75 Expensive Mistakes People Made That Might Make You Say “Ouch” Just Looking At Them (New Pics)
We’re all human, and we all make mistakes. It’s what we tell ourselves when things go wrong, and for the most part, it’s true. But here’s the thing: not every slip-up is created equal. Breaking a plate during dinner is unfortunate. Backing your car through the garage door? That’s going to sting a lot more. Both are accidents, sure, but the consequences couldn’t be more different.
Below, we’ve gathered a collection of painfully expensive mistakes people have shared online, the kind that make you wince and instinctively check your bank account just looking at them. Scroll down to see the photos, and maybe send some sympathy to the folks behind them. They could definitely use some.

Meet Bonnie, Our 3-Month-Old Collie. During The Night She Discovered A Can Of Blue Paint With A Loose Lid
We call this her 'blue period' since she is obviously going through some artistic phase. The Chinese rug cost nearly $6,000.
It looks just like a horrid rug my parents had in the 80s and 90s (they have terrible taste in decor).
Load More Replies...Enigmatic names to the rescue! Get a frame, cut out the most interesting blue piece, add the right name and this is art worth millions! How about "Portrait of Bonnie Blue Under Blacklight"?
I would DIY the rug with the same blue paint as a stain and wash it out with the pressure washer outside or have the professionals rinse the excess paint out leaving the blue stain behind. Would be much more pretty.
Can you imagine how many tiny pots of paint would be needed to dye that whole rug?? It's really not worth shelling out hundreds of dollars, not to mention all the time and effort, to - if you're lucky and it works - end up with an ugly blue rug instead of an ugly beige rug.

This happened at my husbands previous job the day after he quit over safety concerns. Guys were showing up high and drunk, management didn't care, and sure enough one of them knocked the sprinkler pipe putting something on a shelf on a rack and the whole thing let go. Expensive mistake considering they were warned repeatedly by staff that there were issues.
Sometimes the simplest errors turn into the most expensive lessons. When it comes to famous blunders, few can match the scale of what happened to France’s national railway company in 2014. SNCF ordered 2,000 new trains worth billions, only to discover they were too wide for over 1,000 of the country’s train platforms.
The company had measured newer stations but neglected platforms built more than 50 years ago. The error forced them to spend an additional 50 million euros widening 1,300 platforms over two years, turning what should have been a triumph of modernization into an expensive reminder to double-check your measurements.

Scored $320 Of Lumber For $90. Now I Get To Pay $500 For A New Windshield
Follow me for more money saving tips.
I honestly thought that everyone else that this happened to just wasn’t being careful enough. Send the judgement. I deserve it.
I've done it, except it was the windshield that popped. I'd been using an 8' length of ABS pipe to bring bundles of rebar home and the bare pipe fit in the car for the drive into town. Then one day I had the bright idea of adding an ABS collar to each end to make them stronger, which used up 1/2" of the 1/4" safety margin I'd been working with. "SLAM-CRACK-'CK-ME!"
We've moved arcade parts in my Kia Optima and the back seat of our F-10 (some have sharp edges or are brittle plastic from the 80's/90's), we put extra EV foam pads around the ends near the sides of the car and rear windows to protect the arcade parts as well as the interior of the vehicle.
In London, a skyscraper became famous for melting cars. The building at 20 Fenchurch Street, nicknamed the Walkie Talkie, created an unexpected problem during its construction in 2013.
Its concave glass facade acted like a giant magnifying glass, focusing sunlight onto the street below with such intensity that it warped car panels and melted plastic parts. One Jaguar owner found his side mirror and bodywork damaged after parking nearby for just an hour.
The phenomenon earned the building a new nickname: the Walkie Scorchie. Developers eventually installed a permanent sunshade at a cost of around £10 million to fix the problem.

Do Not Park On The Beach
I love that word, it's not used as much as it should be.
Load More Replies...I would prob not *think* about tides, cause of sweden and only lakes around. But then in the first place, I would never park on any Sand near water, prob not even sand far from water either!
Load More Replies...About five years ago my family spent the weekend in a house on the beach. We didn't know there was a big festival going on, with much alcohol involved. On Saturday evening the tide was out, and people were driving, and parking, on the sand. When we woke up on Sunday morning we could see a half dozen or so vehicles that had been left parked there, but now were in water up past the axles, and that was just what we could see from the house we were staying in. Who knows how many there were on the whole beach.
Why do people keep doing this? My parents live on the Outer Banks and every year a car gets totaled by salt water.
NASA experienced one of the most frustrating mistakes in space exploration history in 1999. The Mars Climate Orbiter, which cost $125 million to build, was lost because of a simple measurement mix-up.
Engineers at Lockheed Martin used imperial units while NASA’s team used metric units. Nobody caught the discrepancy until it was too late. The spacecraft missed its intended orbit and burned up in the Martian atmosphere. The entire mission vanished because it got lost in translation of mathematical language.
Car At The Bottom Is Flooded. Car At The Top Has Been Totalled
Due to the flooding, water got into the mechanism and short-circuited it. It raised the platform, and this was the result.
These never seemed like a good idea in the first place. Too easy for something to go wrong.

Load More Replies...The business world has seen its share of spectacular misjudgments. In the early 1990s, Quaker Oats bought Snapple for $1.7 billion, convinced it would dominate the beverage market. The acquisition turned into a disaster, and just three years later, Quaker Oats sold Snapple for only $300 million.
The loss was staggering, made even more painful by the fact that Snapple continued to thrive as an independent brand after the sale. Sometimes the best business decision is recognizing when a partnership simply isn’t working.

I'm going to have to find a plum orchard now on a rainy day to see what that smells like.

Load More Replies...This is sad, BUT, somaliers are literally the most bs profession. They are constantly fooled by cheap wines in blind tests and, given taste is subjective, serve absolutely no purpose. Anyone knows to pair white wine with fish, red with steak, etc. It's not that hard to pick one that pairs well
I had an older brother who was a wine aficionado. Even after being unemployed for a year, completely broke, he was putting hundred dollar bottles of wine on his credit card.

Residential Homes Built In South Dakota Over Undisclosed Abandoned Gypsum Mine... Sinkhole Renders Entire Neighborhood’s Property Values Now Worthless
The operative word is "undisclosed". Whoever did the "undisclosure" has to pay.
If the company still exists. Popular fraud trick is to incorporate and sell property like this then dissolve the LLC and reform as a new entity. Makes it nearly impossible to hold them accountable and the homeowners are SOL.
Load More Replies...Great for hide and seek though. Just make sure you are found before they fill the sink hole back up.
or to get out *before* the next sinkhole buries you!
Load More Replies...I would guess that being in South Dakota is what renders it worthless. 🙃
Spain faced an engineering nightmare that sounds almost impossible to believe. Designers working on the Isaac Peral class submarine made a decimal point error in their calculations, making the vessel 100 tons heavier than planned.
The mistake meant the submarine would sink to the ocean floor and never resurface. Engineers caught the error before construction began and redesigned the submarine to be longer, but then discovered it was too large to fit into the port where it was being built. The cascading errors turned what should have been a routine military project into a costly lesson in precision.

Load More Replies...Delicate Evening Operation On The A4 Highway At The Valmy Rest Area. A Heavy Truck Transporting Utility Vehicles Crashes Under The Canopy Of A Gas Station
Honestly that's kind of impressive! How do you even make that happen??
Short answer: idiocy (or at least absent mindedness) at work. Long answer: I'm guessing the truck - apparently a two tier car transporter, so the trailer and its load of vans was even taller than the driver's cabin - was too tall to fit under the gas station roof. The truck got stuck and the edge or the roof wedged with the rear end of the first van on the trailer.
Load More Replies...Sydney Harbour Bridge used to be the only way to get from the north to the south of Sydney (and vice versa). Way back in the olden days it had toll booths that had height limitations (you can see where this is going). Every now and then a big truck would think that they could make it, rather than going the long way around over the bridge about 10km-ish to the west without height restrictions. They would get jammed in the toll gates and create hours and hours of chaos. Ahh, those were the days.
We had a storm in Australia (Gold Coast) on Christmas Day that destroyed a crane, basically bending it in half. It took four more cranes to dismantle it.
Got Gucci Sunglasses For My Wife. Dog Ate Them Before She Had A Chance To Wear Them
Ordered for Valentine’s Day. Shipping was delayed. Got them yesterday. Had them for 2 hours before finding them like this in the dog’s bed. My fault, though. I set them on the floor at the top of the stairs so wife wouldn’t forget them when she went out.
This neighborhood is seriously going do the dogs *tsk tsk tsk*
Load More Replies...Next time, don't spend a lot on sunglasses while buying store-brand dog food.
Well did you give the dog a pair? If not, then there’s your problem. The doggie probably wants a pair of Gucci sunglasses too!
Mine are prescription - they are an awful lot more than $5 - though I did some quite a bit cheaper when I bought a pair of normal glasses.
Load More Replies...At least he admits it was his mistake and didn't really blame the dog.
Cultural attachment can be stronger than taste test data, as Coca-Cola learned in 1985. After conducting nearly 200,000 blind taste tests showing consumers preferred a sweeter formula, the company replaced its 99-year-old recipe with New Coke.
The backlash was immediate and intense. Protest groups formed across America, consumers stockpiled the original formula, and the company received up to 8,000 complaint calls per day. One person even wrote to the CEO addressing him as “Chief Dodo.”
Just 79 days later, Coca-Cola brought back the original formula as Coca-Cola Classic, having discovered that some things matter more to people than taste.

Trading errors can happen in the blink of an eye with devastating results. In 2005, a stockbroker at Mizuho Securities in Japan made a typing mistake that cost the company around $225 million. Instead of selling one share at 610,000 yen, he accidentally offered 610,000 shares at 1 yen each.
Investors immediately jumped on the incredible deal, buying up the drastically underpriced stock before anyone could stop the trade. Even with stock exchange rules limiting some of the damage, the typo became one of the most expensive keystrokes in financial history.

Home recording is so easy these day. More practical to set up the recording equipment at home instead of moving a piano to the studio.
The entertainment industry isn’t immune to costly mistakes either. When reshoots were needed for the 2017 film Justice League, Warner Bros faced an unusual problem. Actor Henry Cavill had grown a mustache for another role and couldn’t shave it off.
The studio ended up spending around $25 million to digitally remove the mustache from every scene featuring Superman. The extensive visual effects work became a notorious example of how small scheduling conflicts can balloon into massive budget overruns when production timelines collide.

$65,000 Medication... Most Expensive Thing I Have Ever Had To Throw Away
The patient didn’t show up for their appointment. Once mixed, it expires in less than 24 hours. No one else was scheduled for it, unfortunately.
We currently don’t have mixing capability at our location. We have to mix it at a different location and have it delivered on the day of the appointment. 1st time this had happened with such an expensive medication.
Prob cost $20.00. But they charge the patient $65 grand. Like everything else in America.
Actually, 65K is probably the actual cost but government funded health care would cover the cost. The NHS often makes a decision not to provide certain drügs due to cost but as patients we never have to pay... beyond NI tax, which funds the NHS.
Load More Replies...It's Ocrelizumab according to the OP, here in the UK it's £19,000/treatment, usually done every 6 months. Taxes pay for it if you're being treated via the NHS, it's not cheap at all.

These stories remind us that mistakes happen at every level, from individual people to massive corporations. The scale might be different from dropping your phone or denting your bumper, but the fundamental lesson stays the same. We’re all capable of errors, and sometimes the most expensive ones come from the simplest oversights.
The best we can do is learn from these cautionary tales, double-check our work, and hope that when we inevitably mess up, the consequences are a bit more forgiving.

Took This On My Way To Work, Guy Forgot To Secure His Boat To His Trailer And Stomped On The Breaks To Stop
It's a real time-saver when you wreck the boat before you even get it all the way to the water.
This is why I always put those two rear end straps in the driver side footwell. There are a lot of things happening when you pull boat out of the water and that one is easy to forget.
Paint Store Guy Didn't Close The Can Properly
Bought a car one week ago, more expensive than I could really afford but so beautiful. Picked up paint while on vacation to paint my mom's house. Teenager working at paint store apparently didn't close the can properly. That's 1 gallon of slightly greenish gray wall paint on the floor of my new car. Paint store guy's response was to apologize profusely, give me another gallon of paint, and throw in a free tub of miracle wipes. Lovely.
I love how it's the paint guy's fault. It's your car, your paint, and your responsibility to ensure everything is secured for transit.
I mean, it's your responsibility to secure anything you load in your vehicle. Why isnt it in the boot? Why didn't they check the lid? Why didnt they wrap a bag round it? Why in the hell is it some poor kid earning minimum wage fault? And how in the hell did they think one single tin is enough to paint a house? That's not even enough for 1 wall!
Not sure what more you expected this poor kid to do. Did you expect him to come outside and clean your car for you? Grow up.

I turned the oven on to preheat it. 3 min later I removed the oven tray to put it into the kitchen island so I could line it with cookie dough. Absolutely Shattered
I have a friend who took a job at a place that distributed large plate glass windows for stores. This was before tempered glass was required by law for any and all public facing windows. On his first day at the job the floor supervisor told him, "If you're ever handling a large plate and you lose control of it, LET IT GO and move away from it as fast as you can. Do not try to save it. You're replacing an employee who tried to save the glass, and was cut in half, bone and all. We can replace the glass, but we can't give you your life back." My friend left that job at the end of the day because he couldn't get the visual image out of his mind.

Shower Door Spontaneously Shattered Behind Me
That happened to the rear window of my car once. I slammed the door and a million little pieces of glass fell inside the back seat. It sounded like ice shattering.
Something similar happened to me on a job: Staying at the Watergate Hotel, opened the shower door...the entire door came away in my hand. Got upgraded to a suite, pretty d**n quick.

He's just used an angle grinder for that. No proper sharpening.
Guy Who Mows My Lawn Somehow Did This While Mowing
That happened to us too once. The lawn service accidentally ran over a rock and it got catapulted right through the dining room window. They paid to get it replaced.
did they have to pay or was it you "who had not cleared debree of lawn"?
Load More Replies...That's what happens when you don't pay attention to the direction of your discharge chute.
As the actress said to the bishop....
Load More Replies...That happened to my car. The local high school’s maintenance guys ran over a penny with their mower and it shattered my passenger window. I came home to a garbage bag over the window and an apologetic note instructing me to call the school so they could pay for the damage.
I Was About To Go To Bed
op "I used my dust pan to squeegee(?) it into a bunch of paper towels and tossed them in a trash bag, with my child's help_ The majority of it is cleaned, but I have a lot of details I have to deal with tomorrow_" (_ replaced to not get hidden)
What was the liquid - washing or toilet cleaning? Makes a difference to what it could do to the flooring.
My Friend Went To The Apple Store Today Because He Broke Both The Front And Back Of His iPhone XS
They told him that because of Corona, the repair service was temporarily closed. He then chose to buy the 11 Pro, which he then dropped when opening the box.
Don't get me wrong, I have an iPhone (seriously considering going back to a dumb phone though) but it's "old" and was not bought new. I don't understand the need to run out and buy a brand new one each time a model is released.
Load More Replies...Or they are closed because they got a case of Corona and got drunk! 🤣🤣

I just got a great new job, so I replaced it with a newer (not new) refurb for $200. It works perfectly well. I honestly don't need the latest and greatest, and, given that my cats seem to like to (try to) break my phones, I'll stick with the cheap ones. And I'm never buying any Apple product.
Cat Jumped Off The Samsung Serif TV And It Fell. Replacing The Frame Costs $1500
I’ve got one of these! It comes with legs, which is the only reason I bought it.
I Dropped My AirPods
I bought a cord to use with my airpods in situations where I worry they may be lost. It works great and has a magnet to keep it together around my neck if I want to take them off for just a few moments.

It was actually not in frame, It was in a snow pile on the left side, I had to ask my neighbor to turn off his snow blower for a minute and I used the find my app, I had to crawl around on my knees put my ear to the snow and move around in circles, pick up a pile of snow and listen, discard, pick up a pile of snow and listen, discard, Until I eventually found it lol, Also no I was not cleaning the driveway with a broom, that was for the car," (, replaced *dot* not to get hidden, thanks PB :D )
when we had out guttering redone we had a big pile of old black guttering - guess where my black earbud fell?
Smashed A Panel Of Pre-War Glass In A Grade 2 Listed Building. I’m Doing A Job Tidying Up These Very, Very Old Sash Windows. Managed To Smash A Panel. Costly Mistake
Even if it's Grade 2 listed, you can still replace the glass. Its not difficult.
and you're allowed to put in modern safety glass, just not double glazed.

Cutting Board Exploded
Turned around after washing my hands and heard a huge crashing noise. It was my cutting board obliterating itself. I assume I cut the food too close to the burner and it got hot, then when I washed my hands with cold water it cooled down too fast. Either that or there’s a ghost that hates cutting boards.
A glass cutting board is the fastest way to dull knives. I wonder why they even exist.
The noise it makes is horrid. Only reason I can think of is that cut can go on the dishwasher?

Made The Mistake Of Not Asking Market Price… $53 Per Shrimp
Happened to me in Singapore. Not that expensive, but they lost my custom for all the time I was there.
$8k Mistake. Let’s Hope I’m Not Fired

Hospitals change the sheets after every patient in ED and triage situations.
This is not expensive. The sheets get taken of and industrially washed between every patient.
My Tesla's Horn Went Off At 4 Am For Over 20 Minutes Uncontrollably, $2000 Fix From Tesla
The burglar alarm went off at 3am in my rental house. I couldn't stop it anynway at all, even with the key. Took a hammer to it. It stopped. They tried to charge me for it, but I asked what they suggested I should have done? There was no other solution, and I felt that my neighbours would agree. We never even turned the silly thing on!
I hate Tesla with a passion. I'd rather buy a toy electric car from Tonka.
Which of these is the most expensive? The dropped satellite, the flooded fighter aircraft, the medical bill?
