I was admitted to the hospital a couple years ago for a stroke, admitted straight from the ER. Insurance initially denied coverage because I didn't get advance permission for the hospital stay. It's not like I was there for funsies. Also, a doctor's office fought my insurance for over a year to get a treatment the insurance denied as "experimental" despite having been fully approved by the FDA for fourteen years. They pulled shady b******t by sending me completely illegible forms to try and fight my case, but the doctor's office used a third-party service that had pristine copies of the forms to send me whenever insurance pulled that garbage.

I have a auto immune disease in my lungs, had to go for early ct scans to make sure it was not progressing. Insurance tried to say it was not medically necessary. My Pulmonologist got on a 3 way call with them & demanded you know their expertise because he specializes in my disease. He said I can't believe you are wasting y time on this when I have sick patients. The insurance person just stammered through the conversation & approved the CT scan. It was fantastic but I also wish it never had to be done. Our insurance now denies my husbands epilesy meds that he has been taking for years because they are expensive & they say try something else. Insurance in the US SUX

I once had my insurance company refuse to cover a doctor's visit when I broke my arm because it was a "pre-existing condition." Like yes, the condition existed prior to my arriving at the doctor's office, but I figure that's why we go to the doctor's office in general?!?!!?

Yea, medical biller for anesthesia here. I have had to do quite a few appeals because the insurance said ANESTHESIA for an appendectomy was not medically necessary. I really wanted to call and talk to utilization review and ask if they would like to get their appendix cut out without anesthesia.

I got one of those after being in the hospital with pneumonia. ER doctor said he couldn't send me home on oxygen, so I stayed long enough to be able to breathe without it and got out as quickly as I could, and the insurance company didn't care that the pulmonologist saw the X-ray and wanted to go in and clear out my lungs manually, they still said it wasn't necessary...

cancel insurance. Put any money you would have given them into a piggy bank. Break that puggy when needed

My son had the same sort of reply for his insulin, which was rejected. When he called the insurance company, he was shuffled from one person to another who told him his request had also been reviewed by medical personnel and found unnecessary. He finally began simply asking are you the medical professional who decides if people should just die? NO? Then transfer me to that person. He finally got the decision reversed and was allowed to have his insulin.

The "experienced healthcare professionals" are unethical docs who have sold out and now work only for the insurance companies. They would sell their own grandma for a few dollars. I would say "sold their souls", but those were taken ages ago. 👿

Make sure you review what insurance you do have when you enroll.

I got a letter like this and panicked. I took it to my doctor and he said "just wait. Insurance is a funny thing and takes time but It will go through. If you get another one in a month or 2 then we will work with you" I didn't get another letter.

Over and over again I thank my lucky star I was born in Sweden, with next to free health care, and not America!

This denial is from anthem Blue Cross. See logo and titling an upper right. If you have anthem Blue Cross get a different insurance company.

My insurance did this to me for my teenager’s wisdom tooth. Only one tooth, not asking for prophylactic extraction. And it was coming in sideways. He spent months in pain as I fought with insurance. They claimed it wasn’t medically necessary because (a) it wasn’t abscessed or (b) it hadn’t impacted the neighboring tooth. So they would rather pay significantly more for work after he spent more time in pain, than approve removal at the needed time. I changed insurance companies during the next open enrollment.

They pulled that on me for something once. You know what I did, I told them that I was going to sue them for every single seizure that I had and believe me I would have been set up for life. All of the sudden they changed their tune and called me back and approved my medicine.

Most insurance companies want you to call and give details within 24 hours of going to the hospital. If you do, the visit is covered. If you don't, you get one of these letters and have to file an appeal, and give them the details. Then they cover it. (*Unless it was "I sneezed a couple times and headed to the ER")

It's Blue Cross/Blue Shield. They are not allowed in some states.

Most of what is wrong with medicine in the U.S. has to do with money. For profit insurance companies, for profit hospitals, and advertising d***s to consumers are by far the worst offenders. Said as a resident of the U.S.

My brother had a stroke at 32. One year in hospital including therapy, years of specialist and hospital visits, procedures for stents you name it, he went through it. Passed 11 years ago at 56. Total bill...$0. Except for medications which were capped at $500 annually, after that free.
