Not all people who seem bad are actual monsters. But not all seemingly kind ones are actually kind, either. And unfortunately, there are quite a few of the latter kind out there, praised by people who don’t know any better; or simply don’t know enough about such individuals.

Redditor u/Independent_Sun_592 recently started a discussion about seemingly kind people, asking fellow netizens to name someone who is generally considered a great person but is actually a monster. Redditors had quite a few names prepared, so if you’re interested to see who were the wolves in sheep’s clothing, scroll down to find their answers on the list below.

Below you will also find Bored Panda’s interviews with the OP themselves and two psychology professors, Professor at Stetson University in Florida, Christopher J. Ferguson, and Professor at Georgia Gwinnett College in Georgia, David Ludden, who were kind enough to answer a few of our questions.

40 People Who Seem Great, But Are Monsters Deep Inside This seems kind of weird as I still don’t understand how anyone can defend them.. but the Kardashians. Everyone thinks they’re “self-made” and have done a lot of charity work, but in reality they are professional scam artists and masters at tax evasion and fraud. There isn’t a good one in the entire bunch.

I feel so badly for their children. North West was a brand baby from the start, including the fact that they named her North West. Now they're putting her on stages and crying, "Why is everyone being so mean to her?! She's just a child!!" Okay, but you're an adult who put her in that situation knowing what would happen.

Kim Kardashian was pregnant on Jay Leno, and he said, as a joke (paraphrased), "Why don't you name her North." So they did. That's the origin of her name.

I just want society to get past these people. They've been famous long enough. I remember when Kim K was nothing more than some girl that got seen out and about with Paris Hilton(back when Paris was in the spotlight); I'd gladly take Paris back, lol.

My grandmother gave Oral Roberts $10,000. He gave her a Bible with the words of Our Lord Jesus Christ printed in red, and Oral Roberts' name on the cover, embossed with gold. Other than the embossing, I could have bought the same Bible at Walmart for $7.99.

But, it's not the worst species of religion out there. I'd even say, all in all, it's the most honest variant of christianism, as they don't try to cover up them having a Gulfstream and a Ferrari and a house that has more windows than Bill Gates', but, pretty much, ask their congregation to accept and contribute to their wealth that, obviously, is god's very own wish for them to have. After all, this may even, somewhattedly, be the core and reason for any and every religion including their gods, to have been invented in order to amass wealth and control.

I used to repair Hammond organs. There are very old instruments that require yearly service. Many churches would wait years to get the organ serviced so by that point there were so many things broken that the repair would be in the hundreds. They would often complain about the cost and not get the organ 100% repaired. Then as I left I would drive by the pastor's Lexus. His car payment is apparently their priority.

In a recent interview with Bored Panda, the OP shared that it was their interest in history that encouraged them to ask this particular question. “I was reading and studying a lot on Julius Caesar and a lot of historians and history buffs consider him a great figure of history. However, to the Gauls, which is now modern France, he would be considered a monster as he killed or enslaved 1 million of them in his conquest of Gaul.”

Dr.Oz, Dr.Phil, Jenny McCarthy, the endless parade of fad diets, pseudo medical/health products....all of it propped up by a legion of the kind of people that watch day time talk shows, who praise every little thing she says and does. So much evidence to her being trash, but i really would have hoped after the Ellen fallout that people would take a closer look at Oprah...but of course that's never going to happen....

I went off her the time she had an African woman on her show who was from a cultural group where the beauty standard demands women be overweight and developing girls were often literally force-fed large amounts of food, to the point of vomiting, to achieve that. This clearly well educated woman was trying to explain to Oprah how it's a cultural problem that results in trauma to these girls, but Oprah kept interrupting every five frigging seconds to act like this was the best f*****g news she's ever heard, going "your culture sounds amazing, there's a place for me, yay!" and treating the entire thing as a joke. She did not even once acknowledge or legitimise this woman's genuine concerns, which by the way were partially based on her own trauma of being a victim of this practice. I have never seen an interviewer be so blatantly and obnoxiously self-centred to the detriment of her guest as in that clip.

“But I also think you have to look at it in the perspective of the time and in those times would he have been considered great, or a monster. The mom was trying to handle it best she could and try to answer her kid's questions. Dr. Phil point blank told her that was inappropriate of the mom to say anything and told her flat out "You shut your mouth." repeatedly. The mom kept asking what she was supposed to do. All he would say is "shut your mouth". Sounds like Dr. Phil believes in the "bro code".

Well me too, I also grew up in them but never knew and still don't really know anyone that needed a blood transfusion, 26 years later. It's also not all bad news because some progress has been made and techniques have been developed or perfected, so some operations don't really need any blood any more and I see this as a win because the problem with blood is it's limited shelf-life and the fact that it's quite costly.

fun fact: Christopher Columbus is responsible for introducing syphilis to europe on his return from america. however, the people from america didn't have syphilis either at that point. in fact, prior to his/his crew's introduction of the illness to europe, the only creature on the planet that carried syphilis was the llama.

This is a very skewed and somewhat untrue version of events. The 'Christopher Columbus' theory of syphilis is one of several theories, none of which are conclusive. Syphilitic scarring on bones from the Americas has been found on human bones dated at thousands of years old.

I don’t really get why people say he discovered it when it was already full of people. Same goes for Australia. It’s a very euro-centric mindset. We were the only ones to really be recording history, doesn’t mean there was never visual or contact by other humans before. This is b******t

Not really. Colonists complained of "mismanagement" and brutality....towards the colonists. Not the slaves. Columbus and a few of his men were jailed while an investigation was conducted, once completed they were released....after 6 weeks. By King Ferdinand. Columbus was a product of his time, and his behavior reflects the standards of that time. You don't get to judge history by the standards of the present....to do so is to dismiss all the progress that has been made.

We don't need to celebrate him now. His treatment of indigenous people was abhorrent. He wrote in his journals that prepubescent girls were the most valued item for trade among his men. They cut off workers hands and made them wear their own hands around their necks if they didn't bring enough gold.

Talking about liking certain people, especially on a superficial level, Prof. Christopher J. Ferguson pointed out that we generally judge people by how they present themselves and, ultimately, how charming they are (which might not work with historical figures, as they can’t alter the way they present themselves anymore). And for the most part, that seems to work out fine, as—although we all engage in some "positive image management"—most people's outward personalities are reasonably representative of who they are.

However, according to the expert, some folks learn to game that system and purposefully present themselves in ways that will be attractive to others that don't necessarily represent who they truly are. “This may include insincere flattery, learning to be interesting and ‘cool’ or presenting oneself as a moral crusader,” he said.

The USSR's heads, after Stalin at least, shared some basic rationality. Chrushtshow should have remained in power another few years, ... anyway, as for Ronny, I totally agree. He wasn't even dumb - often claimed - he was downright insane, way above Nixon in that regard, just a less showing, less obvious trade thereof. Even more dangerous? I mark his presidency as the beginning of the end of a somewhat functional republican party. And seeing things now, the beginning of the end for America; we'll see this November if Trump finishes the job. But this has been a 50 year effort by Christian conservatives to ruin this country (if WE cant have it NO ONE can!) and it started with Reagan.

I was flabbergasted at the hagiographies when he died. He was a proper villain figure to me and those around me and the butt of so many jokes about his intelligence (especially in comedy shows such as Not the Nine O'Clock News). Obviously I knew that many on the right liked his *politics*, but I'd had literally no idea that a good chunk of Americans thought he was one of the greatest statesmen ever. 40 People Who Seem Great, But Are Monsters Deep Inside Chris Brown. His fame is particularly disturbing to me because over the years since his attacks on Rihanna, he has been involved in numerous altercations, charged with multiple counts of abuse, holding women hostage, sexual assault and armed standoffs with the police. It’s clear he has not evolved or matured as a person and presents a significant threat to many people. The fact he still gets support and is collaborating with artists is very disheartening.
I’m in favour of allowing grace for those who have mended their ways, but this individual has not stopped hurting and endangering people, almost exclusively women and the fact he’s still seen as a sought after artist is confusing to me.

BAD ADVICE. HR Department are NOT your friends. They work for the corporation, not you. They are, however, tasked with keeping a motivated, productive workforce, and that means making sure management doesn't abuse the workforce or drive good workers away. And they are tasked with preventing the business from getting embroiled in regulatory actions or lawsuits. Further, being the first to report and characterize any event to HR lends you credibility, and makes the company look really bad to any regulators or jurors.

In theory this is great, kind of like communism. I worked in HR for 20+ years and I can tell you in all honesty not a single person I worked with put the employees first. It's a business and that's who you work for, so that's what you protect, not the people. Damage control is always about how the company is affected, not the people involved. We once had a child SA'd in one of our stores and I was called into my VP's office, not to talk about how to support the employees who were traumatised by the event or how to support the child, but to manage whether the news got out or if other stores had heard, and how to make sure the kid's family kept quiet. Aka how it affected the company. I saw this kind of thing over and over again. They say they're there for the employees because they're supposed to. Hell, they may even believe it, but it's just not how things are.

“In recent years, as victimhood has gained currency, presenting oneself as a ‘victim’ may also be a viable strategy for some [people],” Prof. Ferguson continued. “Such people may present leadership qualities without having the internal substance to back them up and their true purpose is less to guide others towards doing something useful as opposed to lining their own pockets.“

40 People Who Seem Great, But Are Monsters Deep Inside Mufuggin Gandhi. When Gandhi's wife was stricken with pneumonia, British doctors told her husband that a shot of penicillin would heal her; nevertheless, Gandhi refused to have alien medicine injected into her body, and she died. Soon after, Gandhi caught malaria and, relenting from the standard he applied to his wife, allowed doctors to save his life with quinine. He also allowed British doctors to perform an appendectomy on him, an alien operation if ever there was one. Also he served on the British side in South Africa and earned a medal for valor.

This is similar to mother Teresa. The hospital she set up for People with cancers were not given any pain medication at all. She believed that pain and suffering brought you closer to God. Also these people were not Catholics or Christian but they were baptized against their will or without their knowledge before death. She was literally just snatching souls for her God. Yet when she needed back surgery she came to the US. This is very controversial with many people and why they feel she should not be considered a saint.

What you are referring to is a Hindu principle known as Brahmacharya which is a virtue in Hinduism. I'm not sure if practitioners of it usually test themselves or not. One belief Ghandi had was that to achieve Brahmacharya a person had to be free from all feelings of arousal. The "test" you are referring to was a religious test of pious self control. Just cause it's not normal to us doesn't mean it wasn't an innocent religious test to a man that live in a totally foreign land with a totally foreign religion almost a hundred years ago. It's not something we would condone today or that I know to be or not to be normal for the place and time period, I just prefer not to rush to judge others for things I don't understand.

We're not talking about his open support to Hitler, and how he wrote that the blacks were an inferior race? I see someone has already covered the "sleeping naked with children" (so much an English newspaper started a crowdfunding to get the poor man some blankets so he didn't have to use the bodies of girls to warm himself up). But we STILL celebrate Peace Day to commemorate him.

Gandhi did not openly support Hitler, thats a myth. He wrote him letters calling him "Friend" because he was asking him to change his policies and was being concillatory, not because Hitler was his friend. He did write racist things against Africans when he was young, and then later in life promoted racial equality.

The only reference for these claims seems to be the Harvard Crimson - not exactly a reliable source. Other sources including wikipedia say that she suffered two heart attacks and wanted traditional doctors. Her son ordered penicillin. The doctors didn't want to use it because it would not be helpful to the kidney failure that was progressing. Hardly the way it is characterized above.

The all-white-male supreme court ruled against him for the trail of tears. He continued. But then he lost the election, despite winning the popular vote. (Popular vote among those who could vote, when over half the population can't vote it's not really a 'popular' vote) And you know what this man - who had a decent claim to having won the election and who had flagrantly violated the law before - did? He conceded. And now about half the US population wishes to elect someone who fails to hold even THAT shockingly low standard. edit: clarifying that over half the population at the time could not vote, and thus "popular vote" is somewhat misleading, since I don't think anyone bothered checking if women would have voted for him or his opponent.

All the bad things being said here about Jackson are quite true and important. What did he do to gain the honor he was once held in? He was an accomplished military leader. He squelched a near-secessionist movement led by his own vice president. He greatly increased the role and influence of the average citizen (male white citizen) in the country's political process. Until recently, all or most of the bad things about him were ignored because many Americans of his time and later weren't much better.

Speaking as one of Jackson's closest living relatives - 1st cousin 8x removed, or technically 1/2 1st cousins since his father and my ancestor were half brothers; neither Jackson nor his brothers had direct descendants), I completely agree, and support the dismantling of monuments to him (though I can't vote toward that goal, as I am not American; my grandfather was). I am proud to add that my branch of the Jackson family were not slaveholders, but rather abolitionists.

40 People Who Seem Great, But Are Monsters Deep Inside Pablo Picasso was an unrelenting bastard to his romantic partners. He once said "for me there are two kinds of women: goddesses and doormats." And his granddaughter described his treatment of the women in his life by saying: "He submitted them to his animal sexuality, tamed them, bewitched them, ingested them, and crushed them onto his canvas. After he had spent many nights extracting their essence, once they were bled dry, he would dispose of them."

And that wasn't hyperbole, two of Picasso's partners suffered nervous breakdowns due to his emotional abuse. Worse yet his lover Marie-Thèrése Walter and his second wife Jacqueline Roque were driven to [self-harm].

Also, he claimed that he had wanted to be a bull fighter, but wasn't "brave" enough. Brave? Kill an animal that you can outsmart, outmove and pick another spear into, again and again? Always thought that requires being an AH, but no bravery whatsoever.

Whether a person tends to focus more on the negative or the positive aspects of someone else’s personality or behavior depends a lot on the context, Prof. Ferguson said; on whether or not the person is primed to be open-minded or suspicious in a particular context.

“For instance, a door-to-door salesperson might prime suspiciousness in a lot of people,” he pointed out. “But, particularly for Americans, our culture is to assume positives of those we meet in casual, non-threatening situations (which may differ from some European cultures).

“Thus we may give people we meet the ‘benefit of the doubt’ and be more easily taken in by charm,” the professor continued, adding that once attitudes form, they can be resistant to change so people may be hesitant to believe the worst of someone they just formed a positive opinion of.

More recently, he's been claiming that Hollywood is persecuting him for being a Christian, which is why he's decided to move his kids to Nevada. Are you the same person today that you were when you were 16? Should you have the dumbest most ignorant thought or action from your childhood held over your head for the rest of your life? FFS....People paint 25 year old women as children when they're dating older men, but a 16 year old male is meant to be considered a fully formed adult?

40 People Who Seem Great, But Are Monsters Deep Inside Lame answer, but my mother. She is known by a lot of people in town because she’s a teacher and is part of the theater scene, and people love her. Little do they know that behind closed doors she abuses the s**t out of her children. I ran away when I was 17 because I couldn’t take it, and despite giving the police a s**t ton of proof of what was happening, they couldn’t believe that she was capable of any of that and forced me to go back. Even after kicking me out a few months later while I was still a minor, almost no one thought she did anything wrong. The nicest people hide the darkest s**t ETA okay this was not what I was expecting. I’m reading all of your comments, and wow. I am so sorry that so many of us have dealt with this. I promise you it does get better over time As for me, I am doing better. The 11th is three years since cutting her off, and while my life is still really hard, it’s the happiest I’ve ever been.

In an interview with Bored Panda, another psychology expert, Dr. David Ludden, seconded the idea that shaking a first impression is difficult. “People quickly size up a person they've just met and decide on a quick, intuitive level that this new acquaintance is either good or bad. Once that assessment has been made, people interpret new information about that person in a way that is consistent with their first impression. It can be really hard to change someone's opinion about you after your first meeting with them. That's why first impressions are so important.”

40 People Who Seem Great, But Are Monsters Deep Inside Brett Favre. People finally figured it out after the welfare thing but he's always been scum. I went to USM (his alma mater) as well as my parents who were there at the same time he was, and every story I heard from locals about him was about him blowing off charity events that he was paid for and smacking his girlfriend in public back in his college days. Apparently he used to get his a*s beat by the locals when they'd see it but he was well into his NFL career before that stopped happening publicly. The man is a menace but people hear that South Mississippi accent and assume he's a nice guy. Also, just because I feel like there aren't enough people saying it, f**k Michael Vick and anyone who still let's him have any kind of public life.

Favre is, Vick is not. One beats women, was a legendary pill addict, and blows off charity events. One ran a dog fighting organization, got 23 months in prison and for some reason, has a commentating job for the NFL. There are rancid humans on both sides.

She should be much higher on the list. Her interview with Dolly Parton was likewise disgusting. She just kept going for the jugular with no trigger and without even a reaction from Dolly. Dolly kept being pure class, giving Walters no reason for behaving the way she did, and yet Walters just kept revealing herself as being bitter and jealous and just nasty/ classist.

How about the Monica Lewinski interview? Lewisnki essentially admitted that she told Linda Tripp that Clinton would probably have her killed, and that's why Tripp started recording the phone conversations... and Barbara Walters ignored the reveal and went on to discussing condom flavors.

According to Prof. Ferguson, it's important to remember that most people will actively try to hide their negative traits. “That's normal, and nothing to panic about,” he said. “But I suppose the main thing—when being drawn entirely into a person's orbit or worldview—is whether or not there is any possibility that they're profiting from some degree of insincerity and is it making us prone to ignoring some information that should throw up some red flags. There [has to be] a careful balance between being naive and overly suspicious.”

We know about Lennon's abusive past because he openly discussed it in his lyrics and interviews. He transformed from an angry working-class boy into a feminist adult. If anything, he should be seen as a positive example of recognizing and changing toxic behaviors. If you’d rather focus on the tabloid aspects of his life instead of his art, at least be aware of his timeline and progress.

Haven't you noticed that most people advocating for systemic change often benefit from the system? Do you think it's hypocritical to fight against homelessness and poverty if I have an above-average income? Shouldn't I still fight sexism and misogyny even if I'm a man? The economic and political elites want us to shame each other for our individual choices and purchases, but in reality, only a systemic approach can change our society for the better. Pointing fingers at each other only preserves the current system, although it may make you feel better about yourself without posing a real threat to the status quo.

Remember, John's father abandoned him, and his mother sent him to live with her sister Mimi -- which was probably a good thing, since Mimi was the only point of stability in his young life. Then his mother died in a traffic accident when he was 14. That's enough to cause major mental trauma in anyone.

Yeah....when he was a 23 year old with a wife and a kid while dealing with all that baggage that comes from being thrust into the spotlight of "biggest star in the world" while also suffering from various mental health issues at a point in time that things like that were not acknowledged, let alone discussed....which led him to self medicate, and into addiction. People aren't all good or all bad....they're flawed, complex.....and capable of growth. It's childish idiocy to attempt to reduce anyone to the worst thing they've ever done, more so to ignore the progress they've made to address their issues. You condemn the act, not the person....because the reality is, that while you eagerly pass judgement on someone whose circumstances you know nothing about, there is someone else, doing exactly the same thing to YOU likely more than one...in fact it's become somewhat of a problem in modern society. It's helping nothing and no one.

The post is pointing out the hypocrisy of being very vocal about nonviolence and then being violent to your family. But stop suggesting people get a pass for a pattern of abuse because of mental health issues. This didn't happen because he was psychotic, this happened because he didnt respect his wife and child.

I know it is hard to believe (like racial segregation and homosexuality being criminal) but men hitting women was considered much more acceptable than it is today. You don't have to look far into the past to see men slapping "hysterical" women in movies. This is not to excuse Lennon, but he did acknowledge his fault and tried to learn and change himself.

That level of ego is gross all on its own, but add the rest of his personality & yowza! No thanks.

Prof. Ludden suggested that the people who could be considered monsters might charm you. “But at the same time, you may get an uneasy feeling about the person,” he added. “Don't dismiss this feeling just because you really want to like this person. You may be picking up on subtle body language cues letting you know this person is not to be trusted.

“I'm also not saying that you should never trust other people. But it is much better to build that trust on an honest, objective assessment of the person rather than a superficial first impression and the halo effect.”

There was a blind going around at the time that Will Smith was suffering from addiction and various other issues, it was suggested that he needed a blow up in public to give him the excuse to go to rehab, in the hope it would be less damaging to his image and career. True or not, who knows, but if it is they vastly underestimated the fallout.

I don't completely fault Will for the slap tho. He was laughing at the joke, then Jada gave him "the look." Is a look that anyone who has been in a toxic, abusive, narcissistic relationship knows all too well. And the thing is, I doubt Jada cared about the joke, she cared that Will laughed at it.

Jackie Chan. He confesses a lot in his book (without realizing how much of an a*****e he is, I guess?), abusing his toddler son, etc etc.

And THEN on top of that he's a shill for the CCP. Says s**t like "Chinese people don't deserve freedom". He's from Hong Kong, which is probably a double slap in the face. Even a lot of mainland Chinese people know what the CCP is, but they can't necessarily escape. He's an international star, and decides to say what he does.

I read a biography about Jackie Chan 20 years ago, and I have to say that unless you come from the culture he was raised in, being acceptably normal and decent wouldn't be accepted in the fighting tooth and nail environmental he was raised in. I am concerned by the return of the idea of voting for 'strong men': charismatic, authoritatian, populists who create a base by demonizing whole population. They convince their supporters that they are 'victims' who are suffering from the secret machinations of these 'enemy' groups and only the Strong Man can help them. Not only are these Strong Men corrupt, but also it also sows unnecessary division and hostility within a country. All to gain power.

The Juice Media on YouTube did a good video recently about the state of democracy in the various countries holding elections this year, including mentioning the things Modi's government have done which threaten democracy in India. The Indian government got YouTube to block it in India as they said it was violating the "Prevention of Insults to National Honour" act 🙄

40 People Who Seem Great, But Are Monsters Deep Inside Oh, yall don't know him but my dad. Absolute scumbag. He's extremely well respected in his field and all of his family adores him. I was a secret child he hid for years. When I was assaulted he blamed me. He made his children lie to their own family about their secret sibling, and he literally sabotaged my career in my 20s. I only found success when I finally went no contact.

I’ve never met my dad. I know nothing about him. He disappeared when my twin and I were babies and never paid my mom the child support he owed. Apparently he’s still alive because recently he tried to apply for a government pension and my country’s government said AHA! THERE YOU ARE! and made him pay my mom a bunch of money lol. I don’t know how he avoided getting caught for so many years, but that’s the story I’m being told by my mom with very few other details. What a dumb guy though.

I don’t understand this. Any venture capitalist is risking their own money, so they deserve a decent return on the investment. Maybe some people automatically hate them because they are rich, but they have helped a lot of companies succeed that couldn’t have made it without advise and financial backing.

My ex-best friend. We were close like sisters. She started living with my fiancé and I. She then started sleeping with my fiancé behind my back and would say stuff like, “sometimes I forget you’re in a relationship.” I of course broke up with my fiancé and ended my friendship with my best friend. They left together and dated for a couple of months before he moved on to the next girl. In the meantime, my ex-friend turned many of our mutual friends against me because I wouldn’t forgive her and she now felt really bad about what she did. She’s an a*****e. Our mutual friends still think she’s great. At least I figured out who my real friends are.

Lyndon B. Johnson, I find it hard to believe he is being lionized by the descendants of the people who hated him so much. He was responsible for the deaths of 55,000 Americans and millions in SE Asia, he looked us in the eye and lied about the Gulf of Tonkin incident so he could widen the war to fatten his friends. Now people say "oh but his domestic policy, he gave us Medicare and Headstart", how cheaply he bought you out, he was a war criminal who killed a lot of my friends.

yes, they don't seem to understand what the Pentagon Papers proved, that Presidents since FDR had been planning on invading Vietnam it just happened on LBJ's watch. I'm in no way excusing his massive mistake but he did try to NEGOTIATE FOR PEACE in N Vietnam by April 1968 (right after the Tet Offensive) but it was his CIA, candidate Nixon, Kissinger & Chennault that blocked peace by making a secret pact with the Dictator S Vietnam president we installed to prevent N Vietnam from negotiating with LBJ/Dems with their hoped-for peace by Nov 1968. As soon as Nixon was elected the block was "lifted" so NIXON kept us in Vietnam for 5 more Hamburger Hill Years for absolutely nothing.

LBJ was complicated. Personally he was a flaming racist. But he went against his own feelings & members of his own party to make sure the Civil Rights Amendment passed. His biggest opponent of getting that pass was GOP Senator Barry Goldwater. He was a racist & misogynist. In 2016 one of his former interns described how exciting & rewarding the work she did for Barry Goldwater back then. She got all kinds of applause for that statement from the ignorant masses. That intern was Hillary Rodham Clinton & she said it at the 2016 DNC. Morns cheered for her.

all presidents are egomaniacs, if it hadn't been for South Asia nightmare, he would be remembered as the most progressive politician in our history. I am not excusing his record on policing or Vietnam but his leadership in other areas was UNMATCHED. Without Johnson, we would never have gotten Civil Rights legislation, medicare, medicaid, OSHA, or the most liberal civil rights SCOTUS ever. Nixon/Reagan took that court in the opposite direction with 9 Right-to-far-right Justices permanently by 1986. That's why we have REGRESSED so much in the last 50 years.

Vietnam was a big mistake that tore him up. It's why he resigned. His advisors really deserve more blame. At the time it was called 'McNamara's War.' That guy was a real warmonger, always wanting more and bigger war, kind of like today and certain politicians regarding Ukraine. The biggest single step forward for the civil rights movement - ever - was the Civil Rights Act of 1965, which LBJ forced through Congress. (edited to correct the year)

People have also started to speak up about his bad behavior on set, being late all the time and rude to crew members.

40 People Who Seem Great, But Are Monsters Deep Inside John Harvey Kellogg (the cereal guy) was a real piece of work.

TLDR; John Harvey Kellog was the cook, and his brother was the industrialist.
As far as I can remember, the insane brother invented the cereal. The sane brother invented the factory process of making them, and had the idea to cover them in sugar (frosted flakes).
The insane Kellog believed that the default state of man was an apathetic unfeeling void and anything that caused excitement such as good food, warm baths, obviously intercourse for anything other than procreation, was sinful and against God's design. I believe he was also a proponent of yoghurt enemas, which HAS to be a fetish thing, right?

Actually, Kellogg was opposed to masturbation, not at all to actual sex. Pretty damned libertine for his day, in fact. And while his sect was more than a little kooky (7th-Day Adventists are insanely conspiracy-minded and heretical), it's not clear that his diet was strictly based on his religious beliefs; he was trying to cure indigestion, which was actually a major problem in his day. And while his solution caused more problems than it cured (corn made more easily digested by high temperatures causes insulin bounces), it was actually successful.

This excuse of a person was truly horrible. If he caught a young boy or girl masterbating he would cut, yes cut, off their clit or the boys foreskin as punishment and so they couldn't do it again. Also, it's been said he took the excrement from the kids or maybe himself and would keep it and analyze it. He was bonkers and a controlling POS

I can't speak to what fetishes he had but it seems like there is some science to the yogurt enemas. I don't do that, but yogurt is marketed as (among other things) having probiotics that improve your gut / intestinal health. Most people eat it rather than shove it up their a*s but either way the idea is introducing favorable bacteria to your intestines. I take my probiotics in a capsule (which I don't shove up my butt) and they have helped me.

I don't want people exposed to the word suicide because it might inspire them to do it.' It amounts to looking down on others. I'm ok because I'm smart, but other people are too stupid to handle it.

Maybe karma got the best of him in the end. He refused to allow most of his books to be made into movies as he hated what "Hollywood" did to the ones he allowed. He also never allowed his characters to be used for merchandising (toys, T-shirts, etc). After his death, his second wife completely sold him out. She made as much money as she could from all of his work. Movies, dog toys, diapers - she sold the rights to anyone she could.

It doesn't make sense to call "it" [self-harm]. When I bump my toe it's self-harm. When I end my life, it's self-murder also known as suicide or taking my own life. This way it's censored into a paper-cut or a burn.

No one's mentioning his Japanese 'fifth column' cartoon, accusing Japanese Americans - who I read in some book were so loyal that an *actual Japanese spy* didn't even try to recruit among them - of being loyal to Japan, the Enemy, and thus worthy of internment?

I think Eddie Murphy #1. Most think he's a cool guy but heard story after story he's mean, hateful, and downright terrible to people. JLo is mean many stories about her getting people fired and so forth for trivial reasons and belittling the help. Yet she is fairly popular most think she's a decent person. I am not calling her a monster but most think Jamie Lee Curtis is super cool and would be nice as hell but heard she is actually a snob and cold in person. Which surprised me.

Eddie Murphy had a child with one of the Spice Girls and let's say he didn't fit in the parenting shoes. No one touches my queen JLC! l don't know if she's snob and frankly, l don't care, because she's been an example on how to support your transitioning child. And that alone makes her a good person in my books. Plus she's great at comedy.

40 People Who Seem Great, But Are Monsters Deep Inside Anne Sullivan, AKA Teacher. Despite helping Helen Keller rise above her disabilities, it's well-documented that she often beat Helen (as a means of disciplining her when she was still a "wild" feral child), and colluded with the Kellers in preventing Helen from marrying the man she loved.

Beating children was considered normal at that time. I won't advocate for doing it, but other than today, back then, you were basically taught what was right by people just as clueless as you, and we tend to believe that something that happens all around us must be somehow ok'ish, at least not wrong. Remember, deviating from your peers is what takes effort, often bravery, not fitting in.

Lots of people chose not to beat the s**t out of their kids back then too. Please don't give abusers a pass cause "everyone did it". If that were the rule then it would still be okay for men to sexually harass everywhere. Society has changed and it's okay to judge those people for being s****y.

I never heard about that. What i do know is that Helen Keller hated being the " see, if she can do it, so can you" .She acknowledged that her parents had enough money to hire a teacher. ETA: so apparently she belived in euthanasia for *severly* disabled kids. She also belived in birth control, which was being touted as " eugenics" when what the advocats we saying is the poor were having enough trouble as it was, why should they have more kids ? This is because she was a socialist and they believed that companies just wanted more workers, especially from the poor people because then they would work cheap.

Jolie comes across as a nutbag. She seems to want. And she gets. No second thoughts for who she tramples on. I believe Brad did lose his temper, he was (I think) having alcohol issues. But he owns up to it. And bettered himself from it. She doesn't have that self-insight which ishy she seems detestful.

Alexander Graham Bell. Wanted to eradicate deaf people. Tried to ban ASL. Also he didn’t invent the telephone, it was really an Italian guy. 🤷‍♀️.

oh get it right! He did not want to eradicate deaf people but deafness. His wife was deaf which is why he started working on the telephone in the first place - to help her and other deaf people. He was a proponent of oralism, but that was seen as advanced for the time and fought for the education of deaf children who were excluded at the time. And as for Antonio Meucci - the invention of the phone is a complex affair so it was not just ' an Italian guy' -actually Italian American but we'll skip that.

Bell made the first ever phone call though, so regardless of who had the idea first, it isn't a successful invention until it's a full working model. Also, Bell's wife and mother were deaf and he discouraged the use of sign language, but in his head he probably thought he was empowering deaf people to live 'normally.' Those were different times and people did not celebrate disabilities back then.

Having worked with Deaf children and speaking sign language I can say that eradicating deafness = eradicating the Deaf, as it is their identity to be deaf. That is the point of view of the Deaf. Moreover, in 1880 when the Congress of Milan took place, the only country to go against the general opinion that Deaf shouldn't speak sign language but oralise instead was the US. Bell's opinion did not align with the US ' opinion. As a result, the US were way more advanced about the education thanks to ASL ! and the welfare of deaf people contrarily to European countries who imposed oralism on the Deaf. As a matter of fact it started the "dark age of the Deaf" with an "awakening (le réveil sourd") at least in France in 1984 when Alfredo Corrado , a deaf costumier from the Opera in NY came to Paris. He was supposed to stay a few months but remained there the rest of his life to help the French deaf community to develop French sign language and education with the IVT.
