Every day, we face risk. Of course, the amount can vary: a firefighter who also does base jumping on their time off and an office worker who likes to knit lead radically different lives. But the possibility that something might go wrong is always there, whether we know it or not.

The subreddit 'Oops, That's Deadly' invites everyone to post pictures of people interacting with extremely dangerous animals, plants, and other objects without realizing the threat

And based on the submissions, it's clear that some of us have zero survival instincts.

Had Both My Bathrooms Flooded With Poison Gas

Sleeping orange tabby cat resting on a black and white patterned blanket, illustrating anything is edible once concept.

Yes so I live in Turkey currently and my house has a septic tank, and apparently a government worker came by to check it because we have had way too many mosquitoes this year, and apparently there were thousands of them in there and he freaked out and pumped an unnamed horrible dense oily gas poison into my septic tank.

Bathrooms here have a drain in the floor so that when you're cleaning it you can just squeegee the water right into the drain. And houses with septic tanks, it's assumed that you will be using said drain on a frequent basis so that there is a water lock keeping nasty methane smells and also in this case poison gas from seeping up into your house. But I don't use it so that s**t came right in.

An hour after this was done, my amazing teammate of a cat woke me up and let me know there was a problem. The air purifier in my sitting room was going insane, and there was this dense horrible chemical smell as I left my curtained bedroom.

I immediately aired out the area, but this stuff is so persistent that some of it hung around underneath my bed and I had to use a two fan combo to get it out in the middle of the night. Same deal for my downstairs bathroom, both my bathrooms just have one small window for ventilation and that's it. I actually had to take care of the downstairs bathroom the next morning and the gas was still there.

So yeah, thanks for letting me ramble, hope I don't get cancer, hope my cats don't get cancer. I'm glad those mosquitoes are gone though, the biggest among them were a solid centimeter long and they would shake off being smacked, you have to roll them to break their wings and legs or they get back up and keep flying while flipping you off.

Here's a photo of my 13-year-old kitty Cutie, who let me know there was something going on. I rescued him 3 years ago and I adore him so so much. The best boy

Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) or Lysinibacillus sphaericus (B. sphaericus) can be added to septic tanks or really any standing water. These are bacteria which k**l mosquito larvae. The bacteria target insect larvae, as such are safe for mammals, birds, and fish, so they can be added to backyard ponds, when used as directed.

I am not saying this was made-up, but if there wasn't water in the P-trap, I would have thought OP would have noticed the sewer smell before the insecticide was sprayed in the septic tank. Also, I haven't traveled much, but apparently not all septic tanks are below ground and have a lid?

Dunno why you got downvoted, I had the same thought. If those chemicals can travel up through the drain, so can sewage gases and odours. The house would smell like an open sewer.

Toilets were invented in England and that methane gas entering the home through the outgoing pipe was fixed by putting that curve into the pipe. Water and waste can go out but sewer gases cannot come back in

Prior to the Industrial Revolution, some of the biggest threats were posed by "natural" phenomena: fires could burn down not just your home but the entire city and infectious diseases weren't yet curbed by vaccines. To avoid them, people largely relied on their own experience — as well as the experiences of others.

But as technology advanced, the risks also proliferated. Mines, factories, and other "dirty" workplaces were hotbeds of danger. And it's not like there was a huge emphasis on safety control. But with time, states began gathering data about accidents.

According to Arwen Mohun, a history professor at the University of Delaware and author of Risk: Negotiating Safety in American Society, it was collected to make an argument that you should pay attention to this kind of risk and that the government should step in and try to manage the risk.

The first widely collected data was about public health and about workplace accidents because those were both big political issues. The numbers were meant to shift people's perceptions of risk.

I was almost taken out by a keg that fell of the back of a truck as we were driving up a steep hill. The keg was coated in a rubber thing, so it bounced towards our windshield. Luckily my husband was driving and he took evasive action---if I was driving I probably would have frozen like an idiot (at the time I was frozen like an idiot in the passenger seat).

If you suspect that the algae is blue-green algae, pour water into a glass and wait an hour. If blue-green flakes rise to the surface, it is blue-green algae. Blue-green algae also breaks down and does not stick to a stick if you test the water with a stick. Not all blue-green algae are equally toxic, but there is no way to determine that yourself. You can clearly see from the pictures that there is a lot of algae in the water. Oh, the poor dog.

Margaret Hamilton, who played the wicked witch, was severely burned in the scene where she disappears in a puff of smoke and flame, Buddy Ebson was going to be the original Tin Man, but was badly allergic to the make up, and couldn't, and the dog who played Toto was stepped on and killed by one of the witches guards. That's why Toto looks a little different in the last half of the movie. Old Hollywood didn't f*ck around.

Toto was not killed, I'm happy to say. From Wikipedia: "During production, Terry's foot was broken when one of the Winkie guards accidentally stepped on it. A second dog had to be used while she healed. Due to the popularity of the movie, and because that role was the one she was most remembered for, her owner and trainer changed her official name to Toto. She actually appeared in 13 films. She died at age 11."

Was rotating the tires on our Impala prior to a 18 hr trip to Florida. Loosened and removed the lug nuts, reached back to grab the tire and was lacerated by the steel belt on the inside of the tire. Had NO idea, rest of the tire looked fine. So, after a $400 repair bill for rear tie rods, and a set of new skins we were off. THAT could have turned out badly.

This mismatch between what the evidence says is risky and the appropriate level of fear is what researchers call the risk perception gap.

And the interesting thing is, when our fears don’t match the evidence, the gap becomes a risk all by itself.

For instance, vaccine skeptics who fear the side effects create a greater risk of illness by forgoing the shots, since their anxieties are simply centered around the wrong thing.

Finally Found Where My Lint Trap Is

Vacuum cleaner dust filter clogged with debris and lint, illustrating unusual edible risks and close encounters with danger.

Lived in my apartment for 3 years and ignorantly thought I didn't have a lint trap in my dryer. Found out it's under the handle on the top of it, but since it was hard to pull up, I figured it was something else and I didn't want to break it and get management mad at me. Finally figured out that if I pull it towards me, it'll come out. Got lucky today. So glad I got some radioactively bright red towels that clogged the inside of my dryer and proved to me that I do indeed have a lint trap I need to manually clean.

As far as I know you're supposed to empty the lint trap after every use, so a sensor might give people the wrong impression, making them think that they don't have to empty it until the sensor says so.

There are Tiktok/Instagram influencers who post images of themselves posing on the railway lines that took victims to Auschwitz, or messing around on the Berlin H*******t Memorial-to them, Chernobyl is nothing but a background for their stupid grinning faces. A while back, a particularly offensive image of someone clowning around on the Berlin memorial went viral, and a digital artist did a project called "Yolocaust." She posted images of the 'influencers' posing on the memorial alongside victims to highlight the gross insensitivity and disrespect. Of the 12 influencers she posted, all of them took their social media down. These people aren't completely shameless, so maybe thats the way to deal with it (or in the case of these morons, let them get radiation sickness)

Air conditioners produce water that drains out and needs to be connected to a drainpipe or culvert. In this case, perhaps they did not connect it to anything and the seeping water is eroding the base dirt under those rocks. You can see that there may be a leak that channels the water down the pipe, since about a yard/meter to the foreground of the photo also shows a sinking of dirt/rock.

That being said, some of us are also more susceptible to misjudging the situation.

Overconfidence is a cognitive bias where we overestimate our abilities or knowledge and incorrectly assume that we are better, wiser, or more capable than we are.

It can seriously affect our behavior and ability to predict success and accurately weigh risk.

I have a friend who is a glassblower. One of the things she makes are large marbles. Since I am a woodturner, she asked me to make her some stands out of some gnarly cedar. At one of the at fairs we were both attending I went to her both and noticed that her display was smoking. The angle of the sun was refracting just so through a marble to cause the beam to focus on the surface of the stand and set it to smoldering.

Limestone dust is not poisonous. If you google "is limestone dust toxic" you'll get a "not toxic" back, and it's spread on fields for farming, and crushed limestone is widely sold for home landscaping. It would be easy to be misinformed about safety. The risk from Limestone dust is inhalation, and the risk is usually longterm. Jumping in the dust must have caused the kid to inhale a lot to cause rapid fatal lung damage.

Like talcum powder, powdered limestone is easily breathed into the lungs and destroys the lung tissues. It is unusual for death to occur after such a short exposure, but depending on the pH of the limestone powder, it could have provoked enough damage to cause rapid swelling and leaking of fluids into the lungs. Essentially, you would drown in your own body fluids.

Looks like a Brazilian funnel web spider. I've heard that out of all the venomous creatures in the world that spiders are the safest to handle because they are typically very expressive so you know where they stand quickly and can adjust before they feel threatened by you but otherwise are pretty curious creatures.

When I lived in western Washington (state - US) we were told we didn't have bitey snakes, so I was always assigned snake round-up when one got in the house. Never had any problems, but moved to Oklahoma and stopped.

Dogs too, btw. I have a cat and a dog, and I do occasionally bring lilies into the house. But my cat has no interest in plants at all, not even catnip. And the dog is dumb enough to eat it, but I keep them high on the mantel, so she can't reach it. They are beautiful flowers, but if you have an animal that likes to chew on plants, don't bring them home.

Just FYI - these are NOT deadly. In Australia they call them blue bottles and thousands of people get stung every year. It hurts like hell, but unless you have a rare allergy you'll be fine in about 20-30 minutes. Putting one in your mouth is quite stupid, but it's only the tentacles that sting. He probably licked the body, which is gross, but won't hurt you. If you're wondering about jellyfish that CAN k**l you, that's the box jellyfish.

Theoretically being stung in the mouth (tongue especially) could cause generalised swelling (not necessarily a severe allergic reaction). But the swelling could block the airway enough to basically suffocate.

They're also getting pushed out of their native ranges here in SoCal by the invasive brown widow, so they might be moving to "safer" areas that lack brown widows. Brown widows build their webs at ground-level, so they're the only spiders I k!ll on sight, as I have two dogs who could get bitten.

So black widow spiders are SUPER non aggressive. Studies have been done and they basically rarely bite unless theyre being crushed. A bug expert I've seen was literally poking his in the face to prove they don't bite. Safely move them away from your house without touching them and you'll be fine.

Illegal I recall when we were told not to buy cheap candles as they were made in China and they had put lead in the wicks. You could see it as well woven through the wick to ensure it burned well. I think they were banned from importing soon after being discovered. I had some that I cut up and disposed of.

They put the lead in to keep the wick upright. Every so often a tiny molten metallic bead would appear at the end of the wick and drop off into the wax. It was kind of pretty.

Looks like the tyre must have bunched around and under the rim, such that it was between the rim and the road surface. There is actually some damage visible, but it's clearly not been driven very far since the tyre finally broke free, otherwise there would be lots of damage to the bodywork as well as the wheel (which is alloy, BTW, not steel).

I think this is a brown recluse spider? If so, its bite releases a necrotising toxin which will ulcerate the wound site, destroy the surrounding tissue and, if left untreated, require excision or amputation. It can also produce a systemic reaction which could destroy red blood cells and cause organ failure. Nasty little bugger.

Yes, I agree Brown Recluse, a.k.a. Fiddleback. You can just make out the "violin" shaped marking on the top of the thorax in this photo. Also, a very small spider as revealed by size in proportional scale to the human hand; typical Brown Recluse size. Very long slender legs are also a potential identifier.

Not a brown recluse - they have shorter, thicker legs. This is probably a cellar spider or other member of the Pholcidae. Their main defense is gyrating rapidly if their web is touched. They do have weak venom, but vey short fangs.

Building collapses are a problem in China where everything is done by bribing inspectors to look the other way. Bribing corruption is an integral part of Chinese culture. You want your kid to sit in the front of the class so he can see the blackboard? You have to bribe the teacher. When we adopted our daughter from China we were instructed to bring new $20 bills. The bills were put in red envelopes and given to the government bureaucrats who were processing the adoption papers. That was so we could get out of the country within two weeks. Without the bribes, the paperwork would have taken months to get processed.

Besides the fire risk, there's the food safety risk, as keeping food warm within a short period of time is safe, but then should immediately be cooled and refrigerated to be under 40F. You can get food po1son1ng very easily, it may not k1ll you, but you will spend too much time on the toilet regretting your choices

Teflon should not be on cooking items. It was originally a great idea but we now know the dangers. Using it in other instances, such as 3-d printer tubes, is fine as long as you accept putting a non-degradable substance in a landfill eventually.

Someone got the bright idea of adding it to motor oil. The Teflon would later detach from the metal and clog the oil passages thereby locking up the motor. The product had a 50000 mile guarantee. One guess how long it took the Teflon to separate? If you said just over 50000 miles, give yourself a cookie.

Only a complete idiot would do this for any reason. The only thing that will cure a UTI is an antibiotic. The stuff you can get in the d**g store might help a little but will NOT cure it. I worked in a Urology office for 6 years.

So I remember this thread happening. The raccoon was in a park full of young kids, and the OP tried calling the police who said they weren't gonna do anything, and animal control was closed. So he moved it to save the kids, and got bitten in the process. He DID go to the hospital and get the rabies vaccine. The raccoon was euthanized and tested positive for rabies. So yes, stupid, but he did get the vaccines without much prompting and did it to try and save kids after the proper authorities refused to do anything.

Humans should stay away from any high output radio transmission. It isn't ionizing radiation but close up with large powers can heat you up like a tasty meat pie. When official maintenance crews have to get up there if they can't be powered down they still have a lower output maintenance mode. Someone who did this job told me they can feel the thing switch back to full power if they are still up there and they usually call it quits at that point but it doesn't happen often.

We have a reality show called Bondi Rescue. About our Aussie Lifeguards on Bondi Beach. One episode had a old mine get washed up. So they went and immediately cordened off the area. Putting warning cones a couple of meters around it. When they got thru to the Bomb disposal squad they yelled back - Cordon of 20 METERS NOW!!

Was Cleaning My MIL's Basement When I Came Across This

These brushes (used to clean dust off of camera lenses and vinyl LP records) have a small amount of radioactive polonium behind the metal grill at the top. They emit a low level of alpha-particle radiation as the polonium decays, which ionizes the air and allows static electricity to drain away. Alphas have very low penetrating power... they travel only a few inches in air and can be stopped by something as thin as a piece of paper. Polonium can be dangerous if swallowed (hence the"do not touch" warning). These brushes have a very limited useful lifetime because the polonium has a half-life of less than six months. They have to be replaced every couple of years even if they aren't used. This one was made in 1970. 50 years, more than 100 half-lives... there's less than a trillionth of the original polonium left. It's less radioactive than a banana ("for scale" - bananas contain potassium, and potassium-40 is mildly radioactive).

The Staticmaster 3C500 Ionizing Cartridge is a self-powered static eliminator with a small profile, making it an ideal solution for in-balance ionization. Still sold. I have done so much Google searching on these poorly presented post.

In San Diego there was a bat who landed on someone's shirt during a mud rally in the daytime: he removed his shirt very quickly then a bystander picked up the bundle and turned it over to the authorities. The bat ended up having Rabies and they had to put out Facebook and such notices to find the original shirtbat guy in order to start him on shots. The bat has short sharp teeth and you can be bit and not know it.

Here in New Mexico, we call those Coontail Rattlesnakes because of the black and white stripes on the end their tail right up against their rattles. This one looks to have just the 'button', which is the first rattle segment they grow, it's possible they may have a second segment. (I can't see fine details in this photo) A new segment is added to the rattle each time the snake sheds its skin.

In case you’re curious like me: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), also known as kala-azar, is fatal if left untreated in over 95% of cases. It is characterized by irregular bouts of fever, weight loss, enlargement of the spleen and liver, and anaemia. Most cases occur in Brazil, east Africa and India. An estimated 50 000 to 90 000 new cases of VL occur worldwide annually, with only 25–45% reported to WHO. It has outbreak and mortality potential.

More likely, as it is in the beginning stages, probably CL or Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (affecting the skin) VL stands for Visceral Leishmaniasis, a serious parasitic disease caused by the Leishmania parasite and spread by the bite of infected female sandflies. It primarily affects internal organs (like the spleen, liver, and bone marrow), not just the skin. Here’s a breakdown: Types of Leishmaniasis •Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL): •Most common form. •Causes skin sores that can look like ulcers or crater-like wounds. •Often start as red bumps at the bite site, then enlarge and break down.

Yep. Pandas, sea snakes in general have more toxic venom than land snakes because fish can swim away really quite fast. The snake needs it's prey to dïe very quickly, hence very nasty venom. On the up side, sea snakes are quite docile and some have such small fangs and mouths that they can't actually bite a person. Fishermen often handle sea snakes to remove them from netting. Also, many sea snakes have no common name, only a Latin scientific name as they are not seen widely enough to warrant one. The banded sea krait however is dangerous. Kraits are distantly related to Cobras.

Ammonia and chlorine, when combined, do not create mustard gas. Creates a dangerous gas, but not anything like mustard gas. Chlorine gas is a pulmonary agent. Mustard gas is a blistering agent. Non lethal chlorine gas cases result in hospital stays of a few days. Non lethal mustard gas cases result in hospital stays of many months, but due to it's potency mustard gas exposure is often fatal. Not that this post's example would do anything harmful, regardless, since it doesn't contain chlorine.

For those who don't know chemistry, Color-Safe bleach, doesn't use chlorine as its bleaching agent. It uses oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Mixing ammonia with it, creates a mild acid which smells bad, but will not create "mustard gas" as the OP thinks. The acid it creates is widely used in food processing, healthcare, and for disinfecting medical instruments.

Nicotine packet intended to be placed in the mouth, between the gums and the cheek, so the nicotine can be absorbed directly by the mucous membranes in the mouth. Soaking something like that in raw deer blood obviously means you'll be exposing your body and bloodstream to every single toxin, bacteria, virus, prion, and parasite in that animal's blood. And since Chronic Wasting Disease is RAMPANT in deer right now, this person could be exposing themselves to a prion disease (like Mad Cow Disease, basically.) But the more immediate higher risks are probably nasty bacteria in the deer blood.

I don’t believe for a moment there’s published research showing what happens when the blood of a game animal ‘reacts’ with nicotine. Some people really do seem to believe that because some idea has appeared in their head it must therefore be true.

Perspective is an interesting thing here. I've seen another view of this, and it turns out there's a five foot wide path on the other side of those hedges, which allows for egress none the less. Meaning this still meets fire code, as there are other directions of escape.

Honestly, they're still safe to drink from. The lead paint, is on the exteiror of the glass. It's also rather difficult to get lead into your system from just coming in contact with it, or running your lips over it. Heck, even licking that, isn't going to give you more than a few micro grams of lead in your system. You'd have to scape the paint off of several thousand of these, and then eat that paint all in one go, to get a measurable dangerous dose.

A good bike seat for kids has a back taller or as tall as the head of the child, a rigid plastic back, armrests that are one with the back and provide protection for the hips/stomach and the legs are usually protected on 3 sides. In addition the child is held into the seat with a 3- or 5-point safety belt. Do you really think the kid on his back is safer???

Basically it’s a risk of creating botulism. “USDA does not recommend adding noodles, other pastas, rice, flour, cream, milk or other thickening agents to home canned soups [...] adding these items slows the penetration of heat into the jars of soup; thus, heating of the soup in the jars may be insufficient to k**l spores of Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that causes deadly botulism.”

For those wondering, canning requires specific ingredients to make sure it doesn't get the botulism bacteria. You have to have it at a specific acid levels or use pressure canning instead of water boiling method. Pasta and meat aren't acidic enough so you have to add lime or lemon juice or citric acid. My family use to make homemade zucchini salsa and jar them using a water bath but we also have a pressure canner for other things.

Nope. Canning cooked pasta is just wrong on so many levels.

***For those that are not familiar with pressure canning or water bath methods of preserving food, do some reading on it--with the way inflation is hitting us all, you might seriously consider it as a viable means of surviving outrageous food costs. BUT, you also need to do some reading on the government's involvement--like when was the last time they did any testing and updating of their home canning studies. They were real big on pushing the home-canning agenda back during the WW's when they were rationing food for our soldiers--encouraging everyone to grow their gardens and preserve the food. That may have been the last time they actually did any research/testing on the processes...why aren't they promoting it now, when prices are out of control and so many are going hungry? While you're at it, do some reading on food-preserving in other countries, like the UK. You might be surprised in what you find.

How do we know they’re not safely canned?

Not airtight unless they have specialist equipment. Will ferment without being treated by boiling at the least. They only had to freeze it in bags instead.

Don't see any obvious mistakes here. The lids are looking good. Are there ingrediensts that you aren't supposed to can?

Canning things that are higher than about 4.6 on the PH scale, combined with a low oxygen environment like canning can be a good environment for botulism to thrive. So just because the seal is still good might not mean it's safe. In this case adding low acid meat and low acid pasta might dilute any acid from the tomatoes in spaghetti sauce. You avoid this by having a lower PH or by doing a proper pressure canning. Botulism spores are killed at about 115C held for only a few minutes but you have to know how long to let the containers heat up for to reach that internally. BTW, putting raw veggies like garlic in oil at room temp also provides an ideal environment for the bacterium to thrive.
