Hey Pandas, Which Thing Annoys You The Most About Having Mental Illness?
The self-doubt that I even have a mental illness/trauma in the first place. I tell myself my trauma isnβt valid because it happened a while ago, it didnβt turn into PTSD and I know people who have been through a lot worse. I invalidate my anxiety because itβs different than what other peopleβs anxiety looks like. I ignore my trauma from the pandemic because βeveryone else experienced it, so does it really count as trauma?β I tell myself my depression wasnβt valid because I was able to overcome it. On good days when I have my meds, I feel bad for saying I have ADHD, even if I donβt say it, and even when I know itβs true. I think that partly comes from the fact that one, I donβt fit the little white boy template for a lot of mental illnesses, and two, Iβm at the less severe end of the spectrum. I feel guilty getting help because I think I can handle my mental health in my own, and Iβm taking opportunities for help away from someone who has it βworseβ than me. I donβt count my extreme overthinking or intrusive thoughts as problems because I donβt have a name or diagnosis for them, even though theyβre impacting my mental health. Iβm grateful that I can notice these things, because I know thatβs the first step in overcoming this. Honestly, writing this has been really helpful. I appreciate this post a lot, thank you. π
