nzambi matee — a nairobi-based 29-year-old entrepreneur and inventor — is the founder of a startup that recycles plastic waste into bricks that are stronger than concrete. called gjenge makers ltd, her company initiated following the development of a prototype machine that turns discarded plastic into paving stones
Imagine driving on the road one night, and seeing glowing roots in air
The ‘Yup That Exists’ project is very popular online. It has branched out to all the major social media channels and dug its roots deep. For instance, on Facebook, it’s amassed a whopping 711.6k followers.
Meanwhile, the ‘Yup That Exists’ project has over 401k followers on Instagram. Whereas on TikTok, it has over 554.8k followers and has collected over 14.8 million likes across all of its videos. Say what you like, but strangeness clearly sells, especially when paired with interesting information. And the entire project has won over the hearts of many an internet user.
Amazing! I love that they thought about how to be inclusive here. What a great project.
However, you describe the things in this list—peculiar, odd, downright bizarre, or even aesthetically challenged—one fact remains: they’re eye-catching. They stand out. They hook you and reel you in because they’re so far away from the norm.
Earlier, Bored Panda spoke about this with Swiss design experts Jonas Nyffenegger and Sébastien Mathys who run the Ugly Design Instagram project. According to them, they have a love for ugliness that keeps growing, meaning the line between ugliness and beauty gets blurred. And that helps content stand out from the crowd.
"It appears more and more of our followers have completely lost their taste. That’s a good thing. It means they’ll have to find it again. It will most likely be forever changed,” they told us.
Jonas and Sébastien explained to Bored Panda that different designs stand out from the crowd on social media. “When seeing an ugly design rather than perfect aesthetics (as defined in the 21st century)—scrollers takes notice,” they said that unpredictability wows viewers.
Some people even take bizarre designs to a whole other level by incorporating them into their homes and gardens. History teacher James Hull and landscape architect Bede Brennan, the founders of another popular Instagram page that celebrates weirdness in gardens, told Bored Panda that just because something has a funny vibe, a weird aesthetic, or is different doesn’t necessarily make it bad.
"We love the way people put themselves out there with their gardens. Gardens are a really personal thing and are always on display out the front of your home. They require huge amounts of effort and upkeep too," they said that even ugliness has artistic and aesthetic merit.
Wait, you can read books in Minecraft? Sorry, I've never played. Mostly Nintendo games and point-and-click adventures on Steam.
"Certainly, there is something about the ugly aesthetic which stands out on Instagram, a garden doesn’t have to be classically beautiful to stand out, make you happy, or be a landmark in the real world either," James and Bede told us that the peculiar really does stand out on people’s social feeds.
how it works: they carefully prune the branches of Kitayama cedar trees, ensuring the remaining shoots grow straight upwards. this results in round and straight timber (taruki) like the trees in the picture. harvesting takes around 20 years and the trees can grow up to 100 shoots at a time. Epic!!!! (duh, reread the title....owe it to the 1 am Bored panda browsing) I used oatmeal boxes.
I hate things like that and I don't even smoke. I fully support smoking bans in public places where your smoke can harm others but what I do with my body is not the business of a nanny state government.
Is this any different from forcing people to wear seatbelts or helmets? It's strictly for their own health, and the risk far outweighs the luxury. Speaking from an American perspective, I think it's prudent to have more "nanny" laws from a nation with universal healthcare; if people's healthcare is being paid by the public taxes, then it's in the public interest to put a stop to needlessly reckless habits that cost them money. To put it bluntly, it actually IS the government's business.
Load More Replies...In the UK, the ban on public smoking (2007) and other interventions have reduced the rate of children taking up smoking by around 40%. It's not something that happens overnight. If smoking in NZ can be reduced to zero within say 50 years, then it will have been worth it. They have to start somewhere. And I speak as someone who smoked most of my adult life, starting at 15.
Load More Replies...Please don't shame the smokers. It's a horrible habit and it's incredibly hard to stop.
That's why I think this law is great. It is not making current smokers have no access to cigarettes, as it is so hard to quit. It is stopping the younger generations from ever starting in the first place (or at least that's the aim).
Load More Replies...New Zealand seems to be taking more and more steps to have power over its citizens' lives. Read up on the country's perspective on Down Syndrome.
As someone who lives in New Zealand, I totally agree. Our government is creating divides between its people in so many different areas of life, and we're gradually losing our control, bit by bit. Sounds a tad dramatic, but its true.
Load More Replies...Why in the world do people in these comments have a problem with the government banning something that literally causes death or other severe health problems?? I don't get it!! How far will you people go for "freedoms"? SMH
Because War on drugs has been proven demaging and ineffective...
Load More Replies...And I presume they will create a team of special police in order to fight against mafias selling cigarettes to underage people !
You can already buy illegal cigarette's in Australia and probably in New Zealand too.
Load More Replies...A ban will solve this problem. That's why marijuana and crack disappeared.
Cigarettes and tobacco are two of the most highly taxed commodities so what is going to be taxed higher in New Zealand now as a result of the government creating a short fall in its own budget? Two other highly taxable commodities are petrol and diesel so again with the push for electric vehicles leading to a drop in tax from fuel, so either something weird is going to happen where tax and money just disappears from the world or we are going to start getting taxed for things like the air we breathe
They also started teaching creationism in school as an alternative to science...
That's so f****d up, I realize that smoking is bad and it shouldn't be done inside, but it should be the person's choice of weather or not they want to smoke
They are not banning smoking. They are only banning the sale of it.
Load More Replies...I hate the idea of the nanny state, but I'm a lifelong smoker and wish government in the UK had implemented this 50 years ago. However what would have replaced the billions of tax revenue from tobacco? Please dont blind me with "savings in the NHS etc, the statistics/maths don't tally. I just think this is a brave and forward thinking plan and if it saves people from a dreadful addiction in the future - brilliant.
These things always remind me of the book The Giver. It’s a short read, I think even suggested to 5th-6th grade. But it has some things to think on, specifically how far should we go to “protect people”?
Hell yeah create a black market for tobacco products good idea 👍
Almost 1 year old law in US state of Oregon.... The measure makes possession of the following a noncriminal violation: Less than 1 gram of heroin. Less than 1 gram, or less than 5 pills, of MDMA. Less than 2 grams of methamphetamine. Less than 40 units of LSD. Less than 12 grams of psilocybin. Less than 40 units of methadone. Less than 40 pills of oxycodone. Less than 2 grams of cocaine.
It's all a slippery slope and when you picture the world without all the "bad" things you only think of what you agree with. I am pro-life but I will always support and vote pro-choice bc I have no right to tell someone else what they can or can not do to their bodies. What if the government said tattoos were banned or piercings? What if it was banning harmful literature? It makes common sense bc Tobacco ruins people but when you give an inch they take a mile. It's a slippery slope.
Yeah, no. It's not the state's job to keep you from any possible harm.
It's a tricky one to debate. People should have the choice, but on the flip side there are literally no upsides to smoking.
Sure there are. It’s calming and relaxing and feels good. I used to smoke and I would still smoke if it wasn’t bad for you.
Load More Replies...It is if the country has free healthcare, and has to pay for the insane amount of lung cancer caused by cigarettes. Cigarettes are really dangerous, other forms of nicotine are so much safer. They aren't saying you can't have nicotine, they're just saying you can't give yourself cancer if they're the ones who have to pay for it
So from now on people who wants to buy smokes will be labled criminals if they were born 2009> I wonder what kind of punishent they would give you! Will it be in the same group as narcotics or is this just a lame attempt to increase crime rate (And of course increase criminals caught) to artificially inflate their statistics?
It's really generous to look and considering such situations of the society cause smoking is just the begining of the problem peer groups things it's cool to smoke then they rob they steal they drugged they get depression and what not great
It's simple ... don't go after the people, go after the manufacturers. Give them two years to wind up their businesses and end licensing for this kind of business. The government won't have 'nanny stated'. People will get time to adjust out of the habit.
For the information of anyone who doesn't know, Jacinda Arden the NZ Prime Minister is as PC lefty as anyone can get!
I live here and was told that all cigarettes will be illegal in 5 years time. SMH
I think some people are confused about this law - it isn't to stop kids from accessing tobacco products. It is sayin anyone who is CURRENTLY younger then 14 can NEVER purchase these products, even when they are of legal age to do so. So when these kids turn 20, 30, 40... they still cannot purchase. Making it illegal for some and legal for those who are already older is what I think the bigger problem is.
Ridiculous. I don't smoke but this is crazy. I nearly want to start!
People pushing highly addictive drugs that kill do need regulating.
One thing I think a lot of people are misinterpreting is that this is mostly about tax dollars. Most people do not think about how much others use of the medical services their tax pays for. When you have a universal healthcare sytem what matters is that you get what you need, not nosing around to check how much others are using. The bottom line is, use of tax dollars are not the main aim of this bill. It is more about public health. They want to make sure there is one less addictive substance out there that can drastically affect the overall health of the nation. It's about stop the citizens from smoking before they even start.
That is so interesting. So no matter how old you are in N Zed, you cannot buy cigarettes if you were born in 2009? I would rather see outdoor smoking banned.
Now this is a brilliant idea. Older people got duped into the habit when they're young. With this, the next generation should never see these things, ever.
Because people need laws to protect them from their own stupidity and there isn't much that is more stupid that spending thousands of dollars a year on an acquired taste that creates a need you never had and damages your health in the process.
Hooray! Let's celebrate the nanny state, dictating to people how to live their lives! Because history has shown that government bureaucrats know how you should live your life better than you do. Next up: The government decides what is the one true religion and requires all people to believe in it.
Kids will easily be able to get them anyway, from older friends or relatives.
New Zealand is always so progressive: creating indigenous parliamentary seats (1857); granting women the vote (1893); advocating an eight-hour working day (1840); state-funded old-age pensions (1898); the world’s most extensive system of pensions and welfare (1938); and its unique no-fault accident compensation scheme (1974).
I'm was a smoker for many years myself and managed to quit, and my best friend is still to this day wanting to quit but struggles so much with it. I can see the purpose with this and i think it is a interesting idea. However! The current smoking rate of New Zealand adults is 13.4 percent in 2019/2020, and 40.2 percent in 2011/12, Statistics from other countries also shows that it is slowly dwindling. I do think better education (let teenagers meet real people in the hospitals and stop showing those shitty anti drug movies from the 80's! ) and harsher prices is a way to go. But not forbidding. Its up to individuals to chose. Where do we draw the next line? limit on takeaway? alcohol? tax fat people more? Parents that share their unhealthy eating habits with their kids?
It's the ban of tabacco step by step. They know that you can't force the already addicted that's why the ban them for people born since 2008. So they get a larger generation if people without that addiction and can ban it completely.
This just means that kids will go to dodgy dudes for tobacco and it will be cheap, nasty stuff mixed with god knows what, I've seen bootleg tobacco and it is even worse. This only makes people go elsewhere, and it's ridiculous.
All of the unsurprisingly authoritarian/borderline communist comments on this aren't a huge surprise to me, given the audience that proliferates here. I would be very interested in hearing what people's thoughts are on the banning of alcohol and the criminalizing of fast food restaurants in general. My point being, this is a dangerously slippery slope, and people make poor health and poor lifestyle decisions on a daily basis. At what point do we draw the line? If someone is frequently promiscuous (I can just feel the "sexually liberated" readers getting uneasy now), and they are at a higher risk for STD's, statistically speaking, should we outlaw sex before marriage? According to this source, smoking and obesity actually cost less in health care dollars than "thin and healthy" people: https://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/05/health/05iht-obese.1.9748884.html I don't expect anything I said here to make sense for the vast majority of you, given that it's common sense. Downvote away!
Are you really that stupid, Missy, or are you just pretending? You know, it *is* possible to disagree with people without calling them Communists (or Fascists). You should try it sometime. And no, much as you deserve it, I won't give you the satisfaction of downvoting you.
Load More Replies...While I support smoking bans, not sure how they will enforce this, unless they ask for a birth certificate when buying smokes.
There are age limits on buying alcohol, and they ask for ID. It's already done for that, so it can be done for tobacco products.
Load More Replies...I'm a smoker, but way over the age of this law affecting me, however - let people do with their bodies as they choose, smoke, don't smoke, have abortions, don't have abortions, cut off your junk, sew junk on...Idc. In the end, if they die, they die. If they're unhappy with sewn-on junk or aborting a baby, that's a cross they have to bear. Make your bed then sleep in it.
Boo Government Over Reach! Dont make more drugs illegal, Make all drugs legal! Make sure they are prodduce ethically, Tax them to help curb over use, (like america has done with cigs) use tax money to help people stop support struggling communities and fund stupid government projects.
It's perfectly appropriate to have a NANNY telling people 14 and under what they can't do!!! Young people are absolutely not able to make a life altering reasoned decisions about whether to become addicted to nicotine or not.
This means they will never be allowed to buy them even when they turn 18, never ever
Load More Replies...Imagine the different responses if yoga was gonna be phased out instead of tobacco. It’s all a matter of perspective. It doesn’t matter if one is healthy and the other deadly. Adult choices with adult consequences. People have been paralyzed doing CrossFit. But smoking does stink, literally.
For everyone saying it's government overreach, just consider. In New Zealand they have universal healthcare. In the US, you get cancer from smoking it's your problem to deal with. It's absolutely YOU dealing with the consequences of YOUR actions. But that's not the case here. When universal healthcare is in place, the government absolutely has a vested interest in your health. They're paying for the upkeep of your body. If you develop cancer or any of the other many possible conditions related to smoking, the government has to pay for it.
You know why this is brilliant? It's the way to put an end to something that should have ended years ago. And it's just going to happen. There will be hemming and hawing and within weeks (maybe months) it'll be over. It could work.
you can't discriminate one group of adult citizens in buying something that is legally being sold in the country... ban cigarettes altogether, I have no problem with that... but this is a terrible idea
"you can't discriminate one group of adult citizens in buying something that is legally being sold in the country" Of course you can. Why not?
Load More Replies...You'd have to deal with a whole load of people who are addicted to cigarettes and suddenly can't get their fix. Imagine how many stressed and angry people you'll have on your hands! Better that people never get addicted in the first place.
Load More Replies...It's the same with the Youth Hostel at the Rocks in Sydney! Not only can you see the historical dig site underneath, but there are glass cases in the common room displaying various artefacts.

This must've taken quite an effort to make, even the details are all there. I love it!

Yeah it was a twitter or fb account or something and programmed to read the comments and tags from other people and learn human behaviour from there - they made the mistake of telling people this mf existed 😂
Awe, the ducks are so intricate, being a huge duck lover, I love this!
No a murmuration is just a cloud of starlings. Any one we see shapes in (like clouds) is just in our brain, they're NOT trying to look like predators.
I've always wondered how they are able to "tell"/validate that this is indeed a new shade of blue. I mean, to the human eye, it must be pretty impossible to tell it apart from other close shades?
How do you clean it? Everything little thing will get caught in all the nooks and crannies.
They should also have added these sea slugs can use photosynthesis.
Please someone tell me that I'm not the only one confused about its practical use
I guess manholes in Romania go to different kinds of places than the ones I have to deal with...
Wait, the f****n Smurfs movie had a whole real town paint their houses blue. For the Smurfs? stepping over the line a bit.
It would be really dumb to do something like that. Plants even needs resting time.
I just visited this site and it is incredible. I've been losing faith in humanity during the pandemic and reading what people are writing in their most vulnerable and open state is so beautiful. It's exactly what I needed today.
Much like the Himalayan Monks that create beautiful works of art to destroy as to never put value on material items.

Apart from the spelling errors and factual liberties, I guess this was fine.
More of these please. I skip most pages these days because they are so negative.
So, once again, Japan proves that even their silliest of ideas are still aweing the rest of the world. Meanwhile, they have a serious population decline and everything there just costs so much money.
