If anyone has one of these, for the love of whatever god you believe in, send them to me. Screens, batteries, controllers...that stuff can be recycled into fun little projects. I recently scavenged an old vape that had a 7.6v LiPo battery inside. It was actually two 18650 cells side by side, which were separated and used in other things.

How shonky is your coding if giving up on firmware support makes a person go blind? Ceasing supporting firmware means the existing firmware should continue to work until hardware failure. You know, like that old PC from 2001 that you used to run XP on. The harddisc might be a dodo and it might think it is 1970, but turn the thing on and AMIBIOS will start it up, just like you'd expect. Firmware doesn't mysteriously stop working unless it's designed to do so, or is horrifically badly written, or some part relies on an embedded certificate that is invalidated (but, then, failure to cope with that falls into the badly written category).

Alternatively look at your router/internet box to see if you have parental controls to restrict when some devices can access the internet, and then just set your printer to "never". Then it can sit on your network, you can use it as a regular printer device, and your router will refuse to pass on any data between it and the outside world.

I use HP Instant Ink and last year my card expired. They sent me an email and asked me to update the info within 48h or I risk losing access blah blah blah. So I did...and life carried on with no drama. [Side note: While I fundamentally disagree with cartridge DRM, new ink cartridges are shockingly expensive. I have a bunch of old printers in the barn because for a while around 2010ish it was cheaper to buy a new printer than the carts to go into an existing one, but now they come with "starter" cartridges. Anyway, Instant Ink is a fiver a month for fifty pages, which is plenty and I don't have to worry about what I print or when and where I'll get more ink. I feel I'm saving money over buying my own cartridges, even clone ones (if they even work). It's a huge racket that I wish the EU would look into, but for now we are stuck with coloured water that costs more per ml than upmarket designer perfume...

I'm not sure if anyone cares much about the sport itself (rowing isn't exactly a thing in the British sporting schedules), it's the rivalry that we're here for. Like a brute force version of University Challenge.

I just got signed off work for a few days. Pulled my back. Hurts like hell. Got to see a doctor, got some painkillers, and will be going to a kinesiologist on Tuesday. All covered because I live in a socialist country. Anything else would be...abhorrent and bizarre.

We had a big old forest around my boarding school and it was *flattened*. I mean stripped so you could see the contour of the land and across to the town by the main road. It was a traumatic sight for the thirteen-year-old me. Of course, the games teacher, not knowing what to do in a crisis, told us to go our regular run around the woods. We cheerfully waved hello to brave BT engineers chainsawing trees along the road. That's the point where I decided "stuff this" and did a U-turn back through the old camping ground. Some of the more intrepid kids tried to do the woodland circuit...eventually getting rescued by helicopter. And, yeah, the cops tore the games teacher a new bunghole for that dumb idea. BT had the lines back up in about six hours and all the calls were free the day after. It a week before the power was restored. We found out later that a tree took out the local exchange so the BT guys rigged up something in the back of an old van and ran it off a bunch of car batteries.

In the summer of 1987 my mother was going to buy a little house down near the south coast of England. All the paperwork was in place and... she got gazumped. In a way that made the estate agent furious "This! Cannot! Happen!". But it did. Mom was a big believer in "things happen for a reason" so she was like "let it go, we'll find another". She eventually did, and in 1992 bought the place in France that I'm writing to you from today. And the 1987 home? Well, October 1987 was a violent storm that caused a huge amount of damage along the south coast. That property did not survive. My memory is hazy, but I think the roof collapsed into the first floor that collapsed into the ground floor and the stress of that along with the wind brought one of the side walls down. Luckily the new owners were not there at the time.

Not my story. A person was going through a messy breakup with somebody who was a liar, fake, and cheater (to name just a few attributes). He was also a massive poser. She used to complain that she would have to go put money on the electricity key (he had a key meter because he never paid the bills then blamed her for failing to pay the bill that arrived when she was elsewhere sorting out another of his messes). For some reason it irrationally bothered her. So we hatched a plan. The key meter would give a fiver of emergency credit if you pull out and reinsert an empty key. This would be deducted from the following time it was topped up. So, the day before she left, she turned EVERYTHING on until the meter ran out. Then she pulled out the key and put it back in again. Then she tore the instruction booklet into little bits and set them alight in the kitchen sink. And, finally, she turned everything on until just a pound of credit remained. [continued]
