That‘s so kind of him! I hope his colleagues made an effort to find out when his most valued holidays are and do the same for him!

I’d be taking all his shifts during Ramadan and Eid. Don’t care if I don’t get the time and a half, he deserves it.

I've done the same for my colleagues (currently covering for three others to let them have the time off). I do exchange presents, etc... however generally not a massive Christmas fan. I always let those who enjoy it more have the time. Hallowe'en is mine though!

I celebrate Christmas, but if I’m not spending it with my family on the actual day that year, I switch with colleagues who have kids so they can be home Christmas morning with them. I figure it’s good to let the kiddos have a nice day.

I used to work in humanitarian aid and took a lot of these kinds of donations from little old ladies who do nothing but crochet baby hats all day and then drive 5 hours to deliver them so they can go to syrian refugees.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Despite all of the hustle and bustle of shopping, preparing meals, baking endless amounts of cookies and attempting to make time for every single relative, the holiday season really can be a magical time. The end of the year welcomes plenty of time for reflection, and it’s great to have the chance to relax with loved ones during those beloved days off from work.

If you have kids of your own or little ones in your family, it can be exciting to see the magic of Christmas through their eyes, and if you have the time, volunteering at soup kitchens can be a great way to give back to your community during this season of giving. The holidays are exactly what you make them, and in my opinion, it’s always worth it to make the best of them!

I'll never understand the parents that treat their child badly when the come out. Who cares who they love. The parent is the one who looses in the end when the child has enough and continues on life with out them.

Alzheimer’s is such a horrible thing to go through. For the inflicted and family/ friends alike. The last time my grandmother recognized me was on Christmas. Just as my grandparents were leaving from our get together, she looked at me and said my name. She was so excited to see me. I can’t help but cry writing this. She hadn’t known who I was for 2 years prior and never recognized me again after.

    Best Santa Ever

    Best Santa Ever

I whispered to Santa: "He is blind and autistic and is very interested in Santa." He said: "Say no more" and immediately got down on the floor to greet my little man.
He talked to Matthew for a long time. Let him feel all over him. Told him to pull his beard, feel his hat, and talked about his red suit.
Then Santa said have you ever felt a real reindeer. Santa then carried him over to the display area. And had Matthew pet the taxidermy reindeer they had set up. It was great. My heart was full seeing Matthew so interested.

I have a son who has developmental delays and was non-verbal. We took him to see Santa when he was ~3. Knowing he'd be all over Santa's set-up, I told him what my son's disabilities were and apologized in advance. He said "All children are a gift, mom. He'll be just fine.", and then proceeded to take him around the North Pole to see and touch everything before sitting for pictures (while i hovered anxiously in the background, ready to swoop in and speed this up before parents with typically-developing kids started complaining). There was a bit of a line but Santa was completely unfazed and took time to really interact with my son. It's been a decade, and I still think about this complete stranger showing patience and kindness to this curious boy and an overwhelmed mother still trying to process the diagnosis of her baby's significant disability. This was the first time someone (non-family) didn't treat him as nearly invisible. I hope the universe blessed that man with good things.

While Christmas is a time for many of us to gather with our families, it can also be a challenging time for those of us who can’t. If you’ve recently lost family members or don’t have the chance to travel and be close with them, I understand the feeling of dread that the holidays can bring. Over the past 5 years, I’ve only been able to see my family for one Christmas, and admittedly, I’ve shed a few tears the other 4 years.

But just because you can’t see your closest loved ones doesn’t mean that Christmas is a lost cause. The Real Simple shared a piece recently detailing some of the best ways to spend your holidays if you’re on your own, and one suggestion is to find a way to volunteer.

This is so great. Also, I would like to encourage anyone in need to ask for help when possible. Last summer I spent over two weeks in the hospital and mentioned my finances were tapped and being the only one in my home couldn’t go out (spinal surgery post op) to buy anything anyway. The hospital sprang into action and sent me home with several bags of groceries. I was truly blessed that day.

Just because you can’t be close to family doesn’t mean that you can’t make a difference or that you have to be completely alone. Visit your local food bank, volunteer at an animal shelter, buy gifts for children whose families can’t afford any, and donate clothing to unhoused individuals who are out in the cold. Consider fostering a pet or pet sitting as well, if you want to keep yourself from being completely alone. Volunteering can have a profound effect on your mental health and make your Christmas much warmer.

It's beautiful, and very thoughtful. But if she wants them to forget they are in ICU over Christmas, a nurse dressed as a christmas tree is the opposite of that.

While it may seem like everyone you know is spending time by the fireplace with their families or partners, that’s certainly not the case. Don’t hesitate to reach out to friends in your area who might be alone on Christmas as well. You could host a potluck, find a showing of a Christmas film, go look at Christmas lights or find somewhere to dine out with those who are also in need of some company. It can be a great way to bond with others, and it can be a surprisingly cozy way to spend an evening that would have otherwise been alone.

Thankfully, today’s technology also makes it much easier to be without family on Christmas. With the simple touch of a button, you can video chat with your relatives or send e-cards to your friends. And if you’re really feeling festive, don’t hesitate to write physical cards for your family members or send them packages with freshly baked cookies and small gifts to let them know you’re thinking of them. Distance doesn’t mean you can’t send some holiday cheer to loved ones.

It can also be tempting to sulk and complain if you’re not looking forward to the holidays, but if you can manage to find even a bit of joy in them, it will be worth it. Bake your favorite cookie recipe even if you only want to eat a few, and share the rest with your neighbors. Watch your favorite feel-good holiday film, and buy that popcorn that reminds you of childhood movie nights. Take a drive to see the city’s best Christmas lights and drink hot chocolate, even if you have to do it alone. Find the little pieces of joy that you can’t have year round and embrace them.

My Uni faculty did an experiment by taking regular factory farm pigs and letting them loose on a rewilded piece of land. The female pigs built nests of twigs and moss (looks like a dome or yurt) to give birth in just like wild pigs do. They haven't lost their natural instincts through breeding. This makes it even more sad that on farms, breeding sows are mostly constrained into farrowing crates where they can barely turn around for most of their life.

This brings home the fact that Christmas is all about the kids. I burn up reading posts where adults think the their holiday should be perfect and here's a guy who is going through something that most of us (hopefully) will never experience who is undergoing a grueling treatment, then gets up to take magic to hospitalized kids, THEN going to work to take magic to kids. Awesome!

Just like any other time of year, it’s important to take care of your mental and physical health around Christmas. Psychologist Yvonne Thomas, PhD told Real Simple, “Make a conscious effort to get enough sleep, eat right, exercise, laugh, and get emotional support from loved ones to maintain your physical and emotional health.”

"The bottom line is...you still can find ways to broaden and add to your life and, as a consequence, grow emotionally stronger, even...when you might not be in person with your family and friends during the holidays,” Thomas added.

That is an adorable puppy. I'm also going to risk an unpopular view, but if the wife felt a dog wasn't for her or she couldn't cope, I'm glad she put her foot down from the start. It could easily have ended up her doing the brunt of the looking after, and if she felt resentful that wouldn't have been great. I'm sure she wouldn't have been unkind, but far better the puppy got rehomed immediately where it was overwhelmingly wanted.

Agreed. Rehoming immediately beat thing to do for the puppy. And I'll never understand surprising a spouse with a pet. It is such an important decision

    1. Never just spring an animal as a gift to people. 2. Always consult with the adults in the home 3. Animals aren’t gifts. They live for decades if cared for properly and no accidental deaths 4. Animals need loving care and are quite expensive to own over their lifetimes 5. Please don’t give children a pet that they will be expected to be responsible for. They lose interest rather easily and quickly. 6. If you want a family pet, wait for an opportunity like this or until after Christmas. Then rescue the pets that other people quickly abandon for above reasons 6. The pets of the world thank you for these considerations

I did that once. We typically foster kittens but I fostered a dog to see if we could handle two dogs. I worked at the shelter he came from, and I told my husband I wasn't sure if we could do it after fostering him for a couple of weeks. He was mad, I went in the next day and adopted him, and when I got home I said here you go (it was the adoption papers) he couldn't believe it. That was 2016, Guinness is still with us, he's 8 yrs old now his age is starting to show but he's still the best dog.

This 10-Year-Old Sweetie Had Been In The Shelter Since May, But On Christmas Eve, I Was Able To Give Her A Forever Home

This 10-Year-Old Sweetie Had Been In The Shelter Since May, But On Christmas Eve, I Was Able To Give Her A Forever Home

A little backstory on this sweet girl for anyone interested. Her name is Duchess, and she was surrendered in May, where she bounced to a few different shelters. The shelter I adopted her from doesn't know the complete story, but her previous owners have had her for 10 years. She grew up with asthma, and the reason for giving her up was "too many animals." She's probably going to require an inhaler in the future, but she purrs louder than an engine, and I'm beyond excited to have her in my family.

Sadly people have to move accommodation and can't take their cat; old people go into a home, or die; there's severe illness or a family breaks up, and looking after a pet is one complication too many. That's why it's so lovely that other people step up and take the pet in.

For all of yall out there considering adopting an older, feral, semi-feral, or even just shy cat- the reward is beyond belief. My oldest cat, Heidi, was a feral shelter cat. She had been there for a year, refused to leave her cage when the door was left open during days, got fat and lost her muscle mass. She is still a work in progress, though she is now like a normal cat when it's just me and I'm sitting still. The dopamine rush I got the first night that I woke up to the jingle bells of toys from the other room as she played for the first time (probably since she was a kitten).. that made all the time and worry worth it. Within 6 months she had lost the weight and regrew her muscle thicc booty. We are at 4 years this month and she spends nights curled against me.

I agree with CF. I caught a white feral cat several years ago who I could see from a distance had skin cancer of her ears and face. I immediately took her to my vet who removed the remainder of her ears and cauterized places on her little face and body. I was told by members of the feral community who had caught her before that she was too "wild" to be a house cat and that I should let her go. But, knowing that I could never do that ended up providing her with her retirement home. I never held her until her death. But she would come out from wherever when I watched TV in the evenings and would sit with me, watchfully but peacefully. I respected her for her little self and she was wonderful. God speed, Ms Van Gogh!

We have a kitten that might still grow out of his asthma. A tip from a friend if you need to administer an inhaler: get one of those large clear soda cups like from 7-11 or something. Cut a hole in the bottom just big enough for the inhaler, and hot glue it in so it's well sealed. When kitty has an episode, smear a little of a special treat (mine likes lactose free sour cream) inside the cup, and puff the inhaler as you put her head in. It creates a nice aero chamber that isn't as restricting as an actual mask, and won't make them hold their breath like just puffing an inhaler in their face would.

I know I'll get downvoted, but wouldn't it be better to donate toys to the shelter, so more dogs can have a litte fun? That many toys for three dogs seems excessive.

reminds me of once when i ended up on the wrong train by myself into nyc, and therefore missed meeting my girlfriend to get on a train from the city to where we were both going. i was young 20s, hadn't really traveled on my own much, and got totally overwhelmed by the notion of having to navigate from grand central to penn station on my own, with my luggage. a lady sitting across the aisle from me noticed that i was getting increasingly teary and worked up and offered to walk me to the info booth at grand central so i could get some further guidance on how to get where i needed to be. she was so sweet, and just having someone to talk to who could also help me was exactly what i needed right then! if you see someone having a rough time, at least give them a kind word and offer to help if you can, it truly does make all the difference.

The worst part for me as a child growing up getting donated gifts was the shame. I knew I was different because of this and the one or 2 gifts that didn't apply sometimes was hard and disappointing. Looking back as an adult, you appreciate the gestures in a big way though at the time I wanted under a rock. It's a reality.

I swear to god if his reall last name is “snowball”… which I highly doubt… but my god wouldn’t that just be perfect? I think maybe he or the author used it to infer a “snowballing effect”… which is still wonderful.

I so wish I could’ve done similar when my husband passed away in 2018 at the ripe old age of 49. Alas, I don’t sew and knew no one that could do this for me. His belongings were lost to the sands of time when I had to move into assisted living for 7 months. Along with the jewelry he bought me and the jewelry I made for my wedding. Sigh. So many lost trinkets but so many memories none the less.

The phrase "bearded white guy" reminds me of when I was working at a large department store around 1980, when we had the custodian, a black man, dressed up as Santa passing out candy near the front doors. I got a kick out of watching the children's reactions. I don't remember anyone being unkind, but there were a few who looked confused, and some who were absolutely delighted.

Please make a will and make plans for your pup. Say who should have custody, keep all vaccination and vet records in one easy to access place. Some charities will take on pets whose owners have gone into care or passed away, but you need to arrange this ahead of time. Ask your friends and family who could take them or foster while a place is found.

I can't find the link at the moment, but I saw this in my newsfeed a little while ago with a picture of the owner crying and hugging his doggo visiting at the hospital. It also said the RN, Jennifer, will be giving the doggo back to the original owner once he's all better. ❤️

I had a hospice patient who was worried about who would take her cat because she couldn't find a home for him and could no longer take care of him. I wasn't looking for a cat but I agreed to take her sight unseen. She's the SWEETEST cat and I have no regrets.

Christmas day, we'd already had a few "Christmas family celebrations" with more on the way, but the actual day of Christmas we found ourselves alone, my kids went home, his are traveling. We found an opened restaurant, very festive. Sat next to our future selves. We're 60's, they were 80's guessing. It was like some weird reflection. Dinner was great to have no reservations at this trendy spot. The place was hopping, yet we were able to walk right in and get that table next to our future selves. I love Christmas ghost stories. This felt that way.

My dad, being a better chef than my mom, has been the person to handle holiday cooking and baking in our family for as long as I can remember. He still makes dozens upon dozens of different kinds of cookies to deliver to people all over including the mail delivery person. I am a pretty decent cook but still ask my dad for pointers on the reg. But cookies I’ll never be able to aspire to. I tend to burn them and invariably wind up with dough in my hair and on my back. No idea how I manage it, but recognize this is never going to improve as I’m now 50 and still get these results. Leave me with cakes and breads. I can handle that. But hats off to dad. He’s amazing.

I was thinking the exact same thing!! They were not greedy at all and truly seemed to realize that (in their minds) maybe even what they asked was too much. So freaking cool of this group to do this for them…. Perhaps I’m biased as a gamer but I know that three young brothers would loose their ever-loving minds over this.

Oh my heart. They didn't even ask for the best they just wanted something to game on 🥺 this year was the first year I could really spoil my kids and I could only afford a preowned PS4 and they're ecstatic. We've had to ask for help in the past and had donated Christmas presents and they really helped me keep the Christmas magic for my kids through some tough times. Your team is absolutely amazing for going above and beyond! And so is your company for this awesome idea!!

This is so sweet. My parents (atheist) were having a really tight time for a few years. We live in a very remote rural area where wood stoves are the norm - early winter, the local baptist church anonymously dropped off a huge load of firewood for my parents for about 3 years in a row to keep them warm until they got back on their feet. We never found out who exactly was responsible, or how they knew my parents were struggling/back on their feet, but I (agnostic) still have a soft spot for that church and always try to donate to their fundraisers when I can. So kind! As a non-religious person - Churches these days (the good ones) remind me of small towns - people taking care of each other because they’re a community and that’s just what community does :)

My grandmother told me a story about when she and my aunt, who lived with grams while attending college, went to a watercolor show. Grandma saw a picture she really liked. The next day my aunt bought it. When Christmas was approaching, my aunt wrapped it and hid it in her room. Tragically, she died in early December. While Grandma was going through aunt's things, she found the wrapped package - and when she opened it on the 25th and saw it was the painting she had so coveted--

The "Victoria Fish Bar" Team Providing Free Meals To The Unfortunate And Lonely People

The "A" team at Victoria Fish Bar in Whitchurch has decided to be open on Christmas Day. Homelessness has been on the rise in Cardiff, and we think we need to make a difference as influential members of this community. Hence, on Christmas Day 12-3 pm, we shall be open for all homeless, elderly, and vulnerable people, providing free meals to all those who come. We realize that not everybody has the luxury of having a nice warm meal with family and friends at a loved one's house, so we will try very hard to emulate such an experience. So, to those who are homeless, elderly, or vulnerable, come and join us, and we can experience this great time together.

Yes, the government sucks and isn’t picking up the slack. In multiple countries. Kudos to these lovely people for deciding that human lives are worth more than politics ❤️ we really do need to change the system but that won’t happen in a day, and at least these folks made sure some people had a warm meal in their bellies on Christmas, since no one else would do it. It’s not “the public being forced to pick up the slack,” it’s just kind people being kind.

There are orphanages in the US, but we usually call them something else, like Children's Homes, Youth Housing Facilities, or Group Homes. I guess it sounds better than "orphanage". Also, some kids have parents who can't take care of them, so, technically not orphans. There is a Children's Home near me that houses children who've been taken from their parents for various reason (usually drugs or physical abuse). I found out these facilities will let you check an older kid out for the day (after lots of paperwork and a background check). You can take them to the movies, or shopping, or whatever. It's great fun for them, and me.

A Heartfelt Christmas Card From My Friend's Newspaper Girl

"To: The two women (I think) and their dog

Happy holidays from your newspaper delivery girl! I have not spent a lot of time talking to the two of you, but when I have, you've been very kind to me. I'm very grateful for that. And, on a more personal level, I also want to thank the two of you for being yourselves. I apologize if I've made an incorrect assumption, but the two of you are together, correct? As a young queer (bisexual) kid, it means a lot to see queer adults out (in all ways) and about being happy and just living their lives.

Merry Christmas! (if you celebrate it)

I hope the two of you enjoy your movie!

I'm pretty sure that's asparagus. I can't figure out how to cook leeks so they're edible, either. : )

My next-door neighbor lives on a fixed income, and sometimes I give him my empty cans so he can get a few bucks. Today, he gift-wrapped 3 (full) cans of PBR and dropped them off for me as a Christmas gift.

In these times, owning a house seems so much harder. Well done you! Let’s hope in the future it gets easier and more people can share this success.

    "Chelsey,
this time of year, I get recognized and thanked by a lot of the folks on my route, but this year, I wanted to flip the script and thank the people who I appreciate. Thank you for always being so kind and sweet whenever I come up to drop off packages. I just wanted to say thank you, and I appreciate you. There's so much negativity today, so I think there should be more emphasis on those who make a positive impact. Thank you for being you, continue being you, and keep being positive. It's what the world needs right now.

Last year (2022) one of my neighbors' houses burned down. Well, not completely down - but it was gutted. On Christmas Day. Fortunately, they have recovered. They rebuilt their house, and just a few months later you couldn't tell they had ever had a fire. They must have good insurance!

But our quality time for very long hours together), am a bit jealous and more than a bit thinking of kids these days are spoiled? I come close to 4 decades living on this planet and it's hard for me to imagine this expensive gifts (plural!!!)
