Workers That Took Back Control Share Their Career-Ending Texts (New Pics)
Interview With ExpertThose who had the pleasure of quitting a job know that it can be an awkward and extremely nerve-wracking experience. I, for example, felt so nervous and guilty about handing in my very first notice that I made up a whole story about how I got this new amazing opportunity when in reality I spent the summer relaxing and soaking all the vitamin D I could. But a great way to avoid the pleasantries and unpleasantries of announcing your resignation is to do it over a message.
The Facebook page “I quit my job by text” has supplied us with many examples where people couldn’t be brave enough or bothered to hand in their notice in person. Even though it might not be the most professional way to do it, it can be a lifesaver for people who want to quickly get it over with, don’t care for the workplace anymore, or have extremely introverted tendencies, like the fear of confrontation.
To learn more about resigning over a message, we reached out to therapist, career and life coach, Helen Godfrey, and career coach Kacie Bail, who kindly agreed to tell us more about it.

I got laid off from my job in Sept. They didn’t realize how much I did for them because I’m still getting texts and phone calls to this day (November). I ignore them all 😎 I had to “figure it out” after they laid me off with 0 notice, they can “figure it out” too, or pay me $100/hr to answer questions with a minimum 4 hour charge each day.
If they are still trying to contact you, they must be pretty desperate. answer the phone and tell them your demands, and see what they say
Load More Replies...*Would HAVE, for fúck's sake. This is my linguistic hill to die on.
It seems to be universal. I was let go when mgt thought they knew my job better than I did. They got a very angry phone call from the client when I didn't show for my weekly, on-site meeting - mgt had no idea I drove from our office once a week to meet with client. Same mgt called me wanting to know where I kept the standards I worked with, after I was let go. I said "in my head" and hung up.
That's hysterical. And it would be a baller move if one would do that for oneself, especially if your boss is a jackass.
This has been around for a while and is missing the rest of the message where she apologies and points out it's not for her, but her boyfriend (at a different company).
Maybe she is just a better writer than he is or knows exactly what to say to get the point across using just the correct amount of bitchiness without sounding like a complete d0uche? Idk. Just my opinion.

‘Be grateful … I allow you to see your family once a weeks.’ Sounds like a hostage situation.
How is that even legal??!!! An employer over here would be roasted on a spit of £££££££££££ for that.
It’s always a good thing to go along with someone’s bluff as their reaction is priceless, worst thing is that he’s saying “I allow you to see your family “ talk about power tripping
Be grateful that "I allow you to see your family once a week." This is a fake post, I refuse to believe a boss actually wrote this to an employee! Hahahaha!!!
You've never lived or worked in america, I take it.
Load More Replies...According to 2023 October statistics, a whopping 3,628,000 workers in the U.S. left their jobs. The most common way to announce their resignation was in person (76%). 23% did so by email and 10% by text message. 9% went as far as leaving a handwritten note.
When employees hand in their notice, it seems to be brief. 43% who quit in person talked for a few minutes, while 1 in 10 people who sent an email or text wrote just a few words.
"I just quit my job after a month of working 40+ hours a week along with a second job. I hope she enjoys finishing truck by herself!"
All this harassment.... for Walgreens?! Walgreens is barely a notch above a gas station, not deserving of this kind of treatment.
Any boss that expects a person to give up their main job in favor of theirs has a serious mental problem. Biscuitville DM actually expected my wife to shut down her multi-location business to work beyond 10AM for $10/hr. In response she went to work for Hardee's where they were ecstatic to get her until 10.
Quit a job where I was overworked and underpaid, and found a more stable better paying job. Manager texts me months later
"Thanks for reminding why I left. Good of you to provide so much confirmation to my decision."
Should've been "There's a reason I walked out said door" after "Precisely".
"So this just happened and I’m almost numb atm. I hope I don’t regret this tomorrow as I do enjoy my job."
NO is a complete answer. Don't explain yourself, ever. Also, don't share personal struggles with your employer, they will misuse the info.
It really pisses me off how the managers and supervisors try to bully the employees into submission with threats.
same. and I've been managing people for more than 20 years at the same company. My people come to me and say they have an emergency and they need to go now! Then, they attempt to tell me why and I ALWAYS immediately stop them and say "I' am 100% here for you to talk to and will always listen but you do NOT have to tell me why. I trust you and I know you gotta go, I'll be here tomorrow if you need someone to talk to" They always come back the next day to talk and get advice for 'whatever' and I will forever be willing to listen. I also have 15 people and they've been with me ranging from 22 years down to 6 years. KINDNESS ALWAYS WINS... if not in that moment, it will. Karma works both ways.
Load More Replies...That's blatant discrimination. You can't hold child free people more responsible for work than people who have kids. It's a law in my state. And this idiot put the crime in writing!
Typical breeder stuf. "You should work overtime for free or be on call 24/7 because the breeder has a kid!"
Who impregnates the breeder? Ohh wait, a man does and even in 2024 the man does not assume the same level of responsibility for their kids as the mother does so you can go f**k yourself.

You know what I enjoy about a job? Getting paid. I'm not here for the fun of it. No, I am NOT like family. If we were like family, I'd tell you to shove it up your @ss
Interestingly enough, in the UK, people favored quitting in person less. Almost half (47%) have quit a job via text, email, call, or voicemail. The majority of them were younger folks (64%) aged 25-34.
Even though resigning by text may be easier than having a face-to-face conversation, this doesn’t prevent people from ghosting their employers altogether. 29% of workers left work and never came back without saying a word. This is the second most common way to quit in the UK. Meanwhile, in the US, the no communication method comprised 19% of all quitting cases.
Context: I was a great waitress, I had worked there over a year, made a slightly higher tip percentage than the other girls (tips were pooled), was always on time, and had NEVER no called-no showed. To give “proof” that I was a great waitress, I had JUST been given a raise (base pay) and been promoted to a shift lead position of sorts. The restaurant had planned a Halloween party (Oct, 22nd 2022) quite a bit in advance, we were all supposed to dress up and had a special menu planned. I was excited for it! I went costume shopping with my boss in the text so she knew I was planning on going. My grandpa was on hospice during this time period and unfortunately passed away. As soon as I knew when his funeral was I asked if I could have the day off. They said NO (insane) because “all waitresses” needed to work the Halloween party. Later on however, they let a girl take the night off because she’d been there a month and she “wasn’t comfortable working a party yet” ??? That trumps funeral?? I was upset but because the funeral was in the morning I figured it would be okay. Well flash forward to the day of the funeral and I just could not bring my self to rush home, put makeup and slutty costume on, and go be high energy with strangers, a mere three hours after burying my grandpa. I texted this at 1pm and the shift starts at 5pm. It was rainy that night and from what I could see from their instagram it wasn’t the absolute mad house that needed everyone on board they thought it would be. It was really unfortunate because I considered my manager a true friend but this really showed their true colors
I was managing a bar in a restaurant and when the front of house managers weren't there I was the lead. Had a server say he needed to leave to go put his dog down as he had taken a turn that morning. Say no more, get going. When he came back 2 hours later to finish his shift I asked him what the hell are you doing back? He said he wanted to be around friends. We had that kind of culture because we created it. We would all cover for each other and happily do so. That was one of the best jobs I ever had. There were about 5 of us that had worked together at other restaurants, catering, bartending etc. We hand picked and recruited our crew from other places we all worked at and truly had a dream team.
I needed a morning off at short notice last week, as in I found out the night before that I needed the next morning off for a family member's unexpected hospital trip. Couldn't get hold of the boss that night, so I decided I would just go, and I'd message in the morning. My partner said "Are you sure that will be OK?" I said "Yep, I know exactly what he'll say. He'll say 'As far as I'm concerned, family comes first'". When I got to speak to him, that's EXACTLY what he said. Some bosses are good, and some countries have a much better work-life balance than the US.
This exact thing just happened to me except the person who passed away was my children's father from cancer. Being that his funeral was on a Tuesday morning and I gave 2 weeks advance notice, I did not expect this to happen but here we are. It's sad how some people are these days and what is important and what isn't.
Always take the whole day off when there's a family funeral. You aren't going to feel like going into work later in the day.
Got my boss to admit to wage theft
(my employer is rounding down my hours so he can pay me less.)
I work for a very well-known corporation as a server/bartender. My shift usually starts at 4:00 pm.
The time clock rounds my hours to 15-minute intervals. If I clock in at 4:01, I don't start getting paid until 4:15. If I clock in at 3:50 and start working immediately as expected, I don't get paid for those first 10 minutes. I know if I clock out at 10:40 it doesn't round to 10:45. It gets rounded down to 10:30. My general manager confirmed that over text. This means I lose up to 28 minutes in my wages every shift.
I know this is wage theft. They did not notify me that they changed the time clocks. When I was first employed, I was paid from when I clocked in to when I clocked out. I wasn’t aware that it was rounding down my hours for a few months. I believe that I'm owed a couple of hundreds of dollars in unpaid wages. I'm planning to send these screen shots to the labour board but I'm not very hopeful anything will happen
I want to know what excuse the boss gives for "rounding up" like that. Sounds like total BS, and I really hope the labor department takes this seriously.
It's exactly what she said, they are doing it manually and claiming it's automation. No clock company in the modern world is stupid enough to make a product that would do that because of the lawsuits.
Load More Replies...That's how my last job worked, and it's perfectly legal in my area. We started clocking in and sitting down to play on our phones until 15 after. They couldn't do a thing about it because we're not getting paid, so we don't have to work yet. If it looked like we were going to clock out late, we'd simply pick up a broom for a few minutes. Great way to get 15 minutes of overtime.
wth happened to getting paid for the time that shows on your time card?!
I used to work at a company that did this. Learned that if I'm late, I can just chill a bit, grab a coffee and then clock in when the interval starts.
Yep this is why I hate clocking systems. clock in at 09:02 and it rounds it to 09:15, but clock out at 16:43 and it rounds it to 16:30. This is exactly why my coworkers always wait the minute till it reaches 45 or 00 before clocking out. Or refuse to do anything before 00 or 15.
WTF? I've always paid employees THE EXACT amount of time they worked. If you clock in at 4:03 and clock out at 4:30, I pay you for 27 minutes.
I literally just got home from my first day of work
For those who are confused - "laid off" is not the same as "fired". If you are fired, that means that the employer thinks or claims that you did something wrong. If you were laid off, that generally means that your are no longer need you for whatever reason (usually downsizing or eliminating positions for other reasons). SO "you are no longer needed" means that they were laid off.
It seems OP didn't meet performance expectations, but it sounds like a firing to me
However, therapist, career and life coach Helen Godfrey, and career coach Kacie Bail recommend against quitting over text.
"I would not recommend resigning over text because it would come across as unprofessional," says Godfrey.
"If you’re thinking about resigning over text, please consider writing an email instead since it is a more formal way to communicate such important news," adds Bail.
The truly sickening practice is the companies that purposely destroy food to prevent/deter dumpster diving... you're literally throwing it away because you didn't sell it but the homeless people referred to in this image are PAYING CUSTOMERS!!
My city was doing a homeless count. My husband and I had taken a load of bottles into the bottle depot. I was approached by a woman with a clipboard her first question was "Where will you sleep tonight? I replied "in my bed? Then she asked do you have a home? I replied yes? She noticed my little pug dog beside me and asked Are you allowed to have your dog with you? I replied of course I am. She then asked "where is your home? I replied in the Condos down the street. She said I didn't know they allowed people to sleep there. I said why would they not allow me to sleep their I own my condo?" She said I'm sorry but the way you are dressed makes you look homeless. To go to the Bottle Depot I'm supposed to wear my best jacket and boots instead of the ones I wear when mucking around in the garage. Stop making assumptions based on the way people are dressed.
I know this seems awful, but companies do this because other companies have been sued in the past by homeless people who have gotten sick on donated food. It's a liability issue.
I don't have a car, so I use a radio flyer wagon to go shopping. I lived in the same apartment for 7 1/2 years, and because I pull that wagon people think I'm homeless! I went to get my haircut at the local salon. The owner called the police on me, because she thought I was going to stiff my hair dresser! It's a small town, and the officer that came by knew me. He told her, I'm not going to kick her out! She's a good person, and I've known her for years! She came storming back in! I still use the same hair dresser, and it took three more times going in, before I could get them to believe that I'm not homeless!
To be clear, that's the law in many states. You have to destroy food that is expired/had been out too long because it's considered unsafe for human consumption. It's had enough time for unsafe levels of bacteria and viruses to grow in it since it was frozen/cooked. Giving old food to people past OSHA deadlines can literally lead to illness or death. However small that risk is.
Let me keep bashing this utter idiocy, because that BS *HURTS PEOPLE*. The United States to which you are referring (from the OSHA reference) have a law dating back to 1996 -42 U.S. Code § 1791- that explicitly shields the companies making food donations from any kind of liability stemming from the donated food, including [insert spongebob meme] "IlLnEsS oR dEaTh". As long as the donation is not done with manifest hurtful purpose (i.e. donating poisoned stuff), and the stuff is reasonably expected to be safe for consumption, people and companies have ZERO risk of being liable for damage and enjoy legal protection at Federal level. The DOJ even added further protection in recognizing the law as a minimum threshold for all 50 states + DC, allowing states to even INCREASE the guaratees offered. Google for "Good Samaritan Act" and educate yourself.
Load More Replies...My gfs job gave her a fake raise
So about a week ago my girlfriend was excited to tell me she had been given a raise at her job. Apparently raise has a different meaning now than more money in your paycheck. Since when does anyone appreciate a recognition card.
For context my previous job treated me like shit and eventually got sued by a bunch of companies and lost a lot of its business. They paid bad and tried to seem perfect to the public, but no one was fooled by them except for a few people. They were sued for animal mistreatment and abuse. There was a lot of messed up shit that took place there. Of course my Mom couldn't be happy for me. She honestly never cared, she even kicked me out of the house a week after I turned 18 in April. I now live a much more happy life at my Dad's house. (My Mom and Dad got divorced when I was 3 and a half.)
I was about to comment that her name was the really tragedy here.
Load More Replies...You don't OWE an employer two weeks notice (at least where I live), it's a courtesy. I quit two jobs same day in my life. Three others, I gave several months notice... courtesy is earned, not owed.
That really depends on laws and customs. Where I live the usual notice is three MONTHS - and for both sides, too. An employer needs a good reason (like stealing or assault) to fire anybody on the spot. A simple "we don't need you any more" is usually not enough to cancel those three months. Vice versa emlpoyees are expected to give three months' notice as well.
Load More Replies...Two weeks notice is a curtesy, not a requirement. They will not give you two weeks notice when they are downsizing or terminating you. They will just make an announcement or talk to you in person, and then walk you out the door. So give two weeks if you can/want to, but don't feel obligated to do so. (This applies to the US. Other countries may or may not have different labor laws and practices.)
I wondered that. Cut that vampyric anti cheerleader out of your life now. She'll only suck the joy out of your promotion, new car, new apartment, engagement, wedding, pregnancy. There is only anti-joy and doubt on every step you take from that direction. Trust me, I've had pet vampires too. I got sick of it. 🙂
Load More Replies..."Some potential consequences of resigning via text message include burning bridges with your employer, seeming unprofessional, and unintentionally conveying your resignation with a tone you didn’t intend," says Bail. "If your resignation message is seen as unprofessional or misunderstood, it may negatively affect your chances of securing a positive reference, a referral in the future, or returning to the company later."
Oof... Perfect reason why you should always discuss your wage with coworkers
I learned it was important to discuss wages when I realized another student coach with no experience coaching was making 33% more than me because they were a year older when I had 4 years of experience at the time. I did get a raise so all is good. I love my coaching job but the head coach didn't realize the discrepancy.
AND - FYI: it is illegal for an employer to tell you you can't discuss your wages with your coworkers.
Be careful comparing to temp workers. A part of what the company pays goes to the temp agency. Usually it is around 50-60% of the total.
True but in this case they mentioned what the temp workers were making take home
Load More Replies...Thats the entire point of discussing it: so people get upset and demand a fair change.
Load More Replies...“hey so you kinda have to come to work” is not an emergency when the other side of the conversation is “my wife is in immediate labour”
But also, that is not what an emergency contact is for.
Load More Replies..."Quit my job yesterday because I was tired of the unprofessional environment - got this text from my supervisor today."
Of course you agree to work the shift! You just show them the same level of professionalism that they showed you. Don't show up. What are they going to do? Fire you? 🤣
Ah they tried this as well at one of my old jobs. Fired me, but still had ex-colleagues message me FOR MONTHS asking me to cover their shifts (in multiple stores) because the HR-manager refused to take me off the employee list while they fired me. I had to file a privacy removal claim to get rid of those people messaging me (I already blocked those people when they messaged me).
However, despite this, there are still circumstances when resigning by text may be appropriate. One of them is feeling not safe with your manager, says Godfrey.
"In that case, I would recommend having a conversation with your human resources (HR) department. Otherwise, typically, you will want to give 2 weeks’ written notice. Written notice is a typed letter or email of resignation. You will generally want to have a conversation with your direct supervisor first and follow up with your written resignation letter after your conversation," she explains and notes that the letter should be gracious, as shown below.
"Thank you for the opportunity. Wishing you the best in your future endeavors.”
How my boss asks me to work 21 days straight.
We have 7 routes and 11 drivers. These guys thought it was a good idea to let 3 drivers take a vacation spanning over 3 months. All 3 will be gone at the same time over the next month. So what's their plan? Try to make other drivers work for almost a month straight to pick up the slack. Needless to say, it hasn't gone over well. Now the boss and production manager get to drive a couple nights a week as well as work the day shift.
“ Now the boss and production manager get to drive a couple nights a week as well as work the day shift.” which is dangerous.
I would hope the night and day shifts are not in the same 24 hour span but I don't believe it lol
Load More Replies...I had this happen at my large global financial services company. They laid people off, instantly split an extra desk load between my partner and I. Then she traipses home to Germany for a 6 weeks vacation (She usually went for three, no special reason that year) not giving a sh*t whatsoever and the company let her do it shorthanded and with short notice, instant triple load for me. Impossible load. I couldn't wait to get laid off, just hung in there to wait for severance pay. We each got 4 weeks vacay spread over a year, most people left for two weeks at a time, 3 for something special, and never dumped their job on their partners for 6 straight with no conscience whatsoever..
7 routes and 11 drivers. 3 drivers are off. That would mean there are still 8 drivers left, so one extra.
Note that there are two shifts. I would assume not all routes are run both shifts or that not all drivers work every day.

A glazing job should be at least 50% more than a has station attendant, ie around 18+ per hour. Saying that they start at 13 means they are low balling their staff badly
Load More Replies...Handing in notice via email may also be fitting if the manager is not available for an in-person meeting or a call in a timely manner, says Bail.
"If you’re trying to give 2 weeks' notice and your manager says the next available time they can meet in person is 2 weeks from now, I would recommend calling them or emailing them to give them adequate notice," she says.
My dad had a stroke and I took my vacation at work to help care for him. He's not doing too good, and my SO and I are moving to help him and my step mom, and I had to give a 1 week notice (not ideal, but better than none imo). Got this text from the owner of the store.
I was “promoted to salary” once. It was because I was working so hard and so many hours that they were tired of paying me overtime. It took me a couple months to clue in cause I’m a dumb dumb sometimes and felt so honoured over this “promotion.”
Being on salary is great! You can work as many hours as the company demands and not get compensation for it. I hate being on salary.
Load More Replies...Another FYI - It is illegal to "require" salaried employees to work overtime without compensation. I had to pull out the Dept. of Labor & Industries Washington State Employer's Guide to prove to the GM that making a guy who works 60 hours a week salaried does not mean he still works 60 hours a week. He argued with me, even though it was right there in black & white. I had to call our corporate attorney, who set him straight.
As a last last resort, like in the case of family emergencies or other extreme cases such as those mentioned above, Godfrey proposes to formulate the text like this:
"Thank you for the opportunity to work at ABC company. Due to personal reasons, I will not be able to return to work, effective immediately. Thank you for understanding.”
"Depending on your relationship with your manager, you may choose to share more details and you may even be able to negotiate some flexibility instead of resigning," she notes.
Last ditch effort or I quit tonight
I have been trying to communicate to my bosses basically since I started (Nov 2023) and I am ignored, not taken seriously, or gaslit and manipulated. This is my last attempt at getting some peace and control over my job. If this conversation doesn’t go how I want it to, I’m quitting in the middle of my shift and reporting them.
Context: I am a bartender and the owners/my bosses have no problem putting my license and career at risk
As a fellow bartender, this makes me so angry- don't come behind my bar if its my shift.
I probably would have ended the email saying" See ya. Wouldn't want to be ya!"
I wouldn't. I avoid cliches like the plague.
Load More Replies...To resist the urge to quit over text, the experts provided some recommendations that can make in-person resignation less nerve-wracking and awkward.
Godfrey strongly suggests being prepared beforehand. "Practice what you are going to say. Type out your script and say it out loud 2-5 times before you meet with your manager. Focus on the positive aspects of your job and everything you’ve learned. Thank your manager for helping you grow as a professional," she said.
Employer didnt contact all weekend regarding monday work
My employer didnt contact me at all this weekend for work (i am a renovations contractor, monday to friday work schedule). I texted him this morning, and this was the conversation i had. This is the second time ive had to message him to figure out where im working and i have only been working for him for 8 days. In those 8 days, hes told me he restructured and fired all his staff 6 months ago and was working on a new team. Also told me he expects us to use personal vehicles to bring materials to site. A coworker was then told to pick up 10 bags of concrete in their vehicle.
Yep, it’s code for something like their ex-employees all walked out, or their work visas expired, or their company was raided by INS for human trafficking.
Load More Replies...Nope. I don't have a construction vehicle. Just imagine how it will go when someone using their car for company business gets in a wreck and the company gets hit with the claim. Everywhere I've ever worked, law states the company becomes for a persons vehicle if it's being used for company business.
for context I 22F work in a kitchen. The previous 2 weeks i was out of work in mourning because I unexpectedly lost a family member. Our kitchen is only open 4 days a week, I asked last week (2 days before open) could i come back because i was ready to get out of my rut, they made me wait an extra week. This is me asking about the schedule because they’ve scheduled me like this before (only night shifts) And i think it’s unfair especially without letting me know any schedule corrections and they know my situation. This isn’t a corporation it’s a family owned restaurant.
Not necessarily. I worked at one with a staff that had very little turnover for almost 20 years. The owner would literally give you the shirt off his back - lent me his tuxedo for my wedding. He almost went bankrupt to keep his entire staff during the recession and helped numerous organizations. I worked plenty of corporate jobs, but that is the job I miss most.
Load More Replies...Twenty years ago, i worked out a schedule for my restaurant workers. Only three cooks, do they sll agteed to work a doubke so they could have the next weekend off. Took in account college/ kids. Came in day after posting it to find it gone. Turns out the disyric manager saw it, saw it was in head cooks handwriting ( if you think my typing is bad, my handwriting is worse ) and tore it down. Even when I explained why , she refused to back down and let me repost it. Such power tripping bs.
In that situation, say you'll come in, then don't. Screw 'em, and screw 'em over.
So, she was out of work for two weeks and I'm guessing everyone had to cover for her. Of course she's going to get crappy shifts for a bit. They are probably rewarding the other staff for putting in extra hours for those two weeks while she was in a 'rut'.
"of course"? If that is your honest opinion, you've been way too indoctrinated by the very same crappy system. I worked bars for a decade, and whenever one of my colleagues had an unexpected problem, we as a team tried our very best to fill in and cover them until they have enough headspace to get back to the job - without "getting crappy shifts" or any other repercussion, because this nasty stuff called "life" can happen to ALL of us without warning.
Load More Replies...Had an AutoZone manager trying to make me quit, rewrite the schedule when I got sick. Policy was you had to be out 3 scheduled days before they'd pay you under medical. He rewrote it so my 2 days off were during my time out so they wouldn't pay me and I'd have to work 7 days straight upon return. One of the days he took from me was my Saturday off which we only got one Saturday every 6 weeks. That also meant he took my Sunday from the following week. I notified corporate what he'd done and transferred to another store.
"You can then let them know you are taking on a new opportunity that you feel is right for you at this time in your career," adds Bail. "Finally, let them know you’re willing to do what it takes to make a smooth transition out of your role. If you have this conversation coming from a place of gratitude and a willingness to have a smooth transition, your manager will most likely take the news well and support you as best they can in your final days."
"They weren't paying us an hourly, they have never paid their taxes, they let this one drunk bitch do whatever she wants because she's been there since it opened. Just very problematic and stressful"
In college I worked for a major corporation with convenience stores seemingly everywhere, you worked alone in a store. If the person on the next shift didn't come in, they expected you to stay and work a double, so 16 hours alone in a convenience store. Since I had to get to class I locked the doors and dropped the key off in the mail slot. F*ck that.
Hold your ground with this predatory hiring bosses and don’t fall for their tricks. The change in the work place starts at the hiring process.
Bail concludes by saying, "If you tend to feel bad or guilty about resigning, just remember that your company WILL be able to find a replacement. Also, try putting yourself in your company’s shoes. The company will do what is in their best interest to stay in business, even if that would mean letting you go. Therefore, it is perfectly valid to do what’s in your best interest too.
From my experience though, there is a way to communicate this in a respectful way that facilitates a smooth transition for both parties involved and doesn’t include burning any bridges."
There's always one toxic employee that always seems to have dirt on somebody. Good workers walk but that person never gets fired.
Yes this is so true. And the toxic one gets promoted to management, so the toxic one ends up with authority over you. It sucks!!

My guess, senior employees, or friends/family of management, who know they won't be properly punished or fired, so they feel free to bully newer/non-friend or family employees.

that's not how jobs work, sorry to say. if there aren't rules in place about lunch breaks, to allow for everyone to have one without everyone being on break at the same time, then the boss is doing a horrible job and you should quit.
Ran into similar in 2014 when my coworker quit and they promoted a guy from rigging to my department. He kept going to lunch with the rest of the shop. Sorry dude but you no longer work with them. My lunch is and always has been 12. The guy you elected to replace went at 2. 1 is acceptable but we both can't go at 12. For a man in his 40s, he could never understand this and just kept going with the shop guys. He got moved elsewhere and then finally did us the favor of quitting.
Because how dare an employee attempt to maintain a work-life balance when you're not even paying him overtime
Well, I think this particular horse has been flogged to death several times over, but you US guys should do something about your labour laws and this insatiable and soul-destroying greed for money. Yes, everyone has to live but no, not by exploiting other people. As we say, a shroud does't have any pockets.

My gf has asked for reduced hours at her work for 2 weeks and they’ve been ignored.. today she asked to come in late and this was the “manager” replied
Since I can't come in late today, NOPE, I cannot work late tonight. Keep hoping -_-
When I was going to university, I, and a bunch of friends, worked for a mail delivery company. And when finals came around, all of us took two weeks off to study and take our finals. And it never was a problem for the company to let us have that off time, because they all knew college was our priority, not the job
At least this employer seems to be reasonable, asking to shorten time off by a day or two. Unlike some who are hardliners
Bad thing though, after OP reiterated a second time they weren't available, manager still wanted to push it. Manager has now shown OP exactly what kind of person he/she is and OP might as well get another job because it's going downhill from here.

Today morning, my company HR announced staff not allowed to bring food in to company. Regardless of bought from shop or cooked from home. Company is indirectly or directly forcing us to buy and eat food from in house canteen. Why? I don't know...but looks like want to the canteen profit to go up?? I bring my food from home as I am living with a budget. Is this legal and is there a way I can go about not following this rule
my boss is 100% gaslighting me
"Oh hey, can you postpone your education for a bit cuz we're bad at managing?"
"we are [...] friends with people who know your dad" - is that a lousy attempt at mafia-style intimidation?
"The GM of my now ex-job who cannot rely on the other 6 managers to help him run the store."
80 hours a week sounds like someone who can't manage their time or run a business properly!
got fired over $5
for context: i work at a small sushi restaurant. we have two ways to give tips, one being on the receipts and one tip jar on our sushi bar (which you’d think would be for the sushi chefs). BTW all of our kitchen/ sushi workers are immigrants. typically we give all the tips from the jar to my manager at the end of the night when she closes, and i had been under the impression for two years that she had given the sushi bar chefs (which is one guy who has consistently stayed and carried the restaurant) their righteous tips. that’s what she told me, until i started counting tips myself, also in more recent months i had been told by my coworkers about their actual pay, and how they do not receive their given tips.
anyways, we had a $5 tip from someone the other day and were closed yesterday, so i had the super wonderful great idea that i should give my coworker his tips this time. not to mention it was the middle of our shift which wasn’t really smart. i had done this one other time with i think $2 months ago.
i got a call from my manager this evening, and she prefaced the call saying “is there anything you need to tell me?” i didn’t hide the fact i had given the tip to my coworker after it seemed like that’s what she was alluding to, still “naively” under the impression that they get their due tips, even though i was told they don’t. i’d never heard her so confident in speaking the way she did to me, it was like ballsy taunting. she asked me what i thought should come of us, and i told her i didn’t think it was fit for me to think of a consequence since i was the perpetrator, to which she said “no what do you think should be the next step now?” i said maybe a deduction in pay or to take away the amount i had given to him. at this point i was still unable to really form any concrete sentences, i guess that was part of not realizing the depth of what i had done. she told me she would talk to me on my next shift with the coworker i had given the tips to, and i told her it would be more appropriate about how to go from there at that point instead of over the phone.
then i got this text
my whole heart just sank. i’ve been working at this job for 2 years, my manager was like a sister to me and all my coworkers and i were so close as well. i’ve picked up for when half of the staff was in korea, my manager even told me she had entrusted me with her shifts while she took months long breaks for more personal time even though i’m the one with two jobs (one is more voluntary) and school. i had just been the main trainer for two new consecutive workers the past few months. this week they had me work when i strep and i had even scheduled extra shifts prior to this week for them. i had just gotten a raise as well which felt like a scapegoat for my manager giving me more days to work. i don’t know what to do. this felt like losing my second family. i know what i did was wrong and got caught in the spur of the moment as it had felt right.
i can agree i didn’t act in the most conventional way over the phone, but i really just didn’t know what to say and couldn’t think. i just let the questions air out and thought of short witted responses.
if anyone has experienced getting fired from a job they love, please tell me how you moved on. best to you all
"I know what I did was wrong..." how? OP discovered that their employer is STEALING tips!?
the manager is a s****y person for fleecing so many people out of their rightful tips
Their response cracked me up 🤣 I'm 33 years old I'm not doing a group interview ever again. They're embarrassing and insulting. It's literally the company saying flat out that candidates are numbers they're just shuffling through that day. So while they "respectfully disagree" I will no longer be lowering myself for any company that can't be bothered to one on one interview people. Pathetic.
I went to an interview for a desk job at Sears in the 80's. There were about 30 people in the room at desks. They handed out a weird written test. Two people finished and turned their test in, they stopped the rest of us and told us to leave, those two were getting hired. They didn't even check the answers. I called the location manager the next day and gave him a piece of my mind. He hired me over the phone. Turned out to be a pretty good job.
I’m not surprised. I’m 63, and got my first job at 18 in 1979. That year I got a cost of living raise AND a merit raise. It was the only year I got both. The eighties—-the decade of “greed is good”—-were the beginning of employers totally screwing over employees in ever increasingly cruel ways. When the Labor Board started working more for Management than Labor, and when union busting was picking up steam. Not to mention the gaslighting of Reaganomics and “Trickle Down” being good things, and the cult of wealth worship just kept voting it in, preserving tax cuts for the wealthy so they could take advantage of them too, in case they ever got rich, which they never did. (I remember the news—-which was not corporate-run back then, and had to abide by the Fairness Doctrine, which was another victim of eighties greed is good—-actually calling it “ Voodoo Economics”, which I think 100% nails it.)
Load More Replies...my first ever job, it was a small group interview at pier 1 imports, for a seasonal position. they hired me and a couple of other people from that group, and did brief 1-on-1 interviews before we started work. i still miss that job, it was hard on me physically but so much fun, such a good environment. i also would say i disagree with that take about group interviews; i think it heavily depends on the setting, the job, and the people involved.
I have never (in my 30 yrs of working) have even heard about a group interview. I've even been on the interview committee at 2 of the places I worked.
Holding a group interview either displays a complete lack of management skills or they already know who they're hiring but are forced to interview others. You cannot evaluate a person if there's more than one applicant present. A bad applicant will always feed off the good applicants responses.
Fuck this place. Went and got a better job 3 days later. Let them fire you in these situations! You'll bury them with OSHA fines.
Changed our pay date without notice. Proceeded to claim it will be on the same 2 week interval next check. It wasn't. This is the text exchange with the GM that followed. Turns out she didn't like the owner and corporate supervisor knowing she's been selling expired food.
I've been a GM at 4 locations and over a decade with the company. I wanted to focus on a different career and deliver pizzas while doing online school. Couldn't stand working in this environment any longer though. Went and got a manager job at a not big 3 pizza place for 63k/ year 3 days later.
I should have let her fire me though. Turns out these OSHA fines can completely bury these franchise locations/small businesses. I called the owner following the texts to let him know I'm stepping away. Letting her fire me would have been the best way for them to realize how bad she is at her job.
autocorrect can be more hindrance than help for a lot of people
Load More Replies...If she is willfully selling expired food, she should not only be fired, she should be behind bars. I hope OP reported her to OSHA directly!
Notifying the health inspector will get a faster and more harsh result than OSHA. OSHA is a joke. A health inspector will show up as fast as they can get there from their office. I dated one. Even after hours, she got a call, she was out the door.
Load More Replies...My boss didn’t put me on the schedule this week, when I asked why she told me that she doesn’t need me on the days in my availability and to change it to having the weekend’s off instead of what I had previously been approved for. I had been getting scheduled in this availability for a little over 2 months, and before that I had an open availability for 9 months. I ended up moving around my schedule outside of work to accommodate and told my boss I’d like to be put on the schedule next week. This was her response
So many times people hire people and agree to whatever because they're shorthanded. Then as staff changes, they suddenly want to forget they agreed to a restricted work schedule and blame it on the employee. It's not the employees fault you're a bad manager. Either honor what you hired them for or don't hire them at all. Stay shorthanded.
that tagline under his name is an enormous red flag, gross
Quite a few of these don't fall within the "blissful resignation" set. Either adjust the title or read them and apply some editorial standards, BP.
A lot of states seems to have a fire and quit "at will" approach - anyone can leave or be fired without notice or cause. As such, a contract seems pretty worthless.
Load More Replies...Wow! You guys should have labour laws and protections, minimum pay rates. etc. It sounds like a third world country.
If it's a sith "job", the best time to quit is when it's most inconvenient and costly for them. Manager goes on vacation? Just after he leaves. Huge amount of stock received and needs to be put away (especially food)? Immediately. Don't destroy or vandalize, that's illegal, but quitting immediately without warning when it will cost them the most money is perfectly justified.
