With so many musicians to choose from, it is not a wonder why the number of overrated singers has risen quite a lot. Sometimes, it’s the fandom's fault due to their overpraising of them, and other times it’s the music they create, or the lack of it, in some cases. Overrated musicians can come from a lot of different eras and genres. Multiple factors add to the overhyping of the most overrated musicians.
No matter the music genre or the era they come from, overrated artists can come from every corner of the world. Famous musicians like Mozart and DJ Khaled get placed on top of the pyramid as some of the greatest ever. But when you look at their competitors, you might notice that they are mediocre to good. Of course, music is very subjective, so it’s not a wonder why the most overrated singers might be on the list of your favorite artists.
Want to know if your favorite music artist is just an overrated celebrity that might not be worth the fame? Well, the internet is here to share some knowledge. User RedChia1080 asked an interesting question in the AskReddit community just about this topic. With so many answers, we have compiled the best ones in the list below. If you agree with the opinion of strangers on the internet, leave an upvote. On the other hand, if you have anything to say in defense of the artists, share it in the comments below.

stefsnacks replied: "I just... Don't care for her music? My best friends crucify me when I say this, but I don't get where she gets this reputation of being such a lyricist. As far as I can tell her lyrics aren't anything super special. I like my lyrics to be more poetic, maybe that's why I don't get it? (to me one of the best lyricists is Bruce Springsteen)"
Her beats are strange and her voice is never in time. Always sounds like 3 songs mashed together...
Agreed. I'm not keen on her music and have never understood the hype. Not saying she's bad, just not my thing and definitely not some higher being type level folk go on about.
Isn't she a lyricist in the way that boy/girl band members who throw their toys out of the pram and demand to be taken seriously as an 'artiste' get a co-writing credit for contributing words such as 'and', 'I' and 'the' to a song in order to keep them happy? Plus, if you dance and sing at the same time, sorry but I don't take you seriously.
so bing crosby? judy garland? james brown? you don't take any of them seriously?
Load More Replies...Sometimes I feel y are forced to like an artist even if y liked them for the first time. But the media, friends makes us feel no sth is wrong with our taste but in reality this is also one of their strategies. They unnecessarily make hype and gossip so we become connected with them somehow even if we don't like them.
Sincerely speaking, her lyrics are c**p. Well not all of them. Judging from her last album. She is so overrated.
I love her. I love Destiny's Child. I don't love her as a solo artist.
Drake
"Doesn’t write his own lyrics. Doesn’t produce his own beats. Sings in all auto tune. Raps about being a gangster and starting at the bottom but he was on a Canadian teen drama where he played a kid in a wheelchair so he got to sit on his *ss all day. Talentless hack."
I have always been anti-Drake based on his lack of lyrical skills. I just never enjoyed it. People would be like, listen to this bit it’s amazing, but I never found it good. Now I learn he’s not even writing them? On the flip side, I loved Degrassi! Lol.
Someone didn't watch that "Canadian Teen Drama". From what I watched in an early interview with Drake, him and a friend produced their music in a van they owned, on their own before they got with a record label. I don't like the music. It's too monotone and unrelatable.
Thank you!!!!! I mean, as a person he is decent, but all his music is just kind of bad.
He doesn't use all auto-tune, rarely spits gangster raps, I could go on with everything wrong with your post😂 mad?

The guy could've been a pretty decent musician (he's got indeed a good singing voice and knows how to play a variety of instruments), but he just got stuck with the 'selling stuff' regardless if it was actually good or not, and it ruined him as a musician.
I feel bad for the child he was. He has a wonderful talent. Wake him from a dead sleep and tell him to sing an E and he'll hit it center of mass every time, I'm sure of it. Because of it, he got groped by such as Jenny McCarthy and everyone was like haha so funny the older lady wants to touch the 15 year old! He is so lucky! when no that's intrusive and gross and traumatizing. This isn't even the s**t that happened to him outside of the view of cameras, or the things that were brushed off because not famous people did them to him. I mean I'd be a d**k too if something I loved doing suddenly meant that I wasn't allowed to have a childhood. Honestly though hold me up and ask me to name just one of his songs and I can't. But every time I've heard him on TVs or whatever just by existing, he's been completely on pitch with great breath control and we love to see that.
I like him and he has a lot of talent. Sure glad my youth wasn't front page news when I was growing up.
As far as human beings go he's an absolute tw@tbasket. A narcissistic, petulant, immature jackass with a long history of treating other people like trash, even nowadays. The only song he came out with that maybe comes close to being decent is Lonely, but then you remember who's singing it and it's impossible to take it seriously anymore.
I read the other day that Donny Osmond would like to record with him. I will stick with Donny solo or with his family members.
Cardi B
Edward_the_Dog said: "Not a musician. She’s a product."
markymrk720 replied: "Her episode on Letterman’s My next Guest is… was so cringey."
She is an absolute moron. Talks like a total idiot..hopefully its an act, but i doubt it
Her songs are beyond innapropriate to the point where they are bad. If a song has a few swears and some discreet sexual references it’s good, but when every other word is messed up, it’s not good.
No, sexual references is not good, but swearing is fine as long as it’s not every single line
Load More Replies...Cardi B is a transphobe and a rapist. I hate that she denies raping the men she dated, but she did. The internet has proof that she did rape all the men she dated in the past. Oh, there's also proof that she's transphobic.
Kid Rock
"Don't care what he's rated, it's better than he deserves. If the worst music ever recorded were stuffed in a trash bag, Kid Rock would be the liquid that leaks out on the kitchen floor."
He's a horrible person and a fake. He acts like he's got a working class background and that he's from Detroit. His dad owned multiple car dealerships and he grew up in a mansion 40 miles from Detroit.
I saw it on Reddit and didn't recognize him until i saw the comment that it was him; I just thought it was another stereotypical gun douche
Load More Replies...I like his old stuff, pre-let's get all political all the time. Now, almost unlistenable.
I was laughing about him shooting the Dylan beers. I'm not a fan of Dylan but he's a social media star and I don't use it so I'll say indifferent. So kid rock buys the Bud Light with her likeness on it and shoots them. Literally does he know that he paid Bud Light money for them. Who gets the last laugh? BL all the way to the bank. It is also TONS of press for BL which is probably helping them to sell even more. Hilarious.
Sorry *she's a social media star. It wasn't intentional.
Load More Replies...He has 2 songs I like. That one when he 1st came out, the one that goes, Bongda dang ditty or something and that one, All Summer Long. Those are good, can't hear the rest.
Isn't All Summer Long the one that sounds like both Sweet Home Alabama and Werewolves of London?
Load More Replies...Adam Levine
"He is such a f*cking tool. Literally made one good album (imo) with Maroon 5. Songs about Jane was fantastic, but I can't escape his s*ckage. His very existence is just irritating..."
He cheated on his pregnant wife with other women on Twitter. That thing he did made me stop listening to Maroon 5 altogether and made me hate him a lot.
I loved when his utter cockiness was slammed to the ground when he was having internet "affairs" on Insti, which resulted in him being TROLLED for his absolute cringick behavior and was it ever cringe and ick.
Ariana Grande
Commenter said: "Beautiful voice. Cliche pop songs. Actually a lot of pop stars have that problem."
DidDunMegasploded replied: "Needs to attend her own School of Diction...well, a lot of pop artists do, but she is by far one of the worst offenders."
I think she has an amazing voice but her songs aren't the best - I've seen her sing other peoples songs and thought she sounded way better than when she did her own
SAMEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! Her songs are so good. My al ltime favs are enchanted, atwtmvtv, illicit affairs, chamange problems, blank space, ma&thp, lover, last great american dynasty and I could go on!
Load More Replies...Same problem as Sam Smith, I don’t want to hear her EVER! Like, maybe her vocals would fit in a musical, or a Disney song, and you think. Hey that sounds nice. but on the radio? It’s a big NO for me. Uggh. Plus, and I know I’ll get hate for this… She just seems like such a terrible person! Nothing particular, just the vibe.
I really liked her on Victorious, and wanted to like her music, but I feel very neutral about it.

"Picked a fight in rap ...' c-rap ain't exactly Mike Tyson .... c-rap is more like ... Barney or Teletubbies (c-rappers say the same stupid s**t, like they know anything about life or "music" - which, clearly, they don’t).
I had barely even heard of him when he did straight rap stuff, but now he's gone punk/rock, I actually really like him.
Sam Smith
CubanLynx312 said: "I still can’t believe they went with Sam Smith over Radiohead for the Spectre opening."
dandybaby26 replied: "I think their singing abilities are good but it’s just the tonal quality of their voice that I can’t stand. Sounds very garbled, likely from tongue tension."
Radiohead nearly did a Bond song?? I'd love to have heard that. Am feeling robbed now.
An old boss of mine once said they’d never heard anyone sound so soulful. I should have taken that as a warning about that boss (he was a bully and not to be trusted). I LOATHE their voice, it’s nasally and grates on my ears like nails on a blackboard, I can barely understand what they say, and their songs are just terrible. Their latest video however was a hoot, loved it, just not the song.
I like Sam. Sam is also entitled to be who they are but it got to be too much. Is too much and I naturally just gravitated away. Do you boo.
Personally I disagree. I like SS and RH, but that's just my opinion.
I feel like his voice is actually good, but I don’t want to hear it EVER. It’s like nails on a chalkboard to me!! He would fit in like a musical I think, but on the radio, against my will… n no songs have that catch factor for me. Just ugggh.
Jennifer Lopez
ElderCunningham said: "She's gone way downhill ever since Taco-Flavored Kisses."
SleaterK7111 replied: "I would disagree that J-Lo is overrated - I don't think she has ever really been 'rated'.
Surely conventional wisdom would be she has a handful of well-written pop songs, which she didn't write, and simply contributed her vocals. She can't sing particularly well, the world cringed as one at Jenny From the Block, and her career has been pedestrian ever since.
Or is that an unfair appraisal?"
LeicaRedEye replied: "I prefer her as an actor than as a singer. And that says a lot."
Or act only a good dancer and performer.
Load More Replies...JLO is a 2000s icon who dances amazingly and sings like she talks. Still love her.
She doesn't really sing any of her songs. Her "vocals" in "I'm Real" are actually Ashanti's vocals that have been credited to her. That becomes clear when you hear Jennifer say the N word in the song.
Load More Replies...Yeah she's famous for being famous. She only has concerts in NY, Miami & Vegas.
I still to this day believe she'd still be a fly girl if Selena were still with us. No one had really heard Lppez until she starred as Selena. Selena was wonderfully talented!
Jennifer doesn't actually sing any of her songs. What we're actually hearing is recordings of demos by other female R&B singers that have been credited to her and that is such a scumball move in her part.
Women on IG are some much damn hotter, why would anybody want this s**t?
Harry Styles
scrawnymfkr said: "He is a talented performer but his music is very mid and commercial."
MisterMarcus replied: "For me, he kind of falls between the cracks of being not quite 'pop' enough to be fun and entertaining, but also not quite 'indie' enough to be interesting and mysterious."
What's wrong with music being commercial? Whether it's an artist aim to be commercial or not, they want to make a living out of it. Even some bands that are considered "underground" or simply not so broadly known have had some mild commercial success, like Jethro Tull and Yes. As long as the musc is good I couldn't care less on how commercial it is (Queen for instance, excellenet musicianship IMO, and they have always been as commercial as they get).
He needs to wash off the sharpie doodles some kid did on his body. Lol.
His music is decent, but people make him sound like hes some kind of goddess. That doesnt mean he's bad, it just is kind of annoying, tbh.
Taylor Swift
therufus22 said: "She does have a good voice, but all of her recent songs just sound the same."
Commenter replied: "Honestly… her voice isn’t even that good. It’s not terrible, just basic af and most of the time it just sounds like she’s talking. There are so many other artists in the game with much better voices and more talent. She can write some good lyrics occasionally though."
I've met her twice and she's a sweetheart. I think her catch is that she writes music people can identify with and it sounds like you're talking with a friend. Yeah, she doesn't have the best voice but she doesn't claim to.
I agree she's not an amazing singer, but she's good, and a great song writer who tells stories with her songs that are relatable to people. She definitely has talent in my opinion but more so on the writing side
I like her. She's definitely not my favourite, but I had a swiftie phase and I still listen to blank space occasionally
Blank space is actually my favorite from her 1989 album
Load More Replies...I recently came to love her, and I actually appreciate her voice!!! It’s not over the top, or super rangey, but it’s pleasing to my ear… and I hated her for a VERY long time.
Thank you for becoming a swiftie. We need more people like u who r swifties
Load More Replies...Are you kidding? Taylor Swift is awesome!!! People are just jealous because they know they that they will never be as good as her! Its ok not to be a swiftie, but even if your not you should still respect her. She is a good person.
I love her so so much and I am not gonna lie just to support a post. Her songs are evergreen like love story, exile, new romantics, bad blood ,blank space etc. They are so unique!!.
Most people don't like her for her voice though. They like her for her lyrics
Bono

Agreed! They lost me with Vertigo - uno, dos, tres, catorce... really!? 1, 2, 3, 14!!! Ffs Bono..
Load More Replies...Do you know the difference between God and Bono? God doesn't go around Dublin telling everyone he's Bono.
Disagree here, he is awesome and has been making hits for over 40 years. The Edge is a great song writer and Bono and him together just vibe so sweet.
Yeah. I guess I'm not cool because I still love their music. Then again, I also like Cold Play, who everyone else hates.
Load More Replies...Bono shouldn't be on this list! This list should be for the "special ones"
I have never heard anyone say "oh he's such a great singer", he's ok, doesn't suck but IMO doesn't stand out from the crowd. And yes, some U2 songs are "meh", some others I can still enjoy. Their music does bring back some good memories though.
Agree with all of this. They have a couple of good songs but that's it.
Last great album was Achtung baby, then good was Pop and All that you can leave behind.
Dj Khaled

Mozart

Inevitable-March1485 replied: "Also he forgot to write lyrics for the most songs."
Let's not forget his creation "Leck mich im Arsch", dude was ahead of his time
But Mozart was a performer/composer of his own music, NOT a singer! And, he had people writing lyrics for his song as collaborative work because he focused on the music, nothing wrong with that. Approval of lyrics had to go through him anyway, so they could perfectly match his operas.
You know, Elton John writes the sheet music for his songs, but his collaborator Bernie Taupin would write the lyrics. I found that interesting.
Mozart and Swift on the same list? Mozart can mop the floor with Taylor
Jared Leto
"If you watch the 30 Seconds to Mars documentary, it makes it crystal clear that Leto is a sh*te musician."
Bad Bunny
"As a Hispanic man, I can't imagine why this 2 bit regaetonero is famous."
I despise this guy. His 'singing' voice is absolutely hideous, music is horrible and lyrics are even worse! I feel so ashamed that people now associate Latinos with this garbage.
Look up his bio, it literally says "total lack of vocal singing technique".
Pitbull
"He is kind of a guilty pleasure for me, like I’d never play his music just on its own, but it’s fun at a party."
Any reggaeton "singer" is overrated. and yes, they're "singers", if you look them up on the web for many the description of their voice goes something like "complete lack of vocal technique".
Is that the dude who sings “woopam garmgum style”? Or however that’s spelled
Haha no. Gangnam Style is by a Korean artist named Psy.

The only thing I know about her is she had a couple of Elon Musks kids and their "names" if you can even call then that were so bazaar that they were actually legally required to change their kids name
Listen to Ishagami Eyes, total ear worm! I feel in love with it without knowing it was her! And no, I did not double check the spelling…tee hee.
Oh, I had the same reaction. I read so much about how she was the quirky, eccentric musician, doing weird, outside-of-the-box music. And it was the most generic, paint-by-numbers c**p I'd ever heard.
That’s how I feel about Phoebe Bridgers… She’s the Avril Lavigne of the Indie scene.

Her music has gotten better over time. I recall that one song people said was so boring. I think it was "Go". That one grew on me. But her later work became more innovative. Her earlier work was still creative and original.

You really give rock music a bad name.

Overrated as hell. We have a funny joke in my school tho. Our classroom is right above a toddler classroom so whenever we are the loud and jumping around, the babies get traumatized. Billie Eilish
"Billie Eilish represents a specific type of song that was kind of innovative and interesting for 5 minutes. And now we think it's overrated, because it is no longer a fad.
I suspect we will literally never know or care if Billie Eilish is a talented musician or not.
Ditto: Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Imagine Dragons, etc. You make something cool, then everyone copies it, then everyone gets bored of it, and then everyone decides *you're* boring. Repeat."
Meh, I thought she was cliche and boring the first time I heard it.
Her voice is very interesting to me, and I can definitely see the appeal of her music although it really doesn't speak to me. Her voice is very unique and cool tho
Her song Bad Guy got forced into so many movies that I know the entire song by heart without having even heard it once on my own initiative

I was a huge fan in the 10s. Even had pit seats for her Witness 2017 tour in Atlanta. She's not a nice person. She isn't. She went for Taylor calling her washed up in the Swish Swish single and as Taylor is in the apex of her career, poor Ms. Perry is hosting American Idol. Note: I'm not a huge fan of TS either.
The first time I heard Firework i hated it. Sounded like there was a catfight in her throat.
Yngwie Malmsteen
"Considered the greatest guitarist in history by many, all of his music sounds the same. Just super fast notes going widdly widdly, it's all classical sauce and sounds like christmas horror music at times which is cool but it never breaks that mold. I would put others like Tosin Abasi and John Petrucci over him. They may not be on the same level as Malmsteen in some areas but it's all about how music hits the ear, and I can only listen to like 2 Malmsteen songs anymore because the rest is going to be just shredding for the sake of shredding. Don't get me wrong, he's amazing, but I can't call him the greatest, even when we're talking skill level. If you see some of these flamenco guitarists shred then you'll see who I'm talking about."
A friend of mine highly recommended him, telling me that I would be blown away by his musicianship. I listened to one of his tracks, and thought, "Pretty flashy. Not bad." So I listened to another track, and thought, "Didn't I just hear this?" 10 seconds into a third track, and I thought, "You must be joking. It's exactly the same!"
His songs can be very similar, but he also has a lot of diversity. Try listening to Far Beyond the Sun and then follow that up with Blue and end it with Crystal Ball. All distinctly different and showcase his range. EDIT: Yngwie is not a singer so not sure why he is on an overrated singers list.

Isn't he like one of the most rejected artists as it took him a very long time to get signed and was doing everything himself? Like Taylor swift he's a decent enough singer but a better songwriter. However, watching him create his whole set using that loop record thing is pretty impressive
Yeah! That! That was novel as hell, and novel tricks in music don't usually end up being such a part of the whole, or end up just being for the sake of themselves.

Have to disagree here. They do have pretty profound music if you look beyond the "generic car commercial songs" (and let's be frank, even those are better than 95% of mainstream radio music). Plus Dan Reynolds is genuinely a cool guy.
everyone has their reasons and it's their prerogative
Load More Replies...I think the are decent BUT you have to be into that kind of music. Try listening to Depeche Mode. Then you will see what a lot of random phrases in song lyrics sounds like (and how it can still sound good)
I disagree here. Ok not to like of course but they try to have a good message.
I think they bother me more because I'm not a fan, but still occasionally hear myself singing the chorus to Thunder during a good storm for giggles.
I love their music, how is their lyrics bad, i think it’s wonderful, and can barely consider any of the songs I’ve heard from them bad, maybe they’re not all good, but most of them all. Though I do get bored of them sometimes, mainly because they’re one of the only bands I listen to
My entire school was obsessed with them in 3rd grade. They're high key cringy in retrospect
Kerry King Of Slayer
"He is overrated. Imo. The guy has a terrible solo style and any good slayer solo was played by Jeff Hanneman."
Adele
TheSockMonster said: "I wish I could upvote more. I don't think she's bad person (she can sing, but I really don't like her voice). But I just don't get why she is so popular. Even the slightly more upbeat tunes are dull and bland at best."
KimmyWex1972 replied: "Agreed. Other than 'Rumor has it' all her songs are kinda sad and borrringgg. She does have a good voice tho."
They mad b/c she can sing WITHOUT autotune or lip-syncing her albums.
I love Adele because of my grandma she was the sweetest person and loved Adele and Adele is one of the few memories left of her RIP Mama Kim you will be missed
I'm not a fan to be honest, just isn't my thing but she is a great singer. I just think her show would be pretty dulln
Nickelback

As an adult I recognize that some of their music is actually really catchy and the guys in the band seem super down to earth and chill. Glad they never focused on all the hate they got because it was definitely unwarranted. And I was definitely part of the problem."
Yawndr replied: "They just got overplayed. Not their fault."
I never understood the hate on them too. I like a lot of their songs and every time I hear Photograph, it just brings back all those way back memories and I get a little misty. Look at this photograph Every time I do, it makes me laugh...
I think they did get overplayed, not a bad band but overplayed. One of the guys here where I am every once in a while plays their music on repeat throughout the day and we all roll our eyes. Let them rest dude..
I think People hate them because people like to feel like their apart of something. All the hate is really unwarranted. I mean seriously J-lo treats people like s**t but people seem to love her.
Seriously. They're not the best band in the world. But I've heard far far worse
It's was cool to hate them in 2010 when I did it. Now you're too late. Lol
Lars Ulrich
JKdriver said: "I’m a Metallica fan, but man, Lars was a real douche in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. I do appreciate that now, like 20 years later, he finally admits Napster was the wrong hill to die on."
Hillan replied: "He might be overrated as a drummer, but as a visionary musician he is underrated if anything. People don't realise how many of the good things about Metallica music are because of him."
His skill lies in arranging songs and sorting out the business side of things. Brian Tatler from Diamond Head (a band that influenced Metallica when they were starting) said that Lars helped him sort out his publishing rights. He said by doing that he could keep his career rather than having to get a job outside music.
Even among people in the music business, Lars is considered a terrible drummer. But I do agree his band vision and leadership has been instrumental in getting Metallica to where they are at today. EDIT: Lars is not a singer so not sure why he is on an overrated singers list.
Load More Replies...What a boring world it would be if everyone liked exactly the same things. ... stop bashing so many Canadian artists.
Sounds like a bunch of bitter haters... just because you don't like an artist, it doesn't mean they don't deserve their fame... like wtf? Do I like all of these artists? Nope. I don't like the Majority of them... but do I think that my taste is superior to everyone else's so much so that I think any artist that doesn't fit into my taste shouldn't exist? F**k no. That's the beauty of music. There's a place for everyone. Whether you're the one making the music or you're the one consuming it.... there is something for you or a fan base for you! So don't ever let anyone tell you that you don't "deserve" to be heard or that your taste in music is s****y. It's not. They're just entitled a******s who probably don't even make music themselves... therefore their opinions are s**t to begin with... any person who thinks they're entitled to dictate what should & shouldn't exist, especially in terms of the arts... should probably stfu cause they're the problem. Lol.
Madonna has never hit an actual note, even after being trained for Evita. She's petty and only sings about her vagina in some capacity. I've lost all respect for her.
