Trips to the grocery store can be pretty frustrating for many people these days. If you’re not dealing with a blatant case of sneakflation, you’re faced with misleading product packaging that may make you curse the heavens for the existence of corporate consumerism.
Hyperbole aside, you can also snap photos for the internet to see, much like what these people did. The following images may evoke a mix of laughter, despair, and disappointment – all at the same time.

I don't buy this. The grammar is too poor for it to be packaging for a well known brand.

My Expectations Were Low, But Holy Cow
I don't believe this one. Those crackers would be all over. Not sitting neat.
This is because they use the same packaging for the other varieties they sell, which are bread sticks and crispy tubes.
"contains wheat and dairy. may contain blank space where you expect to encounter product"
I've seen these, and this is not the way they were packaged. The large section is the cheese, small section the crackers. If the crackers were in the larger section, they'd be broken by the time the pack was opened.
Standard Misleading Packaging
Misleading packaging to make the wrap look longer than it is.
Actually, this is the (first) one that's BS: Any natural way of holding them would allow them to slide together and break the illusion of filling both sides of the package to the very end. He had to squish both ends to their respective end of the packaging, flatten his hand horizontally and then balance the package on his hand.

i've seen this many times, for many years, and while it does look like false advertisement, you are still getting an entire sandwich (1).
So many products are doing this these days. Once I know you are doing it, I won't buy your product any more!!
There are several ways companies deceive consumers through their packaging. Researchers from Kiel University in Germany found that it also happens through the color of packages.
According to their findings, products with a lighter color are more likely to be perceived as “healthier” but with “less taste.” This supposed tactic has a significant influence on a consumer’s decision to make a purchase.
Is Anyone Else Bothered By Deceptive Packaging Like This?
I promise the dishonest packaging cost more than the product it replaced. Just a scam to buy more often
It has an amount in gramm or oz written on it. If that is the same with the weight of the cream itself, the company is just stupid, wasting money on the packaging. If not: reach out to the proper authorities in your country.

Single size box for different weight contents. It's a way of saving money by only having to use one size of box, though ofc wasteful in the smaller sizes. The weight will be printed on the box.

This Battery Company Has Started Changing The Packaging To Make You Think You're Getting Two Free Batteries, They Normally Come In An 8 Pack Anyways

Deceptive packaging is a form of false advertising, which is both illegal and unethical. Yet, why do companies resort to this tactic? According to author and entrepreneur Amanda Arthur Krill, competitive pressure tends to push corporations into this direction.
“The long-term repercussions may prove detrimental, eventually resulting in lost credibility and consumer trust,” Krill wrote.

Coffee prices have increased dramatically over the last few years - what cost £5 now costs £7.75. Even the special offers don't drop below £6. I guess they chose to shrink the contents rather than hike the price.
It's wild. Our generic brand cheap coffee has gone from 8$ a bag to 18$ a bag over about 7 years. We've actually started buying a premium brand because it's 20$ for the same size as the "cheap" brand. We tried buying in bulk but it goes stale so fast.
Load More Replies...At least they fixed the packaging to be representative of the contents, but the price.....
The new can is visibly smaller than the old one and probably proportionally so. It's not a packaging scam - it's a price gouge.

This Veet Packaging Designed To Make You Waste Product (And Buy More)
I was using this hair removal cream earlier today, and it stopped dispensing. Tried the usual tricks to get some to pump out, no dice. But it felt too heavy to be actually empty. So, I tried taking the top off, thinking there'd be a little in the bottom I could scoop out and use.
Got it open; it turns out the tube to the pump only goes about halfway down, and the cream is actually in a bag inside. The bag was connected to the opening, so I cut it to get the bag free.
Wait? You couldn’t even unscrew the pump top… had to literally cut through the plastic bottle? That’s ridiculous

It is assumed that shrinkflation is the cause, but with some food items there is a second possibility. With prevalence of nutritional information on the front of packaging, particularly the clear red/amber/green to indicate how healthy something is, I noticed some companies seemed to reduce the stated portion size, instead of altering the recipe, in order to 'make' a portion healthier.

You must have fished these out of a bag of convenience store chicken that you had on the floor of your car! KFC would never sell something like this! Second, they put a fresh buttermilk biscuit with butter and honey sauce packets in your meal, never a roll! Third, I'm not sure where you found that coleslaw cup, but it looks OLD! Bought this from Walmart. I don’t have a weigh scale, and it doesn’t really matter. I’m guessing this really is 1.3 kg, but the powder only filled the container to about 1/4. Absolutely unreal. Oreos As Advertised In Their Commercials vs. What A Modern Oreo Really Looks Like
The last time I bought Oreos, there was less filling than in the left photo, but more than in the right.
I buy and eat far too many Oreos and I've never seen one that didn't have filling almost out to the edge of the wafer.. Personally I like the wafers more than the filing, so since they're sold by weight I'd be fine with the cookies like the one on the right. For those that like the filling you can always buy the double stuff Oreos.
Load More Replies...The cookie shown on the right isn't even an Oreo. The underside of the chocolate cookie doesn't even look like that. The representation of the filling is also far too small. While there is a small gap between the filling and the edge, everyone knows that Oreos have more filling than that. The filling is also thicker than shown. This is just some strange attempt to get attention and possible sympathy. People would respond much more positively to you if you told the truth though.
This happened with some Arnotts biscuits, the ones with the red filling. They asked for a photo of the pack (I sent a photo of the biccy next to the photo on the pack, no sale info). I said "They're ALL like that, all up the east coast" (I checked with family). No reply.

Pasta Sauce Getting 8% Smaller And Water Is Now First Ingredient vs. Tomatoes
Bonus: 450mg of potassium is now 13% of DV!
And since the ingredients are being changed that much, I’m not sure the nutrition facts are now accurate.
This one's not really fair. If they change from a "tomato puree" which contains a lot of water to a "tomato paste" with very little water in it then they need to add the extra water and include it on the label. And the nutrition facts have also changed accordingly
But it does mean lower quality. They're basically now using reconstituted tomato puree (tomato paste plus water). OTOH, they're also using less salt.

No, that's not honest, and would certainly fail EU packaging regs, it's absolutely a textbook example of misleading labelling, deliberately highlighting the 20% ingredient, also using a non-standard term "CanoVeg Oil" for what actually makes up 80% of it. Very poor, if that confirms to US regulations I'd be very disappointed.

We've Officially Entered Dark Times
I think this just happened. Opened pkg of Thomas' English muffins and was shocked to see how they are now unusably small. Looks like they have trimmed 3/8" diameter off them, making the king of breakfast sandwiches undersized for even an egg. Anyone else notice?
AND they're full of air now too. Completely different than they used to be.
I haven't noticed a significant change in size and the ones in the last package seemed to fill the package. That said, lately the regular price at my local store is $4.99 for a package of 6. It hasn't been that long since a sale price was frequently 2 for $5.00. There's no way I'm paying more than $3 for a 6 pack.
And if they held the old size they would need to jack up prices, then there would be complaints about that.

True as this may be, the picture completely fails to show anything misleading, no "advertising as zero sugar" at all. Ingredients: Sugar... is quite clear to anyone that can read.
Still, it's written in a very dodgy way. First it says "0 g" and you have to read the footnote that says "less than 0.5 g." Why didn't it just say so the first time?
Load More Replies...Yeah...one Tic Tac. Just like soda cans had 2 servings. How utterly unrealistic.
This “12 Inch” Pizza I Bought. Two Bacon Bits For Scale. Misleading Packaging At The Very Least
Deceptive Advertising
LOL Are those real?? They don't even use pizza dough? Just sold the cheese and peperonni and let people use their own bread!!
Why would a melt be using pizza dough? Having the customer have to provide their own bread and tomato sauce defeats the entire point of a quick convenient meal you can pop in the work microwave.

Fortunately, they don't sell these where I live. Price and package size would be completely irrelevant.
My 5-Year-Old Grabbed This Dangerous Cleaning Stuff As Soon As I Got Back From The Shops With It Because Of The Child Friendly Packaging
It's the particles that are natural (it's a scouring cream like Ajax).

Contacted Dollar General over some bubble solution for my grandson's bubble machine. The solution, while non-toxic, is packaged VERY similar to the drink pouches he has. Am more concerned with a harried mother quickly grabbing 'a pouch'.
Where's My Candy?
The wild dog that tore open that container probably ate the chocolate.
Sorry, stupid european here: what is this and why should there anything sweet in it? Is this some sort of snack package?
It's called a Lunchables people buy as an on the go lunch or snack and yes, some come with a small brownie/cookie

One bottle says flavour, one says flavor. The bottle caps are different shapes. Something is very fishy here.
Why is one in grams, and the other in Oz and grams? Fishy!
The weight has been cut off the label, it's for the smaller, but there is no label or indication that the larger bottle actually comes from here, and the larger bottle is labelled entirely differently: "chocolate flavoured topping" vs "genuine chocolate flavour". Are they really the same product like they are being presented, because I doubt it.
Do You Want A Zero Protein Diet? Look No Further
The "sugars" part has an asterisk and I bet you it leads to a comment along the lines of "naturally occurring sugars only". Looking up the product, there are no added sugars, there are sweeteners and naturally occurring sugars only, so the zero is probably "zero added sugars".
This Gardening Nutrient Mix That Looks Like Ketchup. It Even Says "Great Flavour"
Riiiight. But you're not going to find them on the same shelf, are you? So where's the problem?
Kim's Choice Potato Corn Dog, 8 Corn Dogs. The Packaging Is Ginormous Compared To The Real One. Seriously?
What in tarnation? I've only known corn dogs to be hot dogs dipped in cornbread bayter and fried. This is not that
Deceptive Packaging: 1kg Coffee And A Tiny Container I Have No Use For
So, you put some of the grounds in the pot to use and freeze the rest to preserve freshness. Doesn't take much to understand the gift style setup of this packaging.
You should not freeze coffee. The moisture in the grounds will cause freezer burn

I do not have a problem with my milk suggesting I use it for cereal and possibly add fruit.
The problem is the use of the, presumably standard, logo for the 5-a-day thing

Everything they do is aimed at finding ways to increase the price of their items without losing customers. The ONLY way to combat this as a consumer is to "resist". For example in the UK all major supermarkets have increased the price of certain meats. If a significant number of customers simply refused to buy minced beef (ground beef) for two weeks the prices would go down and stay down. But the supermarket know that while customers will complain they won't act en masse with buying boycotts and they'll keep coming back.
All of these can be remedied with stricter laws and regulation. And lawsuits. Lots and lots of lawsuits... until they learn their lesson.
All regulations will soon be removed here in the United States of Trump.

With costs increasing there are two choices - put up the price of the products and keep the size the same, or reduce the size of the product and keep the price the same. Putting prices up nearly always puts off consumers, so the only real choice is "shrinkflation" sadly
Sometimes it is both, Higher price and less content. The Last popular Case Here in germany is Milka chocolate. The price is higher now (from 1,79 € to 1,99 €) and the weight is lower now (80 grams instead of 100 grams).
Load More Replies...I don't think people quite get the definition of deceptive. When a company puts less items in a package but it clearly states how many of the product are inside, that is not deception. It's inflation. Either you get less product for the same price, or the same product for more price. Clearly the manufacturers know that a price raise looks worse than taking some product out, but that doesn't make it deception if it is clearly marked.
A lot of these deceptions are justified because the company can say they listed the correct weight. Do we need stricter laws and regulation? Absolutely! My son regularly visits Japan. They have strict laws that require product packaging to accurately reflect the contents, prohibiting any misleading images or representations. Under the Act Against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations, even minor exaggerations in product photos can lead to legal consequences for companies.I suspect there are many countries that do the same, although I can’t name them. Maybe everyone should start returning these products. The people have so much power, but refuse to use it.
But, if I'm not too far off base, Japanese firms typically work on a smaller return. Their boards aren't threatening to behead the CEOs if they don't turn in huge numbers at the end of the year.
