50 Times People Found Something So Ridiculous At The Thrift Store They Just Had To Share
Shopping at thrift stores is great: you can find something authentic, it doesn't hurt your wallet, and you're helping the planet by not contributing to overconsumption. In 2024, roughly 90% of Americans and Canadians engaged with a thrift store through either shopping or donating. And Gen Z is leading the trend, with 60% thrifting monthly.
Nevertheless, lately, thrifting lovers have noticed a worrying trend where second-hand goods are often pricier than their new counterparts. So much so that they've been posting the prices online and shaming thrift retailers. We've collected the funniest and most absurd examples of ridiculous thrift item prices and will present them to you here, Pandas!

Cocktail Umbrellas $12 Each
Seen in an antique store, so possibly vintage? Still this is one of the most ridiculous things I've seen in a second hand shop. And the pink one was ripped! Saw a listing on eBay where you could buy 25 vintage ones for $20. And new you can get about 145 for $9 from Oriental Trading Company.
Sooo a fun fact about them, there’s one company that manufactures them for hospitality and they haven’t changed their patterns, sticks ever - the only change was having a paper or pink plastic hoop that props it up. They will never ever be worth anything unless the company keels over
goodwill is a "for profit" enterprise...i don't know why people donate to them....give to and shop at salvation army or a hospital thrift shop..
I Just Get Mad When I Go Now
Some little Mexican lady that spoke little English came up to me while in goodwill and said, “I no afford anything, this donation yes?” Made me so sick, these prices are ridiculous.
I worked at Goodwill and I had to tell a woman who didn't speak much English she didn't have enough money to afford the clothes she was buying for her young son. After a while of figuring out what she could/couldn't afford, she left (I hadn't gotten my first paycheck yet and I was 16 or else I'd have bought everything for her.) Once she was done, these middle-class white ladies came up and were like, "If she can't afford shopping here, she shouldn't be here" and I'm like... This is a Goodwill??? Where else can she go???
I would’ve rung everything up as 25 cents and let her walk out with the clothes and enough change to buy her kid some toys or herself something too. F**k Goodwill and their greedy overblown prices. They’re targeting the absolute WRONG demographic, and going absolutely against their own original purpose. When I was 18, working full time, and furnishing my first apartment, I went to Goodwill and other thrift stores to buy furniture, small appliances, dishes, and pots and pans. Now this was 1979, so please adjust the prices that I remember paying for inflation. The big frying pan I bought cost me 25 cents, the saucepan was 10 cents. My (big and so comfy I wish I still had it) ANTIQUE couch was $50, and the matching ANTIQUE chair was $20. I bought a working coffee pot for $5, and a toaster for $3. THOSE are genuine Goodwill/Thrift Store-type prices. Not $6000 for a f*****g afghan.
Load More Replies...Goodwill execs average $500K to $800K. They make a mint off all those donations.
You're always better off with a good, old fashioned, neighborhood thrift shop!
If the stories are true about how much this 'non-profit' organization pays its ceo/president, it's no wonder the prices are so high. I quit shopping AND donating stuff there years ago. Salvation Army and Lighthouse get my donated stuff.
Isn't Goodwill only considered a charity shop for the tax exemption? Savers is like that in Australia. There is no regulation on their prices as far as I can tell. I know Salvos (Salvation Army) stores have a policy of charging no more than 1/3 of what item would be new, except if they really are antiques/collectibles which they usually keep separate or sell on their ebay store. People do forget though that the main aim of the chain op shops/thrift/charity stores is to have the profits to fund their charity programs, not necessarily for poor people to be able to afford the items. The smaller charities or community op shops on the other hand can go either way.
The op shop my church runs had to reorganise, which some staff were very upset about, because there were different ideas on what the purpose was. Some of the staff thought of it more as a drop in centre and priced things very low, others had to remind them that they still needed to make enough money to pay for the rent and utilities as well as fund the charity programs. This happened at a time when there was also a safety issue because the shop was very crowded and someone fell and hurt themself. Led to complete reshuffle and were closed for months.
Load More Replies...Goodwill is like every other retail shop now - insanely overinflated pricing.
Goodwill is the worst. The "owner" of Goodwill is a billionaire and pays the employees peanuts. I don't donate there anymore.
The Goodwill Price Is Almost Double Of The Marshall’s It’s Came From
My local Goodwill does that with Lucky Brand t-shirts. They charge like $40 by calling them vintage collectibles, but they're just old, worn out, faded t-shirts.
At the store I work at, I caught one Le Chateau dress priced at $60. It was put into showcase, where the higher end stuff is supposed to go. We had much nicer dresses for way less put on the regular racks. I asked about it. Apparently it looked "vintage". I dunno. I just work there.
Load More Replies...My small town thrift store sells shirts for $0.50 - $5. When I first went to a thrift store in the city and saw prices like these, I was honestly shocked 🥲 I distinctly remember it was some lululemon hoodie for $45.
Yeah, some secondhands do that. Especially these in smaller towns, where's no other secondand stores. No competition, so let's charge ridiculous prices. They're always so surprised when they go out of business.
I hate when I see dollar-store items marked up to $5. Who is on their price-making-decision team?!
The prices in Australia are just as bad. mum and I popped into A Salvo’s recently and it was just absurd. They had secondhand clothes, skirt etc. That were dirty and were very old and you could tell they were well worn and they were $12 plus it’s like really? And they had “formal wear” which is formal dresses/prom dresses, wedding dresses etc and they minimum start at $100. It’s like no. Most of them were stained, none of them were from less than the 90s so yeah that was great. We walked out of there with nothing. They also had computer chairs are all stained starting at $50. Just ridiculous.
Unfortunately, Goodwill is no longer a bargain. Goodwill marks up their things so much that they are unattainable to the very people the store came in business to serve. Savers is a much better store.
Evidently not the same as the UK Savers Health & Beauty, which is not a charity shop but is good value.
Load More Replies...Back in the day, shopping second-hand was mostly for those who couldn't afford pricier clothes or were looking for one-of-a-kind items. Nowadays, thrifting has become a trend. According to a 2025 report by Capital One Shopping Centre, roughly 30% of all apparel bought in the U.S. was second-hand.
The folks who shared the items we see on this list aren't the only ones who noticed that thrifting isn't like it used to be. Experts estimate that the second-hand goods market can be valued at somewhere between $100 and $120 billion worldwide. So, if it's so profitable, why is a single roll of toilet paper over $1 at 'Goodwill'? Or is it so profitable because of the jacked-up prices?
Is This A Joke?
They found it on the ground thought we will try and sell it and stuck a ticket on it
I Thought These Were Free On The USPS Website. This Local Goodwill Is Breaking The Law I Think. Do I Report Them To Their Corporate Or USPS?
USPS will send a postal inspector who likely will have charges filed
I'm amazed, but in a different direction. In the UK we have to buy our postal boxes independently, then take them to the Post Office to pay postage, which is high and becoming stratospheric. But as the Government has sold Royal Mail to a foreign businessman/billionnaire, wdye ?
Same in Oz. Or we can buy expensive Australia Post branded packaging.
Load More Replies...Not all is free. It’s only priority mail boxes that you can get free (which these are, I have a ton) but you then have to pay the priority mail shipping prices
Load More Replies...Free? Really? In Australia we either supply our own packaging or we can buy Australia Post branded packaging in-store but it's expensive.
Yes, those are free in the US. Anything that fits in the box ships for a fixed rate, which you pay when you ship.

Found these "earrings" at the local Savers. Tried to tell a cashier that they weren't earrings and are available like 50pc for $3 she said, "well some kid will probably wear them as earrings because they look like safety pins."
They are... Not traditional ear piercing size.
I'm cringing at the mere idea of trying to put these in any of my piercings.
These are stitch markers for crochet and knitting. They help "mark" the place a new stitch or yarn color starts. There are youtube videos that show these are used.
Load More Replies...I've bought earrings from the thrift many times. Sanitize before use and never had an issue, thank god.
Load More Replies...One of the reasons second-hand items are more expensive nowadays is because of rising demand. People (especially younger ones) are more eco-conscious than ever and choose to shop sustainably. In fact, 67% of American consumers say that sustainability is a priority when shopping.
It's basic economics: when the demand for something increases, retailers tend to up their price—even if they're second-hand goods. What's more, many thrift stores have become aware of the real value of some of their items. That's especially true for consignment stores—second-hand shops where retailers sell items on behalf of their owners.
My Local Thrift Shop Got A New Store Manager
Even if they were pure silver and sold at silver price, that's too much.
New manager evidently doesn’t want to make any money for charity, because they’re pricing items way above reasonable thrift store prices. If it’s actual sterling silver, then take it to an antique dealer or jewelry store and sell it to them, or he’ll, put it on eBay or another auction site as a collectible, keep it in the back and do NOT put it out on the sales floor, sell it and send it to the buyer, then put the money in the deposit for the charity, ffs.
I am, literally, ago at this. Just got buy a nice, new, (cheaper) set at Macy's or whatever!

Thrifting expert and consignment store lover Jessie Frances of Cappuccinos & Consignment notes that some thrift stores began curating their selection in response to this growing demand. They're offering more items that may be of higher quality and made by famous brands.
Many thrift stores would have designer bags, clothes, and accessories put behind glass in the past. But nowadays, there are smaller, more unique thrift stores offering only this kind of second-hand selection.

P.T. Barnum said it best...there's a sucker born every minute! hopefully no one actually bought that
As thrifting has been gaining popularity, more stores are opening and more people are working in the stores themselves, but also at donation centers and even in logistics. Consider how big most thrift stores are and just think about how much they're paying for rent. This, together with wages, utilities, and logistical costs, really adds to the bottom line many thrift stores have to cover.
Dude
I wasn't working there at the time, one of the staff told me of a time some guy wanted to test a microwave by nuking up a small electronic piece. Nearly blew up the microwave. My coworker said the customer didn't speak English well and didn't know what microwaves are for or how they work.
dang, after these other entries, gotta wonder what the price was on it

I know they wash the clothes that are donated so why couldn't they clean this up
No, they don't wash clothes that are donated. No charity store has the capacity to do that amount of laundry. This is why they specify clean when asking for clothing donations.

Platforms like Vinted, ThredUp, Poshmark, and Depop have become serious competitors to giants like the Salvation Army and Goodwill. Aside from the convenience (you can just log in and browse while having lunch or lulling yourself to sleep), many online sellers also offer lower prices, making physical stores less attractive.
At "Value" Village In Canada
That can't be right. People, if you see something priced this outrageously, bring it to the manager's attention. No, you're not being a "Karen". They need to know if their Graders are overpricing stuff, which does happen.

How Did These Make It Out To The Shelf?
Someone may have stolen a pair and put their old shoes on the shelf. This happens so often at the store I work at.
And wear your worst shoes to do it so you’re not leaving behind a pair you want. I’m so innocent / stupid that I once went boot shopping with my dad and got a discount on a pair with an ink stain from an attempted theft. I legitimately asked, “How can you steal a pair of walking boots? They’re too big to fit in your bag.”
Load More Replies...I tried bringing a couch to a thrift store (I called and made sure they had room for it and everything) and they wouldn't take it because it had the tiniest little stain on one of the cushions. But thrift stores will take the c**p on this entire list??? Ok.
It will depend on the store and the managers. I've been in Value Village stores, Salvation Army, Habitat For Humanity, Mission Thrift (completely non-profit) and Goodwill looking for furniture. I've seen appalling to really nice stuff in every store. Just going by how you say the employee had to check if they had room, it's likely they got so much furniture in that isn't selling the managers told them to be super picky for furniture.
Load More Replies...I once ditched a shoe with a detached sole, to show up what lousy quality they were. No, I didn't help myself to another pair.

Oh The Possibilities
I wouldn't be surprised if it was labelled as a craft item. A store near me sells cd/dvd discs that are scratched etc as craft items for 10c for a stack of 10. I have bought them...
There's also a serious downside to thrifting becoming so popular. People are noticing how it's becoming a form of fast fashion in itself. If you're a frequent thrifter, you may have seen items from Shein, Temu, and other fast fashion brands making the rounds at your favorite thrift shop.
According to Fashion Innovation, "The glorification of thrifting as the new and hip sustainable fashion trend encourages shopping addictions and overconsumption, which in turn contribute to similar issues we are trying to combat."

Spiders are going to be around. We see them all the time. But the hole should be flagged to staff so they can put it in recycling.
I Love Reducing Waste, But Not Everything Needs To Be Donated To The Thrift Store. There's No Way Those Markers Aren't Dry, Right?
All of the Goodwill stores in my area are super picky about what they'll accept. No way would they take most of this junk, let alone put it out for sale!
That's OPs take on this, that the markers are dry? Not that this shouldn't be on the shelf in the first place?
Some things need to just be trashed. Speaking as someone who whose mantra is reduce, recuse, recycle.
My So Just Paid $15 For This At A Thrift Store
Years ago, most thrift stores were aimed at low-income individuals and contained affordable second-hand items. That's why the donated goods were usually priced lower—so they could afford them. Toronto Star's reporter May Warren suggests that the middle-class youths and teenagers flocking to thrift shops have changed the way thrift shops operate.

Spotted At An Estate Sale
Not all vinyl is collectable. Mostly it's 60's & 70's Rock, and some blues and jazz and the albums have to be in mint condition with the dust jacket. None in this pile would qualify.
I don't know...Michael Jackson? I mean, I happen to know that young musician, but certainly hardly anyone else does. Wasn't aware he had an album out. Who would buy his stuff?
Ooh, I've got some of these! Maybe I'm a millionaire and I didn't know it?
My dad still hates that he let someone convince him to sell records at a garage sale, not because they were rare, but they were ones he wanted to keep. He was just so annoyed that we had hardly sold anything all day that he agreed to the sale. There were plenty of other records he did want to sell, but the guy didn't want them either lol.
I mean, sure. NOBODY had that Michael Jackson album back when it came out. very rare. you'd struggle to find anyone that had it.
Granted, there were and always will be second-hand and consignment shops dedicated to vintage designer clothes that are pricier. But with how popular thrifting has become, even places like Goodwill and the Salvation Army aren't as cheap as they used to be.
Experts say that the low-quality items also drive up the prices of decent or more luxurious second-hand goods. That was especially evident after the pandemic, when many people did so-called "closet cleanses." Thrift expert Jessie Frances also noticed that when thrift stores opened up again, there were lots of low-quality items in thrift shops.
It Was So Hard To Not Get This Shein Beauty
I know my store won't put out George brand. We don't know why Shien is still allowed. But that's just wrong on so many levels.
their bras are great. I'm an F cup, and a lot of affordable makes don't go beyond a D. E if you're lucky. Asda bras are good quality, very comfortable. have wide enough straps for the cup size, and are a very good price. their leggings are decent too. Asda is a bit out of the way for us, but when we are near one, I very often end up buying bras and bedding.
Load More Replies...I'm not going to comment on the fact that it is Shien, but I will comment on the fact that if you know how to sew, this could easily be patched or sewn up and be worn again. Just because it has a hole in it, doesn't mean it should be unusable.
Most stores wouldn't put it out in this condition though, they would either go into the 'rag' collection (which is a horrible practice because most just get shipped to Africa so it's their problem) or the volunteers will take them home to fix. They still might not sell them if the fix is obvious though.

Thanks Savers
Last time I went to Savers they don't even let you try things on anymore. I get that people make messes of changing rooms, and it's a pain to put the clothes back and stuff I do get that, but I won't buy clothes without trying them on. And they only have a store credit policy so I can't even return them!
They let you try them on, just over your clothes. Some customers bring measuring tapes or wear leggings and tight fitting clothes then try stuff on at the mirrors. Kinda awkward but people are so used to it now no one cares. Some people get real brave, go off in a secluded corner and get down to their skivvies. Lol not really super kosher but staff don't stop anyone. (Just a realization I had just now, I'm a bit disturbed this is becoming a thing in other big box stores. Walmart has also taken away change rooms, making women try on bras in the middle of the store.)

It’s Almost Cheaper To Buy Books New Now
In the UK, most Charity/Thrift Store book cost £1, unless they are a larger book, or a hardback, but even then, they usually only go up to about £3. Most shops also have a BOGOF or three for two, so you, on average, could get like 3 book for less than a fiver.
Unfortunately online influencers started shopping at Goodwill's and they have embraced it by making it unaffordable for the people it was intended for in the first place. And don't get me started on what they do with the "good stuff" that comes through and never even makes it to the sales floor. Or how they're subsidized by the government and then pay the people next to nothing.

Some Absurdly Priced Items I Found Today At A Thrift Store
I wonder if sometimes employees do this because everything has to be out on the floor for a while before they can purchase--put it out with a crazy price, then re-tag it with something reasonable right before they buy it.
That's an interesting thought. In Australia they don't generally have that policy, staff can buy as soon as priced. My brother has got some things like Lego that way that goes really quickly if put on the shelf.

I was in a shop once that was selling bags made out of lots of ring pulls. They’re definitely usable in crafts but for the average person wandering Goodwill it’s just rubbish

Depending on the project your working on, might be worth it. I have a purse made of those.
Some Thrift Stores Scare Me. Obvious Fake For $600
Aahahahaha
Generally the kind of people who buy used underpants want them to come with a picture of the wearer.
Load More Replies...Okay, for the record, thrift stores do not sell underwear that's been used, or possibly been worn. It must be presented as brand new, never been worn, absolutely clean and intact, and have original tags on them. No one who works in production wants to be handling anyone's crusty, used underwear.
Surprise
Are We Thinking Wasps? Bees?
Apropos of nothing, looking at the color of those, it would be fun to make copies of those out of maple sugar and watch reactions as you pop one in your mouth...
Come On These Can Be Easily Recycled
And? They shouldn't be $5. I would spend maybe $2 for those.

Local Goodwill Is Pre-Damaging The Clothes
This particular goodwill has an interesting new idea. They pre-damage the clothing. I was browsing the racks today, and noticed a lot of the clothing had what I thought were initials written on the logo. Then I found some new with tags that had the initials written in it. Then I started to wonder what was going on and asked the cashier. She says its part of an anti-theft policy? They write with marker in the logo to help them reduce theft?
So cool. I would never have thought to write all over the product so I could detour thieves!
Oh, an check out them prices.
The explanation I got was they do this so you can't return them to the original store. LL Bean had (has?) an amazing return policy, so the local Goodwills started doing this to the tags

Goodwill San Jose Ca Selling Trash
Maybe the sales people are prohibited to redeem anything as trash, because getting rid of trash costs them money?
They're supposed to get rid of trash. The amount of stuff that comes in is insane. The one on the right is a reusable Starbucks cup. We have one at home. Idk how much they're worth. My daughter just got it from her grandparents. The sticker says $4.69. Not terribly ridiculous, but I'd say still too much.

Ours has them tagged with those black, thick zip ties. Super stiff. A customer wanting to try walking in shoes could fall and injure themselves. Pisses me off to no end.

Why Would You Pay For These?
You can actually “recharge” them and use them again although it depends on the type used for the success rate, a few minutes in the microwave generally is all that’s needed. A lot of people with 3-D printers use large amounts of desiccant balls to keep their filament (the plastic the 3-D printer uses to print) dry as a lot of of it is hydroscopic and doesn’t print properly when damp. But I suspect most people do what I do with mine which is buy a kilo of it from Amazon and then put it in either small bags or a 3-D printer holder for each reel.

And now you know why I will never donate to Goodwill or Salvation Army. If it is in good condition find a domestic violence shelter to donate things to.
Salvation Army are horrible, they treat the people they are supposed to help like utter trash.

When I was a kid in the 70's we were poor and the charities used to give people items for free (gasp!) as they were a charity and wanted to help people in need. It was truly not for profit.
These pics make the store look fairly well organized, the stores in the area where I used to work were abysmal.
Load More Replies...It's getting worse, nothing is low priced at thrift stores now. I know that at a local Sallie army store the staff take the really good stuff and sell it privately and keep all the profits. They don't even bother to hide it. Another 2nd hand store priced everything like it was brand new and not donated. Some think their shite don't stink and look down on you for entering and being on a budget. My friend worked in one where they would sell broken and stained items and charge a premium for them.
Funny and Absurd? No kidding. BP, have you been hacked? These are ridiculous. Got to be a joke.
