“What Is Actually Healthy But People Think It Is Not?” (30 Answers)
Interview With ExpertWith so many viral wellness trends and health information circulating online, it’s sometimes hard to keep track of what’s healthy and what's not. It can get pretty confusing when you start scrolling on TikTok and the first video you see is promoting intuitive eating, while the second is trying to sell you the 75-hard workout plan.
Seeing this way too often, redditor Soren-J reached out to the AskReddit community with a question: “What is actually healthy but people think is not?” In response, netizens provided a list of things that undeservingly get a bad reputation in the wellness department.

Doing literally nothing to decompress. Sometimes one just needs to breathe and look out a window.
I'm guessing you do at least one of those most of the time.

Sleeping all day. C'mon, just let people catch up on the sleep they need. What harm is it doing to anyone else?
Unless you have ADHD. Then you either get stuck sitting there forever and the next thing you know it’s been nearly an hour and you still have a few things to do, or you can’t stop thinking and just start day dreaming about what you want to go do and then the whole effect of just sitting quietly and relaxing is moot
As long as you do this out of de-stressing,and not because of depression,ADHD or anything similar.. 🙀
There is no double blind trial, peer reviewed and fully referenced that can tell me if I like to relax.

They told us they saw another thread where the opposite was asked. However, as interesting as the topic was, they were more curious to know what healthy things were labeled as harmful.
When asked what makes people believe something is bad for them when it actually isn't, they told us that it all comes down to each person. "Things that seem healthy or unhealthy to us will initially be seen from a subjective point of view based on what we already know and believe about the world.
Access to information is not the same for everyone, and neither is its processing. We all grew up in different contexts and have different ways of seeing the world. This means that two people can think differently about the same thing, with one seeing it as healthy and the other as unhealthy."
Frozen fruits and vegetables. The modern flash-freeze technique preserves almost all of the nutrients and they are always picked when they are in season, so they are as nutritious as their fresh in-season counterparts, and more nutritious if it is not the season.
Less wasteful too, cos you can just shake out what you need
Load More Replies...I enjoy going to pick my own blue berries and put them in the seal bag and freeze them myself way cheaper too!!
They're actually often healthier than fresh fruit. Bananas for example get sprayed with a chemical to slow down ripening, then sprayed again to restart the process. That's two chemical baths just to get that fresh stuff shipped to you. Flash freezing doesn't need any of that stuff.
Frozen is often better than 'fresh' Microwaving food is a 'valid' way to cook. Restaurants cooking your stuff from frozen in a microwave is no less delicious, tasty and nutritious than any other storage/cooking method and ensures less waste..
It often IS less delicious due to the way the water in the product being frozen and defrosted affects the cell walls. Think about how gross frozen and defrosted strawberries are. Some things DEFINITELY freeze better than others (peas and sweetcorn! Fish does well too!).

"If you feel saturated with information, there is nothing like a doctor to clear up doubts, and although each doctor has their own opinions and approaches, at the end of the day, they look after the patient's well-being and will give their answer based on that.
But since we cannot take a doctor as a private consultant for any question of the day, we must look for reliable sources of information.
Using Google Scholar is a good option because it will take you to at least two official publications from scientific media, magazine articles, theses, and publications from universities that have been published on their websites."
They concluded by saying, "To be able to navigate contradictory information... you have to do a very honest job of research, not take anything for granted, and have a healthy minimum of disbelief in the face of new information, to question and verify it."
Spending time alone.
Why is this unhealthy? No one passing on a cold or flu, no one being stupid raising blood pressure.
It’s spending TOO MUCH time alone that isn’t healthy. While there’s a wide range of social time-alone time ratios that can be healthy, everyone needs both.
Disagree. I didn't have to change much during the pandemic because I've been avoiding the flaming train wreck that is humanity for decades now. I'm quite content with my own company. I'd say the ones needing help are those who cannot stand to be alone. If you don't like yourself, why would anyone else?

Living life without religion.
Both ways can make people happy. It's up to you and what you believe in and what gives you happiness
My religion brings me comfort. Believing that my Dad is in heaven waiting for me helps me to grieve. When I am struggling I often pray and feel better. I have never forced my religion on anyone as it's a deeply personal thing. People can believe or not believe in anything they want.
Smugly telling people their religion is garbage is no better than religious people smugly telling people that their religion or lack thereof is wrong.
Religion can definitely be a problem, and I say so as a Catholic. Spirituality, faith, on the other hand can be good things as long as they remain private and quiet. BTW even as a believer, I don't get why we should follow X rule whereas the same God told my neighbors to follow others. How come? Aren't those "rules" just man-made stuff God doesn't care about? Just be good to other as it's it's a win-win situation: if there is God, you're saved. If there's none, you've lost nothing and lived making this world better. This is Blaise Pascal's challenge and my way of life. :-)
The priests in the US (SE at least) end every mass praying for "politicians that support pro-life" ...."Lord hear our prayers." So every Catholic for the last 40 years has been told to vote republican. This s**t is NEVER private or quiet.
Load More Replies...Religion doesn't make you a good person. Your actions determine who you are.
If you need an omniscient deity threatening your life/afterlife to be a good person maybe you aren't a good person
It blows my mind that some think you need fear of retribution by "god" to keep you from being a bad person. No, I just try to be a good person.
Load More Replies...Given the rise of secularism and the overall decrease in people following organized religions, I would argue more and more people are finding life without religion to be the healthier choice.
It would seem that there is not an over all decrease in the absolute number of people who ascribe to an organized religion. It is the percentage that decreases within an increasing population. Actively religious people are more likely than their less-religious peers to describe themselves as “very happy” according to surveys. The same surveys indicate that actively religious people are more likely to engage with others in non-religious activities and are less likely to smoke or drink than their less/non-religious peers.
Load More Replies...Answering the prompt with "religion" doesn't mean that practicing religion switched into the place of not practicing religion this rendering it unhealthy and obsolete, but rather it is saying that not practicing/believing in a religion is not in itself *un*healthy. This is to say that you can do either, or both, depending on your own PERSONAL choices.
Admitting when you don't know something. Its okay to not have the answer. Too many people would rather b******t an answer, than accept what they don't know.
Sometimes the hardest part is not even to admit it, it's to realize it. Too many people think they are knowledgeable on topics they hardly know anything about. Since you're judging your ignorance according to your knowledge, the more you learn, the more you realize you're clueless.
Unless you want to be a politician in the U.S. Then your ignorance will get you elected to office.

One thing I've noticed as a nanny is that people don't think it's okay for their infant/toddler to chill in their crib alone after a nap. It's actually really healthy and good for them to chill alone in their cribs after they wake from a nap, especially if they aren't distressed about it! The parents will run to get them the moment they pop their eyes open, which eventually makes the kids start crying when they wake, because they expect someone to get them the moment their eyes open. These are also the babies that won't let you out of their sight for a moment.
But the ones who are able to chill alone for 10-20 minutes from the time they are really small, usually just roll around and babble to themselves for 10-20 minutes before they get upset. And the kids who can chill alone are usually really chill during wake times too, and don't freak out when you leave the room.
It's perfectly healthy for your kid to be by themselves even as babies.
Thank you! Also... Legit playpens are safe spaces for littles. New ones aren't built the same way - the one my mom used had sides that could be raised and lowered. She left us in them with one side down, and that was our designated play space that she could move around in case of showers, doing art projects in her studio, working in the kitchen, etc. It wasn't treated like a baby jail. We played and chilled there by ourselves a lot.
It’s sort of like how a dog might treat its kennel as its safe space to chill in!
Load More Replies...I noticed when my son was a baby that some babies are great about entertaining themselves. My friend's children rarely could play for a sustained length of time alone. My son could. Just difference in temperament, IMHO.
I wonder if there's a connection between babies who just chill by themselves for a bit and older children who know how to entertain themselves?
There is a phase that babies go through when they scream bloody murder when there isn't a parent around. This is a normal part of development. Even the babies that can chill in their crib will eventually reach this point. That doesn't mean I don't think it's okay to leave a child to relax a bit after they wake up. Just that the "These kids don't freak out when you leave the room" isn't a result of that, just that they haven't reached that phase yet.
One example of this is fat. "Far too many people still believe that anything high in fat is automatically unhealthy. This could not be further from the truth. In reality, we all need fat as our body is literally made from fat (cell membranes, our brain, hormones, etc. are all made from fat!).
There are of course good and bad fats and some fats can become unhealthy if they are heated at high temperatures but at the end of the day, high-fat foods such as avocado, oily fish, nuts & seeds are good for us.
Another reason foods can be seen as unhealthy is if they are naturally high in sugar (such as the poor old banana). The issue here is that statements are often taken out of context! Whether something is healthy or unhealthy depends a lot on when you are eating it, how big a portion is, and whether you are combining it with other foods or not. "
I keep hearing more and more people say that eating fruit is 'bad' because 'sugar'.
No, eating sweets made of processed ingredients is bad, fruit (as with everything, in moderation) is good. Fibre, vitamins and minerals, nutrition in something that just grows out there. Good. Eat fruit.
Real fruit juice is good. The manufactured product deceptively labeled as "fruit juice" is bad.
Load More Replies...This is a topic that gets cloudy because people over-complicate it. In the simplest terms, there's glucose, which the body produces from carbs. And there's FRUctose, which is what's in FRUit. Fructose is, actually, unhealthier than glucose, but it's a matter of quantity. The amount of fructose in fresh fruit is relatively very, very small. With that understanding, guest what HIGH FRUCTOSE corn syrup is HIGH in?
Fructose is not unhealthier than glucose. Most sugars have varied ratios of glucose and fructose and they are metabolized by the body the same way. It’s just the total amount of all sugars you are consuming that can be unhealthy.
Load More Replies...Other factors are definitely at play here. If you think an apple vs a spoonful of sugar is the same you're part of the problem.
You can eat whatever you want as long as you make good of it. If you can't - well, stay away from the carbs.
As a diabetic, fruit can only be had in very small proportion. Even vegetables are questionable. Carrots, corn, beets, many others, have high concentrations of sugar.
Fruit is indeed healthy for many reasons. Fructose may turn out to be about as bad as sucrose in the future, but that's only dangerous if you overconsume. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
It has also been shown that if you consume the same amounts of fructose naturally in whole fruit, compared to the same amount of fructose added to something, the affect on your body is significantly different - the fructose in fruit has a slower impact on your blood sugar levels compared to the exact same amount added to other foods. It has something to do with how it is bonded within the fruit (can't remember the finer details of the research I was reading about it). So a piece of fruit with 'x' grams of fructose/sugar has less impact than foods with the same amount that has been added during production.
Shocked that no one has said potatoes. They're one of the healthiest foods we know of - packed full of nutrients and vitamins, and carbohydrates. They're nearly enough to live off of entirely on their own.
It's the oil we cook them in that's the unhealthy part .
Heck - an astronaut could live on Mars eating nothing but potatoes... You could make a movie about it.
The oil, the butter, the sour cream, the fried bacon, and all that other garbage people put on, THAT is where the fat is. In Ireland during the 19th century, some people ONLY had potatoes to eat - no vegetables, no bread, no meat, nothing - and they remained healthy, they did not suffer malnutrition.
Which is why the potato famine was such a horrendous thing.
Load More Replies...It depends on your health. I have diabetes and potatoes make my sugar go up no matter how they are cooked so I have to limit how often I can eat them which sucks because potatoes are one of my favorite foods.
agree, I eat a yam or sweet potato with a lower glycemic index - white potatoes are pretty much off my list right now.

I believe Anonymouse above was making a reference to this movie.
Load More Replies...Ugh, for the last time. Calories are not inherently bad! Fat is not inherently bad!
Avocados, nuts and seeds are great sources of good fats. Oil fried or animal fat drenched spuds definitely not.
Load More Replies...I was gonna say chips, but then read the last part. So now I take that back.. 😏
And don''t peel them! The skin is where most of the nutrition comes from
As if no one would cook potatoes in water anymore. There are so many ways to cook potatoes. They are not only eaten as fries.
Water cooked potatoes are still high in carbohydrates. Which means unless you're otherwise suffering from a carbohydrate deficit, they're an easy way to go straight to energy *stores*. They're fine to eat some times, but we live in a world where carbohydrates are harder to avoid than find.
Complex carbohydrates are good, Simple carbohydrates not so much. Eat the boiled potato and not the potato chip.

Silence. We've gotten so used to noise pollution, real silence has become anxiety inducing. Silence improves sleep, helps your brain process what you're learning, reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, the list goes on.
I love silence. When my husband goes somewhere I turn off everything I can and just sit and listen to the quiet.
I love silence, too. Constant noise, music, talk, TV,etc stress me and makes me feel exhausted.
Load More Replies...I would rather be in silence with a small amount of noise, like an air vent or some house hold appliance running in the background. Otherwise, I get this stupidly loud ear ringing noise that defeats the whole purpose of silence
YES, tinnitus is made bearable by having something putting out noise. With me, the quieter it is, the louder the tinnitus gets.

Load More Replies...Yes. My boyfriend is obsessed with the TV and it drives me absolutely nuts. He can't fall asleep without the stupid thing on, which is hard for me because I need silence and pitch black to sleep. And the second his eyes open in the morning he turns it back on. I can't stand hearing people talking all damn day. Thankfully, aside from that, he is the most amazing human.
I was SO glad to return home from a month long PI trip. I like the people / things I saw but if you are anywhere near the cities / towns it is a noisy place. Always vehicles / roosters / barking dogs and people talking over the noise and each other. I live alone in a house that is tucked back in the woods. I can sometimes hear a dog in the distance or a passing plane but in general unless I am playing a movie or music it is very quiet in my house. We get used to what we are around the most.
In order to help people be more cautious about conflicting information online and make the right decisions for their health, Boellinger emphasizes the difference between whole foods and highly processed foods, and how important it's to listen to your body and find reputable sources.
"For example, a banana may technically have the same amount of sugar as a chocolate bar but in reality, it is still healthier because it also contains fibre and vitamins and minerals.
Secondly, listen to your body. If you feel well, have great energy levels, good sleep, and balanced moods you are likely doing the right thing. Don’t let anyone tell you something is unhealthy just because it didn’t work for them.
Finally, find reputable sources! Follow the advice of registered nutritionists over that of a fitness influencer and don’t listen to anyone who is trying to also sell you products (such as weight loss shakes etc)."
Crying.
Occasionally, you just have to let it out. Nothing wrong with this at all.
This is true for everybody. Male, Female, and Other.
Load More Replies...I love a good cry now. An episode of Bluey had me in bits last week. Took me a while to compose myself, and I felt better for the cry. I'll shed a tear at the odd episode of Bluey, but this was different.
After 42 years on this earth, I have finally found this to be the best method for releasing my anger. Now, when my husband sees me crying and asks what's wrong, I can truly and honestly say: Nothing.
I LOVE that endorphin-wave you get after a REALLY good sobbing. You're a complete mess but it feels so good to feel that blood rush when you're done.
But also nothing wrong with not crying. If you are someone who doesn't cry often, that doesn't mean there is something wrong with you.
Have a mental health day off from work.
Calling in sick in those cases is okay. You're suffering from Rectal Glaucoma (you just can't see your a*s going in to work).
At my job, besides the 7 weeks of paid vacation time, we get 1 day a year we can just take off without having to check if that's doable within the schedule. I can call in the morning and tell them "I'm not coming in today, I'm taking my employability day" and no matter what is going on that day, I get the day off no questions asked. Do I have an extremely important presentation that will make sure we get some customer for the next 6 months? Doesn't matter, I get the day off. Do I work on a line and have 50% of the other employees also decided to take the day off? Doesn't matter, not my problem.
I never took a mental health day. Unless you work for a company that has elective days off it is basically lying and saying you are sick when you're not.
Even those companies that they allow mental health days, they don't make it easy to request it and doesn't guarantee it won't go unpunished. Sometimes it's better to try to find a plan B when you're feeling burned out.

Sunlight.
There are specific times of the day where the UV days aren’t as damaging.
You need vitamin D, you need sunlight. Just don’t be lying out there for 3 hours tanning/burning.
It's tricky for me, Australia has super harsh sun and my mum has had skin cancer numerous times. I sunscreen up and make sure i get 30 min to an hour exposure for vitamin D
You can not get the vitamins if you wear sunscreen though. It is advised to stay under the sun for half an hour without sunscreen, during the time slot which it is most beneficial
Load More Replies...Sunlight in Australia will more than likely cause cancer, wear a hat, sunglasses,,sunscreen seek shade, and a long sleeved loose shirt if able. You only need 20 minutes a day to get vit D. Sometime ago I heard of a study where kids who stayed indoors were sicker with colds, and caught them more often, than kids who played outside. Sunshine is important, the UV rays are the potential killers.
Per my doctor, depending on altitude, you are safe in full sun up to 3 hours after dawn and 3 hours before sunset. Sunscreen, widebrimmed hats and longsleeves in between.
Wait until some people find out this is just electromagnetic radiation in the 789 - 405 THz! (Visible spectrum) 🫨🤓🤓
Didn't know some people believed sunlight is bad for your health (aside from the 'white pale skin' beauty criteria)
Sun exposure is a cause of skin cancer. But it is also necessary for vitamin D. The problem is finding the right amount of exposure to sunlight.

Nuts. Specifically unsalted nuts. Many ppl think they're not healthy because they only look at calories, but they're high in healthy fats, fibers, vitamins, so good to eat one or two hands per day of them (sure, not the whole bag at once ;-)).
Nuts are one of the heaviest food human GI system can take because they are plant-based. Yes, they may contain plenty micro and macronutrients, but they are not that easy to be digested unlike their animal-based counterparts, like cooked liver or kidneys, which are too very rich in vitamins.
But you'd have to be a sadist f you enjoy liver and kidneys. They taste....offal 😆

A man expressing his feminine side occasionally without feeling “gay” about it.
Yeah, that's really s****y. Having feelings is human, expressing them is human. Nothing about that has to do with sexual orientation.
Load More Replies...There's no such thing as a "feminine" side. People will do what they want, we just felt the need as a society to categorize and label certain activities as "masculine" and "feminine". High heels were not invented for women ;)
His "feminine side"? What, having periods and giving birth? Emotions are as important for men as for women. Being scared of not seeming manly is just pathetic.
People should just be free to enjoy themselves. I've seen some pretty "manly men" wearing makeup or being totally self absorbed and sensitive.
Even as a child of the 60s I never understood the folks who have this mentality. Not just with expression but even with objects. Like riding a girl's bike, liking something that is pink or pastel, stereotype chores like cooking or washing dishes. I was fortunate to NOT grow up around that sort of mentality. Not always in the form of "that's gay" but same idea for "only women do that". Like me mentioning plans to buy an umbrella in the Philippines due to the rain and being informed that "only women use umbrellas". Like "LOL What now?"
Gosh, there's a lot of unconscious bias going on in that one! How sad.
Yea, i remember growing up i had a bi friend (still chat with them but they are about 3 stages away from me now) it was more fun being with him because he loved to match my absurdity. I like to defer to ron white's "everybody is gay" spectrum
Drinking coffee - it's loaded with antioxidants and has been linked to a lower risk of several diseases.
As an Italian, I approve this! :-) And drink it the way you like: with sugar, milk, whatever, as long as you enjoy it.
IN MODERATION. If you drink too much you can become dependent on it.
In moderation...(she says after drinking like 8 cups today and now has increased anxiety, very fast heartbeat and crazy sweating) I'm fine...I'm totally fine... totally not addicted or anything...))
This seems pretty superficial. Should the coffee be caffeinated or decaffeinated? Black or with cream and sugar? Espresso? Latte? Etc.?
And not mixing it up with the jar of dog food! (From another post on BP)b
Load More Replies...Unless it's reducing the quality of your sleep. Good sleep is essential to good health. Decaf has all those antioxidants as well, and won't mess up your sleep as much. I don't like the taste as much personally, but getting great sleep is essential to being heathly. Also, don't drink it with sugar, you already get enough. And don't drink it with dairy, it significantly blocks the antioxidant absorption (just like milk chocolate vs. dark chocolate).
This, like drinking alcohol especially wine, seems to flip flop back and forth with each study.
You know what, I'm going to say it. Calories. Everyone acts like calories are the worst thing in the world, but they're just the numerical amount of energy a food gives you. There's nothing inherently bad about calories.
I look at calories as my daily "food budget" for the day. Do I want to blow all those calories for the day on one meal or spread it out thru out the day ?
I look at it the same way. I have tendecy to overeat and when I'm stressed sometimes it's hard to control it. Having a set number of calories helps me keep myself in check. Nothing wrong with counting kcals as long as you're not too focused on it.
Load More Replies...If I don't get enough calories in a day I feel really sluggish by the next day, and drained by the middle of my shift. We need that fuel.
Calories are essential to life. I don't the understand the concept of paying a higher price for foods that are labeled as "reduced calorie" or "low calorie". That is poor money management. If you are consuming excess calories, then the obvious solution is to eat less food. That's what I did when I was gaining too much weight. It worked for me.
Mild calorie restriction seems to have multiple health benefits, so being aware and keeping track of them is a good idea and saves on the food budget which is necessary now more than ever.
I thought thought calories were your score. Most days, I aim for a new high score!
Calories is just a way to measure your food's energy content. Too much may make you sick and too little will kill you.
A calorie means how much heat you can get when you burn a gram of something. Your body doesn't burn anything. Not directly and not everything. In fact excess of fats goes directly to your fat deposits. And excessive sugars get converted into fats (and goes to your fat deposits). The only thing that is somehow gets burnt properly are plain glucose and alcohol.
Saying no to certain social events even if you have the time to attend.
If you say no to everything long enough, people stop asking. It's fab!
Yea, but some people think people stop caring if they stop asking so it could be a double edged sword situation. It would be nice if someone could have a conversation about the fact that they will say no no matter what about going certain places. Like "I am always going to say no if you ask me to go to the club."

Vaccines , but that is just a small parcel of people with 3 neurons. .
Fully agree that considering them as a general threat is silly. Yet some people do react badly to vaccines though. I had a terrible Covid vaccine case in my family, yet my cousin wasn't allowed to go out or travel for quite a while, and couldn't get a bypass from authorities, despite the terrible effects.
I think of vaccines like seatbelts. In the vast majority of situations, they will help you avoid injury and death. But in some specific situations, they can do more harm than good. But that isn't reason to never wear your seatbelt.

Genetically modified foods.
Everything is genetically modified, mostly naturally by Agrobacterium or normally occurring mutations throu misses in the genome. And more recently through selective breading. Then even radiations and others that causes random mutations and hoping any of the come out any better.. 🙈 then CPRISPR doesn't sound to bad? It's as always how the technology are used. If for good, then it could be beneficial. Based Everything living has genes, that have some way been genetically modified from the start some 4,3 billion years ago.
The problem with GMO isnt whether they are healthy or not. Its the big corporations having patents on them, strangling small farmers.

GMOs are a two-edged sword. On the one hand, they can be more nutritious and rugged than "regular" crops; on the other hand, we have Monsanto modifying crops so farmers have to buy seed every year instead of planting from the previous season's harvest. GMOs in themselves are neither good nor evil - it's how people and corporations use them that determine if they are boon or bane.
Or they are modified so that Roundup doesn't kill them. Then crops are doused with roundup. This is certainly bad for everyone, the environment.....

Thank you! Everyone is aligning with common sense in this one. The dog came about from selective breeding from wolves to fit certain roles, you think we gene-edited them? You betcha, think we did it with current tech? Nope. That's why i can't see that while yes they are cute, cows are a good product as the undomesticated cow doesn't exist any more. Sad but true. (Possibly in places like India may have closer genetics to the first bovine)
And they're good because they grow faster, yielding more product and that in turn can help feed more people, it is especially useful in feeding underdeveloped countries.
Lime and lemon are human-created variants of the citron. And you've had them, one way or antoher, all your life.
I still want to have it indicated, if the animal or veg or fruit has been forced-gmo.
What do you mean forced-gmo? Cause morning had been forced in the context of how its created, Gene editing is still very new and most gmo are quite old

Maintaining work boundaries.
A lot of oldies and bootlickers would immediately gang up on you and call you lazy and have poor work ethics for even thinking about working only during your paid hours and utilizing your PTOs.
Remember kids! If you work hard, go above and beyond, do a lot of overtime, put your work above everything else and never take a day off, then one day, your boss may go to space!
they can gang up all the want. They'll be dead long before me so I dont care.
This is probably worse in some cultures / some jobs. In the USA I worked several types of jobs over the years and this was never a problem for me. At a couple of the jobs I did sometimes stay over for special situations but it was compensated for with either pay or comp time off. From videos / commentaries I have seen it appears Japan (and maybe also Korea) are big on the give your all for the company mentality.
A few years back, after over twenty years of marriage, my wife died from a terminal illness. During the final months of her life, she told me things she wish she had done more like spend time with her friends and family or travel. Never did she say she wished she worked more or made more money. The children are grown now, 33, 31, and 29. They don’t remember the “cool stuff” they got for birthdays or Christmas but they do remember family vacations from when they were as young as 4 and soccer games their mom attended when they were 9. There will be more opportunities to earn money but you can never earn more time.
I feel like it's mostly the Millennials start-up work atmosphere that removes completely the boundaries.... With all the 'cool' afterworks, parties, ski trips, ping pong contests etc where you spend leisure time with colleagues. Personal experience is that the 40-50 year old colleagues just want to go home to their partners and kids/pets and watch some sports game.
And most of those are dead within 2 years of retiring. Outside interests are what keep us going.
I think it really depends on the company you are working for - and in which country - US employment policies sounds nuts compared to the UK - its all down to personal experience - I grafted hard and still do - over and above any employment contract - BUT, I personally get a lot out of it and am rewarded for it - not particularly in £. I can absolutely see why it is a nightmare in other places tho

Butter.
just pure butter.
while we're at it: lard, tallow as well.
Fat doesn't make people fat. How are people not aware of the fact that foods get digested? They don't go directly from your mouth to your fat cells.
It does, just like ever other macro nutrient - if you consume too much of it. That's pretty much the key to all dieting. Moderation. Unfortunately, fat like sugar is easy to get too much of because it tastes good and we're genetically wired to crave it.
Load More Replies...One of my fondest memories is of my mom making biscuits (the bread kind not the cookie kind, for our UK friends). She used lard. I was 3 or 4 and would sit on the counter and eat the dough scraps 😋
I also make biscuits with lard, have a tub in the fridge right now.
Load More Replies...Real butter is sooooo much better for you than those "butter substitutes". I grew up eating margarine, it was supposed to healthier, but now they have found that it is not as good for you as real butter. I hate margarine!
People who eat plain butter seem kind of strange. Do people actually do that?
People used to collect grease from cooking bacon. I don't know if that could replace cooking oil in everything, though.
I still do. I have a container beside the stove made especially for that. It has a strainer at the top with very small holes to catch solids, and the hot bacon grease goes through it to the bottom, where it partially solidifies as it cools. When I want to use some I lift the strainer out and get the grease out with a spoon or butter knife.

Having a balance of being both negative and positive. Too much positivity is bad. You need to have a balance.
Hard no. A lot of people, especially victims of abuse, have a hard time accepting good things happening to them or feeling like they deserve to have good things happen to them. The only time "too much positivity" is a bad thing is when it veers into toxic positivity, which is a completely separate concept.
How is too much positivity not toxic positivity?? If you're positive all of the time, you're neglecting to see things as they really are sometimes.

Sunscreen.
Is it really a thing? I know some people who think/say that they don't need to use it, but I never met someone who would outright call it "unhealthy"
...depends on how much of it you're drinking each day, really...
Load More Replies...I have literally never heard someone call sunscreen unhealthy...online or off.
To be fair, some people do react badly to some sunscreens. A few years ago I learned that one particular sunscreen ingredient "worked in reverse" on me... it caused photosensitivity and I got blisters on the backs of my hands where they had been exposed to the sun. Switching to a different brand which didn't use that ingredient made that problem go away.
Cutting off toxic parents.
From what I read here on BP, yes, cut off toxic parents or any other toxic family members.

Boredom.
Boredom is great (to some extend). If you are not bored, your brain doesn't need to create new ideas.
Some of us have brains that are constantly whizzing around. We do not need boredom to create new ideas. What we need is double the number of hours in the day to plan and execute all of the ideas we've already had! The only time I am ever bored is when I'm recovering from illness - my brain has revved up again, but my body isn't ready to get going. ... Perhaps this isn't boredom, it's frustration. I don't think I'm ever bored.

Healthy for your mental health, not healthy for your voice lol
The old lady next door came over a couple of weeks ago. She has a badly screwed up back, and has issues walking sometimes. So she crawled from her house to mine. A health-care person once told her it was healthy to scream at pain, so when she's in pain, she screams. A passerby saw my neighbor, crawling through the grass, screaming at the top of her lungs. The passerby banged on my door to tell me an old lady had fallen and needed help. I called 911, and told the dispatcher what was going on, but also that the information was second-hand. The dispatcher decided to call an ambulance. By the time the ambulance arrived, the old lady was sitting on the floor of my hallway, cursing me up, down, and sideways for being so stupid as to call 911, just because she was crawling through the yard screaming.
There are very few places left where one can scream without bein heard.
Once again, there are times when you just have to let it out. Nothing to be ashamed of at all.
Eating fats like avocados is actually healthy, despite what some think.
The same people who will tell you eggs increase your LDL cholesterol.

Whereas pork fat are close to 50% in saturated fats and butter could give even more than that. But hey, there's more. Avocado omega6 to omega3 ratio is a wopping 13:1. Meaning you'll end up severely inflammated if your diet consists of avocado. Worse if you have arthritis or some kind of auto immune disease.
Cursing when in acute pain.
Me and my body get into arguments all the time. "KNOCK IT OFF BODY, I JUST WOKE UP ! WTF!" I lose the argument when my body goes, " OH YEAH, HOW DO LIKE THIS FEELING ! STOP IGNORING ME!" We're like an old married couple now. Lol
Aaaah, I remember when endometriosis was almost unheard of and we had to pretend absolutely nothing was going on with our body (and hide the pain side effects like sweating and shaking), while secretly and seriously wishing to jump off a cliff because of the hardcore pain.
Repeatedly scientifically proven to reduce acute pain. I nursed for years and encouraged my patients to let loose when I was doing painful procedures to them. Swear away, kids. It does help. Incidentally, so does sugar.

Plant-based diets. People think they're deficient in everything from protein to vitamins while in fact it's virtually impossible to be protein deficient if you get enough calories and vegetables are better sources of most vitamins and minerals than animal products. Also very easy to get calcium, iron, omega-3, etc etc from plants.
Not to mention, the best, largest studies on the subject (those that follow tens or hundreds of thousands of people over decades) consistently show that people who follow plant-based diets have better health outcomes and longer lives.
Bring on the angry downvotes...
No downvote from me, however, there are numerous ways of healthy eating that are not solely plant based. I am a believer (unless for religious or allergy/anaphylaxis reasons) that a varied and in moderation eating plan is of benefit to overall health. Including exercise, and positive mental state. I have now set myself up for the downvotes.....
" it's virtually impossible to be protein deficient if you get enough calories " Completely wrong. Processed food has a sh!t ton of calories and carbs and very little protein. It is EASY to be protein deficient even if you exceed your 1500-2000 calories a day or whatever.
Just do t forget to ensure you are getting all your amino acids and B12. Talk to your doctor about what's right for your health before you jump into anything. Your doctor can recommend you to a nutritionist or a registered dietitian. These people are medically trained to tell what specific foods you in particular should avoid for your specific health condition. Especially if you have something like kidney or heart disease.
What's to downvote for anyway? All claims are true. People blabbering about how bad it is usually can't even point to one aspect of it, while there truly is one issue needing to be adressed, which is Vitamin B12. Anything else, everything else - eat varied, don't worry. There's real issues to worry about.
Plant-free diets can give you all of the nutrients you need. If done right. There are are ways to be vegetarian that are not complete and balanced nutrition. Some vegetarians good/some bad.

There is not necessarily anything wrong with the tap water itself, but with the pipes themselves. I just read how re-coated pipes release a chemical called bisphenol A into the water. It affects hormone function, reproduction and the immune system. Apparently it doesn't dissolve in cold water.
At this point, such chemicals are present in all water, including rain. It doesn’t dissolve, period.

Salad dressing: the vitamins in leafy greens are oil-soluable, and if you don't include one you don't get the full benefit of your leafy greens.
Good olive oil and either red wine or balsamic vinegar makes a tasty salad. Ive avocado oil and grapeseed oil for a twist.
Pumpkin seed oil for a life! I used to hate putting any sort of dressing in my salad but I changed my mind after trying lettuce mix with pumpkin seed oil. Also, "dressings" made from olive oil and leftovers of jam.

Honey does hurt you cold providing excessive glucose as a fuel for viruses and bacteria.
How much are you eating?! Also, honey is antibacterial, and amazing for coughs and sore throats. In studies, for children between the ages of 1-5, giving them honey at bedtime had the same cough suppressing effect as giving them cough syrup. Also in studies, honey doesn't have the same effects as sugar on the bacteria in your mouth and appears to actually be protective. It's magical stuff.

Unless you do sports or a woodcutter you don't need them AT ALL. Body generates them just fine on its own. Exactly how much it needs them via gluconeogenesis.
This is true. There are essential fatty acids that your body can't make. And there are essential amino acids that your body can't make. But there is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate. That being said, carbs are a great vehicle for nutrients. Just make sure the vehicle isn't [always] empty.

Gluten for people with no medical issue with it and palm oil that we don't avoid cos it's not healthy but because palm cultivations tens to rob various animals of their natural habitat.
Lactose has ended up in a similar basket. Many people have decided that because there are lactose intolerant people, lactose is bad and should be avoided. If you're lactose intolerant, true. If you're not, it's fine.
I'm lactose intolerant. I can't stand some of those milk substitues. I cannot give up my dairy. I take a lactase pill and I'm able to eat what I want. And for people who aren't aware, cheese made from goat milk or sheep milk is OK, it is just cow's milk that has the enzyme that causes the problems
Big no. Eating gluten actually develops allergic food reactions because it increases gut permeability. Meaning more proteins get outside of the gut more you suffer from allergic reactions. Agree with you in palm oil trees though.
Exactly. The only reason someone would avoid gluten is if they have something like Crohns disease.

Your blood sugar “spiking” after eating certain foods. That’s exactly what’s supposed to happen. Unless you’re diabetic, you need to spend zero time worrying about your blood sugar. Just eat healthy foods and go easy on the junk food and sweets.
? Source ? I thought that's make you crash after a shorter while that if you having shower ups and downs?
Correct. You don't want a 'spike' but a sustained, lower increase. So smaller, longer fluctuations than larger, shorter ones. You achieve this by eating low GI foods, fibre etc Apple cider vinegar before meals will assist as will supplements like berberine. Spikes will punish your pancreas.

What a load of dangerous horseshaite. Not only flavonoids like quercetin are endocrine disruptors (pHyToEstRoGenS), which excessive consumption directly leads to diseases like breast cancer and male reproduction system failure, they literally only exist so that plants could defend themselves from being eaten by animals. It's their sole purpose - being toxic to plant-eating animals, bacteria and fungi. Liver failure is the best thing you could get from having a pill a day with micronized flavonoids.

If it were a matter of religion doing better at attracting healthy, well and happy people, or people losing faith when they face struggles, you'd expect that formerly religious people scored especially poorly, but in fact, the never-religious are those that score significantly worse. Funny how BPs fumbled over themselves to upvote "lack of religion," when BP is so filled with miserable, angry people bitterly awaiting some Thanos to put them out of their misery. No, not all religions are the same. But the benefit caused by religion did extend beyond traditionally Christian regions.)
