Well maybe if the kid didn't lie to his mother she would have trusted him? Some kids deserve trust, others still need to earn it.

Na bruh, I lost my cat the other week and felt physically ill from worry when he didn't come back for days. The worry of not knowing where he was or if he was safe was awful. I would 100% want to know where my kid is when he grows up.

I'm with you. There's knowing where your kids are, then there's spying. My sister is having this problem with her 18 year old daughter. She lies to her, because my sister invades her privacy. She tracks her phone, reads her diary, searches her room. The girl has had 2 pregnancy scares. Now, I'm not saying I'm a better mother, but when I wanted to know where my kids were, I'd call them. If they weren't where they were supposed to be, they usually would tell me. I gave them trust. If they broke it, there were consequences. It is completely about trust. You need to start with small things, and they'll trust you and tell you where they are. If you show you don't trust them, they'll lie every time, and that's a problem.

You can have an extremely trusting relationship with your kid, & still check in on em sometimes. In fact, as parents, we're supposed to do just that. They're gonna do things they're not supposed to. That's what kids do, they push their boundaries. A parent's job to keep em safe, keep em in line, & teach em right from wrong. So there's nothing wrong with checking in on em once in a while. Especially if you have a good feeling, as parents often do, that they're not doing as they're supposed to. That doesn't mean constant surveillance (and nothing about this post suggested the it was. Just because she tracked her kid's phone once, doesn't mean she does it constantly). It doesn't mean taking his independence or snooping through his stuff or invading his privacy. But checking on him? All parents do that. Besides, we don't know the whole story. This is just 1 little tweet. OP's son could giving her trouble, that made her feel this was necessary You don't know. Chill out, dude.

It's not stalking if you are trying to keep track of YOUR OWN child. It's called responsible parenting...

When my uncle was 18 back in the '50s, he called my grandpa from the high school football game to tell him he and his bandmates were headed home. When they didn't arrive in the normal driving time frame, my grandpa went looking. Found my uncle and his friend's in the car they had driven to the game, wrecked to oblivion by a drunk driver on the wrong side of the road. My uncle died 3 days later from the horrific head trauma he'd suffered. A tracking app would have been nice back then

We're NOT their friend! Tracking is any parent's greatest tool. Use it! Trust comes later- when they earn it as adults. During the teen years keep "track" of them, it's your job. Teenagers are not known for making good choices. I've raised three amazing young women who had fun, active teenage years. They needed me to be their Mom, not their buddy.

Pretty sure childhood development books all say that fostering a sense of independence, especially in teenagers, leads to more well adjusted and independent adults.

No, it's how you make sure your family is safe. I know it may be hard, but just imagine if we were all chipped at birth just like animals are. No more lost kids, sex trafficking would be much harder, grandpa wandering off because of dementia wouldn't be a problem. Would we give up some freedom, yes. But it would also help ensure some safety. You could also lower murder rates because you'd know when and where everyone is.

Not when it's your kid. Not tracking them makes someone a neglectful parent

Yeah like any kid would leave their phone behind.

And this is how kids start lying to their parents. I like the saying from above "trust, but verify". If I checked up on my kids, I did it by calling, not surveilling them. Be up front. Are you at X's house? If they say yes and you feel like they're lying, simply go there. Then confront your kid, and give them some consequences. But don't play games. That teaches them nothing.
