We’re all guilty of having done something dumb in the past. Things that sometimes keep us awake at night or make us cringe in the middle of the workday. Remember that idiotic thing that you did way back in middle school that made everyone laugh at you? Yeah, let’s spend the next four hours obsessing over it and imagining how things couldn’t have gone worse and how everyone’s probably still laughing at you. However, getting some perspective can set us free.

That’s where the r/TerminallyStupid subreddit, an online community with just over 121k members, comes in. The group documents the times when “terminally stupid” people were “dumb in a way that threatens their safety or someone else’s.” And the things they post are most likely miles worse than anything we’ve ever done.

We’re featuring some of their best pics, so grab yourself some popcorn and get ready to dive deep into the abyss that’s known as human stupidity. We hear that, much like the universe, it’s thought to be infinite.

We Make Changes That Don't Need To Happen:

y2shaf Report

The subreddit is fairly fresh. r/TerminallyStupid was founded in late February of 2019 and will be celebrating its third birthday in less than two months.

If you’re planning on becoming a member of the community, then you should keep the rules the moderators set out in mind. First things first, the content that you post has to match the spirit and direction of the subreddit itself. “Any post that does not have some terminally stupid person in them will be removed. This does not include posts about the subreddit itself,” the moderators explain that things have to be relevant.

Meanwhile, even though at the core of the subreddit lies the desire to poke fun at people who do really dumb stuff, the moderators still care about those people’s privacy. On that note, all names have to be blurred or scratched out so that they’re not readable. The same thing applies to license plates.

The only exceptions are public figures and famous people who we, obviously, know and can comment on their behavior openly as much as we like. However, this doesn’t mean that the focus should be on politics. “Please, No politics. This subreddit is not going to devolve into a fight between the left and right. Users found to be in violation of this rule will be banned,” r/TerminallyStupid’s mods warn.

Previously, I interviewed Vanessa Bohns, an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior at Cornell University. We spoke about embarrassment, knowledge blind spots, and how we should react when we make big blunders.

"We spend a lot of time and effort presenting an ideal version of ourselves to other people. When something happens that contrasts with the image we’ve been projecting—when we say or do something that shows we actually aren’t as graceful or as smart as we’d like people to believe—we feel embarrassed," Vanessa explained to Bored Panda what happens when our perception of how great we think we are doesn’t match reality.

"Discovering you were wrong about something most everyone else around you has long known to be true is one of those moments. In that moment we learn, 'Wait a minute, maybe I haven’t been presenting the image of being smart or worldly that I thought I was presenting all this time,' which is embarrassing,” the expert said.

It’s not all doom and gloom when it comes to embarrassment. In fact, it can be a very positive force. That is if we react accordingly.

“One thing that’s interesting about embarrassment is that, for as much as we might experience it as painful in the moment, it’s actually very socially adaptive. Being embarrassed signals to other people that you care about what they think. And that actually draws people in to you,” Vanessa said.

“So blushing, burying your head in your hands, laughing, acknowledging how embarrassing something was, are all totally healthy ways to react,” Vanessa said that we shouldn’t feel embarrassed about feeling embarrassed. In fact, trying to hide our embarrassment can actually backfire on us.

“The unhealthy way to react is to pretend you’re not embarrassed, that you didn’t make a mistake, or to get angry. Those things undo the positive effect of embarrassment typically has on other people by conveying insincerity and pushing people away rather than drawing them in,” she said. In short, owning up to having done something downright dumb and incredibly stupid by embracing our embarrassment is the mature, emotionally healthy way to react. Trying to hide the fact that we messed up, however, won’t win us any friends.

I'm a GenXer. We were allowed to play with mercury droplets in science class. Rolled them around in our hands 'til we got bored. We were the same kids that played with discarded plastic dry cleaning bags. And when a truckload of sand was delivered to our home, me and the bro got inside a discarded cardboard box with lots of toys and rolled down the sand pile pretending we were in an earthquake. We got very injured. Then did it again but just with the soft toys. How am I still alive?

I learned this recently and wanted to share it. The reason why hatters used to go mad wasn't that they touched mercury, but because they would heat it and use the steam to give their hats a glossy sheen. Breathing in said steam causes significant neurological decomposition. The more you know.

Back in the day, we were given little bowls of it in chemistry class to examine. I used to touch it with my fingers and play with it and sneak some into my pencil case to take home. We were told not to touch it, but nobody ever said because it was really dangerous. I mean, I still can't believe as a child in single digits, I was exposed to this stuff!

Mercury in it's metallic Form is not THAT dangerous. Playing with it for a few minutes should be OK. Just don't heat it up, since the vapors are another story. Also easily desolvable mercury salts are really dangerous. But metallic mercury does not react that easily.

Omg no. No. No. This has to be staged... Edit: I faintly remembered that some murcury compounds are less dangerous to handle than others, but I couldn't remember the chemical names for "most dangerous" and "least dangerous." I figured if it's a glass tube that often goes inside people's mouths, it probably isn't as toxic as pure murcury. Web search didn't clarify anything but I got this from Wikipedia "As of 2012, many mercury-in-glass thermometers are used in meteorology; however, they are becoming increasingly rare for other uses, as many countries banned them for medical use due to the toxicity of mercury. Some manufacturers use galinstan, a liquid alloy of gallium, indium, and tin, as a replacement for mercury. The typical "fever thermometer" contains between 0.5 and 3 g (0.28 and 1.69 drachms) of elemental mercury. Swallowing this amount of mercury would pose little danger but the inhaling of the vapour could lead to health problems."

Actually not that dangerous. It remains in this form even if ingested and will exit the same way. It is still toxic however. Mercury is ingested every day if one eats swordfish, tuna fish, shark, etc. it accumulates over a lifetime and then causes organ damage. Please corr3ct me if I am wrong, however. This is understandable, if extremely dangerous. Mercury has fascinated humans for thousands of years because it's the only metal that is liquid at room temperature. It was used in medicine as recent as the 1800s. But it's toxic and causes insanity. Be sure to tell kids never to touch it.

a thermometer broke in our Grade 2 class. It was the type with the red liquid with the beads. The teacher and teacher helper went to get something to clean it up before telling us not to play with the beads. Then the teacher's helper saw us playing and shouted at us saying it's mercury and to wash our hands immediately. To this day, I have no idea if we were affected or not. It's not like they called poison control or anything. Not even our parents. Good times.

@ Brain Bennet: On BP you have to clearly mark when you're joking or being sarcastic. A lot of pandas would do each and everything in this topic without a worry in the world.

No death was reported though. Original from 2017 but resurfaced 2020 with death mentioned by online columnist, not news channel. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/south-african-pastor-encouraged-worshippers-to-drink-rat-poison/BQ7V5KE5Y57XGIISLFKDF46BDE/

I'm not convinced this is true. There has been an urban legend around since the '90s about a cleaner at a hospital unplugging the life support to plug in the floor polisher. The story supposedly took place at a hospital in South Africa, but follow-ups showed it never happened. Then a few years later I saw the same story on the news (here in South Africa) about it happening it Zimbabwe. It never happened!

I don't think this should be here... Lighthearted stupidity is one thing, some of these entries are a little morbid, but this is disgusting and rather disturbing to read. It's not stupidity, it's a deliberate denial of reality with fake statistics for the purposes of making women seem inferior and giving 'reasons' to hate them (and possibly to ignore any r*pe accusations because 'its just made up, you can't trust them.) A completely different kind of horror that the other posts
