The horror genre is having a serious comeback at the moment. True crime shows are more popular than ever, scary movies have never been as authentic and original (thank you Ari Aster, Jordan Peele and Robert Eggers!) Even officials from the U.S. military have admitted that UFOs are real. Well, more accurately, they said that the government is in possession of “inhuman” remains. That probably creeped us out even more.

To celebrate this resurgence of all things creepy, we have prepared another list of unsettling photographs from the r/OddlyTerrifying subreddit. Whatever, I wasn’t planning on sleeping tonight anyway. Let’s scroll down and satisfy our morbid curiosity together, pandas! And to know more about why we’re so into recreational horror, read our interview with American Literature lecturer Dr. Kevin Corstorphine.

First, try using both plus at the same time. Do they work? If so, still take off the plate to check for a creep camera underneath.

There's certainly something to be said about why people actively seek out and are fans of horror. There seems to be something about scary things that draws people in. It can’t be just the fact that people like to be scared, right? Bored Panda spoke about the specifics of horror with Dr. Kevin Corstorphine, lecturer in American Literature at the University of Hull.

Dr. Corstorphine says that one of the reasons we like horror is because of its soothing element. This might sound counterintuitive, but scary things might provide comfort to us. “Being scared is thrilling,” Corstorphine says, “but I think that most people who really enjoy horror and actively seek it out find an element of solace in it. Horror is unfortunately a part of life, and fiction lets us explore it and make sense of it somehow.”

Different types of media might scare and terrify us in different ways. An eerie song might unsettle us, a scary book can conjure up different creepy images in our minds. Film, of course, is more explicit, it leaves less to the imagination, and so does photography. Thus sometimes visual media is best at evoking a scare out of us.

Dr. Corstorphine agrees: “Even though a film might have many components that work together, it's interesting that images stick out so strongly for us: Regan's possession in The Exorcist, Carrie dripping with blood at the prom, or even some of the gruesome torture scenes from the Saw films. The visual is definitely the element that stays with us and comes back even if we try to forget about it!”

This looks like my back yard & my backyard one of those most beautiful, relaxing places on earth. Moving to the swamps was the best decision I ever made. I get to hang out (at a distance) with swamp puppies & huge turtles that have taken over my river bank & claimed it as their own basking area... there's no sounds other than birds, frogs, cicadas & the wind blowing thru the cypress trees.. it's literally heaven. All I do out here is canoe around the swamp (I have a boat but I don't wanna scare the gators & turtles) & find a spot to read a book.. nobody bothers us.. I don't bother the animals. It's quite peaceful.

However, horror is not always as explicit as it is in the Saw franchise. The photos in this list are proof that sometimes things scare or unsettle us even if they’re seemingly mundane. It’s the strangeness we find in ordinary things, what Freud called unheimlich (the unhomely).

Dr. Corstorphine explains the uncanny: “[It’s] that weird mix of the familiar and strange, like when you wake up and just for a second, your dressing gown is a hooded figure standing in your bedroom. In visual art and film, I think this comes across frequently with the look in someone's face, and the eyes in particular. It's that sense that something is not quite right that's so unsettling.”

My Job Is To Inspect Every Single One Of These Car, Night Time Hits Different

I can't ever shake the feeling someone, or something, is going to jump out from one of these. Always hearing these weird whisper noises that I'm sure is the wind, but still makes your hair stand up.

I had a friend who rode the rails (the 90's) he called it "riding ol' dirty face". It's pretty dangerous. The yard cops are mean as fawk. And only jump on and off if it's stopped or on a turn where they have to slow down. I think nowadays it's pretty unsafe. I think themadays was pretty unsafe, too. It's not a 1940's movie out there any more.

This is a really smart place to put a lighthouse. The exceedingly high location all but guarantees that it won't be destroyed by the surf or heavy storm damage, it will never be subject to coastal erosion, and if the light itself is traditional kerosene (which it presumably is because how could electricity be supplied to this structure) then it will never be lost to water damage from the ocean (yes, waves that are big/strong enough can and will sometimes reach the height of a lighthouse and break glass). My question is how did the building materials, and the builders for that matter, get up there to construct this incredible project?

Corstorphine is also aware that picking favorite pieces of horror (or any kind of) media is notably personal. “I think there's a nostalgic element to horror films as well: they're bound up with the experiences you've had watching them in a specific time and place,” the academic says.

He also includes the video game franchise Silent Hill amongst his favorites for its inventive visuals. For anyone interested in visual horror, he would also recommend the art of Clive Barker, the creator of the Hellraiser franchise.

Yes, deaf people who later regained hearing have stated that they expected the sun to make a noise, and the sun actually makes a noise like hundreds of thousands of jackhammers screaming every day every minute.

What is more horrific is some of these children continued to be abused by the foster parents an agency (contracted by the state) placed them in so while in state care the abuse continued. At least one of the foster parents already had abuse allegations placed on them prior to putting some of these children in the home.

Very sad story. He starved to death because he couldn't get across the river back to safety. If he'd had a map, he would have known that there was a river crossing less than a mile from where he was. People have died making pilgrimages to the bus he died in, so they had to remove it a few years ago.

ok im going to point out that he was cremated in 1992 so there is no new evidence. As an Alskan and someone who is way too familiar with the story he actually died due to eating what he thought were wild carrots, the actual root vegetable he ate paralyzed his digestive tract thus disabling his bodies ability to remove waste or take in new food. He would have however died eating rabbits from what is known as rabbits starvation. Rabbits have so little fat on them, you can actually starve to death eating regularly

Very sad, those very berries were probably the ones that poisoned him, looked identical to edible berries in the area. The river he crossed was a stream that became a raging river later in the season. He wasn’t stupid, had many successful adventures in nature. The words he scratched into the bus while dying are both haunting and enlightening: “happiness isn’t real unless shared.” beautiful book and movie. RIP Alex Supertramp

Ok so I I swore it was berries but after reading John Murphy’s comment below I looked into it and found a great New Yorker article claiming it was most likely seeds from a plant called wild potato, which paralyzes and left him unable to forage and hunt, leading to starvation, a mistake that the author said was neither incompetent nor ignorant as Alaskans often deride him as. Interesting read: https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/how-chris-mccandless-died#:~:text=The%20toxic%20agent%20in%20Hedysarum,chief%20cause%20of%20McCandless's%20death.

This looks like the Wan Chai district housing where I stayed for a bit. The "apartments" (large closets) are about 10ft/sq and that's including the area to bathe (sink, toilet, and shower all in a corner of the room). The walls are paper thin and whole families live in these large closets. The hallways are already narrow and made more narrow because families will keep bulk items (like dressers) stacked in the halls. My husband and I would take morning poop-shifts; one of us would sit on someone's dresser in the hall and read rather than sitting next to the other while they poo, only separated by a piece of glazed glass. I love Hong Kong!!

Apparently, her husband Elmer (whom her family hated) blamed her death on the government. Democrats, in particular. She died of natural causes. A Google search says that Elmer is in the same cemetery but as far away from Lilly as her children could manage.

For those curious: "The secret behind the cryptic epitaph of Lilly Gray, "Victim of the Beast 666," rests with her apparently nutcase husband Elmer. She died of natural causes (she was 77), but Elmer blamed her death on the "Beast 666" of government, and particularly Democrats. The company that made the headstone recalls that Lilly's family hated Elmer, and when he died in 1964 he was buried in the same cemetery but as far from Lilly as possible."

Lastly, “dark copers” are the closest to what Dr. Corstorphine described. Through frightening stimuli, they’re able to challenge themselves and challenge their fears in order to deal with their anxieties in the real world. The researchers at the Recreational Fear Lab found that horror fans are more resilient psychologically, as was proved in the beginning of the 2020 pandemic.

Its both. Shiva (male presenting) and Shivani/Ma Shakti Devi (female presenting) are the same entity/god. It represents the duality of the god as both creator and destroyer. You cannot have one without the other. Any act of creation is destroying something at the same time. You cannot have one gender without the other. Most of the time, statues are male to focus on its primary aspects but there are plenty of female statues too.

Good news: the reason it doesn't have a ground level door (there's a ladder to reach a second floor door) is because it's a Spring House / Cistern Resevoir. So in 1885, that supplied water to the surrounding estate. Creepier news: the surrounding estate is an old Mental Asylum: Brattleboro Retreat. All things considered, it's not the creepiest or darkest asylum I've seen.

The door is/was the second floor "window". This is a drying hut. The wagon backed up to it and you unloaded your firewood/hay/tobacco (not in Vermont), etc into the building to dry out and remain dry. The ventilator at the top of the building allows moisture and excess heat to escape but keeps the snow out.

    Cara G

Swim SIDEWAYS if you are able to 1. swim and 2. keep your bearings, which is difficult to do when caught in a rip. This happened to my sister and me in 1997 in the Atlantic Ocean off the south shore of Montauk. Long Island's south shore (when you get further east beyond the barrier of Fire Island), is EXTREMELY rough and volatile because of its unique position. The ocean rolls in from both the east and upwards from the south, smashing into the coastline and often creates riptides that show up seemingly out of nowhere. When you are taught how to swim here, you are also taught how to maneuver out of a rip. It works. Fortunately, she and I were relatively close to the shoreline and it didn't take us much time to safely swim out of it and get back to the beach but it does disorient you for a moment. It feels like the ocean is pulling you in every possible direction at once and it's difficult to know which way is even up. But if you don't panic, you can get yourself out safely.

Basically think of it this way: this is where the wave energy is weakest because the water carried in by the wave(s) around it are pouring back out to the sea in this focused area. Think of it as a waterfall, and the current can toss you far out to sea because the energies are parting as the water flows out. Some are shorter than others.

I was there. If you have ever received an alert for a flash flood or extreme weather, then you have heard the piercing noise your phone makes. I was in shock in the first 5 minutes. Trump and North Korea had been rattling sabers. I knew I was in range a N. Korean missile. I was on Kauai, about 35 miles from the Barking Sands missile base. Within about 15 minutes, I was able to make peace with death. I was in paradise after all, and we have to die sometime. I was sad for what a nuclear exchange would mean to the world, especially with Trump with his finger on the button. My roommate said F it and went surfing. I couldn't find any online news to shed light on the situation, but the absence of news neither assured nor alarmed me. I posted a goodbye on Facebook. In the end, that was the worst part. Not one of my friends on the mainland responded.Of course, it was only 5 AM on the West coast, but even hours later my post was barely acknowledged. I have barely touched social media since.

My former next door neighbor was in Pearl Harbor when it was bombed in 1941. She was a child and described the events once to my sister and me. I recall her telling us that she, her mother, and her sister had to drop what they were doing and evacuate immediately and that she had no idea what was going on until later on. She left with no shoes on her feet.

I was there, but luckily live as absolutely far as possible one can be from Honolulu and still be in the state. Which is where we assumed the missiles would strike. Still, we had the warning system go off & just hoped that the trade winds would keep us completely safe. Most of my community didn’t really do anything to hide or hunker down, assuming there wouldn’t be strikes on the Big Island, but it was surreal just thinking about what was apparently about to happen and what that would mean going forward. Then someone mentioned we may not be out of the woods given the possibility of the missiles being off course. I know my friends on Oahu were terrified even more than we were, which must have been severely traumatic.

With the wildfires still active in Canada and bushfires started in Australia, how are they going for fire-fighters (as they usually send them from one country to the other, but fires not normally concurrent)?

I've lived in the Appalachians and this is not that unusual. Someone tragically lost their home through death or destitution and the Earth just reclaims the area. The wind blows out the paths, the grasses grow over it, and then the underbrush hides all evidence beneath it.

Only fake in the sense that the image is modelled. But it is modelled to show what was understood at the time after sonar and submersible had examined the area, the wreckage and the distances. You are correct it is not a photo of the real site however.

Had an extremely similar experience. I have a first floor room at the front of the house and one late night (2-3 am) while I was up studying all of a sudden a torch light beam started moving from one end of my room’s windows to the other as if someone was trying to see inside my room. Scared the hell out of me. Thinking someone was in our yard, I ducked down and literally crawled to my parents room. My dad proceeded to stupidly open the front door to talk to those who shone the light. Luckily they claimed to be two policemen looking for a particular address. They left after asking us for directions but part of me feels like they weren’t real police. How would policemen not know where to find an address and even if they didn’t know, it doesn’t sound like a good idea to visit a random house at night to ask for directions. Also I didn’t hear any vehicle which is weird cause why would they be looking for a random house at 2-3 am on foot??

I'm not sure what this one is showing us. North Koreans do not have internet access even in Pyongyang, as far as I'm aware. The real terrifying part is when you look outside of NK's capital. Pyongyang is a misdirection tactic used to prevent the world from questioning what goes on in the rest of Kim's (and the previous Kim, and the Kim before him) dictatorship. It serves a "look here, not over there!" purpose. Hence, all the pomp, circumstance, pageantry, and opulence. Anything outside of Pyongyang is a veritable desolate wasteland where the people live in the worst type of poverty and crimes against humanity imaginable, electricity is turned on and off at random, food is scarce and citizens often resort to eating insects or soil for nutrients, and the Kim Dynasty has been enacting a - quite literal - genocide against its people for over 80 years. The scary part of NK is not Pyongyang. It's everywhere else.

Looking a satellite view of North Korea at night is really stark. I looked this up after reading a book called 'In Order to Live', written by a young woman who escaped North Korea when she was about 12-13. She details in the book what you mentioned here. I think most of us are aware that it's bad there, but reading exactly how bad and in what ways was shocking.

Pyongyang is scary enough, with its colossally wide boulevards and the female cops (chosen for their looks) who robotically ‘control’ traffic that hardly exists. (Dictators love super-wide avenues as much as goose-stepping soldiers.) Also its daily city-wide wake-up call and calisthenics over public loudspeakers, the non-stop propaganda broadcasts in every home, and more. Must-see: The 2016 Russian documentary ‘Under the Sun’ covers a year in the life of a Pyongyang family whose sub-teen daughter is about to join the national Children's Union on the Day of the Shining Star (Kim Jong-il's birthday). Director Vitaly Mansky beat the regime’s censors with a camera that had two record modes. Thus Mansky could turn off one recorder (which satisfied his minders) but surreptitiously leave the other one on to capture supposedly “off-camera” NK life. It’s chilling from end to end—especially at the very end, when you see that little girl turn into a robot before your very eyes.

If you search for the Öresund bridge on YouTube, there's documentaries about how they built an island for the bit where the bridge connects to the tunnel. There's a road and rail line. Used it loads myself, the road is part of the main motorway between the two countries and the railway line is fast. Goes to the airport in Copenhagen and I think they have now continued the line on the Swedish side right up to Malmö airport, as a branch off the main line.

Edited to add: I know the word is suicide. I wasn't doing it to appeal to some censorship thing. I have experiences that I would rather not remember, so I use euphemisms. Lord help me. Circumstraint was not invented for the sole purpose of circumcision. It was designed to restrain infants for a multitude of purposes such as blood draws, x-rays, CTs, etc. circum, meaning "circle in Latin! As in restrained all the way around, so they don't flail around!

So you don't think kids get to decide to have gender reaffirming surgery but you can decide to chop off a healthy part of their penis for religious reasons without their consent. Gotcha

Do not @ me that it's for health reasons. It's not. That's a myth. Stop mutilating babies for your crazy cults.

If you think this is inhumane, you should read up on the horrific things done to intersex children who are born with ambiguous genitalia. "Mutilation" is an understatement there.

over 30 years ago they told me it's standard for health reasons after they released my son from NICU. They released him from the hospital without doing it & his Dr said if they did it now it would require anesthesia so he would have to wait . We/ He never had it done & he's just fine

My husband “wrapped” a gift for his brother in a beat up box with duct tape. He was forced to open it at the restaurant where they were celebrating because the host wouldn’t seat him without proving it wasn’t a bomb. The moral of the story is that if you want to bomb a restaurant wrap it in pretty birthday paper and they will walk you right in.

When i was a kid, we lived in town in northern ohio that was founded in the 1700's, in the historic part of town. So our house, had a coal cellar. Unfinished basement area was about 20% the size of the house and in the back wall, were two little windows that led to darkness and grime (the area where coal was stored once upon a time) creepy as hell, so the basement was left unused aside from storing old boxes and magazines, we didn't go down there for YEARS. Well, apparently there was a leak in one of the pipes. Just a drip, right over a huge pile of magazines. When i was in high school, a buddy and i built a fire pit in my yard, and eventually ended up poking around in the basement. The magazines, had turned into a single condensed brick due to the leak. Perfect fire pit fuel! We'd chisel off a few inches, and it would burn for hours. Took us all summer to get through it. When we picked up the last bit....we found a translucent, pink mass of what looked like gelatin.

Size of a watermelon. My buddy and i freaked out for about 30 seconds, and than watched the mass dissolve...deflate into a puddle. This happened 25 years ago. We both still tell EVERYONE about it, and to this day we have no idea what the hell it was beyond mold/fungus.

Slime Mold. There's hundreds of types, not sure which this is though (maybe fuligo rufa, but usually those are white or orange/yellow in colour), but if you want another kinda creepy looking one, Arcyria Stipata looks like raw ground beef, or "brains" :)

That's what was assumed, but both of us have spent an embarrassing amount of time and effort over the years researching them and have never seen anything that looks quite right. It has aspects of both the examples you gave....but with the opacity of pink jello. Nothing we've seen looks "right" which just makes the obsession...dumber lol

Serious answer? Because the early church (and other religions) had a tradition of preserving reliquaries as signs of faith. Usually its just a piece of fabric the person wore, a finger bone or lock of hair but sometimes you get items like this. In the 15th (?) century, her hometown & family wanted her body to be returned home, and a group of people tried to smuggle her out of Rome where she had been interred. They were unable to get her past the guards so they smuggled her head out which was remarkably preserved. Catholics believe that praying THROUGH these reliquaries will assist their petition to god. This tradition of reliquaries and prayer to them was one of the (many) reasons for the Protestant & Anglican splits from the Catholic Church in the early 15th Century. You will still see reliquaries in a Protestant or Anglican church, but its more of a historical artifact with significance than something you pray to or through. It definitely more complex than that, but I didnt want to rant TOO much lol Edited to fix some grammar and spelling :)

This is/was quite common. A saint would be chopped up into relics and different parts spread around the world as local shrines for pilgrimages. You can't make the holy land but you can make the cathedral 40 miles away. In NYC, most of St. Cabrini is in her shrine but her heart is in a church in Italy and parts of her are in a church in Chicago. She died in 1917 so this isn't something that only happened 500 years ago either. Side note - there are 4 heads of John the Baptist out there. One of them is in the Great Mosque of Damascus.

I think this is neat, not terrifying. Geologists dug multiples of these doing research along the Russian/Finnish border. They had to restart several times because the drill would break 30km down and you can't exactly climb down and fix it.

If I remember correctly from the last time this was posted, the owner had their siding and roof reinforced with more fire-resistant material in the past. The position of the house played a big role too with only having one other house next to it not separated by a street the fire really only had one side it could have gotten to it.

Horsehair worms. They are parasites that live inside of usually grasshoppers, beetles, and praying mantises. What they do is both grotesque and fascinating. As they grow, they takeover the entire inside of the host, eating everything in the body until they reach the brain. Once they gain control of the command center of their host, they compel it to seek out a body of water and drown itself so that they can leave the host's body. In other words, insects infected with horsehair worms are essentially zombies stumbling around with no control over their own bodies. Terrifying.

Horseshoe crab bloot contains amebocytes,a type of blood cell that binds to bacterial endotoxins (harmful components secreted by bacteria), and the use of the amebocytes is critical in vaccine and drug development. The crabs are captured, bled for a certain amount and then put back. Sadly, around 30% still die afterwards. There's a few alternatives developed by farmaceutical companies, of which some have been approved for use in the EU. In the US, the use of HS Crab blood has increased (or so a google search tells me).

I'm not sure if you are an expert or simply being helpful passing on information, but if it's the former, has anyone looked into ways to reduce the mortality rate? If they're dying because of the environment in which we extract their blood, could it be changed, even though the process may cost more? If we are taking too much blood, could we take less and do more crabs? My view on things like this is we should make the process as humane as possible, even if it costs more money. IMO one of the roles of government is to meet the needs of society while protecting its values. So if the process costs more, but the mortality rate drops, it's a good use of tax dollars. So if there are ways to get this done and drop the mortality rate, I think we should look at pursuing them. Either way, thank you for the information

Could be a carriage stoop. I lived in a VERY old house in Detroit that had a couple of these, one in back and one in front. They were to provide a place to disembark from a carriage without stepping onto (possibly) muddy ground. There were smaller stepping stones leading to the front and back doors.

That's because they hire two people who are expected to stock, clean, unload the truck, run the register, and more, and get paid slave wages too. Surprised they can keep any employees.

People think that because the dolphin brain has so many more folds than ours, it means they are more intelligent or have more complex networks than humans. Which some find creepy.

    Pyla

No, if you read the science, the hotter oceans produce more energetic storms, consequently Cali could be in line for getting more rain, more tropical storms and even possible true hurricanes. With the issues of flooding in the agri valley's already reclaiming a long lost lake.

Had a big old husky turn up on our front porch when I was a kid. He stayed there all day. My mom was terrified & wouldn't let us out of the house but my brother & I were sneaking him hot dogs out the front window when she was in the other room. When my dad got home, the dog jumped up on him, he was big enough to rest his paws on dad's shoulders, and gave him big kisses. He stayed with us for a week til we found his owner. We had a little dog and a rabbit at the time and he was so gentle with them and us. I named him Wolfgang. Sad we had to let him go but we got him home.
