That crunch when backing up a car, or the crash of a bowl slipping off the table, there are certain sounds that just make us inwardly groan. From cleanup to embarrassment or material cost, disasters and accidents are never fun. But once it’s our wallet removed from the equation, we do have an interesting fascination with seeing things break.

The “That Looked Expensive” internet group is dedicated to documenting accidents, fails, and disasters that might make you shudder a little bit. So get comfortable, bless your lucky stars that your stuff isn’t on this list, and upvote your favorite examples.

    EndersGame_Reviewer Report

Just to get the big picture stuff out of the way, the biggest “that looked expansive” man-made disaster in human history was the Chornobyl disaster in 1986. While it can be hard to work out exact figures, as there are a number of disagreements on how to measure externalities and Soviet bookkeeping was often fanciful, some estimates suggest damages around $700 billion

It’s also a disaster of such magnitude that there are consistent, ongoing costs to keeping the damage in check, from maintaining the exclusion zone to maintenance on the protective constructions near the reactor itself. Fortunately, this sort of disaster is unlikely to repeat itself in this day and age.

"February 2023: Kaiser Hospital (California Bay Area) MRI machine was turned on with a metal gurney, patient and nurse in the room. Nurse injured, patient unharmed and gurney totaled. MRI machines use strong magnets and no metal should have been near the machine."

Thank gods it was only an injury. This could have easily been fatal.

Fun fact: MRI machines use super cooled helium to run. When an event like this happens, there is an emergency shut off that dumps the helium outside (quench vent) to stop the machine. It takes $60,000+ worth of helium and a f*#& ton of days to get it back up and running. Not to mention damage to the machine itself. And you know helium is a finite element, so this is not a good situation.

Given that helium is put inside partly balloons, I don't think the amount inside an MRI is going to wreck the environment. The real cost is in liquefying the helium, which is really really difficult. PS. I checked. $60,000+ plus is the correct cost for the amount of liquid helium used by an MRI.

Not a big deal. Kaiser can (and will) just raise their insurance rates and lower the quality of care to handle this cost.

I had an MRI scan a few years ago and asked one of the staff if it really was so powerful, and in answer she clipped a keychain, about a foot long, to her belt and took me into the scanner room. The chain instantly went horizontal and you could feel the magnet pulling against you when trying to pull the keys towards you. Even from ten feet (3m-ish) it was remarkably strong.

Is this the one where the lady had a gun "stashed on her person", had an MRI and the gun ripped itself out of her body and attached itself to the MRI machine? Doesn't anyone get that the "M" in MRI stands for Magnet, a very, very powerful magnet?

The next on the list, dwarfed by a number of earthquakes and hurricanes, is the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. It is still considered to be the largest marine oil spill in the history of the industry, dumping 780,000 cubic meters of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Like most ecological disasters, it can be hard to measure the damage in the short term, but some estimates put it at $60 to $100 billion dollars.

22 July 2023, on I-76 North in Dalton-Whitfield County, Georgia, USA. The $380.000 Lamborghini Aventador was driven by 36 years old Spencer Hyde. While speeding at 160 km/h, he lost control and crashed into the trailer. The car driving erratically had been reported to the Georgia State Patrol who was looking for it, and arrived promptly on the crash site. The driver had light injuries, despite the look the survival cell on the driver side was not deformed, as evident by the door still working properly...

We had a beautiful winding road through the moors back home. Hairpin turns and long sweeping bends. Great driving on summer days at reasonable speeds. Not so good in the damp at the same speed. It got so bad the police used a helicopter to tag speeders and they turned the bikes and cars into little cubes as a deterrence. Stopped the endless deaths and serious injuries.

If it helps, it was fixed and ran in the race with the exploding 250 GTO in a post above.

Most of the vehicles they sent over were mothballed anyways. How do you estimate the price of something made decades ago and unlikely to be used by the US Army ever again?
