides, he felt, in allowing deaf and dumb people to better integrate into society. His 'objection' (and no, he most certainly did not try to "outlaw" it) to sign language was based on the premise that he was trying to create better ways for them to communicate.

John F Kennedy cheated on Jackie Kennedy repeatedly. His father was a philanderer as well.
Considering what an absolute døuchecanoe his father was, is it any surprise that his children were twisted? Kennedy raised his sons to compete against each other, not in a healthy way, but in a "I will destroy you by any means possible to get father's approval" kind of way. Kennedy, Sr. was also a wife beater and serial philanderer, and had his daughter lobotomized simply because she tried to get out from under his thumb. And that's just a fraction of the man's faults.

Heh. If you think British service personnel in WWII weren't given to racism, think again. I'm British. My grandparents were a similar age to Dahl. Being racist was the default position. But - and it's an important "but" - what you did with your racist attitudes made all the difference. The cheating on his sick wife was indefensible. But, in fairness, his racism wasn't out of step with the time. Japan had done monstrous things in China, and was set to do the same throughout the Pacific. Also, internment was traditionally, and still is in some places, quite normal during war.

Literally, "Saint" Patrick (and his predecessor, Palladius)
Following the Standard Operational Patterns of the era, Cardinal Patrick and his forces committed religious genocide across Ireland at the behest of the then current Pope Celestine I, converting the Island at the point of the sword from paganism to Catholicism (aka "driving out the Snakes"), using converts to his beliefs to force others to either convert or be k****d.
Umm. Almost everything we know about Patrick is unprovable stories, but on the other hand, none of them involve him using violence - after all, how could one man "convert" an island filled with eager warriors at "the point of the sword"? - even if that one man had arrived with his own army (not that anyone's seriously suggesting he did). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick
All the writings of the time were written by the Church, so the lack of evidence is hardly surprising. There's also no evidence to suggest that he did the whole thing on his own. On the other hand, yes, as stated, forced conversion, by force, of whole countries was commonplace throughout that period of history, so on balance I think it's reasonable to assume this was no different.

Such a mean-spirited and judgmental post. As Christians, we believe all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Yet, Sid still has die-hard fans to this day, too, who will defend his reputation as being a lost soul who just got into doing d***s and mixed up with the wrong people.
Such a mean-spirited and judgmental post. As Christians, we believe all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). None of us escapes that truth — not celebrities or readers of Bored Panda. While it’s important to acknowledge wrongdoing, especially when people in power harm others, we’re called to speak truth with GRACE, not scorn. Lists like this often feel more like public shaming than accountability. We should resist judgmental glee and instead pray for transformation — in them and in us.
If Elvis gets a spot, add Bowie. Both so revered the statutory r*pes never get a mention.
I have such a hard time with this - yep, it's statutory r**e and even though the girl said it was consensual it was, without doubt, exploitative and predatory. However, I pause at judging all of history with a modern mind though, things were 'different' then, just listen to some of popular lyrics at the time. No it doesn't make it right, but how much expectation should there be that the decisions made then should be the decisions we'd expect now..“I was an innocent girl, but the way it happened was so beautiful … Who wouldn’t want to lose their virginity to David Bowie?” - I just don't know, should we seperate the biography from the art?
