They say the higher you fly, the harder you fall. For a celebrity, an illustrious career can go in shambles in one fell swoop, whether from a scandal or their own doing.

These big names are just some examples. Their stories can make you think a lot about the price of fame and how being in the limelight can feel lonely, despite the fortune and recognition.

The responses you’re about to read were from various Reddit threads, asking which celebrity figure has the worst and saddest fall from grace story of all time.

#1

Portrait of an older man in a gray Temple hoodie, representing celebrities whose careers crashed and never recovered. Bill Cosby. It’s hard to overstate how much he was loved in the late 80s early 90s.

legthief:

Absolutely - the temptation is to answer this thread with Sean Combs, due to his continuing fame, his billions, and his business networks and empire, but he was already kind of an obnoxious and dividing pop culture figure before his outing and arrest, whereas Cosby was for decades unironically labelled 'America's Dad" by much of mainstream media.

Kind-Passenger-3935:

Lots of celebrities have fallen but none so far as him. He went from being America’s Dad to a pathetic old washed up unmasked predator. When Ennis was murdered the entire COUNTRY rallied around his family and felt awful for them. While I still have empathy for everyone else, knowing what he was doing to other people’s kids takes any empathy I have for him as a father who lost a child.

The problem with that Eye for an Eye attitude is that you would need to find someone willing to do that. That would also be a person who belongs in prison.

My mother worked with him back in the ‘80s. I worked in a casino he would perform at in the ‘90s. People knew he was a bit pervy. My mother said they women she worked with knew not to hang out alone with him. Not that they suspected that they thought he’d dru g, as sault, or ra pe them, but that thought wasn’t out of the question. In the ‘80s some men with power wouldn’t take no at least the first few rejections, for an answer and a drunk yes was as good as a sober one and rap ist tried to say clothing equated to consent. (I’d like to think things are better but I don’t think so?) She said that Cosby had reputation as being a bit sleazy in public and worse in private.

FYI, it WAS PUBICALLY KNOWN IN THE MEDIA that he was doing that IN THE 80's, but no one cared back then. My parents threw away all his comedy records, and I was told I wasnt allowed to watch his shows or commercials, before the 90-s even hit.

I remember WAY back when, long before all the insanity, in the early 2000s, I liked his song "Roses" (which talks about visiting his grandma in the hospital.) I thought he was a genuine person, and I felt sad when his mom díed due to terrible plastic surgery (2007.) And then it turned out that he is absolutely insane and he deceived us all, so to speak, into thinking he was an actual human being when in fact he's a collection of issues, narcissism, and a-holeishness all mixed into a bag.

Oscar is a South African athlete who shamelessly used his "fear" of being home invaded to k!ll his girlfriend. If you believe his side, he didn't even check if she was in bed before he got out of bed, grabbed his gun and shot her (thought she was a burglar) in the toilet cubicle of the bathroom. I've watched the documentary on him (in "How It Really Happened" - very good series) and I'm not convinced he's innocent.

Never did like her, watched the show like once, but found her too fake. She was trying too hard to be likable, and it reminded me that every person I know who generously give mass gifts for no apparent reason were hiding horrible personal reasons. I think of big bags of plush for low-income kids, so the person can find kids to m0lest, or because they just scammed a partner and wanted to look "nice" before the cops were called. Ive got several more, from personal experience, but all of them were just like her.

Without the help of powerful people, he wouldn't have been able to keep it all a secret. It seems like a lot of people knew what he was, and either they were like him, or they knew everything and did nothing.

    #13

Michael Jackson in a black embellished jacket at an event, representing celebrities whose careers crashed and never recovered. Without a doubt, Michael Jackson.

    **The King of Pop**

People may look back on him favorably now, but many don't remember exactly how big he was.

This guy had a *life long* career in music, from a child to his [funeral]. He appeared in movies, he had his own movie, he had his own video games. His music spanned multiple genres, and shattered records.

This man, was the biggest thing since the Beatles. He met world leaders like they were his posse, shook the hands of multiple presidents. Michael Jackson stepping off a plane in your country was as big a deal as the Pope, and he handled it with the same humility of a single sequined glove wave.

And the man *loved* charity. Where humanitarian causes went, he followed, and the world followed with him. Celebrities lined up to be a part of the Michael Jackson freight train. Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Slash, and more.

They were going to build a giant, mechanized statue of Michael Jackson in the Nevada desert. Not ironically, not for a festival, just because he was the singular most amazing performer of the generation.

And what did he do in his spare time? He visited sick kids in hospitals. He lent his voice, his time, and his money to numerous charities and was unafraid to take a stance on racial tension; he was a champion of equality.

Need more proof that this man was easily as big as Elvis? Here's an excerpt from his Wiki page:

    > Jackson's 1982 album Thriller is the best selling album of all time. His other albums, including Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995), also rank among the world's best selling albums. Jackson is one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Dance Hall of Fame as the first and only dancer from pop and rock music. His other achievements include multiple Guinness World Records; 13 Grammy Awards as well as the Grammy Legend Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award; 26 American Music Awards, more than any other artist, including the "Artist of the Century" and "Artist of the 1980s"; 13 number-one singles in the United States in his solo career, more than any other male artist in the Hot 100 era; and the estimated sale of over 400 million records worldwide.[Note 1] Jackson has won hundreds of awards, making him the most awarded recording artist in the history of popular music.[6] Jackson became the first artist in history to have a top ten single in the Billboard Hot 100 in five different decades when "Love Never Felt So Good" reached number nine on May 21, 2014.[7] Jackson traveled the world attending events honoring his humanitarianism and in 2000, the Guinness World Records recognized him for supporting 39 charities, more than any other entertainer.[8]

... but in the 90s, accusations soured the public on Jackson. His visibility plummeted, and as his apparent medical issues regarding his appearance spiraled out of control, questionable relationship choices and further accusations seemed to make everyone take a big step away from associating with Michael.

He [passed] effectively alone, as a result of a heart attack caused by the mishandling of medications by his personal doctor.

It's incredible. I can't think of anyone else who was as famous, *internationally*, and then faded into obscurity and hazy memories of better times.

He fell so hard, ~~people in this thread~~ *some people* barely remember him. But I always will.

    PresidentDonnyTrump:

Michael Jackson. King of pop to the ultimate crash and burn.

I have to admit, and maybe people more au fait with US law/culture can help me here... why is it that Michael Jackson was found not guilty and essentially got back to doing whatever it was he was doing prior to his court case, whereas, say, Kevin Spacey is still banished to the depths of the underworld? Both were found not guilty in a court of law. So, what's the difference? (I'm not trying to start a war etc. I'm genuinely curious). Is it because Spacey admitted to being 'handsy' even though he pleaded not guilty? Is it because people allowed Jackson leeway because of his childhood to have kids over to play and sleep in the same bed with him? I expect downvoters to have a field day here, but I'd really like to hear what others think, because I've never understood this.

I'm not convinced he was a p3dophile the way we think of it. I full believe the theory that he was chemically castrated so he wouldn't lose his high voice. I think this made him a perpetual child mentally or emotionally despite his physical age. And children gravitate to other children. So when/if he did inappropriate things with kids, it's because they were the only people he could relate to. He had a horrible childhood (his brothers would have s3x with groupies right in front of him before he'd even hit puberty) and I don't think he grew up to be in any way "normal".

He was, without a doubt, a phenomenal entertainer and showman. I witnessed his rise and grew up within his sphere of entertainment influence. But there's no doubt in my mind that he was a severely mentally-troubled person who never sought treatment which he obviously was in need of.

I'm not excusing it but the was his 1st cousin once removed and they married in Mississippi (USA) when she was 13 and he was 22 which was legal then. In Mississippi today you must be 21 without parental consent. With parental consent males can marry at 17+ and females can marry at 15+ can marry. Some sources suggest, today in Mississippi, minors under these ages might can marry with parental consent and court order if "special circumstances" such as if a pregnancy exist. It's not totally clear cut. 34 U.S. states still allow individuals under the age of 18 to marry under certain circumstances, usually with parental or judicial consent; the other 16 states and Washington, D.C., have banned child marriage entirely, setting the minimum marriage age at 18 without exception. Many state legislature members (mostly old white men, argue that minor children should be able to marry is there is a pregnancy.

I don't see a lot of people, especially men (especially white men), having the integrity to admit they were wrong. He messed up. He at least provided a decent example of taking responsibility.

Just because he apologized and made amends does not mean that people have to forgive him or pretend it didn't happen, though. I agree that apologizing and making amends to those you hurt and those you do wrong against is necessary, but the person/people you wronged are under no obligation to forgive you and forget just because you said you're sorry. His apology didn't fix what happened to his reputation and peoples' perception of him.

For a English Lord Jeffrey Archer takes some beating.

Deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, resigned due to his lust for call girls. Sues the newspaper for liable, wins £500,000 (1987 pounds)

Set up a charity for The Kurds, claimed it raised £57,000,000. Only raised £3.000.000 ( rest came from goverment and other sources)

Shoplifted some very nice shirts and a suit while in Canada

Insider trading - In January 1994, Mary Archer, then a director of Anglia Television, attended a directors' meeting at which an impending takeover of Anglia Television by MAI, which owned Meridian Broadcasting, was discussed.[36] The following day, Jeffrey Archer bought 50,000 shares in Anglia Television

Ran for Lord Mayor of London, his friends turned him in about lying to a Liable jury, got 4 years in the pokey, had to pay a fortune in compensation

The African coup attempt ( with Mark Thatcher ) Simon Mann, jailed in Equatorial Guinea but released on humanitarian grounds later, for his role in leading the failed 2004 coup d'état told The Daily Telegraph that his forthcoming book, Cry Havoc, would reveal "the financial involvement of a controversial and internationally famous member of the British House of Lords in the plot, backed up by banking records." He claimed documents from the bank accounts in Guernsey of two companies Mann used as vehicles for organising the coup, showed a 'J H Archer' paying $135,000 into one of the firms.

He has been begged to resign from the House of Lords, he has refused and stuck to his guns, he was suspended from Marylebone Cricket Club for seven years, but the House of Lords cant kick him out.

Honestly watch this guy. I bet there is another chapter in this mans life.

An incredible liar and deceptionist. It turned out that almost everything in his claimed CV was a lie. I don't think he even has any remorse at all. Named after him is "An Archer" which is a 'suitable amount of money to bribe someone'. This is in reference to the prostitute he bribed to leave the country so she couldn't be a witness at one of his trials (yes, there were many!). An absolute rogue, but still respected in some circles! He has resigned from the House of Lords, but never actually attended anyway.

Three celebrities wearing leather jackets and glasses, posing with thumbs up at an event on careers crashed and never recovered. Milli Vanilli. They won a Grammy and were super popular and several hit songs. A lip syncing incident happens and it comes out that they didn't actually sing on the record. They become laughingstocks, lose their Grammy, and never regain any popularity. Just as they decide to do stuff on their own, one of their singers goes to jail.

What I don't get is why they were blamed when it was the producer (Frank Farian) who was responsible. Farian was also the producer of Boney M's music, and of the four members, only two (Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett) actually sang. Farian sang the male part that was lip-synched by Bobby Farrell (although Farrell did sing during live performances). And yet Boney M is still a beloved group in Europe and South Africa (you can't go one Christmas without hearing them being played in malls and supermarkets). I think the hate for the two men in Milli Vanilli was ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure the only people that discuss Mel Gibson are Matt Stone, Trey Parker, and RDJ. Otherwise he's near shunned. He was in Machete Kills, Get the Gringo, and the Expendables 3. I've seen all three. Get the Gringo and Machete are fun. The roles aren't all that big outside of Gringo. He doesn't have much room to get back into mainstream Hollywood and he didn't get any reprieve for the [things]he said. Even Gary Oldman who defended Gibson was just a kook. Lindsay Lohan has Oprah. RDJ had the willpower to overcome his [things]. Gibson is a ghost in entertainment now and he used to be a great actor and director.

I was 13 at the time XD Later on when I took a "History of the British Isles" class in college, I did my finals paper on Braveheart and its complete lack of accuracy. I remember my teacher (who was a Scottish expat) was especially amused by me pointing out that William Wallace wouldn't have such shiny clean perfect white teeth XD But yeah, I loved Braveheart........ when I was a child XD I also thought Gibson was great in all of the Lethal Weapon movies and Mad Max... again, when I was a child XD I think The Patriot was the last movie with him in it where I thought he was a great actor. After that I realized wait... wait... no, this man is just bizarre.

I ask myself the same thing sometimes. I love his books. I have quite a few Sandman comics. I ask myself the same thing whenever something like this happens. Usually the same thing happens to me - my brain simply cannot divorce the artist from their works, and I cannot help but think of the author when I read the book (in this case.) I haven't re-read any of his books since and I kind of get "the ick" (as the kids say) when I think about doing so. (Similar but sideways thing for Elon Muskmelon - I used to have a gorgeous poster of one of the SpaceX rockets on my wall in my hallway - took it down because I could not help but think about what a shíte person Elon is every time I saw that rocket.)

Investigations have been dropped, and the accusations I can find are, I quote: "seven out of the eight women interviewed for the story told New York writer Lila Shapiro that they had no interest in B**M but at some point played along". Sorry, but if as an adult you feel bad later on that you had agreed on something, it was still agreement. That doesn't make it r**e or a*****t.

Legally you aren't quite correct. If you withdraw your consent, then that's as good as saying 'no' from the get-go. Obviously, it depends on the particular incidents and whether consent was actually explicitly withdrawn, as opposed to the women feeling uncomfortable but letting what was happening continue, but yeah. Just an FYI 😊

I loved SpaceX because I'm an 80s/90s child and never fully recovered, emotionally, from NASA/the US kílling off the Space Shuttle program. I thought we'd never go back to space/progress in space travel in my lifetime. I remember being so excited watching videos of the Falcon rockets landing. I actually wept when they did the dual/simultaneous landing of the two Falcon Heavy boosters (2019 IIRC?) It was just so beautiful and I was so personally happy that humans were returning to space within my lifetime and my inner child-who-wants-to-be-an-astronaut was so pleased. And THEN it really started coming out publicly that Elon is the biggest dóuchebag to ever dóuche across the earth... and worse. I had been ignorant about it before, but when I started looking into him and his past.. yeah, he's always been awful.

Honestly, this is tame compared to some of the literal actual crimes/criminals on this list. Having an affair is reprehensible, but it's a moral and ethical issue, not a "breaking the law" thing. It's sad that I have to actually say something like "well, having an affair isn't AS bad as some of the others on this list...." I'm not saying he's a good person or that this is acceptable, but that it's (sadly) hilarious that it's one of the least offensive things on the list.

Right? Most of the public thought what happened was maybe amusing, but in no way dangerous - he wasn't in character, or causing a scene anywhere near children...the media made such a big deal out of it.

Yeah, him too. Somehow his scandal pushed the Cosby scandals aside about that time. He never should have been a children's performer with his comedy style. His adult stuff he does now is actually good, and since his past audience has reached a maturity level to handle his work, he's becoming more popular again.

I'm sorry, but Pee Wee and Mr. Bean are in the same grouping for me. These characters just give me the creeps (modern people would say the 'ick'). Characters that are grown men behaving as 'innocent' child-like characters is just a 'no' for me.

Also, the comment by tinklesbear is tacky and gross. "I felt so bad for the crazy girl"... she has mental health issues. She doesn't deserve to be branded 'crazy' for trying to deal with them. Obviously tinklesbear has lived a #blessed life in which they fart rainbows and unicorns and nothing ever goes wrong. (Not sarcasm, but I feel I need to apologise for the #blessed hashtag. Please stop calling people crazy for struggling with their mental health, it's just so nasty and judgemental. Most people will struggle with mental health issues at some point in their lives, it doesn't mean they're crazy, just struggling and in need of help.

I took the time to read her essay about "protecting women's spaces" and she actually wrote it really clearly and you could see what she was trying to say. But then she gave money to groups trying to make life difficult for trans people. She accused an Olympic athlete of being a man without any evidence. She's a garbage human.

J.K. Rowling publicly criticized Emma Watson for her stance on trans rights, calling her "ignorant" due to her wealth and fame, suggesting Watson doesn't understand women's issues without privilege. J.K. Rowling's oppression over growing up poor is keeping her from seeing or having empathy for trans people. It's classic.

Mark Speight - a popular kids TV presenter in Britain.

He worked on a number of TV shows and was pretty well recognised. One night, he and his girlfriend got wasted, drank a load of vodka, took a load of -illegal substances] and eventually sleeping pills. In the night, his gf poured herself a crazy hot bath, got in, passed out and [passed away] with 60% of her body covered in burns.

Speight woke up the next morning and informed the police what had happened. His show (SMart) was cancelled with immediate effect and he was investigated.

A coronor proved that he had no role in his gf's [passing], but Speight's career and life were over. A few months later he hung himself in a building opposite Paddington Station.

There was plenty I disagreed with John McCain on, but we was an honorable person. He worked across the aisle on campaign finance reform. "In 2008, John McCain defended Barack Obama during a town hall meeting, stating that Obama was a 'decent family man' and urging his supporters to stop spreading false claims about him, including accusations regarding his citizenship." I supported Obama but recalled thinking that I wouldn't be angry whichever way the election turned out - until Sarah Palin became the Republican candidate for vice president.
