i'm in a ltr with a lesbian trans woman who's one of the sweetest, gentlest people i've ever known. she has been s****************d and harassed by multiple straight white dudes simply BECAUSE she was trans. who's looking out for her, huh? nobody. they got off scot free. god bless america.
Immigrants are an easy target when talking about the issues within a community. Not enough jobs? Blame immigrants. Not enough school places? Blame immigrants. Crime too high? Guess who you can blame! When a community becomes disadvantaged, through whatever reason, tensions increase. Rather than tackle the root cause of the disadvantage (jobs, education, etc) it is easier to stoke those tensions for political gain.
It is a shame of course since immigrants create more jobs, reduce per-capita crime rates, and generally bring more money into a community. Even illegal immigrants are providing tax revenue, while not being able to collect on federal or state services. These are of course generalities. It's very easy to pick out exceptions to the rule in news stories.
Load More Replies...Not to out a damper but what percentage of the population or straight, trans, or immigrants.
This is true - but then the rightwing stats also need to be adapted. "80% of immigrants commit crimes" sounds horrible, until it turns out that 99% of these "crimes" are related to the immigration process and cannot be committed by US citizens, and that they are usual something like "handed it a form 1 day too late". -> This is what happened when similar stats in Germany were looked at.

White men have nearly wiped out the Indigenous Peoples, have wreaked horrendous crimes against Black people, and have continued to threaten, intimidate, and kiill immigrants. That doesn't include entire species of animals they gleefully brought to extinction. Based on past and present behavior, I think we can draw a conclusion what the problem is. And as long as they run the country, the courtrooms, corporations, and industries, I don't see their ruthlessness ending any time soon.
And it's all rooted in misogyny. From the monsters of ancient times, who were almost always coded female and represented the fears men held about women - their power, knowledge, hunger, desires, appearance, ambition.... you know, basically everything - to the modern fear of trans people, it's all thanks to misogyny. Fear of the "other" is the foundation of Western culture and this classification of trans individuals as "other" is compunded by the fear of the female. In MTF trans people, it's the fear that these men "abandoned" their masculinity to embrace feminity and, thus, "diminished" themselves. In FTM trans people, it's the fear that these women dared to throw aside their "duties" as walking wombs in order to usurp the power of men and dare to stand next to "true" men as equals. TL;Dr - men are fragile things terrified of women in all forms. (And, yes, I'm most certainly generalizing.)
It's a very underreported crime, and they don't even give a sample group, or really any info about their study. This post means nothing
Exactly. This is on a slightly different topic, but a few years ago some companies declared a bathroom policy stating that people could use the restroom that they identified with. People said that now men would come into the ladies's restroom and sexually a*****t them. I never heard of a single case where that happened.
Maybe straight white men make up the larger percentage of the population?
Imagine a religion that supports this kind of thinking! Imagine a third of the country electing someone who does this. Imagine a media station that promotes this! Oh, we don't have to imagine.

Society should be trying to do the least amount of work in the most efficient way to maximize free time. Capitalism doesn't want that. In the US we add inefficiencies to extract more money from our citizens. Taxes are a big one. The IRS could do most of it. No need for the middle men tax companies to extract money.
So true. Sometimes I wonder what people thing an economy is for. It's not just to generate wealth. It's to generate safe and abundant living conditions for as many people as possible. Until we can live inside a bank account and eat the money we find there, capitalism for it's own sake won't make any d**n sense at all.

This isn't a problem of capitalism. No book on capitalism says that people should be exploited. It's a problem of stupid people. By the way, it's more common to see people working for $10-20 a month under socialism.
I see this so often and yet where I live $25/hr still won't get any applicants. Ever since the plandemic, it's impossible to get anyone to work. It is NOT a pay issue, it's an issue of the government making leeches out of people who are more physically fit than most workers but are simply too lazy and too well paid to live off the taxpayers.
Capitalism, at its core, is an economic system where private individuals or businesses own most of the goods and services. People invest in companies, hire workers, and ideally, make a tidy profit. The workers, on the other hand, show up, put in hours, and get wages. But they don’t own what they work on; they just keep it running. It’s kind of like borrowing a kitchen to cook dinner, but not getting to keep the meal. That’s the basic structure of capitalism: owners call the shots, and workers keep it going.
What drives capitalism? One word: demand. The more people want something, the more companies rush to make it and cash in. It’s all about supply meeting that demand in a wild market dance. Unlike planned economies, where the government decides who gets what, here it’s more like survival of the most clever. And if someone finds a way to sell water in a rainstorm? Capitalism says, “Go for it!” It’s messy, unpredictable, and very human.

Load More Replies...Now, let’s be fair, capitalism has some solid perks. It gets things moving fast, encourages fresh ideas, and often lowers prices because of competition. If you’ve ever scored a cheap phone on sale, you can thank capitalism. It also has a knack for pushing people to invent and innovate. Wages and living standards tend to rise overall, at least in theory. When it works, it really works (until it doesn’t).
But oh, the cons. It tends to divide the world into “haves” and “have-nots” faster than you can say inequality. Big profits sometimes mean big pollution and corner-cutting. Workers might feel like cogs in a giant profit-making machine. Then there’s crony capitalism, where shady backroom deals start replacing fair competition.
This is the exact mindset of people who are anti-union. Instead of wanting everyone to make a good wage and benefits, they'd rather tear everyone down to live in misery.
That is the "American Dream" in a nutshell. It's not about making things better for yourself, just making sure that there are people worse off than you are.

A recent op/ed: Popular wisdom (at least those in the Conservative sector) is that Medicaid is a “poor people who don’t want to work” benefit. While somewhat true, let’s look at those “poor people.” While true that those who choose not to contribute to society are covered, that amount is quite small, and has been since the late 90s-early 2000s. The next category are those who either do not qualify through their employer, or whose premium costs are such that it makes little financial sense to enroll when eligible for Medicaid (those working near full/full time). If you work near full/full time, there is no reason you should not be covered by Medicaid and SNAP. You are paying into the same system you are drawing from. My wife and I had a conversation with a woman working a store checkout who wondered if the 40 pounds of chicken we bought (@ 50 cents pound) would be an acceptable expense for SNAP. We assured her it would, and that taxpayers would be thrilled with such an economic decision. The last category is those on SOc Sec/Soc Sec disability. They qualify for MediCARE, but their income also qualifies them for MediCAID. LEt your Reps and Sens know not to balance cost savings on the backs of already vulnerable people.
I will have paid into medicaid for 38 years now. So my kid deserves to access those benefits now that he is in hospice. I paid for them. They are not some benevolent grant from my overlords.

There are all kinds of capitalism floating around. Take oligarchic capitalism, where a few super-rich folks run both the economy and the government. It’s like Monopoly, but the board is rigged from the start.

My state in Australia has just reinstated the State Electricity Corporation because the decades without a publicly owned one have not been good.
I work for a public utility waste water, and we do an amazing job much much better than the private waste water plants in MN, we aren't worried about profits our goal is to protect the Mississippi river and keep our residents waste water flowing well. We are doing a big project to use our renewable resources from the waste water treatment process to produce green hydrogen. We need to increase the size of our solar array and possibly purchase a 3rd biogas generator. But Xcel energy are a bunch of d ick bags and won't give us an increase in our interconnection agreement because they are threatened by our public plants ability to control the means of our production when it comes to energy. If it was a public utility we would be working as partners to make this happen, instead we have a straight up enemy in Xcel energy.
My city's electrical and water are municipal owned. They fund any "profit" back into infrastructure and the city budget. In a recent year they added $125,000,000. 125 million to the city budget. Cant find an exact year.
I also live in a small public-power community. Most all the towns in the state are powered by the energy behemoth National Grid. Not only are our electric rates dramatically lower, our service is far more reliable. National Grid doesn't believe in tree maintenance as it takes away from shareholder profits. Outages don't affect their bottom line much, so they just don't care.

Sigh...and you people continue not to get it. In the before times, when gender dysphoria was treated as a psychiatric condition and not a political ideology....professional psychiatric care was a requirement. You needed to spend months or years in therapy before being granted hormones, you needed to spend YEARS living, presenting and identifying as your assumed s*x before being permitted to obtain surgical intervention. And no one had anything to say about it, did they? It's only when those checks and balances got removed, that people took issue. No longer did you need to be seeking any kind of treatment, only to make sounds with the largest hole in your head to be granted rights and access that others actually fought to achieve. When the mob began insisting that children know what's best for them, when teachers know better than parents and when legal steps were taken to FORCE parents into providing THEIR CHILD with interventions they did not support.
When s*x became meaningless in the face of "gender" When fully biological men, began being granted access to protected female spaces....domestic violence shelters, athletics, prisons, programs fought and designed to benefit women. When trans became an umbrella term that encompasses.....pretty much anything that falls outside of the traditional norm. When terms like gay and lesbian began to fall out of favor, replaced instead by "genital preference" And throughout it all the expectation continues to be that the only people worthy of consideration are those actively trying to make everyone else feel less than because they've dared to prioritize themselves, they've dared to acknowledge that the demands being proffered are UNFAIR, and HARMFUL to a group of people that is still treated as "marginalized" themselves. But no, every complaint, every criticism, is all elevated to phobia, hate and treated as equating to violence. The inability to acknowledge any of that, is why trump is in the WH

Is it possible that lack of access to healthcare could lead to an increases crisis of obesity? Certain treatments for obesity perhaps are not available to the average american, and therefore they end up in worse health. And because so much of our income is diverted to paying for healthcare, we have less left-over to make healthy choices in our diets, and because we are so overworked and over-stressed, we have more cortisol in our blood, which also leads to increased obesity. Or maybe, as you put it, I am confusing correlation with causation.

Ask what lessons we have for others, then what we can learn from them. That way we can all become better. And remember we are dealing with our equals - everywhere.
That's because the USA is, in many respects, a perverse form of capitalism. Profit above all else. That's the only rationale I can think of to justify putting high fructose corn syrup and seed oils in processed foods, knowing it's deleterious to the body, but more profitable. Or not allowing tort reform to cap how much an individual can sue for medical malpractice. This is what drives up insurance premiums for doctors/hospitals that then drives up insurance premiums for individuals and ultimately making may forgo insurance altogether. Why? Because the lawyers want more profit on these lawsuits. It's sickening when you think about this, the food industry producing products that are long term harmful that then requires the person to seek medical help that then gets prescribed a d**g. Food/Medical/Pharma, the triumvirate, actually desires an unhealthy America in order to thrive.
Corporate capitalism? That’s the version where giant companies dominate everything, from your grocery list to your social media feed. Everything from the ads you see to the cereal you eat is carefully orchestrated by mega-corps. Sometimes it feels like you’re living in a giant commercial. Spoiler: you are.
It makes sense. I am confused why people didn't figure this out sooner. The US does society all wrong. Capitalism needs to go the way of Feudalism.
As a teacher, I support this message. New idea...eliminate lobbying and dark money for politicians. Only allow professional politicians teachers' wages. You'll end up with less greedy, power hungry politicians and gain politicians who only do the job because they want to help society and make a difference. Term limits could also help, and eliminate the electoral college. Introduce a third party to eliminate this polarization. They want us divided as a People so they can continue their agenda and put their Party over the People. We need to be the UNITED States, not the DIVIDED States. And maybe, we could treat each other with respect and not force our personal views on each other. Allow everyone to live a happy life. Those that are racist or discriminating could promptly pull their heads out of their a55es. That might be how we could Make America GREAT for ONCE.
That works in a small population that hasn't painted themselves into a corner by having a massive military industrial complex.

Totally valid, although this is the collapse of the "British Empire" that we are living in. Rome's capital moved. Rome's political structure changed drastically over time from dictatorship, to republic, to empire.
There was a glorious 80 some odd years with 5 great emperors that ended with the death of Marcus Aurelius and the ascension of Commodus. They knew they were in decline. They talked about it frequently. Pretty much like we do. Most people were mostly powerless like we are as powerful men with strong armies warred for control of the empire. Every once in a while they'd get a Constantine or a Diocletian and things would get better and then they'd be back to Civil War and collapse.
I may be WAY off, but the fall was hastened by becoming a consumer nation and had others make their s**t.
They conquered the world and imported slaves by the millions. Small farmers sold their land to buy the gear to join the army and become wealthy (most did not). The families that bought the land were wealthy from plundering conquered lands and brought in slaves to farm. Slaves also worked in manufacturing, shipping, education, domestic services, and s*x trafficking. Every conquest made Rome more wealthy and the wealth was highly concentrated. This economic situation lasted for over 600 years.

Colder temperatures and volcanic activity decimated crops leading to famine, which weakened the people and made them more susceptible to diseases that spread. Entrepreneurial capitalism is the fun, scrappy cousin of the bunch. It celebrates dreamers, doers, and garage inventors who build empires from nothing. Think tech startups, lemonade stands, and Shark Tank pitches. It’s risky, chaotic, and a bit romanticized. But it keeps hope alive that anyone, anywhere, can hit it big. If you’ve got hustle, this is your playground.

I had a 1br house for $285/mo in 2001. Not kidding. It did mean I had to live in a really s****y town though.
Wow, I rented a 2 bdr apartment in 1999 for $1200/mo in high-rise in Washington DC. I just looked it up. Today that same apartment is $3900/mo. In 2001 I was living in Cairo, in a 1 bdr and I paid $200/mo if I remember correctly. Tricky since I wasn't paying in USD, I don't really remember that well what the conversion rates were.
Load More Replies...My first apartment in 1979 cost $195/month. Adjusting for inflation, that’s $858.96 in 2025 dollars. I just looked up apartments in the same city same neighborhood today. They’re charging a minimum of $1400/month. Nearly twice the adjusted amount, meaning that rents have risen at TWICE the inflation rate. I also looked up my hourly wage in 1979, which was a little above minimum wage (I was 19 and had NO bills), to find out what it’s worth today, adjusting for inflation. Guess what? It’s still only a little above minimum wage. Working full time at a job equivalent to the one I had in 1979—-and only looking at my net, and not gross, pay—-in 2025 it would take about 77% of my salary just to make rent living alone in my 1979 one bedroom, one bath apartment, whereas in 1979 it only took about 33%. Less than half as much as now. And the old farts wonder why the younger generation isn’t buying houses. Hell, how TF can they save up the down payment when their rent is eating up almost all their money? They’re basically paying the landlord’s mortgage, and the a*****e still raises the rent amount sky high every year.
A local development (Cadillac, Mich) just released the base lease for "middle class" apartments they are building..(975/mo for a studio). Yeah, that pretty much excludes anyone with an hourly wage.

It's hard to fool an educated, confident woman. But these qualities come with age, generally over 25 years.
Oh no, not “perhaps”. More like DEFINITELY. They cannot handle a woman being smarter and more successful than they are, even with the extra boost they’ve always gotten from being part of the boys’ club. Plus, they completely forget that she probably had to work ten times harder to get a tenth as far as a man with worse grades and fewer qualifications, so if she’s been successful, she’s had to truly struggle for it a lot more than a man would have to. But they don’t see that, they just see someone who has the means to just pack up and leave them anytime she wants, and that infuriates them. Too f*****g bad. Too f*****g sad. Sucks to be them.

And since people willfully don’t pay attention in their history classes, we end up making the same mistakes over and over, and end up in the same world of s**t every d**n time. Join, elect them out, and fight the injustice. United. United we stand, divided we fall? Sure so. But, that shouldn't make us prepare to fall less hurtful, but make us prepare to fight. First step: Unite. Workes among the world, raise your voice, raise your hand if need be, we're the strongest party to ever have been around. The rich organize themselves, don't worry about them, worry about you, your neighbour, your kids. Ever worked two shifts to make ends meet, to provide for your loved ones? The problem is the lack of due process in those proceedings. Somewhere in chapter one of "How to be a Dictator" you find this lesson for dealing with your opponents: Step#1, Find a group of people who are broadly disliked [gang members in this case] and strip them of their right to due process. Imprison them. Few people will complain because nobody likes gang members. Step#2, label anyone who is your political enemy as a gang member, they are then deprived of the due process necessary to prove they are NOT gang members. Your enemies unjustly rot in prison. This is why due process of law is vital to a functional democracy.

It would be far worse if the real SSA was as bad at math as the twitter user. The actual *error* rate is about 0.625% which, if you turn it into a regular number instead of a percentage, is 0.00625. The overpayment of $72 billion listed elsewhere is for a period of 7 years. That's about $10 billion per year, but about 2/3 gets recovered, so the real loss is roughly $3.5 billion per year or about $10.60 per US resident. The 2025 military budget is $2700 for every resident, and the various losses there are a bit more than 0.625%. Of course it would be nice to reduce the errors in all programs, but only moron would try to do it with a chainsaw.
In fairness, if you get an overpayment, and do nothing, you deserve the penalties. Same if Meemaw dies and you do not record it.

My uncle worked in military supplies acquisition. He said the fraud in that sector is massive compared to any fraud in Social Security. Why isn't trump and musk doing anything about that? Because it's their rich friends committing the fraud and getting richer off it.

Exactly. The US currently has no physical factories, engineers, designers, testers, line workers, support staff, logistics, resources, vendors, trade partners...and once we get all those things, we will produce things that Americans can't afford and other countries won't buy. But, hey, progress - right?
Load More Replies...After thirty years of companies sending manufacturing offshore to lower costs (because their supposed “profits” aren’t the result of selling more and better product, they’re merely the result of cost-cutting), throwing countless numbers of workers out of jobs and completely killing and gutting company towns all over the country? They think they’re going to easily bring it all back in one fell swoop? If they are, then they’re going to have to go through a complete 180 degree change in ethics, attitudes, and business practices to do it. American workers will not put up with the low paid sweatshop slave conditions that workers in the third world countries those companies set up factories in put up with. So they’ll have to get used to lower profit margins, because they won’t be able to cheat their American workers like they cheated their third world workers.
I already do! I moved to Beijing 4 years ago. Best decision ever. My style of living improved 10-fold because my cost of living was cut so significantly that I enjoy luxuries here that I couldn't afford in 'Merika and I can save towards my retirement plus send money monthly to my elderly parents in California & Texas (who can't afford a comfortable retirement due to expensive daily necessities). Granted, I earn more than local citizens but even my Chinese friends and co-workers make enough to live well and their parents (some of whom are only in their late 50s or 60s) get guaranteed monthly incomes. They also had a fire in their belly that led them to work harder and achieve their genius. Granted, some of them weren’t very good, but those who were good were amazing. That’s a drive that doesn’t exist when your belly is full and you’re shielded from suffering. No, not experiencing that kind of suffering means that their “art” will be mediocre at best, s**t at worst (and way more of it will be s**t than mediocre), and will only be bought by their rich friends and family, who have money to waste, more from just a show of support than from true appreciation of their artistic genius, which they don’t have.

Not to mention that, as long as they don’t cross paths or get in each other’s way, there’s a chance that no one dies. The bear is not 100% guaranteed to immediately k**l the woman, unless she provokes it, and she most likely won’t. It’s a survival instinct we have honed after millennia of living around men. Women are far more capable of peacefully coexisting with not just their own species, but other species as well, than men are. Men would immediately jump to trying to attack and k**l the bear, while women would look for ways to live peacefully alongside the bear.
