Abandoned chateau in the forest
Hey, it's not abandoned, it's for sale! Gofundme for BPs first official holiday retreat? https://www.chateau.cz/en/zamek-horin-prodej/
It's in Staryi Solotvyn, Ukraine. And this webpage on the village has other buildings that look just as intriguing: https://travels.in.ua/en-US/locality/18417/staryi-solotvyn-village
An abandoned amusement park left behind in Japan
Abandoned theme part in Nagasaki, Japan. Here's video: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=823833848353261
For some, old and abandoned locations are sort of like driving past a car crash, most of us will at least look, but for some, it’s a fascination. Generally, the things we see are representations of when everything goes right. Abandoned and broken things are the fail state, something less commonly found out there.
It’s a unique opportunity to see the effects of time, from peeling and decaying paint, to the impact of nature on man-made structures. Some folks are fascinated by the eeriness of the structures, or perhaps like documenting the signs of human day-to-day life before the entire place was left alone.
An abandoned estate left behind in Poland
Another one purportedly for sale. From the witcher reddit: "Finlay44: For those interested in the backstory: The Zobeltitz Manor, located in Glinka, Poland. Built in the late 18th century as a home for a noble family. Renovated in the early 20th century. Unfortunately, the owners fled during that little scuffle those wacky Nazis started in the 1930s, and didn't feel like coming back once the Reds took over. The mansion and its grounds became state property and, since no one in government had any interest in the place, fell into disrepair. It's actually for sale. If you're interested, contact the Agricultural Property Agency in Warsaw."
The enchanting and abandoned castle Sammezzano. A masterpiece of oriental architecture in the heart of Tuscany, Italy
The interior is even more amazing: https://www.homeinitaly.com/magazine/post.php?post_id=176
After all, when someone says they are into urban exploration, we tend to understand that as investigating old, mostly unused buildings, not just walking around a city. While some part of urban exploration is just a desire for adrenaline, as these locations are generally closed for a reason, it is still very human to want to discover something new and unseen.
Interesting: "Scola Tower, also called the Tower of San Giovanni Battista, is a military structure located in the Gulf of La Spezia (The Gulf of Poets) in Liguria, Italy. The tower sits north of the island of Palmaria in Porto Venere." https://hardcoreitalians.blog/2022/05/23/hidden-gems-in-italy-scola-tower/
This one's even spookier than it looks: from Abandoned Beauties on Facebook, May 6, 2022: "Lennox hospital, Glasgow. Lennox Castle was built in the 1830s and later converted into what would become an infamous psychiatric hospital. The hospital had 1200 beds and has been compared to American Horror Story: Asylum, due to the allegations of abuse, neglect and horrific conditions. Lennox Castle Hospital finally closed in 2002 leaving the institution’s sad history to be forgotten. In 2008 a fire destroyed most of the building, leaving it as you see today."
This beautiful castle somewhere in Italy is abandoned for several years. There are many ghost stories were the local people are talking about but the previous owner lived here happily until he died of old age. This dining room was my favorite room of this amazing castle
Lucky the locals are obviously law abiding. So many treasures in that cabinet.

It's in Indiana, in the US, part of the estate that Coca Cola built: "This two story pool was part of a house that used to belong to William Root who made the Coca-Cola bottles for Coke... “Rocky Edge,” the estate is south of Terre Haute, Indiana. It has been purchased for renovation. photo by @chicago_jenn" https://www.reddit.com/r/AbandonedSpace/comments/zyuorj/this_two_story_pool_was_part_of_a_house_that_used/

Caerlaverock Castle is a moated triangular castle first built in the 13th century. It is located on the southern coast of Scotland
This is Caerlaverock Castle, in Scotland (Castle Road End, Dumfries, DG1 4RU). If you visit in July, 2024, don't miss the two days of jousting.
Abandoned Villa Du Satyre in Italy
Why are so many of these in Italy, was there A big event causing these to be abandoned
The remains of an old villa from the 13-14th century left behind in Italy
Because this one doesn't look like a haunted mansion at all. 👻😧
An old villa left behind in Italy
I was just there in October - this isn't a villa, this is part of a mill complex smack in the middle of Sorrento, Italy. Walk down main street, and there's a bridge, not over a train line, but over this cleft in the earth. Very surreal. It's a flour mill from the 13th century and a saw mill. When they built that central square in Sorrento, the Piazza Tasso, this very low lying area was cut off and then abandoned. But super weird to be strolling down the busy tourist-filled street from the main square, look over a railing, and this is down below you. The photo is taken looking over the railing from the busy main street.
I think this one is Forte Richermo, in Pieve di Teco, Liguria, Italy. They're bunker forts in the Italian Alps, and there's definitely more than one in this style. Some you can enter and tour (the gap between the walkway and door is covered for access by a drawbridge in the doorway).
War planes left behind in a field
The ones in front look like Antonov AN-2s so this must be former Soviet territory. Can't make out the insignia on the side though. Those look like Mig-15s behind them and after that, I'm not sure. I can't make them out.
An old American diner with everything left behind
I sometimes (more often than not) think these photos are staged. This photo implies that the diner abruptly closed in the middle of a lunch or dinner rush. But...the table settings are too perfect, especially on the bar/counter.
autumn colors in an abandoned monastery
This could have happened in China, but it happened in Turkey. More than five hundred nearly-indentical castles appear to be copied and pasted into this Turkish hillside but not a soul lives there. Developers meant for these uniform villas to be luxury vacation homes for healthy tourists when they began construction in 2014. However, when the company went bankrupt in 2018, investitors pulled out of the deal which put constuction on hold.
Abandoned presidents busts that stand 20+ feet tall. These president heads started as an attraction called Presidents Park in Williamsburg, Virginia. The park was an open-air museum where people strolled among the heads, gazing at the enormous size of them. But a lack of visitors caused the park to close just six years after opening in 2004. Instead of allowing the busts to be demolished, Howard Hankins, who helped construct the park, claimed all 42 heads and lugged them back to his private family farm for safekeeping until someone could think of what to do with them. With each bust weighing 22,000 pounds, it took nearly a week to move them all just a few miles to the large field where they now sit, and some of the heads sustained minor damage to the backs of their heads and noses. You’ll find every president here today (excluding Obama, Trump, and Biden) on his farm rotting away exposed to the elements of nature
Hashima Island (端島) is an abandoned island of Nagasaki, lying about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the center of the city. It is one of 505 uninhabited islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. The island's most notable features are its abandoned concrete buildings, undisturbed except by nature, and the surrounding sea wall
A foggy morning at an abandoned overgrown amusement park in Japan
This one's in Osaka. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/kejonuma-leisure-land
The view inside the beautiful orangery of a big manor house, in France. It was owned by a wealthy family who ran a masonry business. It’s incredible to see how nature finds a way inside
An abandoned Volkswagen collection rotting away in the woods in America
This one isn't actually abandoned. This is simply a houseboat with a roof garden, but as it's the fall or winter, the garden appears to be dead. It's on the River Main, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. See here for summer photos: https://www.alamy.com/houseboat-with-roof-garden-on-the-southern-shore-of-the-river-main-frankfurt-am-main-germany-image185753247.html
you see this a lot in Maryland. They are mostly old steam ships that got abandoned. they make good fishing spots.
Exploring an abandoned western themed amusement park left behind on top of a mountain in the eastern United States
Ironically, when this thing was operating, it was called Ghost Town in the Sky. Gotta be careful what karma you bring when you're naming your brand new amusement parks.
At one time this old Victorian mansion from the 1880s was a local family’s pride and joy. Their Buick Centurion 455 convertible still sits out front and a pair of matching Impalas nearby in the yard. Sadly, the mansion and cars are now covered in graffiti and completely trashed. When explorers don’t share locations, this is one reason why. It’s too hard for people to appreciate the beauty and history of a place without destroying it
An abandoned house in the woods in Virginia, USA
There are so many beautiful and run down old farm houses in the woods throught northeast Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and western North Carolina.
Originally constructed in 1580, this almost 500 year old estate has been left behind for centuries in Italy. Filled with some of the most beautiful frescoes I’ve seen, this first room stuck out to me the most
This is Villa Cosulich, in Trieste, Italy. Apparently, it's smack in the middle of a nice public park with gardens, and the gardens even have areas for kids. But the building is obviously done for. Another shame - not enough tax dollars to keep it up. In fairness, though, you can't walk a step in Italy without tripping over 2,000 year old stuff, so a villa that was built way after Jesus might have visited isn't going to be high on their preservation list. I can't imagine what Italy's preservation budget runs.
Inserted at the gates of Lisbon, at the Cabeço de Montachique and next to the highway A8 west of the past holds the Albergaria Grandella Sanatorium. It is an inheritance left by the Makavenkos Club, a society represented by great personalities of the twentieth century, such as the commercial Francisco Grandella, known for having built the Grandella warehouses in Chiado and the architect Rosenso de Carvalheira
Sanatorio Albergaria Grandella, in Portugal. Not a castle, it was meant to be a sanitarium for tuberculosis, and while the construction was started in 1919, it was abandoned before it was finished.
This one's Fort Central du col de Tende, or Fort Central on the French-Italian border in the Alps. And admission is free! You can apparently ski here in winter from the nearby Limonetto ski area.
An abandoned villa in Italy named after an Italian poet and philosopher
An abandoned house in America from the 1960’s with everything left behind. I wish I could find out more history about this one,the artist told me he found it rotting away on the side of a road in the New England area. This house looks almost like a time capsule from the 60’s with all the pictures, and furniture left behind. You can see in the images above that the family left behind medicine, beds, pictures, suitcases, and even an old school TV
Man comes. Man destroys. Man leaves. Nature takes over
La Puerta del Sol, an abandoned hotel in Alassio, Italy. Someone on Facebook commented they visited about 12 years ago and had a great time. Sad.
More spooky Scotland. Dunalastair House was abandoned around WWI because there wasn't staff available anymore to run it.
Another abandoned theme park in Japan. It's supposedly in Nagasaki Holland Village, but per Trip Advisor, Holland Village is still open, so. . .
The wonderful Hunting Palace in the park of the castle of Chignolo Po. It was built in the Baroque style in the 18th century, and it was mainly used for parties and banquets
An old chateau left behind in France
So many châteaux, churches, monasteries and chapels that it's impossible to preserve them all. The villages and small towns they're in do their best, but without grants from the state it's hard. And some are private properties that just aren't maintained any longer.
A piano shaped theater that’s been left behind in Asia
As of 2023, the Piano House doesn't appear to be abandoned. It's owned by Huainan City and they sometimes have outdoor events. Trip Advisor currently has it as the #1 of 25 things to do in Huainan, and doesn't mention it being closed or abandoned.
An old villa from the 18th century left behind in Italy
A trip to a past time. This old villa felt like something out of a fairytale when we stepped into this room. It was completely dark inside at first, but when we illuminated it with our phone light, I realized what we had found. We managed to open the window revealing the original furniture, and some beautiful frescos. You don’t see bedding or architecture like this now days, it had almost a royal feel to it
I think this is another house for sale, this time I believe it's San Giovanni D'Asso, in Montalcino, Tuscany. A photographer posted a photo of this room and others, along with the front of the building (https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=1962208170646521&set=pcb.1962208540646484). This building for sale is that building. If you're looking for a fixer upper with a bit of a commute, here's the link to the real estate website: https://www.abodeitaly.com/property/7e9/it/tuscany/montalcino/castelletto/house/20-bedrooms
When I first saw pictures of this place, I thought it was an old castle. I recently came to find out that it’s actually a deserted green house that was part of an estate left behind in the Italian countryside. Watching the bright colors of the sun sink below the horizon here was one of my favorite memories from this trip
Six flags New Orleans is an abandoned amusement park in Louisiana, USA. When hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, it devastated the entire city of New Orleans. This amusement park in particular was left submerged in water for weeks. When the water receded, it left the entire park past the point of repair. 17 years later you’ll find everything left behind, and an abundance of wild life roaming the park. In the end, nature always wins
Crazy. You'd think salvaging it for souvenirs for old cutomers, and just scrap- would be worth a lot of money. Less every year... and "New Orleans" - you realize- is gone. Not ever coming back to what it was; and only shrinking from here. There are bull sharks living full time now in Lake Pontchartrain.
The Flying Dutchman at Disney's Castaway Cay from the Pirate's of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest.
An overgrown staircase at an abandoned farmhouse in Portugal
Definitely NOT a farmhouse. Here's a video of the interior (and get a load of those ceilings): https://www.facebook.com/reel/2616061485225268
Sunset at a small theater in a derelict state somewhere in Europe
Winter garden in Krym Health Resort (Crimea in Ukraine). The resort got great reviews until the recent change put it under new management (of the entire region). Now, not so great.
Underwater museum in Aqaba
Some posts claim this is Ukraine, but the photo appears to be by a photographer based in Kyoto, Japan. So my guess is it's also in Japan. Photographer says it's on private property and they had permission from the owner to photograph.
An old Buick left behind in the woods somewhere in Maryland
The rear end of that Buick seems in strangely good condition for something that's been abandoned in a forest for decades.
A small castle left behind in the woods somewhere in Italy
This villa was hidden among the farm lands in Italy. After looking around for a while, we navigated our way around the property and managed to find an open door. As we walked in we were greeted with these beautiful frescoes, and some of the most beautiful artwork I’ve seen while exploring abandoned places. I could’ve shot this room all day
Ghost town at sundown. You’ll find this old ghost town deep in the Nevada Desert just a few hours outside of Vegas
People keep making "Fallout" comments, but this is the first that makes me think of it.
Mausoleul Csávossy, Romania. Some video of the story and interior views: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_eVVFcSFoc They still ring the bells here.
Grand Hotel Wildbad (Bagni, or thermal baths), in Innichen, Italy. Once attracted aristocrats, now attracts sheep. (Or goats, let the debates begin. But I think sheep.) Abandoned gradually during and after WWI. Proving again, wars aren't good business for holiday venues.
Hemmoor Kreidesee, Germany. It's an old limestone cement quarry that was abandoned and turned into a scuba diving venue. So it's a real truck, on a real road, that turned into a really deep lake when they turned off the water pumps at the end of the quarry's life. To keep things interesting for divers, there's also apparently some cars, Alan Shephard's Piper airplane, and other features. They were all put here to make the dives interesting.

Nice and fascinating! But I'd like more information about every location: Where can I find it? How old is it? When and why was it abandoned?
Taken from Deserted Places instagram feed. They provide very little information sadly, you have to rely on comments to get any information, mostly people don’t comment with anything useful ☹️ https://www.instagram.com/deserted.placess?igsh=MTRqZTVic21ud2xuMA==
Load More Replies...Understood about not giving away the location but a decription of what a lot of these are would be nice without having to reverse Googling 100 or so images. Some really neat and beautiful stuff here.
I would love to live in or restore some of these - just glorious .....
I've created an App to list ALL the abandoned places in the world: download "Abandoned World"
Special thanks to all the pandas who provided more information about each of the photos.
Am I the only one that thinks that so many of these places could be restored and house so many people in need. There are so many war refugees living in camps, homeless people on the streets, orphanages filled to the brim,... These places could be given a second life while giving those people a second chance as well.
The cost to make them habitable would be far greater than any new build, and the running costs colossal. Not to mention that they're mostly in bad locations with no infrastructure, no jobs, no opportunities... There's a reason they're all abandoned.
