If you've ever owned a cat, you know that there's a wide array of sounds that a feline can make. Some research shows that cats have about 21 different types of vocalizations, while others claim that it's 12. People on the Internet even go as far as to say that cats can vocalize in over a hundred different ways.
But most people can recognize the one sound that instantly identifies a cat, even if they've never owned one. And that is, of course, meowing. A cat meme Instagram page named itself in honor of the mighty sound, "Meow Is Life." And Bored Panda presents you with the most compelling pics from the page to enjoy together with your meowing companion.

We like to think of meowing as "cat talk." Essentially, dogs talk by barking and cats talk by meowing, and that's essentially what we're taught even as little kids. But just because the sound comes out of their mouths like it does with words for humans doesn't mean that it's talking, per se.
In fact, animals vocalize when they want to communicate with humans. Cats in particular don't communicate with each other through meowing, purring, or any other sounds. One exception is kittens: they do meow to let their mother know they want more milk or purr to get her to lie still while they're suckling. Aside from that, meows are a way for cats to talk to us humans.
Cats only communicate with other cats (namely, their mothers) in infancy. After that, they adapt that behavior in adulthood to "talking" to humans. John Bradshaw, author of "Cat Sense: How the New Feline Science Can Make You a Better Friend to Your Pet," explained to NPR that cats don't express emotions with either purring or meowing.
"Signals like the purr, because it is a signal, it's giving out a message, and it's trying to get you to do something, and they don't evolve just to convey emotions, not in the animal world, anyway." Cats will vocalize when they're happy, distressed, or want something. "But again," Bradshaw notes, "it's a signal to the animals, the people around them to pay attention and try and help them."
We, humans, speak in many different languages and a variety of different accents. Even the same English language sounds different in varying parts of the U.S. We'll get even more distinct pronunciations in the UK, New Zealand, or Australia, let alone in India or Jamaica.
Interestingly, cats might also have "accents." Scientists theorize that cats adopt certain phonetic features of their "meows" in accordance with what their owners react to. Depending on where the cat lives, that might mean that a cat from Texas meows very differently than a posh cat from Kensington.
But you are now Rudy's human. Acceptance is the only easy solution.
Those who research cat meows already know that domestic cats have a bigger variety of meows and purrs than their wild cat cousins. Thus, they theorize that domestication and human interaction change the way cats vocalize. After all, they have to adapt to us, humans, to understand them. If their owner uses long vowels in their language, they might automatically respond more to similar sounds from their owner.
In 2016, a Swedish researcher from Lund University, Susanne Schötz, began exploring the differences in melody and sound in cat communication. She is looking at cats from two opposite regions in Sweden, the north and the south, to see if their owners' distinct dialects will transfer to the cats as well.
"Many cats and their human companions seem to develop a pidgin language in order to communicate better," Schötz told National Geographic in 2016. "We don't know whether there are similarities in the languages or whether they're specific to a cat/human pair."
"Maybe certain breeds will use certain melodies, or cats living in countries where human speech has certain melodic patterns will vocalize differently. If we can find that cats adopt these melodies, we may be able to help cat owners interpret these signals better."
I bought my cat her own heating pad because she kept stealing mine, problem solved.
What about your cats, Pandas? Have you ever noticed that they respond to one accent more than the other? Perhaps the next time I travel, I myself will listen to whether the cats there have a different cadence to their meows – I suggest you try to experiment, too! In the meantime, check out our other posts bursting with laugh-out-loud funny cat memes here, here, and here!
The size of those pupils say a hiss and perhaps a swat are comin' XD
One of my tuxedo boys fetches as well XD His favorite items are those sparkly little poofballs or Nerf darts! I bought a bag of 50 darts just for him XD
"Man, I'm glad you're here, I walked in and bam, I didn't even know what hit me, everything was all over the floor"
"Wait, so you mean I can eat all I want and it'll be zero calories....Sharon....we need to go to the supermarket"
I'd hear the rumble of the start up run in the hall followed by the ominous silence which was her flying through the air to take a short cut across the bed to the window. Unfortunately the landing area on the bed was me and a delicate part of my anatomy. I (usually) managed to protect myself... Thanks to Cthulu she's grown out of it. :-)
HE LITERALLY LOOKS LIKE A JUMPING SPIDER HOLY although jumping spiders are friends so this is actually amazing :D
I wonder how many people actually know what that phrase means anymore
Dog in my case , n not even one of mine ,but one of the little foster dogs as sleeps in my room with our corso , where i am she is , where as the other one is with the stuffy in my daughters room ,
So, my tuxedo boy (Preacher) who lives with my ex.. when I go over there 3 days a week to feed him his dinner (ex is taking his dad to dialysis), we have to separate his food out to two portions and moisten it because he's an inhale-feeder and will hork it all right back out if he eats his full portion at a time (and yes, we even have a slow feeder, lol.) I give him half of his food and wait 10ish minutes to make sure he isn't going to regurgitate it all back out, all the while he is screaming at me to give him his second portion XD After a few, I'll give him his second half and wait another 10ish minutes. Sometimes he'll scream at me when he's done with the second half as if he thinks he can trick me into giving him his second portion... again XD No thirdsies, Preacher!
Oh my goodness, years ago my old gray girl (who loved wearing clothing/costumes) had a pair of little socks I'd put on her sometimes. MISSED OPPORTUNITY that I never got a matching pair to go along with hers! D:
The shape/structure of his mouth really throws me off. I've never seen a cat that looks like this, but after a quick search I learned this cat is named Ollie.
Aww, just like my dino offspring who likes to lie splat on top of me
General PSA: turmeric isn't highly toxic to cats, but in large doses (such as a cat licking vast amounts of it off of its fur...) it can cause diarrhea, vomiting, or liver issues. Best to not coat your entire cat in turmeric XD
That's us getting a pill down our sick kitty (who is on the mend). >^.,.^<
Owner needs put his/her cat on a diet. How does that cat even walk?
My main reason for enjoying cat memes is that gazing at beauty relieves my stress and makes me feel calm.
Accompanying pic is Binnaz. She took up residence at my barber's shop just after the beginning of winter and has been living and cared for there ever since. I finally got a picture of her today. Her name "Binnaz" means something like "1,000 whims". It refers to the act of being coy, playful, or difficult in a way that is intended to be endearing or to test someone’s devotion. Her clipped right ear is an indication that she's been spayed, probably by the municipality but some private individuals and groups pay to have strays neutered as well.
