After my parents bought me a set of Encyclopedias at the age of 11, I announced that I would no longer be going to school since I could now look up anything I needed to know!

My husband didn't believe me when I told him some random fact one day and he told me that he planned to buy an encyclopedia so that he can fact check me in the future. I've never laughed so hard in a long time. 1) He was on his computer when he said it. 2) We have a bookshelf full of them already.

Many years ago my mom’s friend’s husband had a bunch of these and we would flip through them when we got bored, he came down and saw us, and said’ you know if you read every one of them encyclopedias, you can become president’ , oh Mr Jack, if you only knew

My parents bought both a Colliers Encyclopedia and a World Book Encyclopedia.

I had encyclopaedias when I was a child but when I got that Encarta 95 disc for the computer….😲

and even those seemed magical - like someone had travelled the breadth and width oi this world and written down everything that exists.

I read 3 complete encyclopedias in high school rather than do homework (I graduated 52nd in my class - number 53 did not graduate).

We had our own Britannica. Even the rich kids didn't. I still have it. I was also expert with the card catalog.

My mom still has ours, missing a few letters, though.

I loved encyclopedias!!!!! I could spend a weekend at my dad's reading in his starting from A. Lol. I was a nerd kid and my dad wasn't good at playing with kids/his kid. So his encyclopedias were like GOLD to me 🤓

The Folks bought a set after Dad retired and we weren't moving anymore. Sis was still in grade school and I was in high school. It was nice to have our own set at home to look things up.

Me at 8: Mommy, how do you spell (insert a word with a silent first letter, like pneumonia). Mom: Look it up in the dictionary. FYI y'all, dictionaries are alphabetical by proper spelling; not by how they sound phonically. And honestly, the woman knew the correct spelling every time... still perplexes me to this day.

I sold Colliers Encyclopedia door to door in the summer of 1973. And parents bought them for their kids!

I had to get rid of many of them that I've had all my life. Nobody wanted them and I'mmstill crying and missing them

And salesmen came to your door and sold you an awesome set ...World Book and Encyclopedia Britannica were the top 2 that I remember.

I still read dictionaries. We had wonder books too.

My dad bought us a set and I actually read them from A-Z. I also used to randomly read the dictionary for fun.

Yeah having Encyclopedia's was awesome and people thought that was a sign of wealth to have a complete set of Encyclopedias...

Oh my Lord. I swear every other phrase from my mom was "go look it up". I really miss our Childcraft books and my mom's Reader's Digest Condensed books. I wish I had them now!!! Ooohhh, when I go see my dad, I need to make a note to look in the old house. They might still be there. I haven't been there since my sophomore year of college.

We had a full set of Brittanica-- Dad proudly bought a book each payday until set complete--- used it often

my uncle has the whole series of encyclopedias, it was a prestige having the expensive books

it's a well known fact that you can only learn from text and images if they are in a book. kids today huh?

I used to read the encyclopedias, and then my kids would say, "Mom, what's..."

We only got the three-volume shortened edition. Can't remember what they were called.

And a lot more fun.

I have 3 sets of encyclopedias. 2 sets of childrens and 1 set of Funk and Wagnals (sp? that I bought 1 volume a week from a grocery store) They're all stored in boxes and I Google everything.

How many tiny questions did you have that you forgot before you had time to look it up? How many actors did you see in movies and wonder where you saw them before? How many animals that you saw at the zoo had an entry in your encyclopedia? I love encyclopedias but Google is great for quick answers and moving on with my day

I have the set my parents bought. I tried to give them to a second hand store but they said they were to old. So I use them for risers now days. My snakes cage is sitting on four right now!!

You mean those books that fill up the top shelf because they are so out of date.
