Every country has something that people associate it with the most. For Italy, it's probably espresso and pasta. When we think about Australia, snakes making their way into your living room probably pop up in our minds. The U.S., in its own right, reminds us of the stereotypes about fast food.
But what connotations does Canada evoke? Polite people and universal healthcare? Freezing winters and hockey? We'd hate to reduce any country to such simplicity, so we've collected some images that might paint a picture from all sides: its people, its nature, and just general awesomeness that happens only in Canada.

How Companies Are Advertising In Canada These Days
I'm American (and I can say that without pretense as I am an American Indian) and Canada, I will support you 100% in ANYTHING you would like to do to reciprocate the stupidity that has been forced upon you.
Same (though not “native”, just born and raised in NJ, so “feral” is more appropriate 😆). I’m supporting everyone who’s willing to stand up and say, “You aren’t ‘Number 1’ just because you’re too uneducated to count all the way to two. So don’t cut Sesame Street because too many of you still desperately need it.” 😂

It’s like apologizing for the drunk racist uncle who pisses on himself at every family function, and yet the family still keeps inviting him while pulling straws as to who has to follow him around with the mop and bucket THIS time 🤦🏻♀️
Load More Replies...Canada should not let the USA use the name of the continent as substitute for their country. Canadians are Americans, too. Just use U.S. instead of America.
I'm doing this a lot currently. We have North, Central, and South America. Calling us U.S. citizens, narrows the blame to us, which is correct. I think that Orange did us all a favor by renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America because it is. Of course, it's your choice, Mexico or America, it's the same body of water.
Load More Replies...LOL. Yeah. I've been seeing some in billboards like this in Winnipeg, too.
As an American, I want to apologize and remind everyone that half the country did not vote for this. Please don't hold this against all of us! Please?
We mostly hold it against the people that didn't vote at all. And of course the 1/3 who voted for Trump & Co.

In Canada, A Bus Driver Saw A Young Boy On The Street Crying. He Couldn't Ride His Bike Because The Chain Had Come Off. The Driver Stopped The Bus, Got Out, And Fixed It On The Spot
When I first visited a friend in Vancouver, BC, CA someone heard me ask the bus driver how to get to an address, she got off the bus and walked me to the address then went back and caught the next bus
"South Canadian" here. I studied a couple of years at UBC in Vancouver. After moving into the room I'd rented, I was taking a walkabout to find out what was where. At a nearby busy four-lane thoroughfare I had stopped on the sidewalk at mid block to glance up and down. Drivers in both directions stopped to let me cross (!), which of course I felt obligated to do even though it wasn't my intent.
Load More Replies...Not every bus driver is like this. He must have had some time to stop. But I have come across some very helpful, friendly bus drivers.
Good man! I was fortunate enough to be able to help a young girl in a similar way about 45 years ago as cconcrete truck driver.
This is just kindness which so many seem to be lacking these days 😔❤️
Crying gets you everything. Teach a person to fish... Parents, equip your children!
Reminds me of my dad's uncle. When he was a bus driver, he wold get out of the bus to help, if he saw someone needing help 😄

A little over 40 million people live in Canada, and in 2024, it still ranked 15th in the World Happiness Report. Although that's pretty good, it's a slip two places down from last year. For young people, however, life doesn't seem to be so good, as Canada placed 58th in the happiness ranking for people under 30.
Older people, however, think that living in Canada is the bee's knees, as in the category of happiness of those 60 years and older, Canada was in 8th place. Still, Canada ranks high among other countries in metrics such as racial equality and quality of life, as in 2023, The U.S. News placed Canada 2nd among 87 countries for racial equality and 3rd for quality of life.
“Americano” Is Now “Canadiano” At This Coffee Shop
I mean, it would be a good substitute for sugar or honey, so I support this idea.

The Canadiano coffee has been around for years and years. An Americano is a shot of espresso topped up with hot water. A Canadiano is a shot (or dbl shot) of espresso topped up with strong coffee.

"A Wildlife Overpass" In Banff National Park Of Canada
These are amazing. Vehicle collisions with wildlife, especially deer and moose cost so much that it affects insurance rates in some provinces. But we've found that if we build just a few dozen of these per province, we can reduce those collisions (and save thousands of animals) by almost 90%. Making them very cost effective
Yeah, I've had to stop and wait for moose on the outskirts of Banff, so glad the highways have these bridges to keep them away from traffic.

Life in Canada is pretty good. And how can it be bad when there are so many unique things to appreciate? If you thought that Canada was "just America, but colder," you probably need to think again. Canada has some things that make it pretty unique, so let's go over some of them, shall we?
First, the amazing nature of Canada. Banff National Park is one of the most famous nature spots in all of Canada. With its turquoise glacier-fed Lake Louise, the park offers skiing, hiking, canoeing, yoga, and other recreational activities all year round. While many people opt for Niagara Falls or go see the Aurora Borealis in Manitoba, Banff is an almost out-of-this-world beautiful place that offers much more.

Canada is famous for making maple syrup, but did you know that more than 80% of the world's syrup is made in Canada? What's more, 90% of Canadian maple syrup comes from the province of Quebec alone.
The Quebecois have a unique dish they make with maple syrup, called "pouding chômeur," which translates to "unemployment pudding." It's simply biscuit dough poached in maple syrup caramel, and it originated during the Great Depression when people were looking to make something sweet with limited resources.

Hockey is not just a sport for Canadians; it's one of their biggest sources of pride. Canada has 23 Olympic medals in men's hockey, 14 of which are gold. It’s That Time Of Year Again
It's maple taffy. You boil maple syrup down until it’s thickened, then pour it onto snow, wait for it to set and roll it up to eat. Very very sweet, but very tasty. It’s popular in the francophone community.
I think we just had Festival Du Voyager. It's a popular treat at that time. So good.
Your snow must be a lot cleaner than our snow. We've got so much c**p and pollution in our snow, I'd be wary of making a snow angel, much less eating it.
There was the most beautiful apple orchard in the town I grew up in, with a sugar shack in the back. They made maple syrup candies and treats on the premises... my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

I know someone who hates crows so much, she makes a spectacle and claps her hands dramatically when she's around them. Her theory is it scares them away. It doesn't. She just looks like a weirdo walking down the street.
Had clients who hated the crows in their brand new neighborhood. Thing is, the hundred or so crows lived there first, before the fancy housing development. The humans tried all sorts of means to get rid of them, but that only emboldened the crows to wreak more havoc. Put a smile on my face every time I was there.
See a crow? Be nice to it. Befriend it. Crows are amazing birds. It is good to be a friend of the crow.

I am also Australian and even though I have been 'to' the snow I don't think Mt Donna Buang (probably the smallest Mt that gets snow in Victoria) counts. I had also never seen it actually actively snowing, so I was astounded when I was in a tiny town in Canada (Golden) and got to experience it for the first time.
I grew up in the tropics and I still get ridiculously over excited about snow.

You can have all the snow you want. I don't want it anymore. I dealt with it for 65 years. Yes, it can be beautiful and if you are young and have energy to enjoy it, good for you. But when you get older, you don't want to drive in it any longer or want to shovel it anymore either.

When we think of fortified cities, many old European towns probably come to mind. However, Canada has its own walled city, Quebec. It's not medieval, like, say, Dubrovnik, but it has its own charm, with horses and carriages passing by from time to time.
Urban Owl In Vancouver, BC
My boyfriend always gets fooled by those fake owls on buildings so when he was walking to 7-Eleven for a midnight snack he had to take a double-take when he saw this fella. Perched right on the intersection of two main roads, wasn't bothered by us walking by or by the cars. People walked by and didn't even notice it! The owl turned its head to watch them walk by but they couldn't be the wiser. I was surprised to see it sitting so close to the sidewalk. There's some enormous rats living in that "community garden" and the alleyway, so I assume it was hunting. I have no idea what kind of owl it is, I was thinking barred, but it doesn't look quite the same?
My grandpa once found an owl sitting on a backyard tree. He was told to shoo it off but he didn't agree because he thought about what fate the owl may come to since these are rare here. He visited him since that day every day, till my grandpa died. The owl was punctual; he'd be at the same branch every night by 10 pm.
The owl is nice, but the photograph is outstanding. Is your BF a photographer? Don't tell me that was taken on your phone.
Boston has several types of owls and hawks, but not enough because we still have a nasty rat problem.
People Leaving Cans Outside So The Homeless Don’t Have To Dig Through The Garbage For Them. I Love Canada
We do the same in Berlin, the cans and bottles cam be brought in for a refund
Common in Norway, too. Some trash cans even have separate holders on the side for empty cans and bottles.
Not in America. Here we lock up the trash cans so the homeless can't get them. God forbid we make it a tiny bit easier on our victims of capitalism. 🥺

I Completed My 600th Donation At Canadian Blood Services
We used to go donate blood sometimes with our friend group. I was really bummed that I couldn't donate, because one of my meds prevents that. My bestie always tested, but mostly had too low hemoglobin count to donate either. So we were there just as a moral support. (Also, they were always incredible nice and said that moral supports are just as important as those who donate.)
I looked at the Reddit thread, because I was curious - you'd have to be 109 years old to reach 600 blood donations in Canada so I figured there was plasma or bone marrow in there too. He says: "I’ve been donating blood plasma at Canadian Blood Services. Since it isn’t whole blood, I’m allowed to go once a week (that’s the Canadian Blood Services rules)." Either way, super impressive!
In my country we can donate only 3 or 4 times a year. It would take a lot of time to donate this amount here.
84 days for a woman in Canada - roughly every 3 months, so yeah, 4 times a year. But for men it's 56 days - eight weeks, so 6.5 times per year. That would still be 92 years, plus minimum age is 17, and he's clearly not 109 years old. So it must include plasma or bone marrow donations. (PS. If you're wondering, the male/female discrepancy is because women have lower iron levels and it takes longer to replenish the iron.)

Lastly, let's tackle the Canadian weather. Those who've never been there think that Canada is probably always cold, icy, and snowy. And while winters can get brutal in the most northern cities, it's not winter all year round. In Toronto, it gets up to 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) during summer. In Vancouver, the temperatures don't drop below freezing even during winter, and summers get as hot as 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius).

Never Been More Proud To Be Canadian
For those who are confused as what's going on, this is the day after a rain or snow melt, when the temperature rises one day and freezes overnight, so by morning there is ice everywhere. It's very dangerous to drive and walk anywhere. "Black ice" is all over. That is ice that is so clear and smooth it looks like there's nothing there until you step on it and instantly fall on your a*s. This is the best thing to do on a day you'll be likely excused from going to school if it's open, unless the schools decided to be kind and close. Still a bit dangerous because you never know if some idiot decided it's good idea to drive on roads like that.
Expecting this tomorrow. Two inches of snow last night, +3C today so it’s melting rivulets down the road but unlikely all the snow will melt. Gonna be -5C overnight, freezing the runoff to thin sheets of ice and black ice. Still, looking on the bright side, only three more months of winter in Alberta.

Traffic Lights In Prince Edward Island In Canada Are Different Shapes For Color Blind People
Well, now, ... as long as they are vertical, not really necessary.
Load More Replies...In the U.K. lights are vertical. Top is always stop, bottom is always go. Colours are irrelevant really.
In the US, almost all the traffic lights have the red on top and the green on bottom. There is one traffic light that has the green on top and the red on bottom.
US vertical red-yellow-green (red on top) is fine until you have additional lights; turn lanes (one near me is solid or blinking green or yellow). not sure how to shape those though - maybe single arrow for yellow "caution" and double arrow for green?
My uncle is red/green color blind. But red is always on top or on the left, green is bottom or right. So this isn't needed.
Are you in the US? If so, there is one traffic light that has the green on top and the red on bottom?

The movie "Repo Man" has a scene where a kid grabs a can from the fridge and it reads 'food'
I assume it doesn't have enough apple to be called juice. We have to label them as fruit drink instead of juice if it doesn't meet the required percentage in Australia .
"The word "juice" can only appear in the common name if the product contains a minimum of 25% of the named juice(s)" "When "juice" is in the common name, the percentage of each named juice or the total amount for all named juices must be clearly displayed on the principal display panel. "

I have fond memories of when a Swedish grocery chain had a similar line of products that were white with blue text. They were so popular they eventually added some stuff that where not groceries, like white tees that said "t-shirt" and simple coffemugs with the text "mug" on them.
If you want to know more about Canadian food label laws: https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/c.r.c.,_c._870/page-23.html
It used to be great, unfortunately the company making it became a giant conglomerate that bought up 2/3 of the grocery stores in the country. Every 5 years or so Loblaws gets investigated for price fixing and gouging the s**t out of Canadians
They're not the only ones who do that. Save On Foods, Sobes, all bad for food prices.
Load More Replies...We used to have "no name" here in Washington, but it was white with black letters.
Don't know why you were downvoted. I remember this too from the late 80s, northeast US. Most grocery stores carried this as a generic "brand" which evolved into the private label brands of today.
Load More Replies...In Canada, juice means 100% from the fruit only. If not 100%, it cannot be identified as juice.
Apple cider here refers to a more raw, unfiltered pressing, and you can get mulled (with cinnamon and other spices/ingredients). You can also get carbonated (sparkling), and hard (alcoholic). Apple drink means it is so low quality it doesn't meet even a minimum purity to qualify as proper juice I've tried No Name apple drink once. Tastes watered down and not much like real apple juice.

America used to do this...for not for profit work. They made it hard but at least they did it. But that's probably over.
I spent my life working as a counselor at non-profit substance abuse facilities, and America just kept piling on the interest for my loans despite monthly payments.
As an American, neither I (cosigner) or my daughters (borrowers) are on board with loan forgiveness. What we DO want, and I have tried to convince my GOP Rep of this, is a less usurious interest rate. Currently 12.5%. Just taking interest to no more than a mortgage rate would be huge.
If you believe that rates are too high, you should be in favor of loan forgiveness for all the people trapped in usurious rates.

Safe To Say, I’m Glad I Live In Canada
People will literally tell you if you dropped anything, even if it's not anything worthy, like a receipt or expired bus transfer. I saw a couple ladies tell a girl she "forgot" a plastic bag that wasn't hers. It's not a bad thing, though. A driver honked at me to alert me my earphones were dragging on the ground hanging out of my pocket. That's how observant Canadians are, and oblivious I can be.
I (in the UK) chased an old lady through the supermarket once because I heard a ping of something falling on the ground. She’d lost a button on her top. I was glad I did because I imagine she would have been embarrassed if she was walking around with her top opened up.

Very easy to make. Fry your french fries, or bake them in the oven. Make your gravy, preferably beef kind and bring it to a boil. Gets some cheese curds. Layer up fries and cheese curds in a bowl and pour on the gravy. Make sure it's hot enough to melt the curds. You'll have to wait a few minutes for it to be cool enough to eat.
