It’s understandable why we admire celebrities. Many use their fame to support important causes, raise awareness, and donate to charity. On the surface, they seem like real-life heroes.

But behind every wholesome image is a team of publicists working hard to keep scandals under wraps and good deeds in the spotlight. So, while some stars appear squeaky clean, the reality is often more complicated.

And strangely enough, nothing seems to clear a celebrity’s reputation quite like their passing. That’s the theme of this viral Reddit thread, where people are naming famous figures whose shady histories were conveniently forgotten once they were no longer around.

Check out the most surprising examples below.

#1

Black and white portrait of a male celebrity with round glasses and long hair, illustrating Steve Jobs celebrity contrasts. John Lennon. Musical talent aside, the way he treated his ex wife and Julian is appalling. And people let him off far too lightly for the break up of the band, blaming it all on Yoko Ono. He was a grown a*s man who could think for himself.

Not that Yoko is any better. She couldn't be bothered to lift a finger or contribute a single cent towards Julian after John's passing. She inherited John's entire estate worth an estimated $800M at the time of his death. A million would've meant nothing to her, so she obviously was being needlessly petty and spiteful.

On the other hand, Paul looked out for both Julian and his mother. When Cynthia put John's old love letters up for auction because they needed money, Paul bought them and gifted them back to her. He's a class act who deserves his celebrity recognition.

People blame Yoko Ono for lots of things. But I've heard Paul McCartney explain that it was 100% John's idea to leave the Beatles.

The Beatles broke themselves up. And it was not just Lennon. Paul McCartney was an arrogant p***k, and thought HE WAS the Beatles.

Former President Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan waving to a crowd during a public event, smiling and dressed formally. Ronald Reagan

He was a piece of s**t human being, but got away with a lot of it due to his personal celebrity appeal.

He obviously knew about Iran-Contra and lied about it, disparaged Nelson Mandela and supported South Africa's apartheid government, ignored the AIDS crisis, was instrumental in the current wealth inequality that we have today by bringing about "Trickle Down Economics", defunded mental health care and education, gave weapons to the Taliban, busted unions, threw out the Fairness Doctrine, and my personal favorite: sabotaged the Iran Hostage Negotiations behind the scenes so that he could use it against Carter in the 1980 election.

He shouldn't be on Mount Rushmore, he should be under it.

But he truly did want the best for his people, of which I am one. My mother met him (they were both in the Park Lane in 1990) and she said he was always friendly.

Words attributed to Mother Theresa: “There is something beautiful in seeing the poor accept their lot, to suffer it like Christ’s Passion. The world gains much from their suffering.” The problem is that she really, really believed in her own worldview and imposed it on those who were poor and sick. https://allthatsinteresting.com/mother-teresa-saint

There's more than one book about her that tells the unvarnished truth. "Hell's Angel" is one but I read another one years ago (can't remember the title now) written by an Indian person who said Indians from Kolkata really hated her because of how she treated people. The money she raised by being so high-profile didn't go to the poor - it went to the church and to open more convents, not havens for the poor.

Steve Jobs smiling in a black turtleneck, holding up a white smartphone during a product presentation. Steve Jobs. Everyone only remembers him as the guy who created and then saved Apple and “invented” the iPhone. People don’t remember how he f****d over his best friend, knocked up his girlfriend and left her as soon as he found out she was pregnant, refused to give the mother of his first child any money, refused to show any outward affection to his daughter, and (although this one is a bit milder in scale) refused to take showers and would put his bare feet up on the conference table.

Oh, also, he refused cancer treatment in favor of new-age healing until it was too late, and then he spent a buttload of money to leapfrog his name on the organ donor list.

Jony Ive is just a stylist. All he did was come up with the external aesthetics. Apple's engineers designed the iPhone - using technology developed elsewhere (including British CPU technology - highly developed in part because of Apple putting money into ARM decades before for the Apple Newton which turned out to be a total flop). Jobs did more than just present it to the world, though - people don't like to accept the fact that he was the one who came up with the ideas of what the iPhone ought to be able to do. Everyone else did the actual creative work, but Jobs imagined what the device should be.

I think I would’ve gotten the job except salaries were based on the donations they received and sometimes it could be as low as $25 a week. Where is his wife anyway?

Black and white photo of a young man standing in front of a vintage airplane with Spirit of St. Louis written on it. I believe it depends on who you talk to, but I'd say Charles Lindbergh.

"Lucky Lindy" was adored for his solo transatlantic flight from New York to Paris in 1927. And the nation mourned the kidnapping and m****r of his infant son, Charles Lindbergh Jr., in 1932. (Kidnapping was designated a federal crime because of this case.)

However, Lindbergh was a N**i sympathizer and headed the America First Committee, which was dedicated to keeping the United States out of WWII. He socialized with Nazis during one of his many trips to Germany and received a medal from Hermann Göring, who headed the Luftwaffe, the German Air Force.

Lindbergh also had a secret family in Germany while he was married to Anne Morrow Lindbergh. He had children with two women in Bavaria: Brigitte and Marietta Hesshaimer, and with his European secretary, Valeska. He kept these relationships secret from his wife and his children in America. .

He might have had his son killed because the boy had a club foot and large head and therefore wasn't "perfect". Lindbergh was into eugenics.

and now the rest of the story.....turns out he was a "deep cover" spy for the USA. His job, eventually was to go to Germany, inspect (with the regime proudly showing it and him!) the German air capability and production means, count fighters, if you will.... as for the kidnapping I have no stance or information to speculate

Forensic evidence is supporting the theory he was at the very least complicit and at worse arranged the kidnapping, etc., of his son. Apparently the child was "horribly deformed" (Lindbergh's own words) because Jr. had a club foot. Lindy just couldn't handle not having a perfect child.

Context is key here, especially when talking about history. First and foremost, prior to WW2, there was an active fear that the next war would end up looking like the last one, which we now call WW1. Keep in mind, there were single battles in that war where a million men died. Trench warfare and poison gas... No one wanted to see that again, and the group Lindy was part of, wanted to keep the US out of another war in Europe. He wasn't a N**i sympathizer though. At least not at the start of things. Keep in mind, Hitler came to power by election in 1933. The war didn't start until 1939. If his association with people who, at the time, weren't at war makes him a sympathizer, then you'd have to also include the likes of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who himself was cordial, even friendly with the N**i recigme in Germany prior to the start of the war. Lindbergh's classification as a sympathizer, however, came AFTER the war ended.

Kabuki Kitsune: a very US-isolationist viewpoint. Roosevelt seemed to understand that if a war broke out in Europe, America couldn't stay out of it; he was never friendly with Hitler's lot, any more than Chamberlain here in the UK was - but both negotiated with them in a cordial fashion until that no longer worked, because that's how to negotiate. Of course Lindberg was a white supremacist anti-democratic N@zi supporter, trying to use US isolationism to help the N@zis win in Europe - he'd been identified as a N@zi sympathizer in 1941 before the US joined WWII. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Lindbergh#Antisemitism_and_views_on_race

Gandhi and Nehru are solely responsible for the present religious situation in India. If India had not been made a secular country in 1947, it might have progressed far more than it has today. They laid the foundation of religious intolerance, and our politicians are still exploiting it. Every sensible Indian hates Gandhi.

Group of celebrities posing on red carpet at an event, showcasing glamorous fashion and elegant attire, Steve Jobs topic. Not dead yet but the director Roman Polanski was convicted of r**e and/or sodomy of a 13 year old drugged up girl. He fled before sentencing and has been treated as a genius since. He's even won several awards. Several female actresses who were part of the "me too" movement were called out (barely) for signing a petition to have his conviction overturned so he could come back to America. Should be dead.

We got to see the power of the NBA and the LA Lakers put to work in Kobe's case. Strangest thing was the victim's name, address, etc., were released "by accident" three times before the mistrial was declared. After that, Kobe's "fan base" set in with the death threats against her. It was only after the mistrial that Kobe admitted in a trump-like statement that while, to him, the act that took place wasn't r**e, he could see how the victim saw it as r**e. You know, she said "NO!" and he heard "GO!"

Fun Fact. Thomas Edison is the reason Hollywood exists. Specifically, because he believed that he owned the copyright to any and ALL film produced, and had no qualms about sending thugs to destroy other studios. So they moved to California, which was too far away for him to be able to do anything about.

Steve Jobs standing with arms crossed on stage during a presentation, wearing a black turtleneck and jeans. Steve Jobs

He had a daughter with his h**h school girlfriend. Repeatedly denied paternity despite DNA tests showing otherwise. Claimed that he was sterile which was a lie. That girl lived in poverty while he went on to become incredibly wealthy. He later finally allowed her into his life and (according to her) was a*****e and distant and she said that he frequently would be manipulative and insult her appearance or hygeine

He was also really temperamental towards his employees. Publicly humiliated staff. Close friends even called him self-centered and difficult to work with.

Apple worked with Foxconn, which was a Chinese manufacturing partner that is accused of Harsh Working Conditions, Long Hours, Poor Wages etc. That obviously isn't something unique to Apple. But Jobs was dismissive of these concerns

Apple was also part of a wage-fixing scandal. Conspiring with other Silicon Valley Companies to not poach employees which suppressed salaries across the industry.

He really wasn't a good dude. Apple in general is not a good company. Yet there is very little negative press towards him or the company. A lot more praise than criticism.

Steve Jobs was one of the three co-founders, and he was forced out of the firm. The underharnd business methods Bill Gates used to seize a monopoly over the IBM-compatible PC operating system market bear examination if you're wanting to compare ethics - giving MS a dominance in the PC market it still holds today, despite its inferior product (IBM's OS/2, anyone?). No-one ever seems to hate Microsoft, though. It'd be an interesting study in psychology to find out why people so many people hate Apple, which has attracted large-scale hatred from the early Mac days.

J F Kennedy has one thing in his favour: he used his family connections to overcome his medical disqualification from the US armed forces so that he could join the US Naval Reserve and serve in action during WWII. Think about that - a young rising star in a wealthy, well connected US family pulling strings not to get out of a war, but specifically so that he could put himself in the firing line. Criticise him, yes - but recognise that then at least, he acted with courage and honour. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrol_torpedo_boat_PT-109

A man in a black tuxedo with a red rose, reflecting on legacy and public praise after passing. Marlon Brando

Was an a*s on set and people hated working with him. And SA'd the actress on the set of The Last Tango In Paris by using butter which he had discussed with the director on the day of shooting and did not inform Maria Schneider before to discuss it with her. He also suggested to "write his lines on Maria's rear end" instead of memorizing his lines but it was rejected.

Known as the “Gilded age” in the late 19th century. Joseph Pulitzer was a newspaper tycoon at the time who owned the “New York World”. His rival, William Randolph Hearst, who owned the “New York Journal”, are both pioneers of yellow journalism. Given that they were partly responsible for instigating the Spanish-American war, where they would exaggerate facts and influence the public. But Pulitzer admitted to the error of his ways and became a philanthropist who would create the Pulitzer Prize for recognitions in journalism to literature.

Picasso was worse than that, he abused mentally everyone around him, made them all miserable, some of his girlfriends lost their career because of him. He used to beat Dora Maar until she passed out and then painted her to create "la femme qui pleure". Awful guy, really awful. When my Art History teacher taught us about the "genie" he was I asked if he was going to talk about the polemics and he said that no because it wasn't relevant.

Dali was not a f*****t. He described himself as a f*****t, a royalist, a socialist, a communist and an anarchist. His point was that his art was just labelled, so he would make himself titles. And the Spanish police searched the country high and low (Pan's Labyrinth) was people like Lorca. Yes, Dali managed to flee into France but openly showed that he was not going to fit into the f*****t ideal. If anything, Lorca could have been killed by anyone.

All those downvotes for pointing out Coco Chanel was never considered saintly and yes, did live in difficult times. When you're reliant on yourself and can't trust anyone else, what do you do? You look after yourself as best you can. Are you so very sure that your behaviour would not be judged more harshly these days if *your* country had been invaded by N@zis? I'm not defending her so much as pointing out that it's very easy to criticise someone from this distance in history.

There seems to be an opportunity for the societal rehabilitation of people who have done bad things in the US. People are reinstated to public acceptance after a couple of talk show interviews. This isn't the case in many other countries. In many places, if you do something really serious to another person, you will never receive positive public attention again.

Meanwhile, I can't help noticing that while Tyson gets a lot of hate for his crime (which was vile and inexcusable), the current president of the USA was elected after having been found guilty of r@pe by a court in the USA and for some reason, that doesn't seem to bother people anything like as much.

Genius who made absolutely terrific films and expanded the very vocabulary of visual storytelling, but what a twisto.

His fifth wife died of a d**g o******e after 77 days; many people around him think he m******d her. His fourth wife drowned under questionable circumstances in a swimming pool days before his divorce was final, allowing him to keep all his money. In the case of his 3rd wife (the 13-year-old), it was his son that ended up dead; she alleged all manners of abuse by him. He married his second wife before his marriage to his first wife was dead. Bing Crosby, known - along with his wife - for terribly abusing his children.

I had a friend whose parents worked as contract background players on the sets, lots and scenes of movies during Hollywood's "Golden Age" when she was a little girl. Every once in a while, they would take her with them and she would be in awe of the various stars she saw, including the ones in the films in which her parents worked and appeared. One of them was one of the "Road" pictures with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Even though her parents usually did not bother those in the main cast, they gave in to their daughter - again, just a little girl, maybe seven, eight or nine years old - who pleaded to meet Hope and Crosby. They took her to Bob Hope first and introduced her. He pulled her onto his lap and immediately treated her as if she was the most important little girl in the world, asking all the usual questions one would of a little girl: what's your favorite school subject?, etc. When he was finished, they - and she later remembered, *very* reluctantly - took her over to Bing Crosby. With their voices shaking, they asked him if their daughter could meet him. He looked at them, looked down at her, and back at them, and then asked with an expression as cold as ice: "Do I have to touch her?".

Game show host standing near a spinning wheel on a colorful set, related to Steve Jobs celebrity comparisons. Bob Barker.

Lived to 99, beloved gameshow host who brought lovely memories to millions of television viewers for many decades.

Also fostered a toxic work environment behind the scenes. Very dismissive and demeaning to his female workers. And of course, most of the models known as "Barker's Beauties" all sued him when they left the show. They couldn't keep up and eventually settled, but Holly Hallstrom went the distance. Her legal fight lasted 10 years, she ended up homeless, but then she won and got her payout of several millions. Way to go Holly!

Seems like during his tenure it was the "old boys club" attitude and the women staff couldn't fight for their rights or defend themselves, because they were up against Barker and CBS.

Bell's wife believed in "oralism" as well, from before they met. The notion was that by focusing on lip-reading, deaf people could remain in contact with the larger society. Not being deaf, I'll defer to those who are, but it hardly makes him a monster that he supported his wife's beliefs that she and other deaf people should learn to read lips, especially when oralism at the time was considered an alternative to eugenics!!!!

That's harsh, and a modern re-interpretation. At the time he was making great strides, he felt, in allowing deaf and dumb people to better integrate into society. His 'objection' (and no, he most certainly did not try to "outlaw" it) to sign language was based on the premise that he was trying to create better ways for them to communicate.

Considering what an absolute døuchecanoe his father was, is it any surprise that his children were twisted? Kennedy raised his sons to compete against each other, not in a healthy way, but in a "I will destroy you by any means possible to get father's approval" kind of way. Kennedy, Sr. was also a wife beater and serial philanderer, and had his daughter lobotomized simply because she tried to get out from under his thumb. And that's just a fraction of the man's faults.

Heh. If you think British service personnel in WWII weren't given to racism, think again. I'm British. My grandparents were a similar age to Dahl. Being racist was the default position. But - and it's an important "but" - what you did with your racist attitudes made all the difference. There's the "they are different to us" sort of racism and there's the "they're less than us" sort of racism - and worse. I leave the reader to form their own judgements about Dahl; I do not defend him. I do know I never heard any of my grandparents say a harsh word about any of the non-white people who had moved to their part of London since they'd been born in the pre WW 1 era. Germans, on the other hand... (look, if you've lived through both world wars and fought in one of them, I think you're allowed)

There's an issue here. In the 1950's, the age of consent in Mississippi (where Elvis lived at the time) was was 15, though girls as young as 12 could have intercourse with parents' permission. He met Priscilla in germany in 1959, at a military base. At that time, the German age of consent was 16 for heterosexual partners. Though, as miliary bases don't abide by the nation's laws (being foreign territory), it's up to the relevant commanders to decide. At that time, his base's commander was using the Mississippi system. (see earlier in this post).

I read his book the ragman's son. He said some bs about sleeping with 457 women in 458 days so the doctor told that is why he was having impotence problems. HE PUT THIS IN HIS BOOK WHILE MEANWHILE TALKING ABOUT HOW HE LOVED HIS WIFE!!!

I'm sure a lot of the Hollywood people, then and now were completely undeserving of the 'Hero Worship' they received. Should have been punished instead of praised. The thing I'm wondering about is what are the people making the comments in the main posts and etc using as reference? I'm am not sticking up for anyone on this list

R***d Natalie Wood when she was a teen .

Blonde woman in a patterned dress smiling on a stage with flowers, related to Steve Jobs and celebrity reputation discussion. Caroline Flack. She domestically abused her boyfriend by hitting him with a lamp while he slept. She couldn't take the heat of, rightfully, being called an a****r and committed s*****e. Her s*****e is promoted as a tragedy, while her abuse is swept under the rug. She even has a memorial bench in her hometown.

Caroline was a British actor and reality TV host. She had struggled with mental health issues her entire adult life. She admitted hitting her boyfriend as he slept because she was convinced he was cheating. The Police charged her, despite her boyfriend not supporting any prosecution. She had zero history of domestic violence. Caroline took her own life on February 15th 2020. Just a little more perspective on what occurred and why.

Black and white portrait of a man in a cowboy hat and scarf, representing celebrities praised after passing, including Steve Jobs. I highly suggest looking up "Behind the Bastards" podcast episodes on celebrities. The episode on John Wayne was the first that came to mind.

Illustration of a saintly figure with a staff, symbolizing the contrast of celebrities praised like saints after passing. Literally, "Saint" Patrick (and his predecessor, Palladius)

Following the Standard Operational Patterns of the era, Cardinal Patrick and his forces committed religious genocide across Ireland at the behest of the then current Pope Celestine I, converting the Island at the point of the sword from paganism to Catholicism (aka "driving out the Snakes"), using converts to his beliefs to force others to either convert or be k****d.

Umm. Almost everything we know about Patrick is unprovable stories, but on the other hand, none of them involve him using violence - after all, how could one man "convert" an island filled with eager warriors at "the point of the sword"? - even if that one man had arrived with his own army (not that anyone's seriously suggesting he did). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick

All the writings of the time were written by the Church, so the lack of evidence is hardly surprising. There's also no evidence to suggest that he did the whole thing on his own. On the other hand, yes, as stated, forced conversion, by force, of whole countries was commonplace throughout that period of history, so on balance I think it's reasonable to assume this was no different.

As one born and bred in Ireland. The Pagans were not driven out, just underground. I had many in my lineage who went to church, but did other things in secret.

There's no sign that early Christian missionaries preached hatred or bigotry in any form. It's an insult to compare them to modern evangelicals and southern Baptists who do just that; people who are to my mind profoundly anti-Christian. I don't know a lot about Pentacostalism.

Third entry for JFK in the list. Yes all the criticisms are valid - but JFK used family connections not to avoid military service but so he could fight in WWII - despite medical disqualification. Some presidents did it the other way round...

I make a distinction between unrepentant monsters, monsters who were pressured into cleaning up their act, and repentant monsters who saw enough s**t and decided, "no, there's a better way." Prince was in class 3. And it wasn't "convenient"; he passed up on a lot of money to undo the misogyny he had created.

I understand much of his music was created by all the musician friends he had who hung out with him at his studio. But he never gave them credit.
