50 Times Hotels Messed Up So Bad, People Had To Vent Online (New Pics)
Interview With ExpertIt’s always nice to be pleasantly surprised by how an accommodation exceeds your expectations. You arrive at your hotel or Airbnb and realize you've got more than you bargained for in the best possible way, making your trip much more enjoyable.
However, things can also go the exact opposite way. This is what we’re focusing on for today, as we share photos of some of the worst rooms travelers had to endure. We’re talking about worn-out carpets, filthy, stained mattresses, and toilets next to beds.

Oh cute little fanged lizards :DDD This is an extra for your room, what else view did you want? Free feeding watching. (Actually it looks like it's a crocodile enclosure, not a pool.)
Yes you can see the three openings behind them and more past that and upper left is another pool. Lucky person got a perfect view.

Why would a hotel be okay with having guests at a hotel with such an unsightly view? I can understand if there was construction or renovations being done, but JFC they can clean this up.
I'm sure there were other giveaways before you came as far as actually checking in...
We had the opportunity to speak with a few experts regarding travel accommodations. Ignacio Merino is currently the CEO of Freetour.com and has held a managerial position in various top hotel chains across the world for more than 15 years. In his conversation with Bored Panda, he shared some hotel industry secrets that the public ought to know.
“When booking, mention a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary in the comments section, or simply write ‘special occasion, please nice room,’” he said, adding that politeness while letting hotel staff know about a special event improves a customer’s chances of receiving perks such as upgrades.
Drove For 14 Hours To Sleep On This
I drove for 14 hours and had a family member book a hotel for me while I was driving. Arrived at my hotel ready to crash and it was kinda gross. Decided to check for bedbugs and found this.
I think bedbugs should be the least of your worries. I wonder if they took down the crime scene tape.
Shudder to imagine.. sleep in the car a better option here

My Hotel Room Opens Into The Lobby Restaurant
Maybe I’m the one out of the loop but I’ve never seen this.
As much as people rip on them, I finally broke down and went to get an omelette after a breakfast bar of watery eggs and only eating bacon. At the one I was at, they had the fresh made breakfast bar down. And it was really good. I was on the 2nd floor and they didn't have any rooms looking out. First floor was all conference rooms. So no. Bartender was pretty cool.
Load More Replies...Looks like they turned a meeting room into a guest room. Probably generates more income.
Stayed in a place in Myrtle Beach SC and they had clearly turned a utility room into a guest room. Beside the elevator, no window, very small. It was clean and we only had to stay 1 night until a normal room opened up. I still can't believe they got that past the building inspector and fire marshal. There's no egress in case of fire.

A Room I Booked In Belgium
They could at least have put a lid/cover on it and where's the seat? as a woman I'm going to fall into the bowl
Perfect hangover room! I had a hotel room in London that was not much bigger - the toilet and shower were in a separate enclosed space. You could not sit on the toilet without having the door open!!! Oh, and the lift was literally only about half a metre deep - I nearly walked into the back wall when I got in!
There are so many things wrong with this, but I am more disturbed by the flexible waste pipe connecting the toilet to the sewer stack. It just looks cobbled together and ready to pop off any second. Just no. I'd ask for my money back and find a bus station.
Idk squat about plumbing and I noticed that? (pun intended)

Paid Extra For A “Tower” Room At Our Hotel And Were Told We’d Get A Nice View Of The River
Darn, sometimes its good to be a chick. I booked a hotel I'd regularly stayed at over the weekend for work. They gave me a corner room and it was tall ship week in NYC. I was totally unaware until I was looking out of the windows. One for the memories. Also, book direct and you will get better service. Look it up on those travel sites and use that to get a better rate.
Price discrimination is another issue, and according to The Broke Backpacker senior editor Aiden Freeborn, it is as real as it gets. As he explained, bigger hotel chains, most especially, track down user locations and may charge higher prices if the individual comes from a wealthy, first-world country. This is why he advises using a VPN when researching hotels and Airbnbs.
“Not only will it save you from price discrimination, but it will also keep your data private from any would-be hackers out there,” he said.

Hotel Room Has A Light Under The Bed That Can’t Turn Off Unless I Also Cut Power To The Sockets
So I’m staying at a hotel tonight and I go to turn off the lights and discover there is no independent switch for the light under the bed.
To turn it off I have to turn the main switch off in the room which also turns off the power for the sockets.
My choice is to now sleep with a light on or not charge my phone up over night. I’m travelling tomorrow so I kinda need my phone on full battery.
Why do hotels have the weirdest lighting setups. I’ve never been in one with a single overhead light. Instead the room is illuminated by 20 smaller wall lights each with their own switch combination.
Yet entirely understandable to not have. If I go camping I’ll bring my own electricity, if I’m staying at a hotel I’ll reasonably leave that up to them.
Load More Replies...I always prepare myself for the fact that it will take 10-15 minutes to study the operation of the lights and I always carry a sleep mask with me so that I can sleep in the dark. Recently, the switch for the reading lights only worked if the "mood lighting" on the ceiling was on from a different switch.
That's why I always pack a sleep mask when I'm spending night somewhere other than home. (Well, the offending light usually comes from windows and not under bed but still...)
I can’t sleep with a ton of light so this would be hell for me
There obviously is a monster under the bed. That nightlight saved your life.
The light is below the bed, you are above it. How much of this do you actually see while in bed?
... A lot? The light doesn't just stay under the bed

Fortunately, some of the erring parties did get their deserved sanctions. In 2022, Australia’s federal court ordered hotel price comparison platform Trivago to pay 44.7 million AUD in penalties for “making misleading representations” about room rates.
The company admitted to receiving about 58 million AUD in cost-per-click fees from clicks on supposed cheaper offers for a specific hotel. In turn, consumers ended up overpaying about 38 million AUD for their featured rooms.

Entire Hotel Numbers With Room Numbers At Random
The host told us to search for room 22, not by the small numbers.
The small numbers are the room numbers, while the big numbers are there for security purposes. I've seen this in a couple places, and the idea is that if someone comes hunting for a guest staying in a particular room, they will likely know only the large number. So they'll be wandering a while, long enough for security to pull them aside and the guest to be contacted and asked if they actually want contact, or want law enforcement contacted.
Why not just set up the lobby so that people entering it are forced to stop at the front desk before reaching any rooms?

Finding A Pin In A Hotel Towel
So I’ll give you a little update. I am here from germany for a nice relaxing vacation in Italy in a 4 star hotel (the 4 stars here would be more like 3 in Germany) This happened on our 3rd day after the cleaning staff had already cleaned the room a few times and provided new linen. I had first dried my hair with the towel and then my body, when I noticed a scratching on my side and then saw that there was a pin stuck in the towel. Luckily nothing more happened to me as the scratch didn’t really hurt anymore.
I immediatly took photos and a short video of this and went down to the reception. They told me that they couldn’t do anything because the laundry was handled by an external company, but they would let them know. I told them, that this could be so much worse for me or other guests and this should not, cannot happen again. They then told me to send them an email with the details, the photos and my contact informations so they could take care of it. I probably should have been a bit more persistent, but this had never happened to me before and I didn’t want to go full karen mode.
This is the answer I got from the hotel:
"Dear Mr. , We would like to apologize again for this incident. Our linen is supplied by the industrial laundry. Unfortunately, we are unable to lay out all the towels to check their condition as they are already folded and ready for use. We will forward photos and inform the laundry and ask them to take more care when packing and folding. We will also ask our staff to take more care when changing linen. Thank you for your understanding. Yours sincerely"
So now i am debating what to do. I would write that this is the least they have to do. And that I couldn’t care less how they do their laundry and bring it to the rooms. I give my money to the hotel for a reasonable stay and not to the cleaning company. And if they don’t accommodate me, I would take legal action.
Tbh, what should the hotel do? I mean, I feel sorry for OP but it's delulu to think that the laundry of a hotel will be checked/washed piece by piece. She sounds like a Karen 🤷🏻♀️
While I sympathise with the Hotel - accidents like this are bound to turn up occasionally - to then not offer guests compensation when it does is totally unprofessional. This is worthy of at least a full refund of the room, which, of course, the hotel co. should then pass on to their laundry.
If I was the hotel manager, I would take 10% off one of their nights stays. That’s what a responsible business person does when a customer is dissatisfied with something that has already occurred.
Just because that's a clean towel does not mean that's a clean needle.
I wish op would have stated what they were expecting the hotel to do. Did they want a refund? Did they want them to change linen companies? Maybe their expectations didn’t meet the level of inconvenience this caused.
And if you went to dry your face and that pin stabbed you in the eye? Would you still accept the motels reply of "it's not our problem"? The motel contracted with the service provider, the motel also accepts responsibility, at least in part, for what they supply.
Load More Replies...OP is not a "Karen" for pointing out a legitimate problem and wanting some compensation for it.
All the comments say she's a Karen, you people are idiots, and the hotel should do something about the quality of their stay. 10% off aint' s**t!
The message was delivered, so why didn't the hotel immediately give them a refund, as it could have been worse if someone had lost an eye?
Just Got Done With My Morning Run And Came Back To The Hotel To This
This is the kind of thing you need to inform guests about the night before.
If this was a sudden leak that needs immediate fix, then there's not helping it. But if it was scheduled repair, then they were way too late.
TBH, isn't that a time interval guests are least likely to take a shower?
My Brother Is In Berlin For A Few Days And This Woman Is On The Wall In Multiple Rooms Of His Hotel
My husband and I once stayed in a hotel room that had a huge photo mural of a $exy blonde in a skimpy bikini top on the wall right over the bed. This was not conducive to the romantic weekend we had planned. Even my husband said he felt "judged" by her. We asked to change rooms but were told that ALL of the rooms had similar wall murals.
The building is beautiful, though! Should've have stopped there.
The Line For The Hotel Elevators After A Conference With 20,000+ People (The Only Stairwell Is Locked)
There’s a stadium that connects to this specific hotel, and a lot of people from the conference (like me) are staying at the hotel.
Locking the stairs CANNOT be legal. What if a fire broke out?? Everyone would be completely screwed!
A lot of buildings lock the stairs at the lobby. You can only open the door from inside the stairwell. This is to stop homeless people and d**g users from accessing the stairwell to either sleep or other activities.
Load More Replies...The stairwells can be locked to prevent people going UP them from the lobby, but have to remain able to be opened to allow someone to come out them in the event of a fire. That's what the crash bars are for. This is standard procedure with conventions in hotels, to prevent non guests from accessing the room floors.
I would have left immediately because of the fire hazard and complete disregard of the Hotel owners for peoples safety
Well, I mean, yeah, but they would still have to use the elevator. 🙂

Drove 5 hours to get to a hotel at 1:30AM. Tried to take a bath to unwind before going to sleep. Handle was immediately loose and now the water won’t turn off. There’s only one person working the front desk who stated she doesn’t know what to do. She said she’ll try to page management but as far as she knows, they do not have someone on call who can fix it
You don't have to pay their water bill. Might be a nice white noise to sleep to?
It could be a real issue as many motels I've stayed in, the drain can't take what the faucet produces. It's just a matter of time before it floods.

Local hospital did parking lot construction for 2.5 years. Stored ALL their materials in the lower level disabled spots. Coincided with a period when I was there for appointments 3-4 times a week. They heard about it every time. (Number of times something got done: 0)
Considering there are many other places to place construction items, this would be a definite ADA violation.

I don't understand why hotels would sacrifice privacy for the sake of so-called artsy designs in their rooms. The owners of these establishments don't see how stupid this is?
Croatia is a country with a big coastline and isn’t known for bad hygiene. Usually if the location is near the sea then shellfish should be fine but you can get food poisoning anywhere.

2am I wake up to an itching on my finger that won't go away. I developed 2 little welts that changed color. I strip the bed and find this little ba***rd. Show it to the front desk and they immediately throw it away. Tried telling me it was just a box elder bug baby. (Definitely not) Got my money back and moved to a different hotel at 3am. Stayed up until 6am washing all of my laundry and showering before I dared touch the new hotel bed.
That's not a bed bug. I had them for over a year, it kept reinfesting, and they don't look like that.
Actually, that is a bed bug or relative of (Cimicidae)

Weird Hotel Pool Is Very Cloudy
I always assume anyways, I just took a shower so hopefully I'm not crawling with parasites or something.
Pool was recently flocked. Probably something turned up in the sand filter that it couldn't hold onto, pollen, or dust, or algae, and they tossed some flock in to get it out. It's completely harmless. Flock, for those curious flock is a chemical that when added to water will cause contamination (pollen is technically contamination) to bind together and then either sink to the bottom to be vacuumed up, or create a cloudy situation for the sand filter to filter out.

The Only Power Outlet In My Hotel Room And My Power Supply
Thank you Novotel. I suppose it’s one way to reduce their power bill - have a single accessible power outlet in the room that can’t be used with my power adapter/supply. Even then it’s on a bench that’s a metre high, so to use my laptop there I’d have to use it standing. There is a bench that I can sit at but with no power outlets - the desk lamp is even hardwired to the wall.
I'd love to know where the OP is holidaying? If they're holidaying in AU/NZ/somewhere else that uses that as their main point, then... well... that's on them. Otherwise, that's just rude. Surely the front desk would have adaptors if what they have in the rooms isn't the norm where they are.
You are missing the point - the plug and receptacle are the same type, but OP's plug is too deep below the blades to fit. OP would need a small power strip or extension cord to use it.

I had been chatting back and forth with the front desk due to an issue with the tub drain stopper. At first I thought this tub setup was some kind of modern quirk because surely you didn’t really have multiple construction workers follow through with installing a bathtub completely backwards. But I’ve been here a few days now and curiosity got the best of me so I asked… and the answer did not disappoint 😂💀
What’s wild to me is that this hotel is five years old, housekeeping visits several times a week if not daily, maintenance had literally just been in my room the day before, and somehow I am the first one to ever bring this observation to their attention. What?!?
Black Specks Floating In My Hotel's Water. I Drank Four Glasses Before I Noticed
Black specks in water is usually carbon from someone replacing water filter and not flushing it for 5 min. I would just ask if the water filter was recently changed, if it was, nothing wrong with it (other than appearance)
Oddly enough, our city had something like this happen (city-wide, obviously) and we were also told the black specks were safe to drink. Not sure I trust it, still. I've got laboratory-grade distillation equipment. I'd really rather have to prepare my water in advance than trust the questionable black specks.

Ok, checked out (left a note in the drawer) for a few days, now back and in a different room on a different floor in a different wing. I have stayed here multiple times and all the desk set ups are the same. Nothing “rotates” or “swings out.”
Once again, installing a right hand drawer under a right hand desk instead of a left and desk. I'd like to say this is just a stupid apprentice on the job but I see this kind of thing everyday. Prime example is where I work. They used a local company for a reno on the building. We supplied the locks and mortices. Certain one for certain doors. Had them labeled. They just installed them w***y nilly so now ones that were keyed alike for offices with multiple doors are who knows where and my area for example, which has 3 doors requires 3 different keys. We did figure out where one of the other mortices ended up but never was able to find the 3rd. And don't think for one second they were willing to come back and fix this screw up. This is just one example of the disaster that i now our new building. And the owners still continue to use this moron.

Stayed in a Motel 6 in Boise, Idaho. First night find out at bedtime there is no hot water. Still none in the morning. Was moved to another room It had been used for storage, had to wait 2 hours for the staff to remove all the stuff and clean the room. Still had no hot water, found out the water heating system crapped out. Also found the smoke detector in our room was covered in tape from the last time the room was painted. Spent the day visiting with relatives, came back to the hotel to find the parking lot closed for resealing. Every guest in the hotel had to find alternate parking, the hotel offered no help finding it. When we checked out, the clerk was offended when we asked for a discount. Later got a $10 per night refund from corporate. Motel 6 then flagged my one-star Yelp review as offensive. Just checked, it's still up on the website.

Not really the hotel's fault. OP should have paid more attention, the dispensers are clearly marked. As long as you quickly dumped out the coffee and replaced it with the hot water, this shouldn't have been too much of a problem.

Honestly, this room looks clean and in good condition. I am assuming that the OP paid bottom dollar for it. If you want a big American style bathroom, you have to pay big American style rates.
Toilet in separate room and sink in the "lobby" section is a throwback. Hotel was likely built late 60s/early 70s.
I think many people have unrealistic expectations when traveling. Yes, it is not unreasonable to expect your room and bathroom to be clean. But if you have paid for a budget priced place, whether in your home country or abroad, then it is absurd to expect luxury accommodations. If you are trying to save money, then your room and bathroom will reflect this.
Also, it is usually best to eat somewhere other than your hotel.

Apparently we tour hotels and then bid on them based on our delegation counts. The one in Portland OR was great, so I hope for the best. This is my first bid as my predecessor did it for this years.
Valid points here but it's still shocking how many people pay for one thing but expect to receive something of far greater value. Luckily in the Mediterranean, we're not letting people get away with the American attitude which is sadly spreading around the world of causing such a fuss that we give in; nope, doesn't work here buddy. We'll happily loudly explain to them in a full reception area that they're trying to scam us and they'll get what they paid for.
