Told my grandma I’m not a girl anymore. First thing she says is, “That’s your opinion.” Then I went more in depth and told her I was a demigirl, and explained what that meant. She said, “There’s boys and girls, and you’re my girl.” I didn’t tell her my new pronouns (they/she) but it’s not like she’d use them anyway. She’s super traditional (thinks it’s my fault for wearing revealing clothes if I get stared at, obviously doesn’t respect sex workers, thinks trans women shouldn’t be allowed in sports, etc.) and she shuts me down every time I try and educate her. It’s not that hard to learn. My other grandma gets it. She understands that there’s more than two genders, that the victim is never to blame if they get catcalled or sexually harassed. And guess what? She’s seven years older.

It’s just so frustrating. My dad (younger grandma’s son) insists that she isn’t homophobic or transphobic. But when she asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I told her I wanted to be an activist for GRSM rights. She turned to me and said, “no, that’s not what I wanted to hear.”

It went better than I thought, though. My best friend was there for moral support. Grandma and I hugged and she still loves me, so that’s good. I’m going to come out to my other grandma soon!
