With so much consumerism everywhere, it’s easy to get lost in the sea of plastic, spontaneous purchases that don’t last long.

Not only do they pollute our world (and our homes!), they give us little if any extra value. They don’t have any memories attached to them. They don’t keep any stories to tell about them.

Unlike antiques. These beautiful pieces of art, furniture, kitchenware, you name it, have been touched by history in ways that no modern thing will ever be. And if you, like me, are a fan of antiques, we’ve got a real treat for you!

Welcome to the Reddit community known as “Antiques” that is home to a buzzing community of, like people say, “old stuff” lovers. Created in 2009, the group has proven to be as relevant as ever, sharing some of the most beautiful and most interesting examples. Scroll down for our selection of the best ones shared here and be sure to check out part 1 right here.

To find out what an expert has to say about antiques and their value, as well as which objects are now most sought after by professional collectors, Bored Panda reached out to Dr. Lori Verderame, a Ph.D. antiques appraiser who’s an internationally syndicated columnist and an author with 30 books to her credit.

Dr. Verderame specializes in helping people make money with buying and selling tips, as well as showing them how to spot valuables at thrift stores, charity shops, flea markets, estate sales, etc. and flip them for profit. She also runs a widely popular YouTube channel with almost 200k subscribers where she shares various tips about antiques.

Having written many books and articles on the topic of valuing art and antiques, Dr. Verderame was happy to share what’s currently buzzing in the antique market. “Antiques increase in value over time and typically the most valuable categories of antiques include fine art (paintings, sculpture), furniture, fine jewelry, and historical objects,” Dr. Verderame said. She added that right now, it is a good time to buy fine art since now it is a buyers' market.

Meanwhile, collectors collect all types of art and antiques. “Some of the hottest collectibles now are 1980s toys, vintage clothing and accessories from the 1960s and 1970s, Art Deco sculpture and lamps, and costume jewelry, and color glass like Murano and Blenko pieces,” Dr. Verderame explained.

Medievalist here (PhD), take those to a antiques (jewelry specialist) person immediately because those are an amazing find! Judging from the picture and the settings and filigree you are looking at two pieces from the ~very~ early Middle Ages (c. 6th century) or even from the end ofthe Roman Empire. This is literally, literally buried treasure. So cool!!!!

In our previous interview with Dr. Verderame we found out that an antique is an object that is 100 years old or older. "I determine antique status by looking at materials, condition, and design. I appraise an antique's value by comparing it with other similar items and using my decades of museum and appraisal experience to provide a value,” she said.

Moreover, Dr. Verderame bases her values on actual sales records where similar items have sold recently. “I use my love of antiques to appraise value and value differs based on the type of object appraised. Many factors determine value depending on the type of object presented." The most valuable categories of antiques typically include fine art, antique furniture, and antique and vintage fine and costume jewelry.

More and more people are getting interested in antiques, Dr. Verderame said, especially young adults. "Because we can buy all types of antiques with ease now online, people are enjoying the thrill of the treasure hunt for antiques as well as the excitement of selling them or keeping them.”

“I show many examples of how I find the money for people on my YouTube channel series called Real Bargains. Young adults—my fans—are interested in antiques and vintage items because they are well-made, unique and interesting, and are conversation pieces,” Dr. Verderame commented.

“Many realize that they can buy a vintage or antique object for very little money and use my tips to flip for profit or keep it for their own collection and enjoyment. Many people are interested in antiques because of the memories they spark or for the connection to a bygone era," she explained in our previous interview.

Google says: The United States no longer issues bills in larger denominations, such as $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 bills. But they are still legal tender and may still be in circulation. All U.S. currency issued since 1861 is valid and redeemable at its full face value. Jul 13, 2022 -- but I don't think I could part with that!

It wasn't propaganda, people had pig clubs where a people would club together to buy the piglet and feed it from all their scraps. When the pig reached a certain size and was slaughtered half went to the government and the other half was split between the people who had fed it. Britain very nearly starved during WWIi thanks to the U-boats blowing up so many merchant navy ships.

This is a telephone gossip bench. Definitely appears to be antique but hard to say from a picture. They haven’t really been popular reproductions so my guess is it is very likely antique. They were made so the telephone could sit on the desk part with storage for telephone/personal address books, message pads, pens etc. or it could sit near a wall mounted phone. The upholstery looks like it’s in great shape so you might want to consider having it appraised before reupholstering- if it is well cared for original upholstery that you could lower the value.

In the UK all 'gold' finds have to be reported to 'the portable antiquities scheme', a govt dept, acessed via the coroner, believe it or not. They will date it, and tell you whether you can keep it (or sell) or whether you must donate it to a museum usually for a set sum.

The languiage is probably Old Church Slavonic or some variation. The actual alphabet visible on the pages is Glagolic - the precursor to the Cyrillic script, which many Slavic languages use nowadays.

Mercurochrome, generically known as merbromin, is a topical antiseptic used to treat minor cuts and scrapes. When applied to a wound, the dark red color of the ointment stains the skin. It had been widely used as a household antiseptic/antibacterial ointment - especially for children - because it did not sting or irritate the skin when applied; however, it is no longer sold in the U.S., partly because of its mercury content.

Sure it’s not a more recent military academy cadet’s uniform? Check the stitching. If it looks like machine stitching, it’s most likely way more recent than the 1860s. Also remember, Civil War uniforms took a lot of abuse in battle, so would only be in good shape like this one if they weren’t worn long. Or at all.

Since 200 years would date it to the 1820s, about 35 +/- years after the end of the Revolutionary War (ended 1784) and 5 +/- years after the end of the War of 1812 (ended 1815), so is it a book about the American Revolution? Because that would make an incredibly interesting read, as the war itself would still be quite fresh in almost everyone’s’ memories.
