If you grew up watching American movies, you probably have a certain image of the United States—a land where dreams come true, everyone’s chasing success, and patriotism runs deep. But hey, there's so much more to the US than what Hollywood shows us!
Today, we’ve put together a collection of intriguing and surprising things about life in America that might catch you off guard, leave you questioning some stereotypes, or make you realize that life in the U.S. isn’t always as glamorous as it seems in the movies. So, Pandas, let's dive into the real deal! This post may include affiliate links.

A Normal Education In America
This Is America
America is a place full of quirks that can feel completely foreign to outsiders. From the suspiciously big serving sizes to tipping for a cup of coffee to even just how people go about their lives, the experience of being in America can be a real shocker for visitors and new immigrants.
And while some things don’t fully make sense until you’re actually there, these posts give you a fun glimpse into the quirks of American life. They might not prepare you for everything, but they’ll definitely show you a unique side of the States.
The Guy On The Left Has Had A Slew Of Signs Like This
Women voting is what will hopefully save America this election cycle!
Cool
Seriously, USA, what the actual f***k is your mayor malfunction regarding guns?? Are you that afraid of your own government that you prefer psychopaths with high powered rifles than a background check?
Florida Teacher Here. This Is Our School's "Library" Now
Florida passed a law that said no books can be displayed in a school until they've been reviewed and approved by an appointed team. If a teacher shows a book that has not been approved, they could be charged with a felony.
When it comes to food, it seems like bigger is always better for Americans. Whether it’s a pizza or a soda, the portion size is often double what you’d get in other countries. So, what’s considered a large soda in Europe might just be a medium in the States.

"Not Medically Necessary"
Your doctor has had years of education but does not know sh.it .... We have money, we know what's best
It's not the doctors, it's the insurance companies.
Load More Replies...Fight it. Always. Sadly, a lot of times insurance companies do this kind of c**p automatically, then wait to see if you'll put up a fight about it.
Sadly, this is true. All insurance claims are set to be denied the first time around unless they're through a government-funded healthcare program like the Oregon Health Program.
Load More Replies...Thank goodness for the NHS. Not perfect but so much better than the American model. RIP Aneurin Bevan and thank you. So many millions owe their lives to your vision.
Yep, I'm in the UK but my employer also gives private medical insurance. Anytime I've tried to use it I gave to jump through 100' s hoops only for them to get so far and say the rest of the treatment isn't covered. NHS picks up mid treatment and guess what? It's the same consultant as they do both private /NHS. All doctors are NHS trained so private doesn't mean better doctors or care.

A lot of people should be locked up over this - and you know this is far from an isolated case.
Load More Replies...I was admitted to the hospital a couple years ago for a stroke, admitted straight from the ER. Insurance initially denied coverage because I didn't get advance permission for the hospital stay. It's not like I was there for funsies. Also, a doctor's office fought my insurance for over a year to get a treatment the insurance denied as "experimental" despite having been fully approved by the FDA for fourteen years. They pulled shady b******t by sending me completely illegible forms to try and fight my case, but the doctor's office used a third-party service that had pristine copies of the forms to send me whenever insurance pulled that garbage.
Not only is that cruel to you and everyone who cares about you but all of that time and effort just adds exponentially to the cost of healthcare in the first place. The whole thing is obscene. I hope you are all doing well.
Load More Replies...I have a auto immune disease in my lungs, had to go for early ct scans to make sure it was not progressing. Insurance tried to say it was not medically necessary. My Pulmonologist got on a 3 way call with them & demanded you know their expertise because he specializes in my disease. He said I can't believe you are wasting y time on this when I have sick patients. The insurance person just stammered through the conversation & approved the CT scan. It was fantastic but I also wish it never had to be done. Our insurance now denies my husbands epilesy meds that he has been taking for years because they are expensive & they say try something else. Insurance in the US SUX
That's like the idiots that said an idiot at Medicare denied a man I checked in for in for an appt that's in a power chair. He's a paraplegic and only had the use of 1 hand. I asked him what idiot denied his claim because he is clearly disabled. He was hit by a damn drunk driver.
I once had my insurance company refuse to cover a doctor's visit when I broke my arm because it was a "pre-existing condition." Like yes, the condition existed prior to my arriving at the doctor's office, but I figure that's why we go to the doctor's office in general?!?!!?
The skill of the medical coder makes or breaks this situation type in a wrong ICD number, and viola hospital bill no longer cover without a fight
Yea, medical biller for anesthesia here. I have had to do quite a few appeals because the insurance said ANESTHESIA for an appendectomy was not medically necessary. I really wanted to call and talk to utilization review and ask if they would like to get their appendix cut out without anesthesia.
May dogs snap at their heels whenever they go out, may birds cover their cars with guano, may their houses be magnets for disasters, and may their own claims be denied time and again.
Load More Replies...If our current UK Govt get their way, we'll eventually be dealing with this shizz - they're already selling off bits (cherry-picking) of the NHS - that we pay taxes for - to US Healthcare Corps (donors, wink wink).
That is not their final aim, and that's very easy to check. They are using private health care to reduce the waiting lists while dealing with the issues that the feckwitted tories ignored because they felt you should treat the NHS like a business and worry about ROI. That's not how it works. The ultimate aim of the labour party is to remove the private health care aspect when the NHS is working again - as it did very well the last time labour were in power. I'm no massive fan but let's give them a bit longer than a scant few months. It will take ages to undue the damage of 14 years of austerity and corruption.
Load More Replies...I got one of those after being in the hospital with pneumonia. ER doctor said he couldn't send me home on oxygen, so I stayed long enough to be able to breathe without it and got out as quickly as I could, and the insurance company didn't care that the pulmonologist saw the X-ray and wanted to go in and clear out my lungs manually, they still said it wasn't necessary...
cancel insurance. Put any money you would have given them into a piggy bank. Break that puggy when needed
And when the boy gets an urgent surgery because of appendicitis turning into peritonitis, what will insurance argue?
My son had the same sort of reply for his insulin, which was rejected. When he called the insurance company, he was shuffled from one person to another who told him his request had also been reviewed by medical personnel and found unnecessary. He finally began simply asking are you the medical professional who decides if people should just die? NO? Then transfer me to that person. He finally got the decision reversed and was allowed to have his insulin.
Insurance companies are the majority of the problem with American healthcare.
I got a letter like this and panicked. I took it to my doctor and he said "just wait. Insurance is a funny thing and takes time but It will go through. If you get another one in a month or 2 then we will work with you" I didn't get another letter.
Over and over again I thank my lucky star I was born in Sweden, with next to free health care, and not America!
I am European and grew up with American culture. So I embraced and loved it. But I'm now close to the point of hating the US just like I hate Russia!
This denial is from anthem Blue Cross. See logo and titling an upper right. If you have anthem Blue Cross get a different insurance company.

I had a tear in my right hip. My doctor wanted a MRI done to see if it had gotten worse. They denied the MRI, wanting me to do PT instead. With a tear in my hip. Instead of my doctor filing a grievance (I think that's what it's called), I filed it instead. It got approved. According to the doctor's office, it's actually easier if the patient requests it, as they're less likely to argue with the patient.
many of hte doctor they get to do these reviews are docs that have been barred from practicing or had sever limits placed on their practices
My insurance did this to me for my teenager’s wisdom tooth. Only one tooth, not asking for prophylactic extraction. And it was coming in sideways. He spent months in pain as I fought with insurance. They claimed it wasn’t medically necessary because (a) it wasn’t abscessed or (b) it hadn’t impacted the neighboring tooth. So they would rather pay significantly more for work after he spent more time in pain, than approve removal at the needed time. I changed insurance companies during the next open enrollment.
Coprtate death squads determining whether you live or die. So much better than the government making that decision.
They pulled that on me for something once. You know what I did, I told them that I was going to sue them for every single seizure that I had and believe me I would have been set up for life. All of the sudden they changed their tune and called me back and approved my medicine.
Most insurance companies want you to call and give details within 24 hours of going to the hospital. If you do, the visit is covered. If you don't, you get one of these letters and have to file an appeal, and give them the details. Then they cover it. (*Unless it was "I sneezed a couple times and headed to the ER")
It's not the procedure, it's the level of care. Your hospital tried to bill as inpatient when it's appropriate for observation level of care (48 hr monitoring in the hospital). Unfortunately, the denial letter doesn't spell this out clearly. The hospital will likely change the level of care and that will resolve your problem.
United States Of Convenience
Apart from their supersized food, Americans have a reputation of being fans of sugared beverages as well. If you are planning on visiting the US, prepare for a lot of flavored sodas and sweet iced teas.
Compared to countries like Italy, where people sip on small, strong espressos, or Japan, where green tea is the norm, US drinks are super sweet and come in sizes that could last all day.

On top of this, they have truly become successful at being able to do things quickly, especially when it comes to food. There are many fast food places in the States that come with drive-thru features. But that’s not simply it.
There are even drive-thru pharmacies, banks, and coffee shops. In other countries like Spain, people usually enjoy sit-down meals with friends and family. To these people, the concept of taking a cup of coffee through the window is quite alien.

While tipping is a common practice in many countries, it is practically a requirement in the States. And no, you can't skimp on tips—15-20% is the expected norm at restaurants.
On the contrary, in countries like Japan, there is an actual cultural principle not to tip anyone, and a good number of European nations include the gratuity within the bill itself.
The Bill For My Liver Transplant – Welcome To The USA
Not Sure If This Belongs Here But In My Opinion, This Is The Real Problem With America
America In 4 Words
Medical bills in the US can be shockingly high compared to countries with universal healthcare, like Canada or the UK. In those places, most people do not have to pay for doctor’s visits, surgeries and staying in the hospital, because this is financed by the state. Here, on the other hand, a simple visit to an emergency department could lead to a bill that runs into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

When it comes to holidays, Americans don’t get much vacation time. With an average of just two weeks of paid vacation, they might feel rushed to squeeze in their trips. Compare that to countries like France or Germany, where five to six weeks of paid holiday is the norm. So it is no surprise that Europeans are said to go globetrotting more often.
Just Got My $39k Hospital Bill For Having A Stroke At 34
My brother had a stroke at 32. One year in hospital including therapy, years of specialist and hospital visits, procedures for stents you name it, he went through it. Passed 11 years ago at 56. Total bill...$0. Except for medications which were capped at $500 annually, after that free.

Drove To An Urgent Care To Have My Throat Looked At, Got To An Exam Room, And Learned They Were Only Doing Telehealth Visits When They Wheeled This In
Not to one-up..but went to an urgent care that I had visited before for a Upper Resp infection. Got a bill for the whole amount, when my BC/BS should have paid 80%. Upon investigation it was reclassified by the conglomerate as a Ready Care, or, an offsite ER. Oh...the hospital ER is 4 blocks away. I refused to pay any more than my 20% co-pay due to their "subterfuge". They threatened credit reporting after a few months. Called my (GOP) Rep. and explained the situation. I sent them 20% right after my call to my Rep. Got an e-mail from McClaren telling me it was paid in full.

They were both the same price so it only made sense. Didn't realize until I got home. Thought it was fine cause I had to get tums, to find the same thing… And find another associate. American Airlines Changed A Friend's Flight To Spain. The Change Added A 7-Hour Layover In Chicago And Removed Almost $100 From The Value Of The Trip. No Refund Or Voucher Was Issued To Her
Doesn't surprise me airlines would do this, regardless of country. My brother and his partner recently had flights from Noosa to Melbourne delayed and then cancelled due to weather (both on the way there and back). They had to stay in a hotel overnight when the last was cancelled and the next flight didn't leave until the day after. The only compensation from the airline was a $25 voucher to a local restaurant where that amount wouldn't even cover the full cost of the cheapest meal.
