Oh cute little fanged lizards :DDD This is an extra for your room, what else view did you want? Free feeding watching. (Actually it looks like it's a crocodile enclosure, not a pool.)

Ignacio Merino is currently the CEO of Freetour.com and has held a managerial position in various top hotel chains across the world for more than 15 years. In his conversation with Bored Panda, he shared some hotel industry secrets that the public ought to know.

“When booking, mention a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary in the comments section, or simply write ‘special occasion, please nice room,’” he said, adding that politeness while letting hotel staff know about a special event improves a customer’s chances of receiving perks such as upgrades.

As much as people rip on them, I finally broke down and went to get an omelette after a breakfast bar of watery eggs and only eating bacon. At the one I was at, they had the fresh made breakfast bar down. And it was really good. I was on the 2nd floor and they didn't have any rooms looking out. First floor was all conference rooms. So no. Bartender was pretty cool.

Stayed in a place in Myrtle Beach SC and they had clearly turned a utility room into a guest room. Beside the elevator, no window, very small. It was clean and we only had to stay 1 night until a normal room opened up. I still can't believe they got that past the building inspector and fire marshal. There's no egress in case of fire.

While accommodations have their fair share of shortcomings, travelers also commit errors that compromise their experience. According to LGBTQ travel writer and Queer Adventurers founder Lindsey Danis, one of the common errors people make is not thinking through their needs and making sure the accommodations they book match them.

“A little more foresight could’ve saved them a lot of frustration,” Danis said.

Perfect hangover room! I had a hotel room in London that was not much bigger - the toilet and shower were in a separate enclosed space. You could not sit on the toilet without having the door open!!! Oh, and the lift was literally only about half a metre deep - I nearly walked into the back wall when I got in!

There are so many things wrong with this, but I am more disturbed by the flexible waste pipe connecting the toilet to the sewer stack. It just looks cobbled together and ready to pop off any second. Just no. I'd ask for my money back and find a bus station.

From the post: "I showed this to the manager and they barely gave me enough points for half a nights stay. They kept saying that I was okay since I didn’t eat it. EDIT: addition information. I’ve also been a diamond member for a few years. I only received 10,000 points as compensation ~$50 usd worth of points. Even getting those points was like pulling teeth. They told me to call back multiple times to get a hold of the manager. It took me about a month of follow up to even get this compensation after leaving countless noticed with the receptionist and voice mails."

Price discrimination is another issue, and according to The Broke Backpacker senior editor Aiden Freeborn, it is as real as it gets. As he explained, bigger hotel chains, most especially, track down user locations and may charge higher prices if the individual comes from a wealthy, first-world country. This is why he advises using a VPN when researching hotels and Airbnbs.

“Not only will it save you from price discrimination, but it will also keep your data private from any would-be hackers out there,” he said.

Still on the issue of pricing, travel tech entrepreneur and Get Directo founder Marina Guastavino says another common mistake is trusting third-party sites too much when it comes to giving the best deals. This is why she advises booking directly with the hotel or vacation rental.

“Mention the rate you found elsewhere and ask if they can offer a better price for booking direct,” she stated, adding that it works 70% of the time, especially if you are polite and respectful, or if you mention a special occasion as a reason for your trip.

Hotel Room Has A Light Under The Bed That Can’t Turn Off Unless I Also Cut Power To The Sockets

Light shining under a hotel bed with rumpled bedding and dark carpet, illustrating hotels messed up so bad issues.

So I’m staying at a hotel tonight and I go to turn off the lights and discover there is no independent switch for the light under the bed.

To turn it off I have to turn the main switch off in the room which also turns off the power for the sockets.

My choice is to now sleep with a light on or not charge my phone up over night. I’m travelling tomorrow so I kinda need my phone on full battery.

Why do hotels have the weirdest lighting setups. I’ve never been in one with a single overhead light. Instead the room is illuminated by 20 smaller wall lights each with their own switch combination.

I always prepare myself for the fact that it will take 10-15 minutes to study the operation of the lights and I always carry a sleep mask with me so that I can sleep in the dark. Recently, the switch for the reading lights only worked if the "mood lighting" on the ceiling was on from a different switch.

Misleading hotel bookings have been a persistent issue for some time. According to a 2019 report by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA), 23% of consumers have complained about being misled by third-party travel resellers.

Apparently, such scams have become a lucrative business. The report notes that in 2018 alone, fraudulent transactions and bookings totaled a whopping $5.7 billion.

Ewww... memories of a horrible work-related booking at a shabby motel in Mississippi with that exact same model of AC with the exact same colony of mold. I did not unpack, but went back to the registration desk and asked if they had a room with a clean AC unit, and the scraggly clerk gave me cow eyes. I called my employer, told them to get a refund and why, and got a cab to the university where we were having a national 3-day meeting. The university was on break, so they had dorms available for rent. Cost me all of $15 per night, and unexpectedly had an attached bathroom. Something to consider if you are ever stuck in motel h3ll.

its the same as never making a house totally silent for a baby sleeping. always keep the normal level of noise you would if the baby was awake so they learn to sleep anywhere. same principle. never make it absolutely black when sleeping because you will only have that control if you stay home and never go anywhere else.

Fortunately, some of the erring parties did get their deserved sanctions. In 2022, Australia’s federal court ordered hotel price comparison platform Trivago to pay 44.7 million AUD in penalties for “making misleading representations” about room rates.

The company admitted to receiving about 58 million AUD in cost-per-click fees from clicks on supposed cheaper offers for a specific hotel. In turn, consumers ended up overpaying about 38 million AUD for their featured rooms.

My husband forgot his meds there, mostly vitamins but 1 prescription. when i called the next afternoon, they said the room hadn't been cleaned yet, we left before 11am the day before. called later and they claim the meds weren't there. i had a photo and also 1 of the vitamin bottles had spilled so there very at least 2 dozen loose pills. still told they weren't there. plus the lady was really rude when I asked each time. Now my husband has to get a new prescription early which can be hard to do.

“The person at the front desk is a human, too,” French told The Washington Post. “Have some level of understanding of the situation you’re in and how much power they have to fix it.”

This jacuzzi tub is probably old and needs replacement plumbing underneath due to dry rot and Rusty pipes and the hotel is too cheap to pay for it to be fixed.

Checked in to my fair field hotel after work took a shower wanted to change the water coming out the shower head to a jet messed around with it couldn't get it to changed noticed a button looking thing pressed an out pops a battery pack... im like wtf the batteries are all gross and the turn the shower head an out comes a cup of rust water. What is going on... reporting to front desk.

the batteries were there to power a light fixture in the shower head [in the middle, may have also run the head perimeter but can’t tell]…the rust water came out bc she unscrewed the entire shower head including any debris-catching mesh, etc, off the main pipe. I think lighted shower heads are stupid and a waste of money, but this is stupider.

I have a shower head that lights up, but it uses the water power to do it, otherwise it would not be allowed to be sold here. It was a gag gift from my friend, because I'm half blind in the shower without my glasses, and had a history of fumbling with the water temp. The shower head turns blue when the water is cold, red when it's hot and green when it's perfect temperature.

Not Enough Space To Open The Pullout Sofa In My Hotel Suite

Hotel mattress bent awkwardly on a fold-out bed frame in a room, showing a major hotel mess-up complaint.

I was told by the front desk that this was a known issue in some of the rooms since their renovation. The phone in my room also doesn’t work- another known issue from the same reno. Staff didn’t seem to see it as a problem though? No compensation or even apology.

Well if they don’t see it as an issue you make it an issue. I’m not one to act like an arsehole but in this situation I would. If they don’t see it as a problem and they don’t wanna make you comfortable, you make —THEM UNCOMFORTABLE— until they make it comfortable for you. That’s THEIR LITERAL job.

The worst part? It's blue. Blue light triggers your brain to wake. Red is the color to use for night lights because it doesn't dilate your eyes. That's' why airplane cockpits use red and the reason air charts have no red markings. I'll never understand why refrigerator manufacturers don't have red lights that you can set the time on for night use.

The small numbers are the room numbers, while the big numbers are there for security purposes. I've seen this in a couple places, and the idea is that if someone comes hunting for a guest staying in a particular room, they will likely know only the large number. So they'll be wandering a while, long enough for security to pull them aside and the guest to be contacted and asked if they actually want contact, or want law enforcement contacted.

Finding A Pin In A Hotel Towel

White hotel towel with a sewing needle accidentally left inside, showcasing a hotel mess-up caught by a guest online.

So I’ll give you a little update. I am here from germany for a nice relaxing vacation in Italy in a 4 star hotel (the 4 stars here would be more like 3 in Germany) This happened on our 3rd day after the cleaning staff had already cleaned the room a few times and provided new linen. I had first dried my hair with the towel and then my body, when I noticed a scratching on my side and then saw that there was a pin stuck in the towel. Luckily nothing more happened to me as the scratch didn’t really hurt anymore.

I immediatly took photos and a short video of this and went down to the reception. They told me that they couldn’t do anything because the laundry was handled by an external company, but they would let them know. I told them, that this could be so much worse for me or other guests and this should not, cannot happen again. They then told me to send them an email with the details, the photos and my contact informations so they could take care of it. I probably should have been a bit more persistent, but this had never happened to me before and I didn’t want to go full karen mode.

This is the answer I got from the hotel:

"Dear Mr. , We would like to apologize again for this incident. Our linen is supplied by the industrial laundry. Unfortunately, we are unable to lay out all the towels to check their condition as they are already folded and ready for use. We will forward photos and inform the laundry and ask them to take more care when packing and folding. We will also ask our staff to take more care when changing linen. Thank you for your understanding. Yours sincerely"

So now i am debating what to do. I would write that this is the least they have to do. And that I couldn’t care less how they do their laundry and bring it to the rooms. I give my money to the hotel for a reasonable stay and not to the cleaning company. And if they don’t accommodate me, I would take legal action.

While I sympathise with the Hotel - accidents like this are bound to turn up occasionally - to then not offer guests compensation when it does is totally unprofessional. This is worthy of at least a full refund of the room, which, of course, the hotel co. should then pass on to their laundry.

If I was the hotel manager, I would take 10% off one of their nights stays. That’s what a responsible business person does when a customer is dissatisfied with something that has already occurred.

I wish op would have stated what they were expecting the hotel to do. Did they want a refund? Did they want them to change linen companies? Maybe their expectations didn’t meet the level of inconvenience this caused.

And if you went to dry your face and that pin stabbed you in the eye? Would you still accept the motels reply of "it's not our problem"? The motel contracted with the service provider, the motel also accepts responsibility, at least in part, for what they supply.

My husband and I once stayed in a hotel room that had a huge photo mural of a $exy blonde in a skimpy bikini top on the wall right over the bed. This was not conducive to the romantic weekend we had planned. Even my husband said he felt "judged" by her. We asked to change rooms but were told that ALL of the rooms had similar wall murals.

A lot of buildings lock the stairs at the lobby. You can only open the door from inside the stairwell. This is to stop homeless people and d**g users from accessing the stairwell to either sleep or other activities.

The stairwells can be locked to prevent people going UP them from the lobby, but have to remain able to be opened to allow someone to come out them in the event of a fire. That's what the crash bars are for. This is standard procedure with conventions in hotels, to prevent non guests from accessing the room floors.

Pool was recently flocked. Probably something turned up in the sand filter that it couldn't hold onto, pollen, or dust, or algae, and they tossed some flock in to get it out. It's completely harmless. Flock, for those curious flock is a chemical that when added to water will cause contamination (pollen is technically contamination) to bind together and then either sink to the bottom to be vacuumed up, or create a cloudy situation for the sand filter to filter out.

There is a bench that I can sit at but with no power outlets - the desk lamp is even hardwired to the wall.

Hotel Installed Tub Backwards… And Didn’t Notice Until Today (5 Years After Construction)

Hotel bathroom with black fixtures, white tub, and marble-patterned tiles, showcasing a hotel mess-up visible in the setup.

I had been chatting back and forth with the front desk due to an issue with the tub drain stopper. At first I thought this tub setup was some kind of modern quirk because surely you didn’t really have multiple construction workers follow through with installing a bathtub completely backwards. But I’ve been here a few days now and curiosity got the best of me so I asked… and the answer did not disappoint 😂💀

What’s wild to me is that this hotel is five years old, housekeeping visits several times a week if not daily, maintenance had literally just been in my room the day before, and somehow I am the first one to ever bring this observation to their attention. What?!?

Oddly enough, our city had something like this happen (city-wide, obviously) and we were also told the black specks were safe to drink. Not sure I trust it, still. Once again, installing a right hand drawer under a right hand desk instead of a left and desk. I'd like to say this is just a stupid apprentice on the job but I see this kind of thing everyday. Prime example is where I work. They used a local company for a reno on the building. We supplied the locks and mortices. Certain one for certain doors. Had them labeled. They just installed them w***y nilly so now ones that were keyed alike for offices with multiple doors are who knows where and my area for example, which has 3 doors requires 3 different keys. We did figure out where one of the other mortices ended up but never was able to find the 3rd. And don't think for one second they were willing to come back and fix this screw up. This is just one example of the disaster that i now our new building. And the owners still continue to use this moron.

I don’t know why this is a problem. Why do you have to use the desk drawer they clearly don’t intent you to use? They decided to make the desk longer, wider and more useful as a desk by adding the glass. That’s much more useful than a tiny drawer that is never used.

Guy I know got a room one night for he and his wife. Noticed something causing a tented spot in the middle of the bed. Pull back the linen and there is a syringe with needle sticking in the mattress. They left, didn't even bother going to the office for a refund.

Stayed in a Motel 6 in Boise, Idaho. First night find out at bedtime there is no hot water. Still none in the morning. Was moved to another room It had been used for storage, had to wait 2 hours for the staff to remove all the stuff and clean the room. Still had no hot water, found out the water heating system crapped out. Also found the smoke detector in our room was covered in tape from the last time the room was painted. Spent the day visiting with relatives, came back to the hotel to find the parking lot closed for resealing. Every guest in the hotel had to find alternate parking, the hotel offered no help finding it. When we checked out, the clerk was offended when we asked for a discount. Later got a $10 per night refund from corporate. Motel 6 then flagged my one-star Yelp review as offensive. Just checked, it's still up on the website.

Not really the hotel's fault. OP should have paid more attention, the dispensers are clearly marked. As long as you quickly dumped out the coffee and replaced it with the hot water, this shouldn't have been too much of a problem.
