Gum And Comic For A Penny
Love It!
“Getting old” can be a pretty relative term. While most of us would agree that pensioners are “old,” you can also be hit by a wave of “oldness” when you first realize that you aren’t quite as up-to-date with popular culture. Or perhaps you overhear the younger generation (whose existence is already a sign) refer to the films you watch or music you listen to as “retro.”
Despite our best efforts, there is no escape from getting older. Of all the processes on this planet, the passage of time is the one we can’t even start to influence. Realistically, people need to make peace with the fact that every second they fight aging, they age regardless. Instead, images like the ones in this post serve to remind and perhaps educate beyond anything else.

I remember when we first got a phone that had a speakerphone function. That was groundbreaking.
In much of the world, aging is actually celebrated. In Korea, when one turns 60, they will have a special party called a hwangap. Part of this celebration’s history comes from the fact that many people in the pre-modern era did not even reach the age of 60. As a result, Koreans have also started to celebrate “Gohi” or “Chilsun” when they turn 70 and “Palsun” when they reach the venerable age of 80.

One reason to make your peace with aging is that it can actually help you live longer. A positive self-perception of health in old age appears to be directly correlated with longer lifespans. So if living as long as possible is really important, then it’s almost as vital to believe it will happen. Worrying just wastes time for little-to-no gain.

It Was Much More Rewarding. I Miss Researching And Enjoy Reading My Encyclopedias!
After my parents bought me a set of Encyclopedias at the age of 11, I announced that I would no longer be going to school since I could now look up anything I needed to know!
Memory plays just as important a part. We tend to have a lot of what scientists call “flashbulb” memories, itself a reference to older cameras that would provide lighting with a bright flash from a lightbulb. These are instances, moments, and events that feel “burned” into our memories. Traumatic or important events are often featured, particularly if it was something shared with many people. Witnesses of 9/11 would be an example of “flashbulb” memories.

We do tend to remember our firsts, as they set the standards and expectations for most events. First kisses, first days of school, and first day on a job all feature here, even though subsequent ones will often be forgotten very quickly. Try to imagine a specific day in fourth grade in November and most of us will draw a blank, even though in the abstract we have an idea of what could have happened and what the classroom may have looked like.

You got dropped off? We would take ourselves there by bus or bike. (From about 10 years old.)
That being said, memories do degrade with the passing of time. Most “unimportant” memories disappear after the first couple of days unless there is a reminder or we convince ourselves to keep track of something. So if many of the things seen here are the first time you’ve thought of them in years, that’s a normal function of how our memory works. This “whiplash” of seeing something the brain has purposefully forgotten is also why these images might make someone feel “old.”

Of course, a lack of attention also plays a part. If you stop to carefully look around you, there are a lot of dates. Colors, shapes, textures. Remember, every place you have ever gone has an abundance of information that, thankfully, our brain filters out. It’s enough to know in the abstract that most walls have some sort of coat of paint without systematically categorizing every wall you have ever seen. It could be a cool party trick, but realistically you would just get overwhelmed.

Plus, as you age you take in a lot of new memories and information. Like building on top of a ruin, new memories “push back” older ones and make them harder to retain. The deeper these ideas are buried, the “older” one feels when they are rediscovered through the images here, or visiting a once-familiar place after a long time.

Just A Random Question
Can still find cans that open like this now. Corned beef comes to mind.

What also causes these feelings of “being old” is the fact that, despite what we often think, our memories are not actually recordings. We can misremember all sorts of details, falsify memories, and remove or add things that never actually happened. This only becomes apparent when we encounter images such as these that serve as a reminder that a lot of things we think we remember don’t actually look the way they did.

Uhh... lightning can indeed blow out your TV. And stereo, and anything else that's plugged in. We had a strike hit close to the house and it blew some fuses.
Happened to a cousin of mine. Lightning struck the box at the end of their road, and every single electronic device that was plugged in, switched on or not, was destroyed. I've had my TV and router destroyed by lightning this year!! Thank goodness for insurance.
Load More Replies...They wouldn’t let you make any phone calls, or even take a bath or shower either, because they thought the lightning could come through the phone or the pipes and electrocute you.
It blew the cordless phone off the cradle at my grandma's house once so they weren't wrong. I wouldn't have believed it but my grandma and sister had the exact same story and my teenaged sister refused to touch the phone during a thunderstorm again!
Load More Replies...My siblings and I were told to be quiet because God was doing His work. We usually ended up falling asleep trying to wait for it to end. 🥱
My sister and I were told to turn off as many lights, unplug as many electronics, close or stay away from as many windows (if they were open), and avoid using the corded phone as much as possible, too!
Well for me it actually did a few years ago. Well, not the TV but my XBox. I knew it wouldnt go through the electric plugs so I kept playing when the thunder starten - then all of a sudden a loud boom and the screen goes black, then turns on again but now all green and flickering. Thought the TV was gone, but then I hear my XBox buzzing and it smelled burned. The lightning went through the internet cables... XBox was totally fried.
I had someone come in when I worked at Radio Shack asking for a better multi-plug in extension for her TV and stuff. Evidently her last one was fried by lightning and it actually saved her electronics! Don't cheap out on those, they are worth the extra cash
lol that's pushing a bit mum 😆....I can understand her thinking though electricity and water
Load More Replies...Yes, because they understood that having the television aerial attached to the chimney meant that it was the highest point on the house and was therefore most likely to be struck by lighting. Very well understood by my dad who worked in overhead power distribution and saw exactly what lightning could do on a regular basis.
That’s why aerials were always heavily grounded
Load More Replies...I remember the tv programs would actually turn themselves off at night ..
yep right after the national anthem (UK).....3 TV channels until 1984 (or there about) when we got .......4
Load More Replies...Yep but we lived at 4000ft in the middle of the high desert so lightning strikes were pretty common.
Yeah but just turning it off wouldn’t help. You have to unplugged it. Especially if you have aerial power lines. They get hit and make it past your breaker it will burn up your appliances. This isn’t an old thing it’s still true today. It’s just not as common of an occurrence as people believed when we were younger. Make sure your breaker is properly grounded can help a lot.
I always use a surge protector on my tv because I was told it would protect it. Guess it works...?
Well, it can. I had a TV (and an old 56k modem) fried by lightning because the cables for the antenna and phone were on the outside of our building, and lightning struck. Didn't explode or anything - just gave a really loud pop and died. Didn't have a TV for the next couple of months because I couldn't afford a new one. But I remember reading around 5 books a week instead - kinda miss that sometimes.
My mother would cover all the cutlery and mirrors in case they " attracted" the lightning. I personally love thunderstorms.
My grandfather was a tv repairman, he was very insistent about turning off the tv and disconnecting the antenna during s thunderstorm. We were at an aunt's house one rainy day and she herded all the kids into the living room to watch a movie on tv. I reminded her about our grandfather's warning, she shushed me. In the middle of the movie, lightening hit the antenna and the tv caught on fire.
we had it happen once. the telegraph pole on the corner was struck by lightning, and it was only the TVs that were fried.
It still can. If you don't want to risk a brown out frying your electronics then you shut down and unplug.
Back in those days we had a GIANT antenna on our roof which might as well have been a lightening rod course out house got hit twice when I was younger and it melted ever plugged in!!
Blew up my best mates VHS back in the day. So the insurance replaced the oldest, most knackered hand-crank video recorder with the most up-to-date one on the market.
I had a friend who very narrowly avoided getting killed when lightning caused his TV to blow out. The one that got me was being told to stay away from the windows during a thunderstorm. I broke that "rule" every chance I got. Used to love watching the lightning. Still do, actually.
It happened to me in 1982. A nearby lightning strike knocked out my television.
What TV? We went about 7 years without a TV because my dad didn't want me exposed to religion!
Lightning hit a friends house and went through the whole electrical system. Thousands of dollars of damage. UNPLUG everything
I had to hang up the phone if I was on it and IMMEDIATELY get out of the shower/tub if my mom heard thunder.
We weren’t allowed to talk on the phone during a storm either. Some urban legend about a guy getting truck by lightning through the phone line or something like that.
It's actually true. Lighting once destroyed my computer, when I forgot to unplug it.
Despite growing up with electronics (born in 1953), and in a stormy location, I never actually observed this until very recently when a lightning-induced power surge took out the controllers in two of my window fans. These days I have all my "real" electronics plugged into UPS surge protectors (I hate waiting for things to reboot...), but who'da thunk that a *fan* was vulnerable?!
I was the one who had to go unplug everything and plug it back in once the storm had passed...
Oh, and lightening is something you do with bleach
Load More Replies...Still have to pull all the plugs at my dad's house during a thunder storm. When I was a kid I was home alone when a storm came. I pulled the plugs just in time, but lightning hit just the same and the outlet caught fire. Lucky I was in the same room, really. Managed to put it out using a towel. Ah, the 90s.
About 20 years ago, we had lightning come out 2 TVs, it struck the ungrounded cable outside our apartment.
Yeah. As soon as we heard thunder, we'd go around the house unplugging all electrical devices. I live in Florida, which is the lightning capital of the country; we've lost several TVs over the years due to lightning.
even now, I know of someone who's computer got blown out during a storm a few years ago. It's best to have your tech plugged into a surge protector if you can

Nope, she bought a new one like this, except hers had a square tub. She believed it got clothes cleaner and she'd put her favorite tunes on the old GE radio, and enjoyed her "alone time" while spending hours in the laundry room, washing clothes for a family of eight. With the exception of during winter, she always hung everything outside on the clothesline.

To be fair, most of them has become pop culture icons, so yeah of course most people would've done/had/seen them. Like the Flintstones, it's not aired anymore, but everybody knows them. Or the stupid alarm clock, it's not being sold anymore, but since EVERYBODY had them, the chance that you've seen them is pretty huge.
Load More Replies...It was a delight to see examples even 5 to 10 years older than I am. I'm not so old after all. Also a delight that most of these are international, not just limited to the USA.
Well, this was a waste of time. Did you mean: when I see these things, I think back to my youth? Or did you mean things that don't exist anymore (because epic fail)? Or, like the pictures of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell and Cheech and Chong make me feel old? I don't get it: I looked at the FB page from which the "writers" compiled this mess, and there were so many choices that were actually true to the theme--how hard did they have to search for this mess?
The best part about a lot of these is they span a decent amount of generations. I’m a millennial and some of the older stuff (rotary phone, the crib, the electric counter top grill) were a regular part of my childhood because those products lasted so long. Also my dad worked for the phone company which explains why we had a working rotary phone at home into the 90’s.
