Everyone has their workplace horror story. It could be about the terror boss that’s the source of your Monday anxieties or policies that make your professional life a living hell. Today, you’ll see a series of photos involving a little bit of both and everything in between. 

It’s a collection of snapshots from employees showing the workplace absurdities they deal with regularly, if not daily. For better or worse, these individuals have shined a light on how certain companies operate and how people become when placed in leadership positions. 

Some restrict an employee’s toilet access. Others implement 100-hour work weeks and even engage in illegal surveillance activities (yes, you read that right). And these dumbfounding photos are only a handful of many others.

In the US, there are many laws protecting workers and unions, but the agencies that inspect and enforce them are woefully underfunded and understaffed. Easy to figure out why from who gains from that situation.

I have friends who got good paying software engineering jobs at Amazon and didn't stay there a year. When I was telling them our company decided to bring us back on the hybrid model after COVID (3 days in the office, 2 days remote) one of them said oh Amazon has been doing hybrid forever: 5 days in the office, 2 days remote. Whenever Amazon recruiters message me on LinkedIn I'm like hell no find someone more gullible and less informed

In California this is illegal - know you're rights and sue (I'm sure you can gather enough people for a class action given how notorious Amazon has become for stuff like this).

It funny how the same company in different countries can have such different work practices. Here in the UK, Amazon is generally considered to be a good employer. I think that this is down to UK employment laws that are far stricter in favour of employees than they are anywhere in the US and here in the UK anyone who is an employee for any company has the right to join a trade union if they wish to and there are at least 3 national unions I can think of that warehouse and transport workers can join.

The idea that individuals can effectively boycott a multinational corporation is only maintaining the problem. Buying your paper towels and USB chargers elsewhere — most likely from another greedy corporation — changes nothing. Real change comes from extended workers' rights, proper business regulations, and fair taxation.

The factory I used to work was like this. This and their other rules finally got to me( I suffered from depression and anxiety always) I had to quit before I had a full blown breakdown. I was that close to ending my life.

I worked for Amazon for a month. I had the runs and had to keep going to the bathroom with someone checking on me to make sure I wasn't goofing off. I told him next time I would just s**t in a corner somewhere, and believe me, there are a lot of hidden nooks and crannies in a warehouse. He looked embarrassed. I quit a couple of days later. I cancelled my Amazon prime and haven't given it much thought ever since.

Just have to say as an Amazon warehouse employee, this post is complete and utter b******t. You can go to the bathroom any time you want. However, if you start disappearing 30+ minutes at a time several times a day, they will give you verbal then written warnings for time theft, but you would have to seriously be taking advantage of this. Now, the old thing where drivers were pissing in bottles on their routes? That was totally true but has since been taken care of and fixed, and trust me the company was super ashamed and embarrassed.

Not sure. I know 2 people who worked in Amazon in CZ, Europe. And one of them told me that no one cared about bathroom breaks, you could go anytime you wanted, but when you had a regular breaktime - you had to go quite a way, so you spent a lot of time on the way to and from the breakroom that took a lot from your breaktime

Get a note from your doctor that you need to empty your bladder more times than the "average person" Make it a medical issue, they would have to let you go to the bathroom when you needed to.

They're also famous for having warehouse workers clock in and out at their workstation, but it takes them a long time to reach it or to leave because of slow security lines at the gate. In other words add in an extra hour a day you spend on Amazon property without getting compensated, because they are stingy with their resources but don't give two craps about wasting your time.

I have a rare form of diabetes, (diabetes insipidous) that makes my kidneys constantly kick out urine. I had a manager tell me that I had to wait until the rush was over before I could pee. I pointed at a drain on the floor and told her, "Either I'm going in the bathroom, or I'm peeing in this drain. Take your pick!" I was fully prepared to drop trou and squat! She could see I wasn't kidding, and let me use the ladies room.

isn't this the way in many places? School, assembly line jobs, surgeons, cashiers, etc? I've had many jobs where you go on your break. This person is not citing a medical necessity and they said they got a verbal warning.. I'm not here to cheer this but it doesn't sound" comically toxic". .....EDIT: I have reviewed OSHA mandates.. An emergency cannot be denied, and Paid bathroom breaks must be allowed, Within Reason.. I do not know the story of this person, perhaps they clocked in and then left to go to bathroom .. sometimes the safety of coworkers are affected by absence .. anyhoo. expecting your downvotes soon

This is ridiculous. Where I work, if you need the toilet, you go. If you want to have a cup of tea or coffee or a snack while you are at your desk doing admin or between patient appointments then you have one.

That is wild. I think those horror stories come from the fulfillment centers. I work in an Amazon delivery station (3 different sites so far) and that is not an issue whatsoever. We can go to the bathroom any time we want, though we do need to get a manager to cover depending on what job we're doing. There are ppl that take multiple long bathroom breaks and you know they are on their phone in there and the mgrs just grumble about it, nothing ever happens.

I wouldn't quit I'd 1st see my doctor for a note letting them know I have to go because you know sometimes you just have to go. Then let them write you up till they fire you. Next take all your paperwork to the labor board! If you quit you aren't able to get unemployment, they fire you and you have the possibility of getting unemployment and the labor board would take issue with him for not letting you go to the bathroom.

Not getting paid a fair minimum wage isn’t even the worst part. Survey data published in a 2017 report by the Economic Policy Institute revealed that 2.4 billion employees in the United States lose $8 billion worth of salaries each year because of wage theft by their own employers. 

Salary issues cause resentment toward the employer, which destroys trust, productivity, and, ultimately, the overall working relationship between the employee and the company. It should go without saying, but it seems many people need a little reminding.

It would be reasonable to surmise that big-name companies comply with labor laws to avoid bad press that may tarnish their reputation. However, the harsh reality says otherwise. 

A 2023 report by Bloomberg Law revealed mounting accusations of violating numerous labor laws against coffee giant Starbucks. The company lost 16 out of 17 cases, eight involving alleged discrimination toward unionizing workers. 

According to the analysis of judge rulings, the company supposedly told employees who contemplated unionization that their employment conditions would be “up for grabs” or “start from zero.” Another Bloomberg report claimed that Starbucks “illegally” fired 17 union activists.

On Starbucks’ Standards of Business Conduct website, the company affirmed its commitment to labor laws, stating, “All partners are entitled to work in an environment that is free of harassment, bullying, and discrimination.” However, these accusations seem to show the opposite.

I'm employed at a large meat manufacturing / packing plant, and due to improper ventilation / exhaust of industrial ovens, production areas filled with smoke, along with elevated CO2 levels. Every shift has safety managers, but they signed off on allowing production to continue across two shifts. Smoke made everyone's eyes constantly water, was almost impossible to breathe after a full shift, and those that did go home sick were still penalized with attendance points. No care for employees or their safety and well-being, managment only worried about numbers and making company owners more money. HR response is if safety says it's fine, then it's fine. Would have quit on the spot if I didn't have a family and mortgage to provide for.

If you're an employee struggling financially, imagine seeing a message first thing on Monday morning saying you're not getting paid indefinitely. You're behind on rent, your credit card bills are mounting, and now, you don't know when the next paycheck will arrive.

This was my first day hired. I think they're just really busy, have been away from the office for a while, and didn't realize it's absolutely disgusting.

I actually was given this chair and cubicle but I wandered around to orient myself, found two other chairs that were in a cubicle that appeared to be vacant, and snatched them. I also found some chlorox wipes, and cleaned the cubicle a ton (metal on walls, desktops, phone, etc.).

Getting more frustrated with the situation, I took a picture after cleaning and went back to the nasty chair for a picture. I still do not know what this stuff on the chair is and I'm still horrified.

Instead of subjecting yourself to an unpleasant working experience, it would be helpful to see some warning signs before signing a contract. Recruiter/podcast host/LinkedIn influencer Joel Lalgee mentioned five red flags to look out for: poor communication, ghosting, endless rounds of interviews, repetitive questions, and untrained interviewers. 

Carta’s head of inclusion, equity, and impact, Mita Mallick, recently wrote a piece for Harvard Business Review, discussing this particular matter. She urges candidates to ask follow-up questions to clarify any concerns.

Here’s an example: if a recruiter says the company has a small team but offers an opportunity to “make an impact,” it could be a sign that they are understaffed and the employees may be overworked. Mallick then encourages asking about how the company budget has changed and whether or not it increased its workforce.
