What? Now I'm wrong if I say that GENERALLY women are less physically strong than men?! I think you're contradicting me for the sake of it. And to reiterate the message: it's never ONE factor, it's a combination of many. I think you're aware that many people attribute the lack of women in certain fields to the fact that, in their opinion, women don't want to work hard, to toil, aren't you? Since I don't believe that (I think it's mostly the opposite case) I tried to think of other aspects that might contribute to this statistics. I might be wrong? Sure, it's possible. Are there women who don't apply or share these "factors"? Certainly. But that can't deny the fact that for many women those factors are important and true and you, saying it's basically just the patriarchy, diminish the struggles and problems that women experience everyday. Instead of saying "you're wrong, no women think that or feel this way" we should take it as an imput to eliminate these obstacles.

But when did I say that's correct or right? I just stated some of the impediments that can stop MANY women from applying for a job. Obviously there are female militaries, female engineers on oil rigs, female night guards, female on call-plumbers, ecc but they are a minority. Is it all just because of the patriarchy or because of misogynistic views? Cmon, that's just not possible. And your comment saying that these stereotypes come from women more than men is indeed misogynistic. Women don't give a damn if a member of their sex decides to enter a typically male work force, good for her, less competition for other women, no? It's men who have problems with women, "intruding" into something they think they didn't belong: aerospace engineering, marathons, police corps...

I have a real problem with the implication that women are not as capable of camaraderie as men; as a woman in the military myself, I can say with authority that that's completely wrong. Also, women work long period shifts; nursing is dominated by women and is famously grueling for the length of its shifts. Frankly, all of this sounds like a bunch of soft-handed attempts to justify why some professions have continued to be male-dominated despite women battling to be included in these professions; it's one thing if a woman tries but doesn't make the cut, but in many of these positions, they're either not allowed to even try or face so much hostility from the established boys' club that it's not worth it.

Camaraderie (I've learned a new word, thanks) is of course something women are capable of, I meant certain aspect of living secluded for very long periods of time with men. Some women, myself included, wouldn't be a-ok with that, for safety reasons. And about long shifts I obviously didn't mean hours long, like nurses do, I meant being away for months at a time on a oil rig or something like that. And finally, I'm not implying that those factors are the only one that prevent women from choosing this job but I think on some level, for many women, they could interfere. Period. And I'm also definitely not saying that it's right or it's excusable, I'm just saying what happens.

Well I guess my role as supervisor of a team of 16 men is null and void. I have female friends in the military, many of whom have been posted overseas whilst their military husbands/partners stayed home with the kids. Your comment about female tradies not feeling safe going into a stranger's house - that's a very insulting observation on your part. Everything you've said in your comments is exactly what this entire post is about. You are insulting all women with your comments.

I don't expect that a man could understand what women feel or fear. I can guarantee that many women (again NOT ALL WOMEN) would not feel comfortable going to strangers' houses all the time, even if it's for their job. I think carefully whenever I decide or have to enter a stranger house or car (for any reason): does someone know I'm here? Maybe I should text my friend about my location, ecc. Women, am I paranoid?

My mom didn't when she was working as a police officer pulling over strangers, and she had to wear her holster and gunbelt to make weight in the academy so she was this skinny tall pretty blonde in her 20s arresting guys that yes were stronger than her because lbs for lbs as much as it sucks they are, I don't think it mattered she had a gun, it wasn't like she unholstered it. Her partner would've usually stayed in the car unless multiple people or something seemed off... But I grew up watching her OFF DUTY not be afraid of everything like a little mouse, if it's someone's job to go door to door, that didn't used to be considered dangerous work, and the world hasn't become more dangerous in the last 30yrs.. It's just now everyone has social media and doom scrolls until they're so scared they don't know who their neighbors are and they refuse to let their kids play outside

I dunno, the last plumber I had working on my house (had kitchen replaced) was female. There were two or three plumbers but the one who was there the most was a woman. And I don't see any reason she would have been scared, she was carrying a wrench and other tools if she ever needed to defend herself and she was bloody strong (most tradies are). And besides, most plumbers aren't individuals, they're part of a business so other people know they're at a job. They're not really a good "target" for a pervert because (a) they know the perverts' name and address, (b) other people know where *they* are if they go missing.

In the US most tradies might be part of a business but in Italy I've always encountered single business owner tradies, unless of course they are working on a big project. So everyone's experience is different I guess. I've never met a woman working in those fields, except for a girl learning the trade from her dad. I'm convinced that there are many reasons why very few women do these jobs, and it can't only be addressed to "innate misogyny", "a patriarchal society" and stuff like that. Instead of replying "wow, you're so wrong, my friend is in the army, my cousin Jane is a plumber, ect" why don't take my inputs as a way to reflect and to suggest resolutions?

Firstly I'm Australian not from the US nor from Italy so my experience of how trades work obviously reflects that. Secondly I never said "wow you're so wrong". I merely pointed out why a female tradie *shouldn't* be scared. As for numbers of women in trades, I think my perception of gender balance is a little skewed because I used to work in Government and for decades there's been a strong push for more women in the workplace there. Apparently most trades are still very male dominated (around 98%) though it is changing. The private sector takes longer to catch up.
