It can be satisfying to see a niche thing you love – a book, a band, an artist – become popular in the mainstream. Yet it can also be upsetting. You root for their success for so long, but once everybody knows about them, it doesn't feel as special. That's gatekeeping, the grown-up cousin of "You can't sit with us."
But there is a community that doesn't gatekeep: the Gates Open, Come In subreddit. It's where people invite each other to like and enjoy stuff others might tell them is inappropriate or uncool, and generally have each other's backs. Like the kids say these days, "In the clurb, we all fam."
Bored Panda got in touch with one of the community's moderators, u/Merari01, and they kindly agreed to tell us more about the subreddit. Read our short chat with them below!

Can confirm, daddy's of little girls are awesome. Though in my case, rather than watching princess movies with me, my dad and I watched scifi together. I still remember the first time we watched A New Hope together. He was so excited to show it to me, and I loved it right away even at age 7. Actually, may count as a princess movie. There is a princess in it after all.

u/Merari01 told us that the theme of the subreddit drew them to become one of the moderators for the community. "The internet can be a negative place, full of angry people and content, which in some form makes people feel excluded," they told us via a message. "This subreddit is positive, inclusive, and shows a welcoming atmosphere."
The Redditor believes that people want their feeds to have more positivity. "Having a space that is explicitly inclusionary resonates with a lot of them," the netizen added. While moderating the subreddit's comment section can sometimes be challenging when members get into petty arguments, u/Merari01 is pretty happy with the job overall. "It's a fun space to be in, so, it's not a real challenge."

I have a one-time “friend” whom I called out for racial language (I didn’t call him racist, but said that a word he used could be deemed offensive). He hasn’t spoken to me since. I see him in our local pub every two weeks or so, and he actively ignores me. I’m genuinely impressed by his ability to blank me.

In 5th grade, (for some reason), Kyle's mom brought him inside the classroom while picking up his homework, he had been out sick for awhile. Kyle had very obvious pinkeye. His mom left him with us students while her and our teacher talked for a minute out the door. Merciless, the students bullied him immediately Until I stepped up for a moment and told them to back off. Then they slowly continued bullying and someone said something that resonated with my dark humor bone and I laughed and suddenly I was against Kyle and Kyle if you're reading this I AM SO SORRY I THINK ABOUT THIS A LOT..

A neighbor down the road has been inviting me/us over for 5 years to play Catan (a long, rpg/strategy board game) and I’ve been making legitimate-seeming excuses the entire time. Because on our first meeting after he bought the property one of the first info he told us about himself is that he’s a dog person. He fricken hates cats. Said he had two dogs in quarantine awaiting approval for release on the island & was going to adopt a few more. I pointed out that we have two dogs, but also deal with the feral feline capturing, spaying/neutering, chipping & releasing and we’ve got a few who’ve made home on our land. He reiterated his dog love/cat hate & sarcastically said he hopes wild boar or his dogs don’t get ‘em. Who says these things? Who hates a specific animal so much? No, Bryson, we won’t play board games with you cos your hatred for cats is creepy.

We can gatekeep many things: the recipe for our favorite pasta, where we bought our fabulous shoes, our favorite sports teams, and many other things. In 2022, Vogue actually chose "gatekeep" as the word of the year. What, according to them, used to mean institutions or people withholding power now means not sharing information or access to something.
On TikTok, not gatekeeping means sharing where you got that sweater from and how much your tickets to see Taylor Swift cost. But Vogue writes that this is slightly ironic: if anything, the app made information and the world itself more accessible than ever. Although I'm an advocate for better wages, I also want remuneration to be fair... An unskilled job should pay less than a skilled one or a profession that requires more responsibility. Also, risk is a factor that should have a premium. I do the work I do (semi-skilled/self taught and self employed FSE) for an acceptable wage because I couldn't mentally cope with the profession (highschool teacher) that paid better and came with more benefits...

What is skill though? People who are burger flippers become very skilled at their job, it's usually super high stress, fast paced work with dangerous equipment and food another human being is going to eat and not get sick from. In my mind most burger flippes are more skilled than most CEO's but the wages do not reflect that at all

Some background from a few different sources: The parade took place on one of Portugal's independence days. Not THE independence day of Dec. 1, rather the bloody coup of April 25 1974 that ended the ultra right-wing reign of almost 50 years. The parade was going past his house and he was out waving the national flag. At some point, he beckoned one of the parade goers over. The whole parade just... stopped. The entire line. Cautious & not sure of what to expect. The person he waved over went over and they did their thing (video via the link at the end). When they hugged, the line cheered. The photo was snapped afterwards. I haven't seen any follow-up but there's a lot of speculation at what made him so emotional, from him having to grow up closeted, to having or lost a loved one, to remembering the times before the coup & what had to happen. And that's where gatekeeping comes in. In essence, we gatekeep because we're insecure. Putting others down is one of the ways we cope with insecurities. I vaguely recognized the name of the game but skimmed over it and then was confused when I read "accidentally flew onto his island" (I thought 'dang, dude's rich! He has his own island!'') and then I re-read it and saw the uncapitalized words Animal Crossing. It's a title, it is supposed to be capitalized! I missed it because it wasn't. How hard is it to hit the Shift key/button? *I'm not actually that annoyed, but it does bug me how lazy people are about halfway -or more than halfway- decent spelling and grammar*

Just going to be honest when guest's came over, (unless they were here for my birthday or another holiday that had lot's of activity) my parent's would let me vacate to my room and take frequent breaks when guest's came over. In my town there's a new library with a room with access to free wifi, coding programs, a 3-d printer, and of course e-books, books, C-ds, and audiobooks. There's also a genealogy center so you can trace your heritage and a teen room with games and crafts. There's also private study rooms, and conference rooms, and there's classes for everything imaginable. And it's all free with a library card!

My town just had a library built! We have been paying taxes to a library district for decades, but the closest one is 40 miles away. Finally, we get a real building! Not everything is available in a digital version.
Perhaps now more than ever, division into insiders and outsiders is hurting us all around the world. Byrne suggests that some political leaders thrive on sowing division with the "us against them" mentality. In reality, there must be very little that's actually different about us.

There is a similar photo to this pic with my extremely white Irish family. My cousin married a Hindu, and you'd better believe that my family took it seriously. The Grooms family were all like, 'that's fine, it doesn't have to hang perfectly', but they were all like, 'The hell it doesn't! This is going to be PERFECT, because we're not gonna be the ones that disrespect your culture.' Gramps apparently even said 'I'll stop the fecking wind if I have to!'. The mother of the groom took a photo of just our side of the family so she could show her neighbours 'how it should be done'. My aunt was so proud she has a copy of the photo centre stage on her mantle. I'm gutted I wasn't able to attend, because it was apparently the best wedding the family has had yet.

I lived in India from ages 2-8. My mom is married to an Indian man. They often travel between California & Kerala. I’ve been back more times than I can count and for a decade+ I went back every year to continue my education/training. I was raised by Hindus and exposed mostly/only to Hinduism. I’m not religious, but if I had to pin it down I’d say I’m a nonpracticing, fair weathered Hindu in the same vein as many white folks who were raised with Christianity claim to be. There are plenty of white Hindus. There are plenty of white multigenerational Hindus who live in India.

I never waited tables or worked retail, but I spent years in customer service related jobs. I know what it’s like to be spoken down to, yelled at, insulted, threatened, propositioned by gross people, and generally mistreated by other human beings (who only hold that title by a very thin thread). I’ve had people make obscene calls just to get their jollies, I’ve heard people arguing really nasty to each other, I’ve even heard violence happening on their street outside their homes (gunshots). So I’m nice to service people who I can tell are doing their best. Being nasty and condescending toward them doesn’t actually make them do any better. It does, however, shake their confidence and make their performance actually worse, as well as make them hate you and want to get you to leave quickly. Being kind, patient, and understanding when things get difficult and stressful (like being shorthanded in the middle of a huge rush of customers), makes people actually try to do their best for you, and remember you if you ever go there again. It’s an old saying, but true: You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.

Our children are reprimanded if they don't say please and thank you to the servers... They are very good about it as are we... Sadly, the servers often seem surprised at the simplest courtesy

Exactly. You can like a lot of things without having to be an expert and know even the tiniest and most obscure facts about it. I like art and music, but I’m no expert. I just like how certain works make me feel, so it’s more of an emotional interest than anything. So don’t stand there and test me on names, dates, styles, etc, just to see if I’m a “true fan”, ffs. Most of my siblings are OCD, bean counter types that know and memorize everything. It is so annoying. I mention that I liked a certain film and they go off on the inconsistencies, the historical inaccuracies, or even the unlikeliness of the happenings. I told them that I just thought the star was a hunk and I loved the horses.

That's how I feel about everything in the climate debate. I see a lot of people argue things like "giving up plastic straws is stupid because the real problem is the big oil companies (or whatever)!" While it is very true that the ones who will make the biggest impact on climate change are the biggest corporations, that doesn't mean that I shouldn't do what I can to reduce where I can. At the very least, it helps reduce my anxiety over a huge problem over which I have little control.

Exactly. I do what I can. The single biggest thing I did was move a (fairly significant) investment portfolio to one that actively avoids things like fast fashion (as well as the obvious arms, tobacco, etc). If more of us do this, then the more disruptive companies will have to change.

If you live somewhere that it won't break your budget, you can also make more responsible choices about where you get your animal products. I live in the country close to a lot of farms and buying meat and dairy and eggs directly from the farms is often cheaper than the supermarket, and I know that the animals had a pretty nice life out in the fields before they became my dinner. The dairy farm up the road even lets me say hi to the cows. Jersey cows are lovely, and very appreciative of neck rubs.

I switched my breakfast and lunch everyday to Vegan and only have meat in moderation (once every 2 weeks and chicken or fish twice a week). You don't have to be a hardcore radical to improve yourself and those around you.

Interestingly, some people see gatekeeping as a good thing. In an article for The Cut, Ann Friedman suggests that some communities gatekeep to preserve their culture. My school was very good at giving all the options. While I was there, we had a stream for people who wanted to do a vocational certificate instead of the regular high school certificate. They did two days of school, one at a vocational course (TAFE/VET) and two at a work placement. The careers coordinator was great at giving everyone, regardless of stream, all the options and encouraging them to choose paths that they would be happy with.

My son graduation HS last summer but was lost on what to do next so he spent several months hibernating/stagnating in his room. After butting heads one too many times I gave the ultimatum to a) get a job, b) go to school (trade/college etc) or find something to fill his time with. We found Job Corps not long after. He selected his focus as IT & bookkeeping (he is not a people person). They told him it was a 2 year program... He finished it in 6 months. They gave him some responsibility as a dorm aide and that went well so gave him more. They just hired him to work FOR JC! I tell him how proud I am of him for taking that bull by the horns and running with it. Dude can now write his own ticket and go anywhere in the US he wants. He is doing better than I with a bachelor's degree!!

Yes on the soil level unless it's a mound to begin with. But getting flat is very difficult. Vegetation is very hit/miss on what and how it changes so isn't a reliable clue. It changes from site to site and body to body. Decomposing bodies are very basic (pH) so alter the soil chemistry that way. If they start in an acidic environment, like a pine copse, pH can balance out decently but that means you can get growth where there wasn't before. Soil is also percolated when burying, which increases plant growth. Plus the decomposing body causes the mite population to explode, which also helps the nutrients. But the high pH + other trace compounds like sulfur can stunt plant growth. So you can see it's pretty chaotic to predict.

During the time my depression hit the hardest, I worked two to four nights a week in a bar. However banged up I was, I left my problems at the doorstep and put on a smile to give those folks a good time, because that's what you're going out for (as a patron). When I came back home and got into bed, alone and in the dark and quiet... that's the part I don't want to remember. That's when everything came back. /edit: I've been better since then though and I have an amazing therapist who's doing their best to further improve this 😊

Your world will open up and become a lot more interesting and exciting—-and you will become a lot more interesting and exciting too. When you learn about things outside your own little bubble—-not myths and legend, but actual facts and science—-you stop fearing them, and lashing out from that fear. People once ran and hid in fear from solar eclipses because their religions taught them that the sun going dark meant the world was coming to an end. Of course, if that ever actually happened, then they’d be right, but that’s not what an eclipse is. Then we started putting those teachings and the irrational fear they fostered aside and started observing and learning instead. We found out that solar eclipses are harmless, unless you look directly at them without protecting your eyes. That’s why we now look forward to witnessing them ourselves, and we take our children to see them. We don’t fear them anymore because we’re taught about them, and understand what they really are. Secular knowledge dispels all the fears that religious teaching, which is based on a 2000 year out of date understanding of the world, fostered for millennia (way WAY too long).

This whole bathroom thing is SO stupid. I mean, I'm NOT going to grab someone's crotch to see if they're in the "correct" bathroom; not sure about anyone else. I'm going in there to relieve a bodily function, and that's about it. My only concern is if the person in the stall next to me has a spare pad or tampon if I need one. When I was in my late teens & early 20's and out all the time, if the woman's bathroom line was too long, I announced my presence and went into the men's room. I don't recall any complaints, because I was there to take a p**s or drop a deuce, not check out the sausage display.

Ok. I get that and I agree with it. But let's put good and lockable doors on every stall. Let's get rid of urinals. Let's have baby changing stations and breastfeeding lounges in every bathroom. The people who think trans women using women’s bathrooms are going to be attacking the women and girls in them have it all wrong. Sexual predators, including pedophiles, who would dress up as women to gain entry into those bathrooms would be so incredibly obvious they’d give themselves away. Why? Because trans women are living as the women they actually are meant to be. They would be in those bathrooms to do their bathroom business and leave just like every other woman and girl in there. They won’t be hanging around and they won’t be bothering anybody, ffs, or they’d be immediately reported to the business’ management and security sent to get them out of there and escort them off the premises—-if not have them arrested. Besides, women are more apt to help and protect another woman, and a trans woman, who is becoming the gender she should have been born as, would simply be another woman joining the sisterhood, and therefore protect another woman, not attack her, ffs. Also, have you noticed how the people against trans women going into women’s bathrooms are oddly silent about trans men going into men’s bathrooms?

The only place you're sharing, is the place where you stand in line or wash your hands. And if people have to use the bathroom of their birth sex, that means that trans men have to use the women's bathrooms, so there'd be even MORE male-looking people in the women's bathroom. I have MDD, I have been going to my Psychiatrist for more than 20 years. My husband is a BCPP which is good because he will sometimes meet with my Dr. to discuss treatment options. If you don't get the right treatment or go undiagnosed it's harder to find the right treatment or medication it's harder to treat.

Back in the day when I had to give a book talk on this subject to a class of 4th or 5th graders - it was the 80s so I'm not sure - one of the kids asked me about this. I recall I told him that sci-fi is concerned with things that are extrapolations of what science knows now, taking that line into the future. Fantasy starts with the premise that anything is possible and science and logic have little or nothing to do with it. I don't know how true that is.

We had the same veterinarian for many years until he passed away. The man was incredible. He was so allergic to cats he had to take allergy shots to keep from breaking out in hives. Yet he based his profession on taking care of them. I am sure that when he crossed over, there were thousands of cats and dogs waiting to greet him. Thank you Dr. Chennault. I can go off on a monumental diatribe on this one and how I suffered through an eating disorder that hospitalized me and kidney damage that I’m still managing. And I came of age in the 80s and early 90s. There has been a gay male body image crisis for decades. Growing up in the Castro made me aware of the gay clones of the 70s & 80s with their white tees, jean shorts & motorcycle boots & mustaches & how that not only signified queerness, but defined what was required to be an included gay male in the so-called “community.” There was a 180 after AIDS hit, but by 1990, fitting into an image once again became more & more pronounced. Now it’s reached epidemic proportions because most of these young guys have no clue what had happened. The sad part is it’s almost always based on the internalized shame of queerness being challenged by toxic masculinity.

It might take a while to find them, and you might try out some people who fit or don’t fit before you finally find “the one”, but just hang in there. You will cross paths with them eventually—-and hey! use all the means of communication we now have, because it’s so much easier to connect with more people all around the world. Your perfect person might be living in another country and surfing the internet one night when they come across something you wrote or commented, and they decide to engage with you long distance. I have experience with this, as it’s how I met my now husband of almost 24 years, way back in 2001, before it was more common. I’m in the US. I put a description of myself on an internet penpal site. He’s from the UK, and was surfing the net one night and saw my posting. He liked what he read, and we started out as pen pals. We later graduated to talking on the phone (thank goodness rates were cheap). He eventually crossed an ocean to marry me all those years ago. If it wasn’t for technology, we would never have met.

I’m a music obsessed individual, I’m a vinyl lover, I’m a huge fan of live music, I’m normally to be found immersed in something noise related, I listen to all sorts of genres, variety is the spice of my life.. My partner loves music but she’s limited by her illness to listening to small chunks of music or she’ll end up getting totally overstimulated and that’ll slay her, she’s more interested in mainstream music. We share a love of music but we approach it from different directions and in very different quantities. There’s no wrong way to love music.

This is so important. My partner and I were brought together by our mutual passion for certain types of music. We have a lot in common, and I feel so fortunate that I get to share so many of the things I love with the person I want to share my life with. However, we don't have ALL of our interests in common. She's not interested in protein structure, she's not interested in expanding her knowledge of literature beyond her few favorite books, she's more selective when it comes to music genres than me, and starting conversations with strangers is NOT her idea of a good time. And that's fine. I can do those things by myself or with other friends and family. You can have things outside of your partner and still have a strong, loving relationship.

This is bad one... let's not call abusers out for being abusers because its due to a disorder? Sorry.. Pedophilia is ALSO a disorder, should we just let them have their *feels goods* about themselves? NO.. Abusers need therapy, lots of therapy depending on their disorder, but that doesn't give them a get out of jail free card. I was raised by a narcissistic abuser and I won't refer to myself as a survivor because almost 40 years later I still have deeply ingrained issues that interfere with connecting to even my husband and children in a deep and meaningful way.

Sadly, this is true but it's no excuse. Narcissism is a choice, and that choice is Evil. To put oneself before others at the expense of others is a choice. And that is how Evil is defined; selfishness, greed, cruelty.

Is feeling hemochromatoicy the appropropriate term for the not being able to access more meme’s about inclusion because they’re now caught behind a Paywall? Is there another more appropriate term for too much irony? Or do we just now use the term “Panderish?”

BP WTAF!?!?! Unless I subscribe I have no access to MY OWN FREAKING POSTS or responses to them once you cut the original post from 99 to 50? And then go on to say that BP gets "support" (that is, money) from advertising? Do you not see a small inconsistency? Everything costs money.
