There's a special kind of magic that happens when someone aims their camera at a mundane moment and accidentally captures something extraordinary. A bird photobombing a proposal at the exact millisecond it poops. A lightning bolt striking a tree precisely as the shutter clicks. A cat mid-sneeze looking like it's seen the face of God. These are the one-in-a-million photos, and we absolutely cannot get enough of them.

The internet has become a vast museum dedicated to these blessed accidents. Someone's selfie is interrupted by a breaching whale in the background. A baseball captured on camera at the exact instant it collides with a bat, compressed into a ridiculous oval shape that defies physics.

What makes these photos so irresistible? Part of it is the sheer improbability. We live in an age where everyone has a camera in their pocket at all times, yet somehow capturing that perfect split-second still feels like winning the lottery. There's something deeply satisfying about visual proof that yes, that dog's ears really did form perfect wings mid-jump, and no, it wasn't Photoshopped. It's reality being stranger and more delightful than fiction.

    LakotaWolf (she/her)
    Community Member
4 weeks ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

You look at the swimmerets/pleopods (legs) on the underside. The first pair of swimmerets in a male lobster are covered with a hard shell. On females, the swimmerets are thinner and "feathery". A female's tail is also larger and broader than a male's. This one has nothing to do with color in a lobster - blue lobster mutations are a separate rare phenomenon and aren't gender-linked or gender-restricted. So this lobster actually has TWO rare, separate mutations.

    JB

Waves are formed by friction with the wind, not undercurrents. A wave state from one weather system continues, while winds from another creates different waves. So the old waves continue while new waves are made. This means that not only is there no good direction to point your boat (how can you nose into the waves when they're coming at you from two angles), but it means that the wind is all squirrelly and you have bad weather on both sides bearing down on you!

The person who captured a panorama photo where their friend's face appears twice, stretched and warped into something nightmarish? That could be you.

Gallium (\(Ga\)) is a silvery-white metallic element with atomic number 31, discovered in 1875 by Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran. It is notable for its low melting point, around 29 degrees Celsius, allowing it to melt in the hand or from a hot drink. Gallium's unique properties make it crucial for electronics, including semiconductors used in LEDs, solar panels, and smartphones, as well as for high-temperature thermometers.

There's also something oddly democratic about celebrating these photos. You don't need expensive equipment, years of training, or even particularly good eyesight. You just need to be holding your phone at precisely the right moment when chaos decides to align itself into something visually spectacular. It's the photographic equivalent of being in the right place at the right time, except the place is your backyard and the time is when your cat decides to have an existential crisis mid-leap.

Known as "ice crystals" it's not unusual, quite noticeable if you're out skiing, and if they're hitting your goggles or sunglasses they can be quite abrasive, as I found one day when I'd wiped off half of the mirror coating from my Oakleys. Some people might argue that it's not really "snow", but hey, it's frozen water falling from the air.

There are a *lot* of pieces out there - but the area involved is really, really big, so the likelihood of being hit by one is relatively low. Also they track the bigger stuff and move out of the way.

Earth's speed around the Sun is 67,000 MPH. A comet will hit at about twice that speed. So 15,000 MPH is quite conservative.

    Bob Brooce
    Community Member
4 weeks ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Because most comets cross the Earth's orbit at roughly a right angle, the speed of an impact would most likely be almost entirely dependent on the speed at which the comet is falling as the moment of impact. The point of the post is to show what kind of damage would be likely if something important is hit by space junk orbiting the earth. 15,000 mph is roughly the closing speed of two objects in geosynchronous orbit and traveling in opposite directions.

We've seen this onboard of a plane, when my partner and I were moving from one country to another. Something was off with the pressurisation, my ears were hurting bad through the entire flight. Then at some point I took a small bag of crisps out of my bag, and it was completely swelled up. We observed it for a while to see if eventually it would pop, but then I decided feeding myself was more important than this "science experiment"...

The problem is that constant touching wears away the fine details in the carving, both from rubbing and from the acids in sweat and oil from the skin. You can see how the wrinkles on the first two fingers have far less definition than the others.

Sioux Falls, SD Turned Green (No Filter) During A Huge Storm Tonight

Dark green sky over city buildings and a church tower captured in interesting pics answering unexpected questions.

These yellow and green skies are formed by a combination of blue light (from rain, hail, and suspended water) and yellow light (from the sun low in the sky). This storm is particularly dramatic because it’s forming on the inside of a shelf cloud, which are the leading edges of thunderstorms.
While green/yellow skies aren’t a good tool for forecasting severe weather (such as tornadoes), this coloration in the sky will generally only form with deep convection (read: really big thunderstorms). These are the kinds of storms that are more likely to form tornadoes.

I was 2 years old when that happened. We had terrifying tornado drills in elementary schools in NE Ohio. They stopped by middle school. Now kids have shooter drills. Much more terrifying if you ask me. But yeah, a green sky is definitely a bad omen and you need to find shelter ASAP. Even if a tornado doesn't come that hail can be nasty!

I'm in the Southern US and if we see green skies, it means big hail and tornadoes are about to hit you. The greener the sky, the worse it's going to be in size of hail and stronger Tornadoes. I went through 2 EF-5 Tornados on May 3, 1999 Bridge Creek/Moore, May 20, 2013 Moore/Oklahoma City and watched the May 31, 2013 El Reno tornado form on TV from my home in OKC. All 3 are historical and record setting Tornados, look them up on YouTube if you want to see them. Oklahoma is in Tornado Alley, so this is something that we live with all year round now. People who think "Climate Change" is BS, has never experienced a Tornado in December.

NE Ohio here and climate change is real. 4 years ago we went through so much salt, the pet and plant safe stuff. then the next year the only thing we used the snow shovel for was my husband scooping a dead squirrel. last winter the snow shovel was used once to clear a path to the mail box that is shaded all day. I remember hours and hours of taking turns digging out ours and the neighbors cars just 10 years ago. Our neighbors were mostly elderly. So yeah, tornados and hail all year long now.

Entirely depends on the producer, and where it is produced. In places which still makes salt via sun evaporation and sea water salt pans, there is little processing beyond the evaporation

Generally people use epsom salts which are magnesium sulphate. Table salt, or the stuff we think of as “salt” is sodium chloride with the formula NaCl. The formula for epsom salt is MgSO4. I don’t know if NaCl is used as bath soak but it is used as a facial, body, or hand scrub in the same way as sugar scrubs. I needed epsom salt soaks for awhile and learned a couple things. First off- the cheapest store was Big Lots. Like everything from places like that you should know the price elsewhere so you don’t get screwed by thinking it’s a deal when it isn’t. Second- you can scent it with essential oils. Buy real oils, not fake fabricated oils because they just don’t smell right. I add the oils straight to the bag, shaking to mix it and checking the fragrance after giving your olfactory bulbs a break. You become attenuated to smells and need to clear the receptors. (It’s the same mechanism that makes people think their perfume is gone so they apply more and end up with too much.)

Not to us! Our niece and her husband took us on a day trip to Mt. Washington, from Portland, ME. Once we were at the top, I ordered a hot chocolate and wham! it's time to go. Turned out he was eager to go to the LL Bean outlet. We literally spent 20x more time at LL Bean than we did at the top of the mountain. We don't visit often these days. Edited to add: My wife's (before we met lol) boyfriend once spent 3 months in the dead of winter atop Mount Washington; he worked for a TV station and was responsible for maintaining the broadcasting gear. Until 1996, the world record for highest recorded wind speed (231 mph) was from atop Mount Washington.

In the washes (dry riverbeds) in southern AZ, you sometimes see streaks of black sand, which are washed down from the mountains. We called it "iron sand." Some of the grains have tiny garnets attached. We called the garnets "sand rubies." When I was a kid, I collected a whole bunch of iron sand to put in a jar. Key point, wrap your magnet with saran wrap or a plastic baggie, so it's easy to get the iron sand back off the magnet. Once you get some on your magnet, it's impossible to get it all off.

Put together a 1334 piece Lego set of a Volkswagen camper van and literally the very last piece (black curved trim for the front end) was missing. It was an unreal moment. Luckily, Lego, without hesitation, replaced it. I don't remember if there was an accompanying letter or not.

NJ P: I suspect it's "flame test" emissions indicating the presence of particular elements - which might well be present in the dyes, but the colour's probably not the colour of the actual dyes or inks involved. When I was a kid we used to go up the attic in a side building at me grandparents' house, we liked to play there. They lived in a rural area, mostly living off the land, and this attic was used to keep cured meat, a few kinds of nuts, dried corn etc., plus lots of junk, old furniture, gardening equipment etc. Cats roamed up there to catch the occasional mice, and even the chicken used to sneak up if the door was left open for a bit. One of them laid an egg in a hidden corner, probably decades before we kids found it. It looked normal from the outside, but when we c*****d it, it was completely black inside, like a lump of coal. No smell, just a black "stone" egg.

Traditional Pysanki (Ukrainian eggs) were not blown out, they were left to dry out. With central heating, people started blowing them out as the warmer air would spoil them sooner and they could smell. I let a few of mine dry out naturally when I lived in a colder state and my art supply closet wasn’t heated.

Handy if you've got an infestation at home you can't get rid of. Pour some vinegar in a container, cover with cling wrap, poke some holes in the cling wrap. All the flies go in to get the vinegar (they really like apple cider vinegar) and can't get out again so drown. Very effective trap. Put a few little bits of fruit in too if you want.

Cola + Fanta is a staple in Germany and Austria, it's called Spezi and you can buy it already pre-mixed. The drink in the picture is not as weird as it seems. The green is actually from the green glass (look at the bottom of the glass, it's green too). And the drinks don't mix because the drink that contains sugar, Fanta in this case, has a higher density than the sugarless Cola, so they layer if you pour them slowly. Just stir and they will mix.

DON'T TRY THIS!! Every woodworking organisation condemns and recommends against this type of wood burning because, in order to make it, you need to create a voltage equivalent to a high-power transmission line. Problem is, people make this with a disabled and modified microwave and they are 100% not prepared to deal with the consequences. Hell, even experienced electrical engineers and well-practiced experts in the technique have still died from this! DO NOT TRY THIS. NOT AT HOME, NOT ANYWHERE.

A few years ago I had about half a dozen small red potatoes that had started to sprout and go soft. On a whim, I planted them. Come autumn, I harvested 30 pounds of beautiful potatoes. It was so much fun to keep finding more and more as I poked around in the dirt!

No mystery: salt pulls water out of the air, which condenses on its surface, which dissolves the salt, which flows as salt water and evaporates, leaving the salt behind. This is why you need the bulb inside to keep the salt warm and thus prevent condensation from forming.

Just out of curiosity, why did you dissolved and evaporated it instead of just smashing, then grinding it? I'm not familiar with salt lamps apart from knowing they exist, so I don't know if they have anything in them beside salt.

Yes, probably. A lot of domesticated horses live in pastures or corrals and are always walking on soft ground, so their hooves don't wear down. Our horses walk on a concrete area a lot in our corral, so they stay pretty worn.
