There's an old New Yorker cartoon where a group of people are mumbling "Uh-oh" around an injured person lying on the sidewalk. That's me. My ADHD is focused, like obsessively focused, on a project. Detail work is my specialty. Research? Bring it on! But a crisis? Count me out.

I think this is a perfect example of the broad spectrum of ADHD. I also love research projects, I could live down rabbit holes. But I'm also freakishly calm, effective, and efficient in a crisis.

Yeah, I definitely have ADHD as well as autism. It's SO painfully obvious by now. I'm either sitting around uselessly scrolling on my phone, or I'm rushing around efficiently getting twenty things done. There is no in between.

This is me. When everything is calm and quiet I get anxiety, when everything is chaotic and crazy I feel weirdly calm and relaxed. I think it's from growing up in a 4 bed, 1 bath house with 8 siblings and a dozen pets, you get used to constant noise and chaos

Check back with the doctor who prescribed it. You may need a different dose or a different med.

Just try them - maybe more than one type - under your doc's supervision. You can quit them cold turkey if needed - but double check that with your doctor.

Actually, PTSD. Misdiagnosed and treated with the wrong psychiatric meds for 4 decades. Because, you know, only soldiers got PTSD, so it's obviously bi-polar. Nah, I was in a war zone my first 17yrs of life. It's MFing PTSD!!!!

I was diagnosed at 72. I left school with four O levels but gained my Masters at 45. I built a career until went through a traumatic experience and decided to live the life I wanted without having to prove myself. After going to four different counsellors over the years, none of whom were able or interested to see further, I decided I was fundamentally flawed as a human being and accepted my fate. I only found out because I was forced to undertake a training session on how to recognise neurodivergence and help those with a condition. It was like being hit with a sledgehammer to my heart. I now realise there is nothing wrong with me, I just think differently and my mind works in wonderful ways.

Gods, I get this all the time. "But you're functioning just fine. You can't possibly be autistic/ADHD. It's not disabling for you." Right. At 50, I'm retired because I am burned out from the constant masking, walking on eggshells around everyone, trying to filter out the noise of WAY too much stimuli in my brain, the stress of Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria.

After all these years, I've found my twin. I buy clothes not based on style or color, but on texture. Sound? Not so much the volume, but the cacophony of various sounds. And I go ballistic if my hair is touching my face, ears. or neck. It's got to be either extremely short or pulled into a tight bun.

If you're at all on social media, you might've noticed a trend in the last couple of years or so where people like to attribute ADHD and autism symptoms to themselves. A 2024 survey by the Ohio State University revealed that 25% of adults in America suspect they have undiagnosed ADHD.

This trend of self-diagnosing can be worrying, but it isn't so surprising once we consider the history of diagnosing neurodivergent people.

Social psychologist Devon Price writes that self-diagnosis can be liberating, especially for women. In the past, the tools to diagnose autism and ADHD have been suspiciously male-centric. Price writes that they were "designed with young, white, cisgender male patients with visibly obvious symptoms in mind."

Because of memory problems, I binge shows. Finally got around to watching all 10 seasons of The Blacklist recently. I'll find out if a show is no longer airing, then settle down to watch it. Series that I was watching that were disrupted with the pandemic, then the strike, have too big a gap for me to return to with any understanding of events or relationships, so they're over for me.

Serious question here: I was into Harry Potter as a kid but lost interest when it became popular. I was into Linkin Park until they became popular. This has happened a LOT in my life. Is it because of adhd? I also found that I only start to listen to popmusic about 5 years after the band broke up or the artist died. I suppose it is somehow related to the "it's getting too popular for my taste"-feeling?

I read a lot. All sorts of stuff, but mainly scientific stuff. As soon as the article mentions something I'm not familiar with, I immediately do research, which leads me to something else that requires research. Anyhoo, an hour, or many more, later, I return to the original article. It's time-consuming.

Many patients with ADHD get misdiagnosed and dismissed because they don't fit that old criteria. One clue might be family members: since the disorder is genetic, people with neurospicy folks in their family tree are more likely to have the disorders, too.

Psychologist and clinical assistant professor in Ohio State’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Justin Barterian, PhD, explains how some adults might realize they have ADHD one it's been diagnosed to their children.

"There's definitely more awareness of how it can continue to affect folks into adulthood and a lot of people who are realizing, once their kids have been diagnosed, that they fit these symptoms as well, given that it's a genetic disorder."

Hierarchies in skill, not society, is what I believe. Naturally, when it comes to skill, you learn from a master, unless you're one of those self taught types. But when it comes to society, at least how it works these days, the hierarchy is the issue. The resources are distributed poorly to the point that despite having many empty houses, there are still those out there without homes against their will.

I used to work a film festival every year in the projection booth. One day, the boss-oid wrote "VIPs" next to one of the sets on the schedule. I wrote next to it, "Don't suck this set." And below it, "Ok to suck with this set." I genuinely detest the whole "There are VIPs, so let's be extra sharp." Shouldn't *everyone* get my best service? Some filmmakers were touring the booth, saw what I wrote, got my explanation, and we've been friends ever since. ;-)

You feel hyperactive sometimes? ADHD! You make impulse purchases online and regret them once the goods arrive? ADHD! This is something you might see on social media where people diagnose themselves and others with ADHD or autism without having proper credentials for it.

Dr. Barterian says it's okay to watch such videos and suspect you might be neurodivergent. He does, however, advise to get checked out by a proper psychologist, psychiatrist, or physician. They're most likely to give you the most reliable assessment, not strangers on TikTok and Instagram.

I don't get how some people can speak in a group for 20 minutes and have everyone's full attention. I try to speak and 90 seconds in everyone's drifting away like I don't exist. I swear I'm not saying anything that off the wall or failing to communicate. There's just something about us that the normies can't wrap their minds around.

The biggest problem with self-diagnosing is that people tend to look at an autism or ADHD diagnosis as a explanation for their poor job performance, feelings of overwhelm, and other disappointing and frustrating experiences which may just be a normal part of life.

"Often enough, it is fair to say, the everyday distress, role conflicts, and lifestyle issues that motivate the personal appropriation of these categories have little to do with a mental disorder," professor of Sociology Joseph E. Davis wrote for Psychology Today.

My brain is like this as well, and now my literal life/living situation is too XD I'm supposed to be cleaning up/cleaning out the house I've lived in for ~two decades. It contains my possessions from all FOUR decades of my life because my sister brought over and dumped all of my childhood stuff from my childhood house (next door.) I've been "cleaning" since October. I get sidetracked by the proverbial yo-yo at LEAST three times every day XD I am NOWHERE near finishing >_>; (the one thing I AM proud of is that I have - so far - 10 large boxes laid aside of stuff I am donating!)

Dude, I wish I would have had a diagnosis as a label while I was in school. ADHD and dyscalculia! I could have used my emotional and linguistic intelligence I had in spades to go somewhere, and make a difference. Instead I was just labeled “lazy, doesn’t apply herself, careless” and I couldn’t perform basic math because I “just didn’t want to do math” I excelled in everything else, but utterly failed at math, and no one thought to see if maybe there was a problem? Eventually I stopped excelling at anything at all.

Surprisingly, some experts believe that self-diagnosing can do good, too. Robert Chapman, a neurodivergent philosopher in the United Kingdom who specializes in disability theory, told the Los Angeles Times that psychology and psychiatry is rife with miscalculations and misdiagnoses. That doesn't mean that they're always wrong, but observing and trying to change one's behaviors after self-diagnosing can help some people reclaim power.

I'm just learning this about myself, and I'm almost 50. I always got good grades despite being constantly called out for spacing out during classes. I'm not hyperactive, so I wasn't disruptive. That means that I wasn't diagnosed until my late teens, and again because it wasn't so problematic it has gone untreated for most of my life. Horrible (how that bonds people I have no idea - talk about not encouraging tolerance!!). I refused at first but got persuaded against my better judgement. Anyway, the most 'popular' criticism I got was 'too open'. I then had to sit there trying not to cry for something I feel I can't really help, it's who I am. My boss the next day said she thought it had been a good day and I said 'I'm never ever doing anything like that ever again'.

The "if they don't look you in the eye while talking to you it's a big red flag" thing bothers me to no end. I look at people's nose tips or between their eyebrows to simulate eye contact so they won't think i'm lying or whatever neurotypical shît they think. Most of them don't seem to notice.

Ugh, but it's not just that. Too little eye contact is a "red flag" because it supposedly makes you seem shifty and untrustworthy, but too much eye contact is a "red flag" because then you're being creepy. It's the same inconsistent BS with most of these supposed red flags.

It seems like more and more "red flag" discussions are starting to take the same tone as the "why are you as a man" nonsense. Everything cannot be a red flag. You also can't just ignore any and all context and label someone as toxic based on a single harmless word or action.

This is the literal state of my house right now (which I was supposed to organize/clean/etc. starting in October of last year...) My mom (who lives next door) will come in, get p!ssed off at me, and will yell "I'm going to trip and break my neck on all this c**p on the floor!" You could always just, y'know, NOT come into my house and NOT walk around in it? XD But seriously, I'm supposed to be cleaning and organizing my four decades worth of c**p and it's piles, all piles, piles everywhere. *I* even trip sometimes, ngl XD

My wardrobes of clothes are like this. Disorganised mess with piles on the floor of them (the contents being out of sight don't help, my brain still itches!). I said to my husband, I need to take everything out and sort it into a sensible order. He said 'good idea, why don't you?' Um... Because I know I won't be able to do it all the way through and the mess will be worse for a long time as I'll get overwhelmed. He said he doesn't umderstand why I can't just do it. At least I know now it's the ADHD. To think, I used to consider him the weird one for just being able to DO something - start through to completion. Lucky sod!

ADHD people often have rejection sensitive dysphoria, which means when you experience severe emotional pain because of a failure or feeling rejected. Basically the ADHD brain can't regulate rejection related emotions and behaviors, making them much more intense.

Why does ADHD often is misdiagnosed, ignored, or overlooked in women? Mostly because they present symptoms a little bit differently. Generally, there are two types of ADHD: inattentiveness and impulsivity/hyperactivity. As ADHD often is diagnosed at an early age, in boys it presents as jumping around and getting in classmates' faces. Girls with ADHD, on the other hand, are social, energetic, and talkative.

One of my better therapists once remarked that I was addicted to chaos bc that's the environment I was raised in. Painful, but familiar chaos. Took being self-aware and a lot of persistence to find that calm is pretty cool to spend time in. For me, it requires isolation to maintain, broken up with conversation with one person daily. Pretty drastic, but it works for me.

This is why I'm cleaning/organizing my house XD 43 years of crud, stuff, junk, tchotchkes I knew that I *COULD NOT* live without when I saw them online, little figurines, plushies, and other pieces of cr@pola that I honestly stopped caring about as soon as I opened the box and put the figurine on a shelf. Then the figurine gets swept into a box, where it sits forgotten for years XD There are only a few items I own that I *truly* love and care about (besides my living things like my pets and my beloved plants/trees.) One is the stuffed German Shepherd I've had since I was 5 (his name is Chace.) Another one is my dad's ashes. A third is my long-gone old gray cat's collar. I think I could probably toss out all of my other possessions and not care, in the long run. But somehow, it's still difficult to do :(

When women don't get diagnosed at an early age, they often develop coping mechanisms and learn to mask their symptoms. They might overcompensate the symptoms mentioned above by working late during the night to compensate what they haven't finished during the work day. Friendships and romantic relationships might suffer too, as patients might be afraid to show their true selves.

There’s no such thing as a yes-or-no answer that applies in all situations, with no exceptions or caveats. It’s more like “on a scale of 1 to 10” or “always, most of the time, sometimes, rarely, or never.”

Variations of "Just get better" and "You could get better if you wanted to" were the most common! :D Similar things were also yelled at me when I was a teenager struggling with depression and su!cidal ideation, but luckily my dad was still around then and he snuck me out to see a therapist. It's amazing how quick certain people are to jump on the "Just do x" bandwagon. just_get_b...193adc.jpg just_get_better-687b459193adc.jpg

Any advice on how to discover who you are without the mask? Some things are obvious - I force myself to make eye contact with people, for example - but I worry that I might be doing a lot of masking still without even realizing it because I formed those habits as a survival mechanism at such a young age.

    Earonn -
    Community Member
4 months ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I can only speak for myself, but for me the difference is how it makes me feel. When I cope for a skill I don't have, I do the other person a favour. It's like bringing your partner flowers - yes, it costs you, but it's an act of love and makes you feel good. When I mask, the basic feeling behind it is not love, but fear - the fear of not being accepted, of being bullied again etc. pp. Good luck!

Both of my super smart (I know, I'm biased!) kids have ADD, boy and girl, and really struggled in school. Son went on to become a professional pilot (SO many unmedicated ADD/ADHD pilots!) Daughter refused to medicate for school for years and finally started as an adult and it helped so much! She's still got anxiety but she's finally pulling her life together. It's a tough disease to have. :(

I was "diagnosed" as a HPI before ADHD when I was 10 ,(and yes I know it's not a real thing) so my teachers and parents placed a HUGE amount of pressure on me. It's incredibly hard to hear that "we know you could do better" all the time when you're actually doing your f**k!ng best.

Yep, me too. My "tested" IQ was 142 or thereabouts when I was a little kid in the 80s. My mom pushed me into the GATE ("Gifted And Talented Education") program so fast. School was a nightmare. I was doing horribly, so my mother decided the "answer" was to pull me out of public school, force me into taking the GED, and forcing me to start college when I was 14. So not only am I now literally every stereotype of the "burned-out gifted child", I'm also very socially dysfunctional (never learned how to make friends with people my own age) and still struggling with my ADHD at age 43 XD All so my mom could brag that she was "raising a genius". Thanks, Mom!

This is more PTSD like than ADHD. ADHD is exhausting bc such simple things require so much concentration. Like trying to clean a house or do a project. And we have executive dysfunction telling us things are even harder than they actually are. So we never get started. Then sit around with all the stress of having a giant project hanging over our head.

I constantly forget to eat. My mom cannot fathom how I don't "notice" that I'm hungry. She's asked me before, "Doesn't it hurt?" Uh... no? Does it usually hurt when you don't eat for an entire day? I mean, I feel hunger, and my stomach growls, but it doesn't hurt, and generally my ADHD brain jumps to something/the next thing so fast that I barely notice when I AM feeling hunger.. XD

It's called interoception! The sense of your body state e.g. hungry, thirsty, need to pee. Neurodivergent people often have low interoception, though not necessarily the same level for each type of it (e.g. I will almost always notice hunger but almost never notice thirst). From personal experience I would say it also varies depending on your focus level. The more you are into something, the worse your interoception gets. Then eventually your brain resurfaces to the rest of the world and you realize you probably should have eaten something 6 hours ago.

How to relax my brain: keep it partially occupied by doing something fysical, then i can think, daydream clearly without overthinking or getting overwhelmed by too much, confusing emotions. To my surprise breathing exercises are fysical enough to work for me. Or keep it completely occupied by reading, puzzels, ballet dancing, writing.

I don't like the sadness of the adult. Plus i think these are stigmatising in general. Not all adhd teens need tutoring. And because of masking, not all adhd kids are fidgety. I'm now more fidgety (and happy) in my 30's than ever before.
