People have so many reasons to love their homeland, from friends and family living there, to nature, language, food, and so much more. But many would agree that even the most amazing of countries unfortunately have a darker side, too, which can be quite scary.

Members of the ‘Ask Reddit’ community recently got painfully honest about what scares them about the country they’re from. They opened up after netizen ‘u/Efficient-Formal-195’ started a thread about it, and covered all sorts of scenarios, including violence, social issues, and other concerns. If you’re wondering what problems they face in specific countries, scroll down to find their answers on the list below, and feel free to share what troubles you about your homeland in the comments.

30 People Get Raw And Honest About The Scariest Things About Their Countries USA - I freak out at the thought that a young woman who was sexually assaulted must then (if impregnated) give birth to the child she never wanted because some bastards and their poisoned offspring are “pro-life”.

Ohio citizen here. Yes, where the 10 year old that was raped had to go to Indiana for an abortion. And now they’re trying to prosecute the doctor. I am over 50 (Bernie Moreno) but still vote for girls and young women as does my husband. I don’t where everyone else is.

They are not "pro-life", it is just that they cannot stand the thought of women making decisions. There are studies that claim Roe vs. Wade did more to tackle the issue of crime and violence than any police or "law & order" measures ever could - just by preventing potential criminals from being born into problematic circumstances, saving lots of pregnant teens from social decline in the process.

@The Scout: quite right. Why does anyone accept their dishonest propaganda term "pro-life"? They're anti-abortion misogynists. They don't care about living breathing babies once born, or their mothers. There needs to be some snappy phrase to describe the sort of people who oppose support for mothers and newborn babies whilst also falsely claiming to provide such support, which is what the US anti-abortion lobby does.

Or not only is she forced to carry the fetus but if there is medical issues she will not get the appropriate care and die. Meanwhile the rapist gets a smack on the wrist and told to not be a naughty boy.

Prepare for the system to be overwhelmed pretty soon with r**e babies that are unwanted by bio moms/victims. Better reopen those orphanages. I know plenty of women who couldn't imagine raising them because they see the result of their being attacked every day if forced to do so. Before anyone says " but a baby is innocent ", what is that child the result of? Also they don't think about the bio mom and how the child is going to be paid for. Now if the state has to pay for them, or the child or mom isn't healthy, then what. These people are only Pro Birth. Once they force people to have a kid they walk away and don't see what kind of life it's going to have.

In Australia we had a referendum last year about whether to recognise Aboriginals in the constitution and create a national treaty. Leading up, I was pretty confident that it would pass. Then about 4 weeks before we stated getting more ads from the opposition whose big pull was that if you don't understand the proposal then you should vote no, and the government didn't really address this. They should have been out educating people, especially in regional areas where there was lots of misunderstanding or at least putting out more ads explaining what it meant, but they didn't. So of course the referendum came back as a majority no vote. I was, and still am, so disappointed, in both the general population who voted no, and the government who didn't address misinformation. Lack of education and propaganda that gives misinformation are so dangerous!

A friend of my sister's has had this twice in her life. She was born in India, but her family moved to the US when she was young. Then when she was a teenager her dad was able to get custody and move her to Australia. She has been very vocal about the reasons she is glad she no longer lives in either country and will never return. It's such a shame that the countries that could be better for a lot of people are so hard to migrate to.

not to mention how everything is spiked with sugar and fats, because people naturally craves high calorie content. When things like simple toast is loaded with so much sugar that it should be classified as cake, it makes it very difficult to keep a healthy weight, if you don't have the time to cook everything from the ground up.

The sheer amount of mentally ill people wandering the halls of Congress

This is bc the US grossly misunderstands anosognosia. They genuinely think these people should be "free" to make "choices." Once you're severely mentally ill, that part of your brain that is responsible for insight, I.e. knowing you are mentally ill, no longer works. These people aren't rationally weighing risks and benefits, and then "choosing" to eat out of trash cans and live in a tent. They are insane. And making insane unhealthy choices. We need to protect them from themselves. It's started to turn around. But I literally had a woman in my ER once who was talking to people that didn't exist, shoving pieces of trash up her arm pits over and over, and growling at us. And I was told I had to let her go bc she had "food" (trash), clothing- stained, smelly, and worn but warm enough for the weather, and "housing" (Her cardboard box on the street). I let her go. But never again. I will not give in to pressure like that again. That woman needed help. So frustrating.

I think the spirit of OP is the extremely mentally ill, not just ones with mood or personality disorders. Its the same in Canada. People have the freedom to be free, and as another commenter wrote often people in psychosis do not think they are. And therefore don't want treatment. And in Canada we talk about a lack of funding but often its a lack of clout. Once someones is no longer an IMMEDIATE risk to themselves or others they can decline treatment.

The escalating violence. We have deadly assaults, bombs and assassinations in broad daylight on a monthly basis. Kid soldiers carry out murder and they are like 12 (!).

Ultimately I blame a catastrophic immigration policy over a 10-20 years period. There has never been a real plan on how to assimilate foreigners into society, which has lead to greater dived between ethnicity and cultures. That has paved the way for a new generation of kids with no prospects because they receive no support or encouragement at home, because their parents have never been part of the society. This has grown exponentially over the years but no one (or at least far from the majority) has dared to address the problem given the cultural and racial connections.

A few years ago something happened. The violence became much more cynical and ruthless. Only when the violence hit middle/upper class neighborhoods, things started to happen politically. In desperation, politicians are now enforcing stricter laws to strike down on criminality, some of which are either totally ineffective or morally questionable, and I feel this will only widen the divide and prolong the problem. You’re not really fixing the real issue, only putting band aid on it. Sad part is, and this goes for all democracies, the ruling politicians are swapped out every 4/8 year, which makes it difficult to work long term.

4/8 year term is not a problem. Many things have been achieved in the past in these terms. The problem is there is no will to actually solve problems, anymore. If there were "states" would carry out long term projects even as "governments" changed.

Banning guns won't have an immediate effect but will in the long run. It a proven fact. As the supply of guns dries up and it gets harder to buy or sell they will be less guns on the street..in most civilised countries we can't carry short arms. If I'm a hunter my guns must me locked in a safe. The police come and check.

A lot of people in Mexico are not experiencing DIRECT violence of Cartels. But the violence they impose is wholly downplayed by our government (they're complicit with them, obviously) and it still scares me so much, even though I love my country. I really hate that Mexico = absolute brutality of Cartels, while they're being almost glamorized in pop culture. I hate that someones mentions Mexico here in Reddit and you have to read morbid jokes about Cartels and d***s - I mean, I know it's unavoidable, but it stings when it's so close to you.

32 more countries, yes - but for all that their armed forces are ready, willing, and able, Belgium and the Netherlands for example don't really show up on the graph against Russia... Then again, NATO now has Finland and Sweden in the alliance and that definitely bothers Putin. Despite their small populations, both of them have long been equipped to give their Eastern neighbour serious trouble if need be. Modern or not, Finland and Sweden have troops and equipment which very definitely work properly in their climate.

I live in a very touristy region. Locals have difficulties with finding affordable housing, because it is difficult to find space to build houses for permanent residency. But building a new holiday park with 300 to 400 real houses (two levels, big living room, big kitchen, several bathrooms and 3+ bedrooms on 120m2 plus big garden) is absolutely no problem. We have more than 20 of them along the coast, plus existing villages turned into resorts.

Yeah, our kid has a chronic health condition requiring hospital appointments every 2-3 months, if we moved to a regional area we would save money on rent, but would not earn as much money doing what we do, plus we would need to buy and run a car plus have to travel to the city every 8-12 weeks. Any money we saved on rent would be gone, plus a good bit extra, very quickly.

    > What's something in your country that genuinely scares you?

I live in the US and this last election cycle genuinely scares me.

It's not specifically that Donald Trump won... But more the apparent apathy from a substantial chunk of the country.

Something like 40% of the electorate just didn't bother to vote.

And now, after the election, we're seeing stories about folks discovering what tariffs are.

And I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around that level of apathy. I mean - I'm a nonbinary queer weirdo so I've clearly got issues with the Republican platform - but that's not even what I'm talking about. Trump is proposing policies that would have a substantial financial impact on most folks in the US... And apparently something like half the population just doesn't care enough to vote?

I don't like dealing with politics. I don't find this stuff fun or interesting. I've got tons of things I'd rather be doing with my time. But I'm not rich-enough to just throw my money away, so I'm going to take a couple hours to figure out which candidate is actually going to be the best for my finances.

And, apparently, something like half this country just doesn't care.

There's so many big f*****g problems in the world... And this last election cycle is going to be felt around the world for years to come... And folks just don't care?

How do you possibly fix anything if people can't be bothered to even show up to vote? If they can't spend an hour or two looking at actual policies and positions? If the best we can possibly hope for is that maybe folks will just vote for their team? If even something as real and immediate as your own pocketbook isn't enough to motivate people?

Surely some of those who did not vote will have looked carefully at both sides and come to the inevitable conclusion that there is very little to choose between them in the long run. Of course they have different ideas etc. but the end result is the same. Disappointment and ultimately, no control personally over the outcome during the period in office. I speak from experience, I'm in UK.

I hear you, but the skewed, screwed, two-party system and the electoral colleges mean that for many people their vote, literally, will not count, so why bother turning up? Yes, it sucks, but it's not simply the fault of those individuals who didn't vote. You need to look elsewhere for the real problem.

No, it's not that they *don't care*, because they *do* care! A lot! About are the lies and deliberate misleading rubbish they're constantly fed by jerks like Trump and his cronies! Unfortunately, what they *really don't* care about is educating themselves and learning about the world around them, and what's going to happen to them if and/or when these tariffs are raised!

I think the low turn out percentage has it part of its root in some politicians delibrately making it more difficult to vote than nessesary, in the hope that it is mostly the oponent's voters that will be excluded. Furthermore, the right has done all they can to muddy it up, with their "alternative facts", which seem to be whatever Donald Trump thinks will suit his agenda i the current moment. There is so much probaganda out there, and the journalists do such a bad job combatting it, that I think a lot of people have a hard time figuring out what is up and what is down, and what the actual state of the country is. Finding good and reliable sources for information, is something that should be taught at school. It is when people can distinguish between real data and lies that the become vulnerable to giving power to conmen.

When I look at the numbers for the 2024 election it makes me think that trump didn't win so much as Harris lost. The voting age population increased by about 10 million between the 2020 and 2024 elections. trump got about 2.7 million more votes in 2024 than he did in 2020, which means the percentage of people who voted for him stayed almost exactly the same (29.42% >29.35). Harris got about 6.8 million fewer votes than Biden got in 2024, which was a substantial reduction in the percent of people who voted for the Democrat's candidate (32.2% > 28.4%). All those people who didn't vote for Harris had their reasons, but rather than vote for her opponent they simply didn't vote. If they had, perhaps many of them would have voted for trump, but if they just cared enough to vote we'd almost certainly have seen at least a common vote majority for Harris.

Scotland is boringly safe and unvenomous compared to other countries, but one thing that is happening here that I find massively concerning is the way cash is being phased out. They like to use the "cash isn't safe because of covid" argument but that's so obviously not the reason. Maybe I sound like one of those tin foil hat people but I don't want to find out what kind of shit the government will pull when money only exists digitally and every transaction is monitored.

Except - cash is only a symbol of money. The "real" money already only exists in bank records, and has done for a very long time. When "every transaction is monitored" - that worries me, except most transactions are already monitored. On the other hand, just so long as the UK government doesn't ban end-to-end strong encryption, our banking and shopping records will remain safe from government peeking and prying.

This is the single only thing that scares me in Australia too. There have been examples constantly of failures of non cash systems in banks, including internet and ATM's etc but they are still pushing cashless at us. ATM's for example, were supposed to reduce fees by reducing tellers in banks, now it's card transactions and electronic banking. It's all a lie, ATM's and eftpos have paid for themselves 1000 times over yet fees keep rising and because they collude you can't get around it.....how many more fees and controls will they impose when you have no cash and therefore no choice yet again? Too many blind and naive people just calming walking to the cliff with smiles on their faces and a Starbucks in one hand and an iPhone in the other.

Worker in safety gear holding a helmet, highlighting safety concerns in the country. Greek here. The fact that things that SHOULD be working safely, aren't.

Last year a passenger train crashed head-first into a freight train because the changing of the tracks on Greek railways is done manually by remote workers through a communications system, and something was communicated wrong. 57 people lost their lives because the direction of a passenger train wasn't changed manually. This happened after multiple complaints (across multiple years) from people in charge of the railway were sent to the government about how unsafe the system is currently, which were all ignored.

On top of that, there seems to be a very intentional cover-up of the whole incident, possibly because something bigger is tied to the explosion that happened during the crash and killed many of the victims. For one, the crash site was covered with gravel and concrete a week after the crash, allegedly to cover up evidence. Also, video evidence that was showing what was loaded into the freight train before it started its course went mysteriously missing.

Now most of us are not only even more skeptical of our government (as if we weren't before), but we also don't trust the railway or the metro to not literally kill us.

Why are the ethnic minorities in Yunnan, Hunan, Tibet, and Northeast China very obedient, while only the Uighurs in Xinjiang cause unrest, smashing, looting, and burning on the streets, and carrying bombs to train stations to carry out suicide attacks? Is it right to launch terrorist attacks because they believe in the extremist Islamic religion?

However, many problems are caused by overpopulation and overconsumption. 8 billion people currently living on Earth are more difficult to organise and provide for, and produce more waste, than 2.5 billion 75 years ago.

In my opinion, the crumbling healthcare system is so scary. We don't have enough family physicians, and the ones we have right now are either not taking any new patients, or are being very choosy. You have to have a family physician to get referrals for things like dermatology, oncology, psychiatry, etc. You can't just call up a specialist and make an appt. without a referral. But it sometimes can't be just a walk-in clinic doctor. It has to be from a designated family doctor. Mine retired long ago.

People want to live within x # of kms from the big cities (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver) but can't afford those. This is why WFH is so important (but not alwasy possible I get it), people could move to beautiful areas and not have to commute to the big cities. In Australia people are moving further and further from the city because it's cheaper. I moved 1.5hrs away from Melbourne because that's where I could afford to buy, but the rate of crime is even worse than where I had been renting in the outer suburbs. I would love to be further from town too, but the price of houses is higher there too. There is a great town 15mins away that I go to church and fitness classes in and is closer to my mum's house, but even with the higher price of housing there, there is a lot of crime, mostly by young people.

Maybe at one time. But life's made many of us "hard". I will say, has someone with Ontario license plates driving around in Nova Scotia and new brunswick, if I ever stop the car to look at a map complete strangers would drive up and ask if I was okay, did I need any help, was I lost? And the same thing happened in Saskatchewan and manitoba. They noticed here from out of province, they just want to make sure everything's okay. That happened once in Northern Ontario too but most of the time, there's just too many people in southern ontario, you just kind of learn to keep "mental blinders on" you can't afford to help everyone all the time. There's too many people, and it could be a scam or a trick. In certain parts of the country people are still kind to strangers even if that is naive

From what I've read, most vitamin supplements aren't helpful for most people most of the time. Vitamin D is one of the exceptions (along with folic acid if you're going to be pregnant - spina bifida prevention). Those of us who live in countries without much winter sun really ought to be taking vitamin D supplements.

💯 I'm British and this scares me as well. The Salvation Army hostel has been closed down in my city meaning even more people on the streets. Social housing is virtually impossible to get now because there aren't that many available thanks to demolitions and the right to buy scheme. Many private landlords are charging high rents for poor quality housing, in addition to the sometimes thousands of pounds being charged upfront before you even move in. If tenants dare to complain about landlords not doing repairs, landlords can hit them with a section 21 eviction notice. Buying a house is only possible if you can save up the 10% deposit, which is nigh on impossible if most of your income is going towards paying for privately rented housing. Only last year, our then Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, had the bare faced cheek to call homelessness a lifestyle choice and wanted to make rough sleeping a criminal offence, because the sight of seeing people sleeping on the street or in tents was ruining her view or something.

A lack of housing in the UK was solved after WW2 by a massive programme of house building to provide council owned homes for rent. The same could be done now, starting inside six months, if the political will were there. I found out recently that there was cross-party support for council housing wiping out private rented accomondation right up until Mrs T's lot took over in 1979. Sometimes, you really can blame the government.

I blame the rich and the government for letting them get away with it. We need a progressive tax for ownership. The more houses you own the more you're taxed. This wont put a dent in the middle class that have saved for a holiday second home but it will slowly suffocates the rich corporations out of the market, lowering prices, making building/renovating houses to gain profit more enticing and forcing a turn over of property so the young can get onto the ladder.

That's what Australia is going through now. First they added tax for properties that didn't have anything built on them for x number of years. Now they are looking at changing negative gearing. In a way, Covid helped push this, because places that were air bnbs etc were made to accept other short term rentals. I hope it is going in the right direction, but who knows. My state has an election next year and it is highly likely the current government is going out and I know the opposition has more motivation stop these changes.

What annoys me is that nobody every seems to want to address the issue of all the empty houses and flats in every village, town and city in the UK. They cannot claim that there is a housing shortage when there are thousands and thousands of properties laying empty. OK so some of them might need renovation work but why can't they do what they did in Liverpool and sell them for £1 each on condition that the new owners carried out the renovation.

    Forrest Hobbs
    Community Member
1 year ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Because most of the empty houses are owned by private property investors, not by the council as in Liverpool. The private property investors are waiting for the right phase of the property market to spend money on renovation - and in the meantime, the less housing there is on the market, the more they can charge for the houses which can be inhabited. That's why the government needs to take control of housing policy and pass laws to force private property investors to either get the homes inhabitable (meeting proper standards), or force them to sell. Compulsory purchase might be another route to getting the empty homes back into use.

If we had a sensible housing policy implemented by the government, we'd have no housing shortage. Do you really think that housing for that many extra people couldn't have been built in a decade if the government had wanted it built? The government changed the rules after Brexit to increase immigration. Having done that, a competent government would have implemented a sane housing policy to address the inevitable population increase - except, of course, the Conservative party went barking mad years ago.

I'm yet to see this lack of housing? There's plenty of houses, just too many people due to other factors and the fact our government give them precedence over those that have actually paid for it.

In my town, house prices have doubled in under 10 years and almost all "green areas" (Fields / forests / Meadows) have been eradicated to stick single household dwellings or multi residents. It's disgusting. The roads aren't being improved to keep up, and it's basically a big 'screw you' to any wild animals. So all the coyotes and foxes and raccoons and deer and skunks and opossums and all the other critters who used to be a part of our life, well bug off, we need all this land for more people.

So many areas in Australia are finding the same. There are housing developments where it can take 1-2hrs to get kids to school by car because of the traffic, even though it should only be a 20 minute drive, there are just not enough schools and roads to get to them. Green space is diminishing so quickly. There are a number of developments that are going up near me on flood plains, in an area that keeps getting more and more floods!

Canada at least has the space to expand. Try living in Southeast England where they are desperate to build on any and all available land despite our roads grinding to a halt every day and a rail network that's hundreds of years old and extremely expensive. Hotels are ridiculously expensive as we're housing thousands of immigrants in them, meaning the ones that aren't can charge what they like.

I say this, too, but despite the size of the country, most of the land is uninhabitable. Either due to it being farmland, protected nature parks, or it's not suitable for development. Most of the population is crowded near the US/Canada border, and the majority live in the southern Ontario pocket. There is not as much reliable, affordable public transportation that goes from city to city, province to province. Some roads are seasonal, cutting off communities in the summer until winter, when the lakes have frozen over.

I'm from Ireland and at the moment, there are a large number of crises converging and reaching tipping points because the governance over the last decade has been so unbelievably ineffectual. Wages are good, but that's about it. There are not enough houses, so homelessness is at an all time high. Rents are astronomically high if you're lucky enough to find a place. House prices are climbing almost day by day. Juvenile delinquency and violent crimes are becoming extremely common and because police pensions have been slashed, there aren't enough of them being recruited, and any time one of them actually does bother doing their job, the courts are as likely to let someone walk free as convict them. A lot of this has given rise to a wave of right wing nationalism, with certain parties running for our upcoming election on the basis that "Ireland is Full", targeting asylum seekers and refugees with online hate and, in some extreme cases, violence. There have been spates of arson attacks on buildings that are rumoured to be earmarked for direct provision for immigrants. About a year ago, a young girl was attacked by a man with a knife and hurt grievously in Dublin city centre. It was rumoured this man was not Irish and within hours these knuckle draggers were out to "protect Irish children" and the city was being looted, police attacked, city buses and trams were being burnt out all over the city.

Things are bad over here at the moment and it's hard to see how they're going to improve because it's just f*****g everything at the minute.

Zealand (Netherlands) has decided that all deer need to be shot, because too dangerous for traffic. Zealand is a very rural province, with a few high speed roads. There is one highway, with 100-130 km/h, and a couple of motorways with 100 km/h. Deer are not a problem there. The rest is 80 km/h, no deer problem there, and 60 km/h roads. The latter are "the problem". These are roads crossing the fields, mainly used by agricultural traffic and very local traffic. People like living in Zealand due to the nature and animals close by. So you know that there are animals around, so you have to stick to max 60 and keep your eyes on the road. Accidents with deer happen to young people racing over the "empty" roads and having eyes and minds on their smartphones. It's not the deer being stupid, it's the people.

Yes, they are having to let criminals out of prison early, but that's because the previous government of 14 years followed policies of worsening the crime rate, locking up more people, and running down the prison estate so that we don't actually have the space for everyone who's supposed to be locked up.

UK resident here. Creeping authoritarianism, unaccountable elites and a massive assault on free speech.

Both the mainstream parties are guilty of causing and encouraging this slide, but the current government is really showing what the powers the establishment have been steadily putting in place for the last 3 decades are capable of. Now an attack on small farms and the introduction of Blackrock to "invest in the UK." And that's without mentioning the seeming rush by the USA and UK to escalate the war in Ukraine.

It was poorly thought out, yes, but wasn't meant as an attack on small farmers. Also, the only nation escalating the war in Ukraine is Russia.

Strays dogs are rare to see in the UK. We are a nation of dog lovers so even if a dog was stray, it wouldn't be very long before it was reported to the RSPCA or somebody has taken it in. The only wild animals you're likely to see on the streets in the UK are hedgehogs and the occasional fox on the hunt for food in the bins.
