Every country has something that people associate it with the most. For Italy, it's probably espresso and pasta. When we think about Australia, snakes making their way into your living room probably pop up in our minds. The U.S., in its own right, reminds us of the stereotypes about fast food.

But what connotations does Canada evoke? Polite people and universal healthcare? Freezing winters and hockey? We'd hate to reduce any country to such simplicity, so we've collected some images that might paint a picture from all sides: its people, its nature, and just general awesomeness that happens only in Canada.

Same (though not “native”, just born and raised in NJ, so “feral” is more appropriate 😆). I’m supporting everyone who’s willing to stand up and say, “You aren’t ‘Number 1’ just because you’re too uneducated to count all the way to two. So don’t cut Sesame Street because too many of you still desperately need it.” 😂

I'm doing this a lot currently. We have North, Central, and South America. Calling us U.S. citizens, narrows the blame to us, which is correct. I think that Orange did us all a favor by renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America because it is. Of course, it's your choice, Mexico or America, it's the same body of water.

"South Canadian" here. I studied a couple of years at UBC in Vancouver. After moving into the room I'd rented, I was taking a walkabout to find out what was where. At a nearby busy four-lane thoroughfare I had stopped on the sidewalk at mid block to glance up and down. Drivers in both directions stopped to let me cross (!), which of course I felt obligated to do even though it wasn't my intent.

A little over 40 million people live in Canada, and in 2024, it still ranked 15th in the World Happiness Report. Although that's pretty good, it's a slip two places down from last year. For young people, however, life doesn't seem to be so good, as Canada placed 58th in the happiness ranking for people under 30.

Older people, however, think that living in Canada is the bee's knees, as in the category of happiness of those 60 years and older, Canada was in 8th place. Still, Canada ranks high among other countries in metrics such as racial equality and quality of life, as in 2023, The U.S. News placed Canada 2nd among 87 countries for racial equality and 3rd for quality of life.

These are amazing. Vehicle collisions with wildlife, especially deer and moose cost so much that it affects insurance rates in some provinces. But we've found that if we build just a few dozen of these per province, we can reduce those collisions (and save thousands of animals) by almost 90%. Making them very cost effective

Life in Canada is pretty good. And how can it be bad when there are so many unique things to appreciate? If you thought that Canada was "just America, but colder," you probably need to think again. Canada has some things that make it pretty unique, so let's go over some of them, shall we?

First, the amazing nature of Canada. Banff National Park is one of the most famous nature spots in all of Canada. With its turquoise glacier-fed Lake Louise, the park offers skiing, hiking, canoeing, yoga, and other recreational activities all year round. While many people opt for Niagara Falls or go see the Aurora Borealis in Manitoba, Banff is an almost out-of-this-world beautiful place that offers much more.

Canada is famous for making maple syrup, but did you know that more than 80% of the world's syrup is made in Canada? What's more, 90% of Canadian maple syrup comes from the province of Quebec alone.

The Quebecois have a unique dish they make with maple syrup, called "pouding chômeur," which translates to "unemployment pudding." It's simply biscuit dough poached in maple syrup caramel, and it originated during the Great Depression when people were looking to make something sweet with limited resources.

Hockey is not just a sport for Canadians; it's one of their biggest sources of pride. Canada has 23 Olympic medals in men's hockey, 14 of which are gold. Women have won four consecutive gold Olympic medals in 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014, then won again in 2022. The other side of the Canadian $5 bill even has kids playing hockey on it!

Also keep in mind that throughout history, the one thing you can always count on is the pendulum swinging. Granted, the US could some serious bipolar meds, but when the pendulum swings so wildly to one side, the laws of physics promise it will do the equal and opposite motion in return. Maybe if we got rid of this ridiculous two-party oligarchy, we could try having a country run on moderate common sense

You're assuming Trump/MAGA/Trumpians (as opposed to traditional Republicans) allow for elections. Fortunately, Trump is old enough he might not live for his whole term. If he did I would not be surprised if he declared martial law and suspended elections - "just until they can be fair and accurate" (like in Russia)

If you've ever had Hershey's chocolate in Canada, you'd notice that it tastes a bit different than it does in America. Canadians have reformulated Hershey's chocolate so that it tastes smoother and sweeter. The American version is more cheesy in flavor because, according to Hershey's senior chocolate specialist Gina Shroy, Americans like it that way.

"Canadian chocolate is higher in fat, and it is a larger particle size, but Americans tend to gravitate towards a little bit more of a grittier or even cheesier flavor," she explained.

Had clients who hated the crows in their brand new neighborhood. Thing is, the hundred or so crows lived there first, before the fancy housing development. In Portland Oregon, there is a bike path along a creek that crosses a busy road. The traffic jam one day was a mother duck and ducklings using the bicycle cross walk. Traffic jammed up in both directions. Nice to see our neighbors careful of the geese and goslings.

I am also Australian and even though I have been 'to' the snow I don't think Mt Donna Buang (probably the smallest Mt that gets snow in Victoria) counts. I had also never seen it actually actively snowing, so I was astounded when I was in a tiny town in Canada (Golden) and got to experience it for the first time.

Just passed 20 years since immigration in January 2005. I recall my first time driving through the Rockies, the most used word was “wow!”… still is. I still get (obnoxiously, according to my Canadian friends) excited for the first winter snowfall; though I confess it lasts less time than it used to. Sort of melts away after each shovelling session.

You can have all the snow you want. I don't want it anymore. I dealt with it for 65 years. Yes, it can be beautiful and if you are young and have energy to enjoy it, good for you. But when you get older, you don't want to drive in it any longer or want to shovel it anymore either.

When we think of fortified cities, many old European towns probably come to mind. However, Canada has its own walled city, Quebec. It's the only fortified city north of Mexico City in North America that has proper walls all around. It's not medieval, like, say, Dubrovnik, but it has its own charm, with horses and carriages passing by from time to time.

    Urban Owl In Vancouver, BC

An owl perched on a metal pole near a chain-link fence at night, representing Just Canada Things.

My boyfriend always gets fooled by those fake owls on buildings so when he was walking to 7-Eleven for a midnight snack he had to take a double-take when he saw this fella. Perched right on the intersection of two main roads, wasn't bothered by us walking by or by the cars. People walked by and didn't even notice it! The owl turned its head to watch them walk by but they couldn't be the wiser. I was surprised to see it sitting so close to the sidewalk. There's some enormous rats living in that "community garden" and the alleyway, so I assume it was hunting. I have no idea what kind of owl it is, I was thinking barred, but it doesn't look quite the same?

My grandpa once found an owl sitting on a backyard tree. He was told to shoo it off but he didn't agree because he thought about what fate the owl may come to since these are rare here. He visited him since that day every day, till my grandpa died. The owl was punctual; he'd be at the same branch every night by 10 pm.

I looked at the Reddit thread, because I was curious - you'd have to be 109 years old to reach 600 blood donations in Canada so I figured there was plasma or bone marrow in there too. He says: "I’ve been donating blood plasma at Canadian Blood Services. Since it isn’t whole blood, I’m allowed to go once a week (that’s the Canadian Blood Services rules)." Either way, super impressive!

84 days for a woman in Canada - roughly every 3 months, so yeah, 4 times a year. But for men it's 56 days - eight weeks, so 6.5 times per year. That would still be 92 years, plus minimum age is 17, and he's clearly not 109 years old. So it must include plasma or bone marrow donations. (PS. If you're wondering, the male/female discrepancy is because women have lower iron levels and it takes longer to replenish the iron.)

Lastly, let's tackle the Canadian weather. Those who've never been there think that Canada is probably always cold, icy, and snowy. And while winters can get brutal in the most northern cities, it's not winter all year round. In Toronto, it gets up to 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) during summer. In Vancouver, the temperatures don't drop below freezing even during winter, and summers get as hot as 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius).

For those who are confused as what's going on, this is the day after a rain or snow melt, when the temperature rises one day and freezes overnight, so by morning there is ice everywhere. It's very dangerous to drive and walk anywhere. "Black ice" is all over. That is ice that is so clear and smooth it looks like there's nothing there until you step on it and instantly fall on your a*s. This is the best thing to do on a day you'll be likely excused from going to school if it's open, unless the schools decided to be kind and close. Still a bit dangerous because you never know if some idiot decided it's good idea to drive on roads like that.

Expecting this tomorrow. Two inches of snow last night, +3C today so it’s melting rivulets down the road but unlikely all the snow will melt. Gonna be -5C overnight, freezing the runoff to thin sheets of ice and black ice. Still, looking on the bright side, only three more months of winter in Alberta.

US vertical red-yellow-green (red on top) is fine until you have additional lights; turn lanes (one near me is solid or blinking green or yellow). not sure how to shape those though - maybe single arrow for yellow "caution" and double arrow for green?

Apple cider here refers to a more raw, unfiltered pressing, and you can get mulled (with cinnamon and other spices/ingredients). You can also get carbonated (sparkling), and hard (alcoholic). Apple drink means it is so low quality it doesn't meet even a minimum purity to qualify as proper juice I've tried No Name apple drink once. Tastes watered down and not much like real apple juice.

People will literally tell you if you dropped anything, even if it's not anything worthy, like a receipt or expired bus transfer. I saw a couple ladies tell a girl she "forgot" a plastic bag that wasn't hers. It's not a bad thing, though. A driver honked at me to alert me my earphones were dragging on the ground hanging out of my pocket. That's how observant Canadians are, and oblivious I can be.

I love that it says cash only. There has been an ad in Australia for a while where a troll stops people at a bridge and they say they don't have cash so the troll pulls out a card reader.

I was so sad that I couldn't have any poutine when I was in Canada :( but I was already having stomach issues and I didn't trust there wouldn't be gluten. My sister tried it and didn't like it!

Very easy to make. Fry your french fries, or bake them in the oven. Make your gravy, preferably beef kind and bring it to a boil. Gets some cheese curds. Layer up fries and cheese curds in a bowl and pour on the gravy. Make sure it's hot enough to melt the curds. You'll have to wait a few minutes for it to be cool enough to eat.

A Canadian expat living in the Netherlands (who I know...) is still searching for cheese curds. Doesn't seem to exist, also not in Belgium.

There are literally about 40 of them outside my window in the US at this very moment. I have the screen door open a bit and can hear them. I live on a lake so they're always around.

So... about that. Kraft has manufacturing locations in Canada. Kraft Heinz has major locations in Dartmouth, NS, Mont-Royal, QC, Vancouver, BC, and Toronto, ON. These locations are part of a company decision to quote "support domestic production in Canada, by Canadians, for Canadian markets." So... you're actually hurting Canadians.
