Trips to the grocery store can be pretty frustrating for many people these days. If you’re not dealing with a blatant case of sneakflation, you’re faced with misleading product packaging that may make you curse the heavens for the existence of corporate consumerism.

Hyperbole aside, you can also snap photos for the internet to see, much like what these people did. The following images may evoke a mix of laughter, despair, and disappointment – all at the same time.

Scroll through and feel free to join in the conversation by sharing photos of your own if you have any.

Actually, this is the (first) one that's BS: Any natural way of holding them would allow them to slide together and break the illusion of filling both sides of the package to the very end. He had to squish both ends to their respective end of the packaging, flatten his hand horizontally and then balance the package on his hand.

There are several ways companies deceive consumers through their packaging. Researchers from Kiel University in Germany found that it also happens through the color of packages.

According to their findings, products with a lighter color are more likely to be perceived as “healthier” but with “less taste.” This supposed tactic has a significant influence on a consumer’s decision to make a purchase.

*This* is the *exact* reason why truth in advertising laws were enacted! Manufacturers were always pulling this cräp back in the 1800s, and they haven't forgotten how. I don't see how they're getting away with it legally, unless maybe listing the weight/volume on the container gets them a pass. Consumers unite! Keep naming and shaming on the web.

Deceptive packaging is a form of false advertising, which is both illegal and unethical. Yet, why do companies resort to this tactic? According to author and entrepreneur Amanda Arthur Krill, competitive pressure tends to push corporations into this direction.

If that photo is showing the product level up to the protuberance on the bottle, then that is about 80% full. Not everything can be packed full, as if it were to expand due to an increase in temperature it would leak or explode. As long as it has a net weight on it and is priced accordingly, there shouldn't be an issue.

As consumers, falling victim to deceptive marketing tactics is inevitable. However, we can protect ourselves simply by having a basic understanding of these practices. According to the Chicago-based law firm Almeida Law Group, class action lawsuits are helpful but should be considered the last resort.

Being cautious of exaggerated claims would suffice. The firm also advises keeping records of transactions and communications, while being aware of common scams and fraudulent practices.

I honestly don't trust this one. Maybe it was a mistake in the factory, but these usually come with two indivudually sealed silver bags with the wafers. This one to me seems like a factory error, or OP opening the container and taking out one bag so they could post this on Reddit.

So mixed reactions here of people claiming to have bought them - how many does the tin contain then? Weight is indicated on the outside, so if the tin contains only half of it, it is a production mistake. And the wafers would have been broken during transportation.

    Cheese Balls Size Comparison

Evolution of Utz Cheese Balls packaging from 2010 to 2024 showing changes in label design and container size.

I love stuff like this. My family has saved cheese ball buckets for years, and finally, after cleaning out some stuff, I found some with significant expiration age gaps. We've been robbed. Take me back to 2010. It's absolutely ridiculous how they reduced the size and thought we wouldn't notice.

This Veet Packaging Designed To Make You Waste Product (And Buy More)

Misleading packaging of Veet hair removal cream with a large pump bottle but a small, nearly empty inner container inside.

I was using this hair removal cream earlier today, and it stopped dispensing. Tried the usual tricks to get some to pump out, no dice. But it felt too heavy to be actually empty. So, I tried taking the top off, thinking there'd be a little in the bottom I could scoop out and use.

Got it open; it turns out the tube to the pump only goes about halfway down, and the cream is actually in a bag inside. The bag was connected to the opening, so I cut it to get the bag free.

It is assumed that shrinkflation is the cause, but with some food items there is a second possibility. With prevalence of nutritional information on the front of packaging, particularly the clear red/amber/green to indicate how healthy something is, I noticed some companies seemed to reduce the stated portion size, instead of altering the recipe, in order to 'make' a portion healthier.

Of all the pre-packaged groceries I've seen, Li'l Debbie had the largest covid price surge, from $1.25 to $3.99 for a package. Probably because they finally drove the company they were undercutting (Hostess) out of business so had far less price pressure.

Many popular snacks and foods are highly processed and some people enjoy the new/altered flavour//texture more than the original food. Many snack foods are scientifically designed for the optimal mouth feel and consumer satisfaction so I get why so many people enjoy them. I mean, beef jerky has nothing of the flavour of a steak but I still enjoy it.

In the US you can take it back too, but you have to bother to go all the way back to the store, stand in line with all the other people returning bad products, be the original purchaser with receipt, have the card it was purchased on, and then get a gift card for the returned value. Although my local is small enough that they know me personally and trust that I am not scamming, so they will let me go grab another off the shelf and do an exchange, but I still need the reciept.

Your scales weighing one under and one over demonstrate the issue quite clearly. For those who clearly don't understand the issue: these are whole tomatoes, to get the exact weight is going to be difficult. You can take them back to the shop to complain, but then you should also complain about the overweight one too.

According to the OP, this is a tube from a phone screen replacement kit. Barely any glue is required for the stated task, the tube is likely standardised, and the tube requires some gas to keep the contents liquid.

Not arguing that it is insane that there is almost no glue in there...BUT, the glue in the photo is "B-7000" which is a cheap knockoff of the actual brand "E-6000" there are several knockoffs like this sold on scam sites like Temu and such, and they are not the same heavy duty adhesive as E-6000. It is a scam from the start.

In my experience those products tend to dry out very quickly once opened and need to be tossed so I'm actually grateful that crazy glue (etc) come in small tubes/amounts like this one and less is wasted. I guess if you used a lot of glue for a hobby it would be different.

I really dislike lies like this. I ate at KFC just last week. First, the chicken was good sized, and certainly not overcooked and dry like this. You must have fished these out of a bag of convenience store chicken that you had on the floor of your car! KFC would never sell something like this! Second, they put a fresh buttermilk biscuit with butter and honey sauce packets in your meal, never a roll! Third, I'm not sure where you found that coleslaw cup, but it looks OLD! KFC puts their sides into a clear plastic container that is much larger than this. So, what do you get out of lying about this kind of thing? You should be ashamed. Businesses are struggling enough right now. Nobody needs this from people that just want attention.

The cookie shown on the right isn't even an Oreo. The underside of the chocolate cookie doesn't even look like that. The representation of the filling is also far too small. While there is a small gap between the filling and the edge, everyone knows that Oreos have more filling than that. The filling is also thicker than shown. This is just some strange attempt to get attention and possible sympathy. People would respond much more positively to you if you told the truth though.

No, that's not honest, and would certainly fail EU packaging regs, it's absolutely a textbook example of misleading labelling, deliberately highlighting the 20% ingredient, also using a non-standard term "CanoVeg Oil" for what actually makes up 80% of it. Very poor, if that confirms to US regulations I'd be very disappointed.

I mean, it does say on the front "CanoVeg Oil & Extra Virgin Olive Oil". Granted, the first part is smaller than the main text, but it is there to see and not just hidden away in the Ingredients list.

Not allowed in the EU: "The reference to olive oils on the label of vegetable oil blends-when outside the list of ingredients, even with images or symbols-is only allowed if: – permitted olive oils (see supra, para. 2) exceed 50 percent of the mixture,"

I haven't noticed a significant change in size and the ones in the last package seemed to fill the package. That said, lately the regular price at my local store is $4.99 for a package of 6. It hasn't been that long since a sale price was frequently 2 for $5.00. There's no way I'm paying more than $3 for a 6 pack.

Genuine question: when the cost of ingredients to make a product goes up, so manufacturers have to cover that additional cost in the price of the product, what's preferred? To change the ingredients to keep the same amount and price point, to keep the price point but make the product smaller, or to keep the size but increase the price to cover the cost?

I weighed a canister of Swiss Miss cocoa because when I opened it, it looked like there wasn't as much as in the previous container. LOL Are those real?? They don't even use pizza dough? Just sold the cheese and peperonni and let people use their own bread!!

Why would a melt be using pizza dough? Having the customer have to provide their own bread and tomato sauce defeats the entire point of a quick convenient meal you can pop in the work microwave.

Contacted Dollar General over some bubble solution for my grandson's bubble machine. The solution, while non-toxic, is packaged VERY similar to the drink pouches he has. Am more concerned with a harried mother quickly grabbing 'a pouch'.

The weight has been cut off the label, it's for the smaller, but there is no label or indication that the larger bottle actually comes from here, and the larger bottle is labelled entirely differently: "chocolate flavoured topping" vs "genuine chocolate flavour". Are they really the same product like they are being presented, because I doubt it.

That's the shelf-stacker who's Fd up, those should not be the same price. The packaging is not misleading, the bigger bottle is... bigger.

The "sugars" part has an asterisk and I bet you it leads to a comment along the lines of "naturally occurring sugars only". Looking up the product, there are no added sugars, there are sweeteners and naturally occurring sugars only, so the zero is probably "zero added sugars".
