Not everything in life needs to be a grand spectacle. If we keep chasing only the so-called perfect things in life, we might miss out on our surprisingly captivating surroundings. If we look closely, we will find joy in the small, slightly interesting things around us.

And the ‘Mildly Interesting’ subreddit has managed to do just that. The goal of this group, which boasts an amazing 24 million members, is to share pictures that are not exactly 'wow' but somewhere in the middle of being intriguing and boring.

Just honeybees searching for a new home. They don't want to live there; they need more shelter than that plant can provide. They're just taking a break. They're quite docile while they're doing this and as long as they're left undisturbed (which I hope the OP did), they won't bother anyone.

Why are city pigeons here such super minimalist nest builders? Because they are the feral version of the domesticated pigeon. The domestic pigeon was originally bred from the wild rock dove, which naturally inhabits sea-cliffs and mountains. It just takes a few branches to keep the egg from rolling off the cliff and nothing fancy, so city pigeons just stay true to their roots - cliff or car hood, who cares

The bird in the picture is not a “feral version of the domesticated pigeon” (e.g., Columbia livia). It is a mourning dove (Zenaida macroura). All of the species in the Columbidae family build stick nests.

It's a real dilemma, but there's a bright side. Doves are quite flexible in their requirements, and she will find another place -she will and must because she knows she will lay eggs soon. She could be shooed, and the twigs placed in a nearby, visible, and safe place for her to collect and rebuild elsewhere.

As long as they're *at* the house, not *under* the house. I saw an Animal Planet show probably a good 15 years back about a family who unknowingly bought a house located on a garter snake den site. They had hundreds of snakes around the property (and the wife was terrified of snakes), their water was contaminated from the snake's waste, and they couldn't sell the house because of the snakes. They had to declare bankruptcy.

Pretty standard - especially when it comes to sustained release coated dosage forms. That way, e.g. dose dumping can be prevented if one of the smaller units get damaged. However, probably mildly interesting for all the people who have no connections to the pharmaceutical industry.

Say my doctor orders me to take 10 mg of a prescription once a day - I get to the pharmacy and the pill is bright yellow so I can't take it. Then the pharmacy has to call the doctors office and explain and request they send over a new Rx for 1/2 of a 20 mg pill which is white...

Supermarket strawberries as with most of their fruit and veg are bred to look good, be more resilient whilst being transported/increase display time and taste is a less important factor. Looking at you supermarket tomatoes! The varieties of strawberries I grow in my garden taste so much nicer than the supermarket ones. Unfortunately, the slugs agree so it’s mostly supermarket ones for me!

Supermarket fruits are typically harvested green, and ripen in transit. This produces less ripe and less flavorful fruit than what a local grower will provide that ripens 'on the vine'. This of course does not account for off season, when you cannot get local fruit.

It’s a possibility that our drive for creative expression might be stifled in a perfect world. Let’s say you tried your hand at painting, and everything you made was a masterpiece. In this case, you do not feel inspired to draw something new. Many of our creative endeavors are inspired by our imperfections.

If you make something that doesn’t look too good, you are tempted to keep trying. In the process, you sometimes come up with bright new ideas as well.

You fill the holes with "stump killer" to prevent the root system from sending up suckers for years. Na2S2O5 (Sodium metabisulfite) degrades the lignin in the wood ,allowing the stump to break down faster.

Neat!! I guess the different rings of the tree come out different colors. One of the most interesting Forensic Files I ever watched was about when a woman's murder occurred. She was burned and Forensics could determine what year the murder occurred by examining the tree's rings. I was completely hooked on anything crime-related then. And this was before true crime became so popular.

There's a long story/explanation behind it, but "ducking" amongst Wrangler owners is a way to say 'I like your Jeep'. It was started at the beginning of the pandemic by an American woman visiting Canada who received a very nasty note on her Jeep simply because she was an American in Canada. It seems to have slowed down in my area (New England) but every duck I have received has made me happy, and I hope every duck i have given out has brightened the day of whomever I gave to.

Sadly the creator of Duck Duck Jeep passed away June 22. Her name was Allison Parliament. She was actually Canadian with a dual US citizenship, but had been living in Alabama. But because she had US plates, the guy yelled at her and assaulted her for being a "dirty American spreading covid". She was actually planning on using the ducks to prank a friend, but decided to put them on a jeep she saw and liked instead. The owner of the jeep saw her and told her it was a cool idea and she should put it on social media.

    A) the office for price administration was established in WWII, not 107+ years ago. B) putting the citrus juices on there twice is a lazy mistake that probably wouldn't have been tolerated 100+ years ago and C) the use of more than 3 different writing styles and the perfection of the lines and lettering would have been a lot of work for a typesetter for a diner menu. Ima say this is kitch made by the diner to generate a false nostalgia.

A 'ceiling price' is a government made price limit, to make sure that the business isn't charging too much money for its goods. So like a ceiling is as high as you can go in a room, the ceiling price is the highest amount of money they can charge.

Eh as an American I'm not offended. There's really no way to show a quintessential American garden since the geography and climate varies so much across the country. I'd rather a bunch of Germans get their jollies at making fun of us in this way than see an entire museum of American style gardens.

I agree with you. When ones entire country is about the size of West Virginia, a relatively small state, they can't really comprehend. To get angry at the lack of comprehension that generated the Berlin garden 'theme', would be as futile as becoming angry at a baby for not understanding quantum physics. And for LA, yep, close to spot on. Ive lived near there. 😅

Perfection can also lead to monotony. Imagine scrolling through only impeccable-looking photos that lack character and personality. Without goofiness, flaws, and emotions, a photo can be quite boring and unfulfilling. That is why it’s important that we appreciate even the mildly interesting things around us.

Additionally, if we aim for perfection all the time, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves. We should accept the fact that not everything we do will be top-notch. Sometimes we might fail completely, or we might make a lot of mistakes. The important thing is to enjoy ourselves in the process and learn from our shortcomings.

Not just humans. I know the same is true for cattle, and probably most, if not all, mammals. The milk produced immediately after birth contains antibodies to kickstart the baby's immune system (it's called colostrum). They disappear from the milk after a short time.

The yellow coloured milk is colostrum-the first type of breast milk produced after birth. It's very high in antibodies, immunoglobulins, anti-inflammatory substances, and enzymes of different types. It's also mildly laxative, and helps the baby get rid of meconium (that very sticky dark-green goop that forms the baby's first few bowel movements).

    arthbach

1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

The first milk, colostrum, is yellow due to it having a high amount of Vitamin A. It's also high in protein and low in fat. This makes it very easy for the newborn to digest. As the baby grows, the composition of the milk changes to meet their needs.

Oh its the colostrum that makes it so yellow. We used to always freeze some from the cows in case a sick calf needed extra or if mammy cow wasn't able onto produce enough. My sister was shocked when she had her first kid that she had yellow milk! As a farmers kid we laughed at her shock a lot!

Colostrum is the first form of breastmilk that is released by the mammary glands after giving birth. It's nutrient-dense and high in antibodies and antioxidants to build a newborn baby's immune system. It changes to breast milk within two to four days after your baby is born.

Human milk also changes from morning to night. Thicker and richer in the morning and thinner in the afternoon, also tastes like sweetened condensed milk (my older kids wanted to see what their brother was tasting).

My former employer spent lots of money putting in battery operated auto flush toilets, battery operated soap dispensers and battery operated motion activated paper towel dispensers. They never replaced the batteries in a timely manner. I would guess some lackey got sold a "money saving" ruse that didn't factor in the cost and time of battery replacement when you've got over 500 employees using the facilities. Of course, hardwiring in the stuff was deemed too expensive. All they saw was the potential savings in water, soap and paper towels.

i used to work for a major pharmaceutical company and in the building i was in, no manufacturing just administration and the call center, each floor had a small breakroom with a couple of microwaves, a coffee machine, and a couple of small tablers. and then on the ground floor by the cafeteria there was a room with 5 big fridges, a big upright freezer, 2 toasters, and 8 microwaves but the seating area was around the corner and on the other side of the cafeteria (no seating in the room with all the microwaves). i can see this being something they might have done since i left.

Why do women have to be responsible for contraception? This brochure should include vasectomy rates

There have been trials into male hormonal contraceptive pills, but these were stopped because of side-effects. The side effects were mood changes, skin changes, weight gain. Basically the same side effects that many women get with hormonal contraceptives, but we're told "what do you expect? You want contraception, so put up with side effects"

Proud that we were making contraceptives free for women in Canada. Sad because the conservatives are going to take over next year, and they'll be cutting this program. They'll also be cutting national pharmacare, dentistry, and going after LGBTQ+ rights. If you're young please vote! They are going to cut so many programs just as the economy rebounds.

There are some doctors who won't refer a woman for sterilisation unless they are a certain age, or if you don't have children already. A younger woman gets told "you might change your mind, what if you meet a man who wants children?" A man you've never met has more control over your ovaries than you do.

Woman here, contraception is the responsibility of BOTH (or more) people who are having sex. I would suggest you combine coil with condom for optimum cover.

I guess many men don't wear the condon right from the start of penetration, but put it on when they think that they will reach their climax soon. However, some sperm can be there much earlier.

I used IUD for many years, it is a wonderful device. Truly "set it, and forget it". Hubby changed his mind about kids AFTER we were married (I was floored) so I made him get fixed. Told him I wasn't going to take birth control for the rest of my life because HE didn't want kids. I told him if he got hit by a bus I would remarry, and have kids so I would not be the one to get fixed. He got a reversible vasectomy in case he changed his mind. I loved him but was extremely hurt/pissed, so no vasectomy, no sex. He got it pretty quick.

One of my family's previous cats suddenly became obsessed with a particular corner of my dad's bag that he took to work. Rolled and rubbed her face all over it. He had to lint-roll the bag every morning before work. Finally he realized that he'd been keeping mint gum in that pocket, and the cat was getting a mild high from the smell of the gum.

The pressure from the tape pushed some of the bruising away from the surface, making it appear to "heal" faster. In reality the fastest way to resolve a bruise is sunshine because it breaks down the blood. Fresh bruises also need ice because it reduces the size by slowing blood flow leaking into the area.

Go to the Dr. ASAP. Noticed mine were a few years ago and found out I have a cyst in the pineal gland of my brain. Neuro has been monitoring it with MRI'S for years and it's not growing or getting any smaller. Assures me nothing needs to be done unless it grows. Also told me that a lot of people have them and go through their whole life not knowing. They are only found when an autopsy is performed. Good luck.

While you're not wrong, this is very, very, vey far down the list of big contributors of plastic waste. Polyester fast fashion and disposables are where the problem truly is, not in plastic items that are used over and over again. The microplastics from this are negligable compared to the fast amount of plastic waste coming from items that are disposable, badly made, surplus, and unnecessary in the first place.

Sigh, these comments. It says "interfaith", meaning it was intended to be used by anyone (Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, etc etc, even atheists. My family and I spent about 2 hours in the chapel at our local hospital after my mom passed away, none of us are Christian, most of my family, including me, are atheist or non-religious), but the BP echo chamber auto-defaults to "Christians bad, reeeeeeee!!!"

If you change them out often enough, probably not. They usually don't get crumbly for a while. My family has a housecleaning service and we go through a LOT of erasers at the office, so I'm pretty familiar with these cheap little pencil-cap erasers XD After a while, they do "dry out" (or something) and get crumbly/rip if you put them onto a pencil, but I'd hope this bar changes them out frequently.

I have unusual skin differences too, but mine are symmetrical overall. The upper side of my lower arms, the front of my shins, and most of my face have an entirely different skin type from the rest of me. They have a different hair color (and density) from the rest of my skin, a different texture/pattern, different coloration, the works. It's because they're from a second DNA type, that of my fraternal twin that I absorbed in the womb.

To what end? Those blades are probably 75+ years old. DNA technology doesn't go back nearly that far. The house we lived in that had one of those was built in 1949-1950 and I would imagine that any blades back there would be of that age.
