If you grew up watching American movies, you probably have a certain image of the United States—a land where dreams come true, everyone’s chasing success, and patriotism runs deep. But hey, there's so much more to the US than what Hollywood shows us!
Today, we’ve put together a collection of intriguing and surprising things about life in America that might catch you off guard, leave you questioning some stereotypes, or make you realize that life in the U.S. isn’t always as glamorous as it seems in the movies. So, Pandas, let's dive into the real deal! This post may include affiliate links.

A Normal Education In America
This Is America
America is a place full of quirks that can feel completely foreign to outsiders. From the suspiciously big serving sizes to tipping for a cup of coffee to even just how people go about their lives, the experience of being in America can be a real shocker for visitors and new immigrants.
And while some things don’t fully make sense until you’re actually there, these posts give you a fun glimpse into the quirks of American life. They might not prepare you for everything, but they’ll definitely show you a unique side of the States.

Seriously, USA, what the actual f***k is your mayor malfunction regarding guns?? Are you that afraid of your own government that you prefer psychopaths with high powered rifles than a background check?
Florida Teacher Here. This Is Our School's "Library" Now
Florida passed a law that said no books can be displayed in a school until they've been reviewed and approved by an appointed team. If a teacher shows a book that has not been approved, they could be charged with a felony.
When it comes to food, it seems like bigger is always better for Americans. Whether it’s a pizza or a soda, the portion size is often double what you’d get in other countries. So, what’s considered a large soda in Europe might just be a medium in the States.

"Not Medically Necessary"
United States Of Convenience
Apart from their supersized food, Americans have a reputation of being fans of sugared beverages as well. If you are planning on visiting the US, prepare for a lot of flavored sodas and sweet iced teas.
Compared to countries like Italy, where people sip on small, strong espressos, or Japan, where green tea is the norm, US drinks are super sweet and come in sizes that could last all day.

On top of this, they have truly become successful at being able to do things quickly, especially when it comes to food. There are many fast food places in the States that come with drive-thru features. But that’s not simply it.
There are even drive-thru pharmacies, banks, and coffee shops. In other countries like Spain, people usually enjoy sit-down meals with friends and family. To these people, the concept of taking a cup of coffee through the window is quite alien.

While tipping is a common practice in many countries, it is practically a requirement in the States. And no, you can't skimp on tips—15-20% is the expected norm at restaurants.
On the contrary, in countries like Japan, there is an actual cultural principle not to tip anyone, and a good number of European nations include the gratuity within the bill itself.
The Bill For My Liver Transplant – Welcome To The USA
Not Sure If This Belongs Here But In My Opinion, This Is The Real Problem With America
America In 4 Words
Medical bills in the US can be shockingly high compared to countries with universal healthcare, like Canada or the UK. In those places, most people do not have to pay for doctor’s visits, surgeries and staying in the hospital, because this is financed by the state. Here, on the other hand, a simple visit to an emergency department could lead to a bill that runs into hundreds of thousands of dollars.
On Hold With Covered California For Over 11 Hours Because They Canceled Our Health Insurance
Most of what is wrong with medicine in the U.S. has to do with money. For profit insurance companies, for profit hospitals, and advertising d***s to consumers are by far the worst offenders. Said as a resident of the U.S.

When it comes to holidays, Americans don’t get much vacation time. With an average of just two weeks of paid vacation, they might feel rushed to squeeze in their trips. Compare that to countries like France or Germany, where five to six weeks of paid holiday is the norm. So it is no surprise that Europeans are said to go globetrotting more often.
Just Got My $39k Hospital Bill For Having A Stroke At 34
My brother had a stroke at 32. One year in hospital including therapy, years of specialist and hospital visits, procedures for stents you name it, he went through it. Passed 11 years ago at 56. Total bill...$0. Except for medications which were capped at $500 annually, after that free.

Does Anyone Else Hate That We’ve Normalized Not Putting Back Your Cart? I Just Find It Lazy (In The US)
When living in the US, it is usually hard to get around without a car unless you are located in a major city like New York or Chicago. On the other hand, when people go to places like India, Bangladesh or other Asian countries, they find and enjoy superb public transportation facilities such as railroads, buses and three-wheeler vehicles.

I Was Forced To Throw Away Bags Of Bread While At Work. There Is A Homeless Shelter Two Miles From Where I Work. All Of This Food Wasted
It's not always the company's fault. Years ago I worked for a baseball stadium. We used to donate all food leftover after games to a local shelter. Then someone took the food to go and ate it like a week later and sued the stadium food provider for food poisoning and won. So they quit donating food.
Load More Replies...It is, but the litigation culture that prevents American businesses from donating food isn't prevalent elsewhere.
Load More Replies...Yep. Many supermarkets eg Tesco, Co-op and places like Pret in the UK ensure food goes to help feed people in need as part of Community Food Connection Scheme.
Load More Replies...To be clear, if food is donated in good faith, recipients cannot sue if they get sick/have allergic reactions/etc. Regardless, all across the US and Canada, good food like this is thrown out because uninformed people say "We can't give it away for legal reasons." Yes, you can give it away, yes you can help. You're just choosing not to.
But, also to be fair, a lot of people don't know they can't be sued. Just look at all the comments on this post saying you can be. Here's the U.S. law proving you can't: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/FAQs-GoodSamaritanAct.pdf Let's all spread the word.
Load More Replies...Before the pandemic, Pennsylvania was going to start a food recovery program between the resorts and food pantries. They had several million allocated for trucks and freezers. Not sure what happened to the program since.
Call your stare senator and representative and find out. Then tell then it's time to get back on it.
Load More Replies...Anyone who says it's a liability doesnt know the law. The US has a Good Samaritan law that protects individuals and businesses. It provides immunity from prosecution should someone get sick...any company, store or individual who says they throw away food rather than donate it because they don't want to be sued are lying. Period.
Yes! Here's more about the law: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/FAQs-GoodSamaritanAct.pdf Please spread the word!
Load More Replies...That's ridiculous, there's a food pantry in town and the grocery stores like Food Lion literally right down the road from it donates bread, cakes, pastries, etc that's getting ready to expire. The bread store that I go to gives expired bread to pig farmers or they did several years ago. Gonna try to remember to ask when I go this week. I thought it was terrible because the homeless shelters could have used it. I know that the color of the tie on the bag is for each day of the week.
I am guessing they are doing it due to taxes. Around 15-20y ago there as something like this in PL. Somebody wanted to show how cool some bakery is by showing in the Internet they are giving unsold bread to homeless. Tax agency showed up, give GIANT fee for not putting this in income and I am not sure but I think it almost put owner in prison.
What income? This would be expenditure not income - and rich people etc give to charity as a tax write-off all the time. This doesn't make sense.
Load More Replies...When I worked for Tim Hortons, my boss actually had a any leftover bread products (donuts and bagels, sometimes muffins) given to our local homeless shelter. The shelter actually had a van that would come around in the early morning to collect it from all the local businesses that participated.
I know their food is trash, but Panera Bread (at least years ago when I worked there) donated all of their leftover food to people in need at the end of every work day.
I will say at least my company donates SOME stuff, but I throw away on the daily cause of my Dept. (dairy) That's a lawsuit no one wants.
Your company cannot be sued if they donate in good faith. It is likely just an expense and a hassle they don't want to bother with so they spread this lie. https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/FAQs-GoodSamaritanAct.pdf Please talk to your coworkers and employers so everyone knows what the law is and maybe you can start donating that dairy.
Load More Replies...When my daughter was in high school a bunch of kids had part time jobs involving food. They started taking all the day olds that would have been tossed and making sandwichs that they would distribute to the street people in the park near their school on their lunch break. Their teachers liked the fact that they had organized this themselves and decided to give them all credit for community service. Many times companies would do the right thing if they have someone who is willing to physically take responsibility for doing it.
Thanks to the Nanny State, unused food can't be given away. Litigation don't ya know.
Not true. Please spread the word: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/FAQs-GoodSamaritanAct.pdf
Load More Replies...In my country (EU country) stores after working hours (especially before they close for weekend or holidays) prepare all leftover food - that can't wait few days (baked goods, dairy products before expiration, sliced salami or cheese) and they have special companies pick the food up and give it to people that can not afford to buy them.
It has to do more with government regulations, and what they are allowed to donate, rather than if the company wants to donate, a lot of the time. The laws vary state to state. For instance, in South Carolina, pretty much anything goes, even already cooked pizzas can be donated. Idaho, takes pre-made sandwiches and salads from gas stations. Massachusetts, can't take either of those, but can take bakery items. When I worked at a 7-Eleven, in Mass, the owner would let us take home the sandwiches, and put the extras in a strategically placed bag for the hungry. Some jerk ratted him out, and he had to pay huge fines.
Not true. Federal law passed in 1996 applies to all states: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/FAQs-GoodSamaritanAct.pdf
Load More Replies...Any convenience store that sells perishables does this daily. 7-11 throws away literal garbage cans full of bagels, donuts, etc daily. The excuse? Liability. Fuqn BS.
7-11 has lawyers and they know better. Federal law protects them from liability. The individual store owner is either ignorant or just can't be bothered. Here's some info on the law: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/FAQs-GoodSamaritanAct.pdf
Load More Replies...I worked at a large chain and for YEARS we donated to a homeless shelter. A homeless person ate food from the shelter, got sick and sued the shelter and then the shelter sued us. It was complete b******t, but because of that it turned into "No Donation" policy and anyone caught violating it would be fired.
Okay but that was at least 27 years ago. If they're not donating now, it's 100% by choice.
Load More Replies...I’d put the phone number to the shelter on speed dial. “Free bread at 8:30 tonight”
There are NO U.S. states where businesses are forbidden from donating food. And federal law protects them lawsuits: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/FAQs-GoodSamaritanAct.pdf
Load More Replies...Companies do this in the US because it's a bigger tax write off to just throw it away, or they're afraid of getting sued if someone gets sick from eating the food. But other countries do this all the time, don't they? So it's doable.
U.S. companies CANNOT be sued for donating food in good faith. https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/FAQs-GoodSamaritanAct.pdf Please spread. The more people understand this, the more pressure we can put on businesses to actually do it.
Load More Replies...There's liability laws that stores have to follow that do not allow or explicitly FORBID donating any goods.
In the US there is a "Good Samaritan law" that protects those who donate food from liability, if they donated the food in good faith.
Load More Replies...Same. We have students and elderly people where I work. There is a network of little old ladies sneaking food home so they can have something to eat since the wages aren't that great. Work hard and retire they said. Ha!
Getting fired isn't going to help in the long run.
Load More Replies...Not going to lie I used to "steal" the stuff getting thrown away. I could of gotten fired but us waitress get underpaid. It is not a joke they would throw it away instead of letting staff eat it or take it home. Yes I have stolen, but I found it more immoral to throw I away
Load More Replies...Every once in a while I see these types of posts and it bothers me because there are real reasons not to give away food. Giving away food opens your company up to lawsuits by anyone claiming to be sick from the food you give away. You also create a culture of theft by people knowing they can have what isn't sold, so they make more purposely. And you could end up with people--people who statistically already have some form of mental illnesses- getting angry if you aren't able to give them anything that day. We had a homeless guy come around every night to take any extra muffins or bagels we had and one day it just turned out we sold everything and he got super violent and broke our window. So I get it. But this is a waste problem. You need to control your waste a lot better if you're throwing away this much food. You have to be okay with maybe not making a sale because you ran out. It's a waste of product and labor.
No person or entity in the U. S. can be sued for donating food in good faith. Here's some info on the federal law: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/FAQs-GoodSamaritanAct.pdf

Doesn't surprise me airlines would do this, regardless of country.
