Having a terrible day at work can be frustrating, overwhelming, and even demoralizing. Whether it's a challenging project, an annoying colleague, or just a series of misfortunes, sadly, there are plenty of reasons you might feel like you're a failure.

But as Sigrid and Bring Me The Horizon sang, "It's just a bad day / Not a bad life." And one of the ways to recover is by venting online. So we at Bored Panda decided to remind ourselves that the universe hasn't conspired against any of us. From time to time, everyone runs into some (undeserved) adversity.

Continue scrolling to see all the messed-up nonsense people have had to deal with on the job! And when you're done, see more fails previously posted here.

I've lost my faith in humanity. What we do defines us and this is what we do. We are not stewards of the land or caretakers. We are a blight. We are just vultures picking at the carcass of a dying world.

I Work As A Valet And Make $3.85/Hour And I Received This As A Tip

AyeBenji Report

Getting dealt a bad hand at work isn't the end of the world. Especially for content employees. According to Annie McKee, Ph.D., who is a best-selling business book author and advisor to top global leaders, from CEOs of Fortune 500 companies to government officials, those who are engaged with their jobs and colleagues work harder — and smarter. But that's quite rare.

"Far too many couldn’t care less about what’s happening around them," McKee wrote in Harvard Business Review. "For them, Wednesday is 'hump day' and they’re just working to get to Friday. And then there’s the other end of the bell curve — that nearly one out of five employees is actively disengaged. These people are sabotaging projects, backstabbing colleagues, and generally wreaking havoc in their workplaces."

Sudden_Chard8860 Report

"Disengaged, unhappy people aren’t any fun to work with, don’t add much value, and impact our organizations (and our economy) in profoundly negative ways," McKee explained.

"It’s even worse when leaders are disengaged because they infect others with their attitude. Their emotions and mindset impact others’ moods and performance tremendously. After all, how we feel is linked to what and how we think. In other words, thought influences emotion, and emotion influences thinking."

Consequences Of Working In A -10°C Lab Where I Have To Wash My Hands 40 Times A Day

reddit.com Report

McKee thinks it’s time to finally blow up the myth that feelings don’t matter at work.

"Science is on our side: there are clear neurological links between feelings, thoughts, and actions. When we are in the grip of strong negative emotions, it’s like having blinders on," she said. "We focus mostly — sometimes only — on the source of the pain. We don’t process information as well, think creatively, or make good decisions. Frustration, anger, and stress cause an important part of us to shut down —the thinking, engaged part. Disengagement is a natural neurological and psychological response to pervasive negative emotions."

I've worked at a book seller some time ago and this is a normal occurrence with remaindered paperbacks that just won't sell.. From what I can see the front covers are torn off to be sent back to the publisher as proof. Book sellers, even the big stores, cannot afford to return the entire book due to the cost of shipping.

Trust me that the workers hate it too. The publishers require that if the book doesn't sell within its run, you rip off the front cover to send back to them for a refund then you must, by law, throw out the rest.

Book stores are contractually required to dispose of or destroy unsold books after they return the covers to the publisher for a refund. If they sold or gave away these books, they could be criminally charged with fraud.

correct, once you have claimed a credit for a sale-or-return book, the book technically belongs to the publisher.

To everyone saying they could be donated or given away: the bookstore only gets a credit for the unsold stock if the covers are returned both as proof of unsold stock and to render the stock unsaleable. Margins are relatively low in bookselling (higher than grocery, which relies on volume, but much, much lower than fashion) and booksellers can't afford to give up the credits. This style of credit management is generally restricted to very mass market titles such as specific romance brands.

Used to work at Borders. We had to do the same exact thing. Rip off the front cover (to send to the publisher, proving that we didn't sell the book) & throw the entire book into the trash. If someone took the book for themselves (without the front cover) it was considered theft.

If books don't sell, book stores are legally required to tear off the cover and discard. As a librarian (and former Waldenbooks employee) I don't like it, either, but millions of new books are published every year. If we didn't discard, we'd be awash.

in order to get credit for unsold books stores are instructed to tear off the cover, send it to the publishing company, and dispose of the books, the publishing company will reimburse the store based on the covers they receive, the good thing is that the people working in those stores usually get to take home as many free books as possible

These are strips. This is what happens. No one bought them. People want new titles? Old titles gotta go. Trees were grown specifically to make books. When they cut the trees down, more were planted. These are being recycled. The alternative is shipping them back, which is that much more pollution. The printed word is sacred, but these are just a *copy* of that. In most cases, employees can take these home—publishers like booksellers to be informed—but there are so very many.

Better a coverless/stripped book in the trash than the jobber wrapping the stripped book (which they've been reimbursed for) and selling it 3 for $10 at a convenience store. That's literally theft. The publisher doesn't get paid, nor does the author. Plus, the publisher has paid the jobber back for stripping the book, so double theft.

This is a legal requirement. Though they could have recycled the paper - that looks like regular trash. Has been a thing with books / magazines for years. Publishers want stands/stores to stock product. Stands do so with promise to be able to return unsold for credit. To avoid shipping tons of unwanted product back, most publishers take just the covers as proof the product wasn't being sold at retail. But the conditions require they books are not being put out to the public because the publisher bought them back. Is wasteful but shipping them back to be discarded at the other end is more wasteful.

jennikeestra avatar

And, in fact, not all the publishers that require full copies (the entire book) to be shipped back actually practise reverse inventory i.e. putting the back into their warehoused stock to be resold. In these cases the books are pulped at the return collection point - but there is the added cost and environmental impact of shipping the entire book.

Yes. This is standard practice in the book industry. They are not sold. You have to remove the cover and send that part back to the publisher. Then you have to dispose of the book. It is illegal for you to do anything else with it, including sell, donate , distribute. If you have a problem with it, try to change the law.

Tearing covers off and sending them back to the publisher for book credit is standard industry practice. If bookstores can't do this, they will buy (and make available) fewer books. You actually benefit from this practice by having a wider selection in front of you.

I don't know who decides when a book is pulled from the shelf. Yeah, instead of paying to ship unsold books back to be destroyed or marked down, publishers have the covers removed and the book says inside "If this book is sold without a cover, then the author and publisher received no compensation for it and it was reported destroyed." That has always bothered me when they could just mark them down until they sell.

Having owned a bookstore and worked in libraries, you absolutely do throw books away. They're objects like anything else, they're not sacred; these in this picture will be mass market books that didn't sell - you return the cover for credit, and recycle the unwanted book. Quick note about these. All the front covers have been removed. These are called stripped books. Basically, a publisher may contact a book seller and request they destroy a number of books. This can be due to a mistake, or some issue with the contract of the writer the publisher has, or really any host of other issues. The front covers are removed and returned to the publisher, who in turn gives the book store credit. Legally, once the front covers are removed (IE once the books are 'stripped') they are reported as destroyed and can't be sold, or donated, and must either be recycled, or sent to a land fill, or burned. What happens depends entirely on if there is a recycling plant handy, or if the bookstore has access to an incinerator or not. Always remember, if you see a book in a bookstore, that is being sold very cheaply which lacks its front cover, the bookstore is illegally selling it. It's a form of fraud. They're already being paid for it once.

If this is waste from an actual book store, than I’d like to know the reasons behind the decision in this day and age of easy recycling and emphasis on pre-loved. If it’s from a library then there would be very good reasons why each book was binned, librarians don’t just go mad and fling all their spare books into the rubbish - however, in the UK there would be sales of the books at libraries, before getting rid.

Some of them don’t appear to have front covers, which indicates that something else is wrong — type that runs off the page, 3 chapter 2s and no chapters 3, 4, 5, or other printing problems) or sometimes damage rendering the book unreadable. Recycling is about the only thing you can do.

Well, I agree both with Headless Roach and with the librarians and bookstore workers. I once threw away a very old copy of LOTR that had fallen apart completely, pages had turned dark yellow, it really was unusable and I gifted myself a new and illustrated copy. But the covers were so beautiful, I apologise to The Lost Copy on a regular basis.

This is appalling. And I remember doing this before we had any awareness (like, 1980) because although they cannot be sold legally without their covers (there is message to that effect inside the book), and it wasn't cost-effective for either the publisher or the store to pay to ship them back, which would have left the publisher with the same issue. I can't believe it never occurred to us to donate them somewhere, anywhere.

Notice that they don't have covers?? For at least the past 60 years (my mother worked in the industry and I am old), that is how book sellers are credited by publishers: They send back only the book covers and waste the rest. I saw the waste as a child and it hasn't changed.

Ooook let me explain this. Recyclers will not except glossy covers for recycling. These are books that are not selling and the publisher does not want the whole book back for credit...and the book seller could not afford to sent them back to begin with. So the covers of the books are removed as it has the information needed for the store to get credit and the rest of the book is discarded in the trash. I blame the recycling technology for this not the store.

I once worked at a chain bookstore...once we were told to toss out all the unsold books, videos, etc that couldn't be returned to the corporate HQ and I had the temerity to suggest that we donate them all to some deserving charity. I almost got fired. Same thing at a chain retailer's garden shop: all the unsold plants were destroyed rather than have them donated. It's a retail thing.

The book distributors don't want the entire book returned. The book stores only have to rip off the front cover and return that to the company for refund/credit to their account. I have no idea how or who determines it's time to take the book off the shelf and toss into the trash. Rip off the cover and donate the books to a school, care facility, hospital, etc.

How many times does the answer to this need to be posted? They remove the front covers and return them to the publishers for credit on unsold stock. The book must then be destroyed or disposed off and cannot be resold by law.

New Guy Tried To Empty The Fryer Grease Into A Plastic Bucket

walskov Report

However, it’s not just negative emotions we need to watch out for. "Extremely strong positive emotions have the same effect," McKee said.

"Some studies show that too much happiness can make you less creative and prone to engage in riskier behaviors (think about how we act like fools when we fall in love!). On the work front: I’ve seen groups of people worked up into a frenzy at sales conferences and corporate pep rallies. Little learning or innovation comes out of these meetings. Throw in a lot of alcohol and you’ve got a whole host of other problems."

So it sounds like having your suspenders stuck in your chair every once in a while can be actually quite beneficial.

Over 2,000 Pounds Of Fresh Pork Being Rejected By The Walmart Distribution Center Because The Sell By Dates Occur When Their Stores Are Closed For Thanksgiving

This product will still be safe to eat for the next 15 days but they won't even attempt to sell it. This will end up in a dumpster today.

OTTER__VOMIT Report

Since nobody can prepare for the unexpected (just the way they can react to it), it isn't surprising that workers worry about other things.

"One could argue that today's employees are as equally stressed as their predecessors, but for different reasons," said Jodi Chavez, president of Atlanta-based Randstad Professionals, a segment of Randstad US, which provides finance, accounting, HR, sales, marketing, legal staffing and recruitment services. "They fear having their jobs outsourced to another country, have anxiety about how best to work alongside new technologies such as automation and robotics, have increased financial pressures with rising student loan debt and late retirement, and feel pressure to be 'on' and answering e-mails 24/7."

In difficult times, you need to find an internal reserve of energy and hope to help you make your way through. In other words, you need to tap into your resilience.

"Like so many other human traits, resilience can be woven into the fabric of one’s being (nature) and/or it can be learned (nurture)," career and business coach Marjie Terry said.

"One’s natural disposition may lead them to always look on the bright side or to look for the silver lining. For others, with an accumulation of life experience, they develop a resilience perspective and realize that, as the old saying goes, what doesn’t break you makes you stronger. They develop an ability to recognize that it’s important to keep going even when life hands you challenge after challenge—they develop perspective."

Sometimes, there really isn't much else we can do but endure. And laugh!

We had a lot of foreign contractors work at my company at one time, we had a "last name first initial' email naming policy, I was always sure to ask them first if the naming was ok and not inappropriate for their language, and was always sure to check new names. We could also set up aliases if they wanted a 'personalized' favorite email name.

We had a cork board at work where employees could leave “compliments”/happy note cards about their fellow co-workers. Terrible idea for morale. There are employees who choose not to socialize, or cannot due to anxiety, shyness, or introverted nature, and it hurts them as other employees may see them as unfriendly when they aren’t. The people who don’t socialize/act friendly will never get compliment cards (or Valentines etc) and that sucks. IMO a stupid and unfair system as not everyone is the same levels of energy, friendliness, socialization, etc.

At least, from the looks of it, it wasn't entirely bad...just a semi-bad day (I'm sorry, even I'm ashamed of me for that one)

My Boss's Dog, Which Doesn't Belong At Work To Begin With, Tore Up My Mango Plant, That I Grew From A Mango I Had Eaten

My Boss's Dog, Which Doesn't Belong At Work To Begin With, Tore Up My Mango Plant, That I Grew From A Mango I Had Eaten

Boss wasn't present for this, so I texted him to let him know, and all he had to say was "How much do I owe you?"

What was the boss supposed to say? Couldn’t the employee just find out how much it would cost to replace the plant at that approximate size? Was there some emotional attachment because it grew from a mango they ate? I don’t understand the problem here.

Has anybody noticed that the majority of people being drug tested tend to be factory workers? None of the upper class people are subject to this. Congress, who passed this legislation, is exempt, also people like judges, CEOs, etc. I got in trouble with my company after being sent for a drug test after injuring my finger. When I got back, I told HR "I'll put my p**s up against management's any day." I got away with that because I was in a good union.

I once worked in a call center where the head of the department would often provide a special lunch for us. We could also eat at our desks. One time when they bought pizza and wings, my manager, who had desk behind me, sat down with his food...and immediately spilled it all over his keyboard. I felt so bad for him, but I was glad it wasn't me!

I can understand that. Some people won't answer the phone and turn the ring volume down so they don't have to listen to it.

I'm surprised the bike was still there with the way this bike is locked. It wouldn't take more than a few seconds to take that wheel off.
