School lunch is an important part of the students’ day. It provides a much-needed break from the classroom and an opportunity to refuel. However, the quality and variety of the menu can vary greatly depending on which part of the globe we look at.
Some schools, for example, have been trying to improve the nutritional value of their lunches by adding more fruits and veggies, reducing the amount of processed foods, and offering options for eaters with dietary restrictions. These efforts can help ensure students get what they need to stay active and focused. On the other hand, some schools still serve meals that are high in fat, sugar, and sodium, which can contribute to obesity and other health problems.
Which Countries Have The Best School Lunches In The World
To see who is on the right track and who is lagging, we at Bored Panda decided to expand on our previous publication on school lunches from around the world and put together a new collection of pictures that vividly illustrate the situation, courtesy of the subreddit r/pics. Enjoy photos of real school lunches around the world, and share a photo of a typical school lunch in your country in the comments below!

Free School Lunch In Stockholm, Sweden
Are those actual plates? In the US, we are a few years away from them just serving the food on the table directly
Yes, all Swedish schools serve on real plates with real cutlery and glasses.
Load More Replies...so apparently there are like 5 countries i need to move to just for the schoool lunch
Yet another thing to add to my list of reasons to move to Sweden
You’re very welcome when you come.
Load More Replies...As a Dutchie I am shocked to see these “lunches”. This is dinner served at noon… wtf? In Holland we eat bread smeared with peanut butter, chocolate sprinkles or cheese. And a piece of fruit if you are feeling fancy. Ffs smh
That used to be the standard in Australia (though brought from home, not free) but now you can't have peanut butter and there is so much multiculturism you see anything from sushi to pasta (many kids bring food in a thermos).
Load More Replies...For clarification, is this how the food is plated in schools? Kids get porcelain plates and food all in one, no dividers or anything? Even when I was in kindergarten in the south at the tail end of actual lunch lady making food from scratch, we had divided trays.
It's served like a buffet, you grab a plate and serve yourself (and yes it's always regular plates/glasses/cutlery)

Damn that a lot compared the last few I've seen. Why can't American treat kids better it such b******t
Simple answer? We'd b***h about the cost. It's shocking how few people would be willing to pay to make food like that available.

Upvoting because I was thinking the same thing.
Load More Replies...Question: is this consistent in Swedish public schools? French school lunches range from decent to the wtf were they thinking? Especially when the French try to do foreign meals, like the recent German lunch of choucroute garni (French) with flammkuche (more Belgic than German). American day food was, as my child explained "sh*t I threw away". My kid tells me the best thing about French lunches (never free, and you can't byo) is that if everything in the menu is awful, you can get a bit of bread and water.
Pretty consistent, it seems, at least according to my friends who all have kids and live all over the country. But it could depend on school, too, since it can differ region to region with things like that sometimes.
Load More Replies...Yeah. As a rule, we avoid lunch at IKEA whenever possible. We even avoid IKEA altogether, truth be told, we only go to the Maze Of Affordable Furniture when we have to and most tired Swedes turn into the prince of darkness even before they step out of their cars in the parking lot. IKEA isn’t something to have lunch in, it’s a cursed place of family fights and something to put off for as long as possible, then carefully prepare for when it can’t be put off any longer. That’s the Swedish standpoint, anyway.

In America, we insist women give birth without prenatal care, then refuse to feed the babies they 'saved'.
I would love to know what each of the foods are on the photos of this post
Looks like a fish cake bokkum, kimchi, cucumber kimchi, curry rice, and soup made from dried fish. No idea what the pizza looking thing is, all the school lunch pizzas I've seen never look like that. I've also never seen pizza as a random side dish for a school lunch here

Pics From Some Schools In Korea Known For Having Best School Lunches
American food looks like it's from that OTHER Korea 🤣
Load More Replies...I'm willing to bet these are private schools, if they have the best in the whole country
Its nice that they get fulfilling meals! Here in the US, some children get very little when it comes to school lunches. Its real sad because some children rely on those little lunches cause they aren't able to afford to eat 😢
Sweden
One of the hottest pictures on this list comes from Stockholm, Sweden. Its author, Redditor Cool_Kalkon, told Bored Panda that their school usually serves different types of stews, complementing it with chicken or beef, but there are vegetarian options, too.
“The quality [of our lunch] is really good considering the budget they have,” Cool_Kalkon explained to us. “The food is always healthy and mostly cooked from raw ingredients in school. They even got a vegetarian alternative every day and a salad bar.”
Cool_Kalkon said they don't know how the lunches could be improved because they’re satisfied with the food. But if they were to come up with something, they would probably “cut down on the number of stews and have a bit more variety in the menu.”
However, the Redditor pointed out that their picture doesn't represent the whole country of Sweden. “There are schools with much worse food and also schools with much better,” they said. “But, all in all, I think it’s fantastic that we are able to get a healthy meal on our plate every day without having to pay.”

I like how they make Georgia look like we have nice school lunches for our children they really don't. Just this year they couldn't even feed the kids because quote on quote the shipment of food got lost at sea 😕 they gave the kids some yogurt and gronola for lunch because that's all the could give them
Ok, I retract my earlier comment about all US school lunches. This looks delicious!

School Lunch In California (Free)
I like how NYC and California have very different takes on children nutrition
I work at a school in California I call B.S on this lunch only thing our kids get from this are the weird tasting apple slices.
I live in california, and my lunch does not look like this. It is free, and include a fruit you must take, milk (Often Expired) and some kind of prepackaged, sandwich, quesidilla or rice. Pizza if we are lucky
Hmm.. I'm a ' school cook' in California and this is not what we serve. In our dreams . Where is this photo from? We have styrofoam trays single use plastic forks and would never be able to afford the veg on that plate,!!
Where? Definitely NOT the Bay Area - Silicon Valley - one of the richest areas of the US - and they give the kids here frozen peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, an apple and a carton of milk
This is completely BS! I have lived in California my whole life and my children have NEVER RECEIVED SUCH A BEAUTIFUL HEALTHY LUNCH! They eat c**p!
Of course they’ve got f*****g sliced avocado and grapefruit
I live in California and this is NOTHING like what we get. There's mac 'n' gloop, "chicken" with "pesto", and a couple of other awful options. We're required to take an underripe fruit and they only offer milk, so lactose-intolerant people just can't drink anything.
Nahhh we don’t even have trays and it’s just 4 nuggets and a milk and banana

School Lunch Oregon ~free
I live here and the meat is usually soggy or rubbery.
Load More Replies...I lived in Oregon most of my life and I never got food anywhere close to as good as this. Maybe it depends on district?
Yeah, I went to high school in Oregon and never got anything like that. We had a choice of pizza, hamburger, or cheeseburger, each with fries, or salad bar, usually dried out after having been set up right after breakfast. Drink was regular or chocolate milk. Most of us went to the Wendy's drive thru instead. I was glad my senior year was only 1/2 days so I could eat at home.
Load More Replies...Best lunch u ever had was in a small high school that had to make much of their meals from scratch. My favorite meal was their chili which also came with a handmade cinnamon roll and a large wedge of cheese. I also believe they invented the walking taco as that was a common menu item and this was back in 2005
Japan
On the other side of the globe, we have another Redditor, Sjbfujcfjm, representing the city of Takatsuki in Osaka Prefecture, Japan.
Their picture reveals what the country’s younger kids (2-6 years old) are having. A staff member at White Rose Kindergarten, Sjbfujcfjm told Bored Panda that “Daily lunches usually consist of a portion of meat (fish being a popular option), a vegetable, rice, soup and something sweet like an apple or orange slice or fruit jelly.”
“The quality is quite good,” the Redditor added. “All of the teachers have the option to eat the school lunch, and we do each day. We have a chef and his crew of 4-5 come in daily to prepare the meals. A few times a month, they prepare a special lunch featuring foods from a specific region of Japan.”
However, they would like to see more meals featuring food from other countries. “We sometimes have dishes or sides from China or Korea. But I’d like to see a wider variety,” Sjbfujcfjm said.
Looks Like School Lunches Are Making The Rounds Here Again: United States, Public Middle School
Fellow Marylander! You're right, at my high school, lunch is a bag of chicken nuggets with a stale bun, frozen fruit cups, and a carton of milk.

Load More Replies...Very nutritious.. it's PBand J and milk or a cheese sandwich and milk here. And it is the only meal some of our little people get in a day.
It's mental my older kids often missed lunch as the line was so long that the lunch break would be over before several of the kids had eaten. They have almost 800 kids and get an hour lunch break, and some kids get held back for detention before they can go to line up. It's infuriating

New York City School Lunch

Yes. This is the first one that seems to have the correct balance of fresh foods and no mystery reformed extruded ultra-processed sodium bomb coated "meat" product.
Load More Replies...Title should read "New York City PRIVATE School Lunch". Public schools serve food that even prisons won't.
I noticed they don't have Florida... Oh wait, the food is neither free nor appetizing... My kids are vegetarian and if I didn't pack their lunch they would pay a lot for the one option daily that isn't near. Sometimes that's a$3 salad that I could eat 100 of without filling up. It's literally a side for meat eaters and they get away with calling it a vegetarian main course. But if you criticize the government in Florida, the governor hunts you down, so pretend I didn't say that.
Can confirm, I live there. Currently going to school there and ate school lunch for most of my elementary school years. Tastes horrid tho.
School Lunch From My Country. Where Am I? What Do Kids Eat Where You Are?
Are you totally, absolutely, completely sure this is school and no a restaurant-
This is France. The "cordon bleu" ( breaded chicken or turkey cutlet stuffed with "ham" and cheese ) is either liked or loathed. In the worst case, the broccoli is overcooked, the pear is rock hard, and the cheese is chalky.
I can feel the taste/texture right now... So accurate !
Load More Replies...At my school, we got stale pizza/garlic bread with plasticky cheese or burgers with meat that was somehow burnt and raw at the same time. Sometimes we would get "Indian food" that, as an Indian, was nothing like the real thing, or overly salted soup. This is a California school. I'm Jealous.
In the Netherlands, there are no school lunches provided in about 99% of the schools. However there are cafeterias at the highschools where you can buy ridiculously high priced items. Kids have to bring their own lunch if they can't afford it don't want to spend about $ 5 reach day and some just don't eat at all because their parents can't afford to feed them due to the high prices.
This is so sad! :( I can't imagine a child sitting hungry while others eat. I'm a teacher and would end up using my wages to feed them. I always thought Netherlands was very forward thinking/socialistic like Finland, Sweden, etc.

My Korean School Lunch (That Students Get For Free)! Beef Noodle Soup And Various Banchan!
Banchan or bansang are small side dishes served along with cooked rice in Korean cuisine. As the Korean language does not distinguish between singular and plural grammatically, the word is used for both one such dish or all of them combined. Wikipedia NOW I KNOW 😋
Where is the beef noodle soup that's supposed to be in this lunch?
School Lunch In Japan. The Christmas Edition
International school food puts US food to shame by such a large amount its not even funny
The U.S. is not so homogenized. The quality of the lunch is contingent so many factors, such as location, population and funding. Even saying which state said lunch is from is not an accurate representation. Surely it's the same for these other countries? Is there not a difference in funding between, say, rural and urban schools?
Load More Replies...It's not that big. Bread (pan) is popular at lunch in Japan. They often fill it like a pastry or as a sandwich or eat it as is. That's probably milk bread, it's very fluffy.
Load More Replies...Are they supposed to eat that entire thing on bread in one lunch period
Whoever cooked the chicken has perfected the art of making it look like KFC, wonder if it tastes like it too. Or if they ordered KFC chicken for the school for Christmas since it's such a huge ritual there.
I See Your School Lunch And I Raise You A Dinner On A Us Navy Ship
This one looks pitiful! Especially since it's being served to adults who are serving our country!
Now we know why some restaurants give military discounts. To make up for this.
I call Bravo Sierra (bullshït) on this. You stand in line with your tray and select what you want put on it. Some ships might not have a great selection, but there is always a protein, starch, and vegetables, and usually a salad bar, plus dessert. I was on a carrier and our aft galley had the healthier options, salad bar, taco bar, and sandwich bar. Our forward galley had more of the junk food, burgers, hot dogs, pizza. Also had a salad bar and a pasta bar. Both had bread, peanut butter and jelly, and dessert. I too could have this put on my tray, take a pic, and say we weren't getting fed.
Lol that's what I was thinking. Then again, maybe they p*ssed someone off? I'm siding with you though. Where are the veggies? They don't just toss you a bit of Salisbury steak and call it a day.
Load More Replies...Working at a military base, this is accurate. The military will cheap out one some of the more expensive food items
Billions of dollars for advanced weaponry but not enough for decent food 🙄
Load More Replies...I ate extremely well on my ship. It had huge buffets and lines where you could pick what you want. Also had Starbucks.
The best meal I had while in the US Navy was at a US marine galley on Marine hill in Guantanamo Bay.
Load More Replies...Throw on some fries or wallpaper paste instant mashed potatoes and a tiny, expired carton of milk that sticky from spills during shipping and that's pretty much what my school lunches looked like right down to the jailhouse food tray.
I see that the navy has included the plastic compartmented trays as well
We had those same trays where I went to school, only in pastel colors.
Load More Replies...This is not the norm. Rationing or just chose not to get what else was avail.
This is a blatantly false representation of the daily meals privided to all members serving on US Navy Ships.
Agreed. That’s more typical of midrats, which can be pretty sub-par because the navy rotates a few cooks to serve the overnight watch but they still have to work the rest of the meal schedules too.
Load More Replies...What Food Should Best School Lunches Include?
To contextualize these pictures, we can take a look at the 2021 study by the Global Child Nutrition Foundation that looked into the “food basket” — a fundamental element of any school meal program — of 139 countries.
Grains/cereals were the most common food category (served in 87% of programs), followed by oil (78%) and legumes (75%). Fruits and vegetables (63-65%) were less common, and animal-source foods were served least often—though there was a high degree of variation across income groups. Poultry, for example, was served in 69% of programs in high-income settings but just 5% of programs in low-income settings.
The gap was even larger for fruits, which were served in 97% and 22.5% of programs in high and low-income settings, respectively—a difference of 74.5 percentage points.
In high-income settings, children received an average of 8.3 different food categories, while this value dropped to 7.1, 6.5, and 5.2 in upper middle-income, lower middle-income, and low-income settings, respectively. Across regions, this value was the greatest in South Asia/East Asia/Pacific and the lowest in Sub-Saharan Africa.
School Lunch In Denmark
I can't believe all these places have plates! I've been to all kinds of schools in the us- public, private, charter, magnet, therapeutic, weekly homeschool support- and we always had disposable or plastic trays.
I live in Denmark and it's way more common to bring your own packed lunch. As far as I know there are only cafeterias in high schools and colleges, and it's usually a buffet where you pay per weight. It's kinda pricey when you're a student, so I only bought cafeteria food on rare occasions. The selection is good though, at my college there were always vegetarian and gluten free alternatives as well as a salad bar.
O_O If reincarnation happens to me I want to be a kid who teleports around to try every countries skool lunches.
Free School Lunch UK
It's been 40 yrs since I had a school lunch but I'm tickled to see the sponge cake and custard hasn't changed 😀
Do you remember the pink custard? I loved the pink.
Load More Replies...School meals in the UK are only free for those whose parents are on benefits and even then, there's a tiny income threshold (I think 7.4k) that they have to be under. In other words, there are parents that are struggling to feed themselves and their kids who aren't eligible. Calling them free is a bit disingenuous.
Actually, school meals are (or soon will be) free for all primary school kids in Wales. They have started with Foundation Stage (Reception - Y2) this year and will expand to all primary school kids in the next year or so. I know Scotland have already done this with all their primary school kids. Thank f++k for devolution!

Gordon moved because he didn't have a problem with selling out and UK food is 'tasteless' because not everything has added sugar or corn syrup. In case it wasn't obvious, I'm from the UK and he was from the US. This meal shown here isn't a particularly good representation of our finest cuisine obvs but honestly that guy is deluded.
I remember a Russian immigrant on tv who said everything in the US tastes like it has sugar in it.
Load More Replies...Ummm this is not standard ‘free’ school lunch in the uk. Not least because very few children are actually eligible for free meals. My daughters school doesn’t have a kitchen instead they rent space in the canteen for local restaurants/fast food vendors to set up pop ups, pizza, Asian street food, baguettes etc etc my daughter spends at least 8.50 a day for her lunch
I dont know if this is just my school but most students are eligible for the free school meals and even if you arent (like me) it’s £2.30 for a main course, desert and juice. Pay extra for anything else
Load More Replies...I was a teacher until a few years ago in secondary schools and when I started in 2008 meals were pretty c**p, when I retired in 2018 they were like this- nutritious, filling, tasty and free for students whose family were on a low income (all 4-7 year olds get a free school lunch regardless of income too). Options included, veggie or meat curry, various pasta dishes, fish and potatoes, fajitas etc every Friday would be the only day chips were served (oven cooked not fried) with something like a burger, fish cake, nuggets etc but Monday - Thursday were healthy. Everyday there is at least 1 hot veggie option and always the option of jacket potatoes and either beans or chilli etc and also paninis or sandwiches. Dessert would be either a hot puddling like in this photo or a cookie but fresh fruit was always available too. Many schools now also run free breakfast clubs, I set one up in my school before I had to retire and it was funded by a cereal company.

Load More Replies...I am Australian too and school lunches are non-existent. You must bring your own lunch from home. Some schools have canteen (shop) on-premises where kids can purchase snacks or lunch (not very healthy) or schools employed 3rd party companies to deliver lunches. Again, this option is available to parents and it's paid. Not cheap and the options are not great. Think 2 Tuna and Cucumber rolls for lunch and cut-up apples with hummus for a snack.

Many schools in Germany don't offer school lunch at all and you can't even buy snacks or have a snack machine. Most people I know bring bread to school and eat that and the families eat together in the evening. I have several acquaintances around here who have kids and I'm an aunt. All of those kids take their own lunches to school. There are schools that do offer lunch, but it's not common
I agree with Nitka Tsar, this has changed quite a bit, with school days being longer for the students. Almost every school now has a cafeteria where the children can buy lunch. It is not free, though, and quite expensive where I'm from (compared to the prices that I see in this thread).

What Affects School Lunches Around the World?
Across all regions and income groups, market purchases were the most common method through which school meal programs procured food.
These purchases primarily occurred in domestic markets, though 38% of programs purchased at least some food from foreign countries. In-kind contributions from foreign and domestic settings were much less common at 23% and 21%, respectively, and were primarily reported by programs operating in low-income and lower-middle-income countries.
Because of this, after inflation popped in 2022 to a level unseen in decades, many schools are now forced to spend way more to feed their students. In the US, for example, the price of a meal at elementary and secondary schools spiked by a whopping 305%.

There was a rumor going around that our cheese was actually slime and there was no protein. My school in Colorado had nachos pretty similar to this and they're actually pretty good. It may be an unpopular opinion, but it's a hill I'm willing to die on.
My son's grade school in southern Vermont used a lot of local food as well as growing some. The worst part of their lunch is the government/ state supplied food, because they are a public school. They always had a salad bar with fresh fruit included. I was pretty impressed. His high school has amazing lunches, mostly because they have a stupid amount of money as a semi private school.
This is not what Vermont school lunches look like at all. They feed our kids slop here no matter what school you go to. That’s why I packed my kids lunch. I’ve lived in Vermont my whole life (30 years) and have never been served a school lunch that looks like this in any school around this state. They’re quite pitiful and flavorless. This is definitely not accurate.
Sorry Vermont, but mystery cheese and orange cauliflower isn't scoring any points with me!
And Vermont is a cheese-making state, too. How the mighty have fallen.

Wonder if it's lactose free or if some regions experience intolerance more than others. Or if it's a bunk stereotype.

Oh this looks like the “Mexican pizza” we had on elementary school, with a side of like three baby carrots, and a cookie, with milk. 🤮 American schools suck. Everything tastes and feels like packing peanuts and rubber
My school had these too, no sides though. In the late 2000,s high schools in my area were only required to offer one entree, a carton of chocolate or 2% milk, and a fruit of some sort. The fruit was always jello that was made in large batches on Monday and served through the week. "Mexican pizza" was the best food we got and it was only once a month.

We really have the best lunch-lady I've ever come across.
Thank you for providing some much-needed context; otherwise, I was ready to call “b******t.” I can’t imagine any developed countries not having very strict regulations against serving public school lunches buffet- or family-style. Even older kids can’t be trusted to handle community food in such a way that it doesn’t get contaminated. Using fingers, licking a serving spoon, coughing or sneezing onto a platter. Jeez, I’m getting queasy just thinking about it…

Load More Replies...Russia’s invasion of Ukraine created an energy supply shock, contributing to higher transport costs to deliver food from farm to table. That, combined with other factors such as higher labor costs, underpin fast-rising prices throughout the food complex.
The industry is really interdependent, too. For instance, global shocks in major markets for vegetable oil — a key ingredient in margarine — drove margarine prices up by 43.8% in 2022. Prices for commodities such as soybean, palm, sunflower, and rapeseed (also known as canola) oil tend to move together, meaning a supply disruption for one tends to affect the whole group.
Hopefully, everything will get better in the near future, and school lunches around the world will rise to a new standard!

Chicken, bacon, and cheese on a baguette sounds pretty good, right? Warm OR cold! School Lunch Romania
I feel this needs context. Many schools in Romania don't serve lunch other than maybe something like this. Kids may have pack lunches. Plus in Romania, school is often done in "shifts" so some years will be in school from around 8am to 12:30pm, then the next group of years is in from maybe 1:30pm to something like 5:30pm or maybe a little later. So they get their lunch before/after school, this is more of a snack during school time.
A quick bread and 125 ml of milk every day, for 20 years. And even this was short of a revolution, since romania never assured meals for its people; no school canteens, no factory canteens. The only ones that were provided were those residing on place (like the foster cares) and the privileged ones (like the administration, military or militarized factories). For a while, in the middle 2000s, they gave meal tickets for everybody, but since then even this became a perk for the already well paid ones. what, you thought "good old traditional values" and "the true pushers of the common values" it's all about gardening lots and christmas carols? no, it's the new dictatorship taking its toll from those who escaped the old one.

the pizza is definitely not from her - she pushed for vegetables and fruits, and it was a good idea - cheaper, stimulating the local industries and healthier. unfortunately everyone else opposed it - schools, corporations that sold pre-packaged foods made from scraps, republicans, even children themselves. and the most concerning is the opposition of the schools, that considered a too large sacrifice to spend few hours cooking. if the political debates will ever stop, you will be shocked to see how huge the social issues are, from attitude problems to efficiency and good faith.
I think OP meant the fact that Michelle Obama tried to push for healthier lunches, but this happened anyway.
