You can hear folks claim that kids need the internet to study and learn new things. And that is absolutely true. But most of them were very probably referring to reading scholarly journals and educational articles and the like.

The internet has its own way of approaching education, and that is through things like Today I Learned on Reddit, YouTube channels like VSauce And CGP Grey, and, a personal favorite of mine, Tumblr.

Yep, the microblogging social medium, among many things, hosts some of the best-written narratives and rhetoric of educational nature, whether it’s about birds or dragons or restaurants as mafia fronts.

So, in light of this, we bring you some of the best among the best moments in Tumblr history about world history, historical figures, facts and everything else that has happened on our lovely planet in the last whatever years.

Scroll down to see the various submissions, learn something, and don’t forget to hit the upvote button on the submissions you enjoyed the most. And why not comment! Commenting is good for the soul.

Sensible, practical people will always find the best and most straightforward way of building, regardless of which era or country they come from. Just because they come from a different era, doesn't make them any less intelligent. Same with tools-look at Paleolithic tools-they might be primitive, but they were effective and efficient, and the makers had to have some understanding of the different types of stone and other materials, and know to make use of cleavage planes, and knew to create different edges for different tasks (like serrated, beveled, scraping rather than cutting).

All hail the sapphic poetry queen, Sappho! In Ancient Greece, homosexual relationships were ok between men, but not women, so the fact she wrote openly about having female lovers must have taken some guts.

We're also learning that they were quite intelligent, resourceful, and caring. Which means that 'Neanderthal', as an insult, is not really an insult anymore.

And how Mozart trolled that one singer that he despised working with. I forget her name, but, basically he noticed how she threw her head up on high notes and dropped her chin down on low notes, so he composed a song consisting of alternating lows and highs in rapid succession so it looked like her head was bobbing like a chicken when she sang it. Mozart was awesome.

I saw a fairly convincing documentary claiming that Caligula wasn't crazy, but believed that, as emperor, he should not have to answer to the Senate. He appointed his horse as consul to show that, for him, his horse was more important than the senators. He also wanted to establish that, as emperor, he was also a God, so he declared war on another god who pissed him off. It was more to show his people that he was a god, not because he believed that stabbing the sea would make any difference with some God. People need to remember that most people believed in gods at that period.

What's even weirder is that Poseidon, amongst many other more obvious things like sea and storms, was also god of horses. So maybe he was mad the horse didn't vote the way he wanted and took it up with his manager?

Funnily enough, when we tried to communicate with a polish student at the school where I work, Google translate decided to make the exact same mistake ans the poor girl was horrified until we reverse-translated the statement and proceeded to apologize profusely in every language we could.

Those overabundand curly wigs were popularised by king Louis XIV of France who suffered from early baldness and then overcompensated. He was so influential in 17th century Europe that everyone copied his style. American judges wear curly wigs to this day (on TV, at least. I'm not from the US) because one French dude was self-conscious about his receding hairline
