For small businesses these days, it’s all about customer reviews. It doesn't matter how slick of a marketing campaign you have or how much you invest in advertising and hosting grand events; it can all come hideously undone with a couple of unhappy customers who decide to tell the world about it.
However, it needn’t be the end of the world. Sometimes, if the negative feedback is genuine, a humble apology and promise to fix the issue can show honesty and willingness to listen, which many potential customers can appreciate.
Alternatively, if the complaint is malicious and false, a witty comeback and a withering response can also win fans. You might even go viral and get a ton of free exposure!

Jeremy is a scam artist and his kids will be the next generation of scam artists. oh joy.
Guessing math isn't your best subject? It was 30 min and to be honest, being a huge fan of seafood, I would want it to take more than 5 minutes for my mussels to arrive. Did you not read where in the reply they stated it was BUSY?!?!? That means a little bit longer wait. I would have no problem with this at all!!
Load More Replies...While it wasn't 60 minutes having to wait 39 minutes for mussels and French fries isn't great
when you are hungry, sitting at an empty table seems longer than it is.
Load More Replies...Jeremy missed out on the early option vasectomy this planet desperately needs.
38 minutes is still far too long for an appetizer, especially at lunch.
Ordered at 14:19 and appetizers arrive at 14:58, 39 minutes later. The lies are terrible, these is a terrible person who wrote the review, but 39 minutes to get appetizers is too long.
Do Restaurants Care About Reviews?
“You don’t define your brand. Your customers do,” is a common saying among customer service experts. And it’s true. Customer reviews have become so important to people that 90% of consumers read online reviews before visiting a business, as per Invesp. And 88% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. That’s a lot! So restaurants don’t just care about the reviews; they need them.
People are malicious. Could be a competitor or someone paid by a competitor.
Load More Replies...Other restaurants near by have been known to pull this on new restaurants. Looks like they may have jumped the gun on this one.
Competition. There have been numerous complaints on Yelp and similar sites saying that competitors will post negative reviews or pay others to do so. Its a really grimy thing to do...but that is business.
Load More Replies...Because as the clapback says, they have nothing better to do. Sadly, some people can only pleasure out of insulting or belittling others.
Load More Replies...Why would they wish this person upon an innocent cat? Leave kitties out of this lol
I am glad that owners are writing comments back. this is an important tool.
No, someone like her should NOT get a cat or any other being that will depend on her in any way.
How Much Does a Bad Review Cost a Restaurant?
You need visible reviews for potential customers to check out, but they must be good ones. If you get a bad review, it can be soul-destroying; you pour your heart and soul into your business only to tarnish it by a customer who might simply be in a bad mood, didn’t like the restaurant’s food, or had unrealistic expectations.
Businesses are at risk of losing consumers who would have bought from them if there hadn’t been a negative review, as per Zen Business. Negative reviews can turn as much as 86% of customers away. You simply can't ignore difficult customers, no matter how unfair it might seem.
Also, they left, their table was given away, but the service was good.
They said their table was given away, not that they left. Very likely they are mad because they had to wait to be seated. Empty tables do not mean they are free for customers to use. They can be reserved, or just not enough servers available. Hence the wait. But... if lobster isn't served....
If you're running a little* late, but still expect your table to be ready for you, might you just give them al call, now that most of us carry a cell phone everywhere we go? *-and who knows what he means by 'a little late'
A perfect example of a paid negative Yelp review. Probably gave another similar restaurant a positive review.
Must have brought a takeaway lobster and sat on somebody's knee !!
That last post about women was over a year before he posted his review....But THE POINT IS what does all that have to do with his complaint? Either it’s true or it isn’t. Instead of just denying it though and assuring the public his restaurant doesn’t operate that way, he resorts to a b****y and unprofessional attack.
Either he's a major cheater, or just a liar. Either way he's a douchebag.
That's actually a lame answer from them, imo. It has nothing to do with the complaint.
Anniversary's are usually yearly, so it could go either way, but regardless I don't think the restaurant should have provided in the same accusatory tone as the reviewer.
Why Do Customers Leave Bad Restaurant Reviews?
According to Social Media Today, 13.5% of customers say they post fake reviews or negative reviews out of vengeance, so chances are, they aren’t out to get you personally. 89.7% of people who complain want to get a response from you, which suggests that they are giving you the opportunity to make things right.
73.2% of people who complain hope to save others from having the same experience as they did. So, if you are helpful and make an effort to reply in a courteous way, you can use bad reviews for restaurants to show that you are willing to adapt to customer needs and demands.
Because they think being legal and making sense makes sense, unlike you, Blurred Name.
I was a bartender for a long time. Luckily the internet didn’t have places for fools like this. I (and everyone else) always had customers lying about us. I almost got suspended because someone called the main office and said I flipped him off and wouldn’t serve him. I had a bandaged middle finger from a work related accident and walked around with my hand elevated as much as possible. Everyone who worked with me and the regulars luckily had my back because they were the ones joking that I was flipping them off. We just assumed it was a guy I turned down. That happens to men and women a lot in the service business.
I definitely wouldn't recommend AA to deal with actual problems. They have a convoluted, religious process where they try to convince you to have God solve your problems. Seriously, look up their 12 steps, it's bizarre that people don't call them out on it more often. I'd recommend a secular alternative like SMART Recovery.
So why didn't the owner remove her from the premises? If she was so intoxicated it would have been no effort at all to throw her out.
It is not against the law to have a drunk in the restaurant, it IS against the law to serve more alcohol to someone who is obviously intoxicated to the point that they cant even balance on their own. As long as she was not disrespectful or belligerent, there really was no reason to "throw her out"...there WAS a very good reason, however, to not serve her any more drinks.
Load More Replies...Highly illegal to see to a seriously intoxicated person. Huge fines - possible loss of license. Good job.
Its a shame that AA is the only help available to many addicts. It has its good points, but then again, it is basically a cult, which seeks to disempower people, and get you addicted to 'the rooms.'
You would think that businesses near each other would want to give each other positive reviews to bring more business in to the area.
Yeah, and most cities, towns and neighborhoods have business associations where business all know eachother.

During an interview with CNBC, Attorney Evan Mascagni said, “Most Americans don’t realize they can be sued for writing an online review. With the rise of user-generated [review] content sites like Yelp, TripAdvisor, Google, we’ve really seen a shift where folks are being sued for their speech online.”
As you saw in these bad restaurant review examples, it was apparent that the reviews were false. Our advice would be to avoid writing such fake reviews, or you might face a heavy fine from the restaurant.
no, friend, a person is trying to get free stuff.

If they didn't like it that much the first time why did they go again.
I really LOVE this short, smart, on fleek, professional answer. In one word: BUUUUUUUUUURN!!!!!
Honestly...the whole "let's stop serving breakfast hours before lunch" thing is a legitimate thing to be angry about...I mean...only on the grounds that 10 am and even 11 am is still morning and lunch is supposed to be a thing that starts around 12 pm. I've always been so irritated with people that stop serving breakfast at 10 am..like...what the actual f**k? Even 11 am breakfast should still be going. I'd have been pissed too but I wouldn't have acted like I wasn't rude in my review.
Right... I mean I usually assume places stop at 10:30 and def would never write a bad review if I was wrong considering that's MY mistake but the owner didn't need to be so aggressive either geeze haha
Load More Replies...I'm confused. The review was written in April but the response was written in October?!
Bravo to the Owner. Someone with balls to stand up to entitles a*s wipes!!

I have all the respect for the restaurants that do not allow children running around the tables. Running children are very annoying for the other customers and it is also very dangerous because a children can injure themselves very easily.
Not to mention the chance of bumping into servers, carrying trays with hot dishes or hot drinks.
Load More Replies..."The restaurant was empty on a busy Friday night." Well, which was it, empty or busy?
I wish more places would stop parents from letting their kids run around. I did not pay to go out to eat and deal with your children because you feel the need NOT to deal with them. Do what I did while my children were growing up, visit mcdonalds
Moms like this disgust me. They think the world revolves around them and their kids and the rest of the world just should deal with it.
as a worker in a resurant small children running around while servers are walking around with piping hot food is just not okay exspecially when the parents are allowing it , i understand if you are having a bad day and are just trying you best but i had a coupe who came in constantly and actually encourage their children to go and ''play'' i had an accident where one almost gout hot soup all over them becuase the parents didnt care
Your restaurant has a responsibility to put a stop to that. Sorry you have to work in such conditions. Surprised that business isn't slowing down due to people deciding to eat elsewhere.
Load More Replies...Entitled parents hit the headlines on BoredPanda! They have taken over social media headlines!
Our kids knew how to sit at a table properly from ages 4 and 2 when they sat in on their first business dinner. When my husband was sent away for work we would some times be able to go with him. We taught them that they needed to be polite and to be considerate of others. Yes I did say at ages 2and 4!,
Same here - children can absolutely be taught how to behave in public at very young ages. It just requires the parents to plan ahead and pay attention to their kids.

Clients and patrons always ask "Do you mind? Is it okay?" and the natural inclination is to answer "sure." But once in a while the patron will take advantage of this kindness for all it's worth and you want to back out of being kind. Then you either roll with it, feel taken advantage of, or become the a*****e. It's a tough call.
eh...sounds like the restaurant was in the wrong here. 3 hours isn't terribly long and they probably should have ordered more...hell, I'd have been annoyed but I wouldn't have asked them to leave unless it was busy. I don't know, this is a tough one. I think they're just both being d***s maybe...
I think the same.. If it wasnt busy 3 hours and 2 drinks to stay on the laptop is ok. And its not like the laptop was actually greatly affecting the bill
Load More Replies...Nop, they are defending their brand amd ghey name, and what they do with proud, and what feed their families, not like fake reviewrs just to get a free lunch of coffee
Load More Replies...So they left a bad review because they got fired smh. To be fair the stuff he said is probably true lol
Sure he was probably pissed about being fired, but that doesn't mean anything he said was false. If I ever got fired I'd have a laundry list of truthful things to tell the public. I think they have a right to know, I'd like to tell them now, but I don't feel like getting fired just yet.
Guy complaining about tandoori dyed red in a country where red food dye is in their cheese and bleach is in their bread...
The owner should have taken that guy to court for slander and deformation.
Lol! Deformation!! I think you mean defamation. Deformation sounds funnier though:)
Load More Replies...I like how frank the restaurant was. They didn't even put too much into their response, they just simply said, "You were fired recently because you suck."
That doesn't mean the restaurant doesn't suck too. The reviewer might be a jerk, but he also might be telling the truth...
Load More Replies...If the ex-waiter would love his job, he would leave the list of "things that could be improved" on the table so that both parts of the FINE story could come out. It's an Algarve problem, sunglasses disappear, children disappear... and others are always to be blamed when simply "we" lose them because we are too drunk and too distracted having fun with friends...
OMG if you are gong to agree to eat outside you have to deal with the "animals" that live outside. So, if I leave a personal item supposedly at the restaurant, they have to pay for it.
Brits do it every time, false complains for money, in Algarve and all over Portugal and Spain.
I doubt it. I do think theres perhaps a negative perception of natives in these regions which I'm supposing concerns crime and this has extended to immediate suspicion, in this case, of hospitality workers, when something goes missing/wrong.
Load More Replies...I..have so many questions. Can someone please explain to someone not fluent in cakeshop vocab what happened here? Where do you get to take cupcakes off walls? What is a wall case? What is meant by topper (the frosting?)? I now have the mental image of someone licking frosting off a cupcake only to stick the remains to a wall, that cannot be the case, right?
I am also very confused by this as I have never seen cupcakes on a wall where the customers can access them. Unless already packaged, cakes are usually behind a counter manned by someone, in my experience. I figured that the topper was something on top of it, maybe icing, maybe something like a cake topper (but that usually wouldn't be licked...) but I've never heard this terminology before.
Load More Replies...I'm so very confused. What is a topper? How do they have cupcakes on the wall?
That's just disturbing. I would have been condescending if I had seen that kind of behavior.
Yeah. Totally perplexed here. I am picturing a topper like numbers for a birthday or something...did someone just lick that and stick it on the wall??
If you come into a restaurant when they're closing you shouldn't expect suburb service. You're actually a d!ck for deciding to come in when they're trying to end their day because you feel entitled to food. Mcdonalds is open 24 hours.
Is Suburb service only available in the suburbs or can I get it in the city too?
Load More Replies...Her photo looks like shes the type to speak to the manager every place she goes.
Hopefully the owner learned his most valuable lesson: Bending over backwards to please customers is never left unpunished.
So they were mad that the food they chose to order came to 45 dollars and apparently it was the restaurant's fault that their kid wasted their food?
I've worked in restaurants. I hate it when people come in right before closing and complain when things take a while. Cooks don't prep more food right before they close! The kitchen staff has already put stuff away and they have to get everything out again just to make your dish. They might have already started cleaning the grill/stove when you decided to waltz in there 10 minutes before closing. Everyone is cleaning up and getting ready to leave and then you show up. They are tired and they want to go home, so they hate you for making them stay late. Duh!
Good explanation! When I've been somewhere that's really close to closing - i've ASKED if it's ok - and have been told what is available. If you are decent to your servors- they will be to you,. And I've ALWAYS eaten reasonably quickly and left a large tip, I've been on wait-staff - I know how it is.
if I was the management, I would have taken the compliment and ran with it! Why admit that it isn't your restaurant lol
Jesus Christ, Karen! You ate at my house, you didn't have to review that.. or pay for it, buy I'm not complaining about the paying part..
And if the reviewer was a man?.... why do people make jokes about women in this way and why is the name ALWAYS “Karen”? I’ve never understood this.
Load More Replies...I'm sorry...30 of the funniest restaurant comebacks to negative reviews? Umm....how is a 4 star review that complimented the ambience and staff and how much they loved the dish a negative review? The only "negative" thing they said here was that the dishes are a little costly but then went on to say they are worth ordering. This isn't a negative review...it's probably a review for the wrong place. To put my objection more clearly; this is SUPPOSED to be a list of negative reviews. That doesn't really belong on this list as per the Title of the list.
Guys. Search youtube for Wiggle Wine on Britain's (or America's) got talent
That's what I was thinking of when I saw the name of the place.
Load More Replies...But why would they do that. The only thing remotely 'negative' was "Dishes are a little costly..." Some people just have too much time on their hands (like me, right now lol)
No sorry but insisting a customer take a medium instead of a small to accommodate a deal is bad business
I'm confused on this one. The restaurant is saying that they wouldn't substitute the gluten free small because he was asking for a small instead of a medium, that the deal offers? How is it rational for a business to remove the deal because the guy is asking for something cheaper while still paying the full deal price? They just seem like morons.
Because most food deals don't allow for substitutions, period.
Load More Replies...This could really backfire for the other Chinese restaurant. People remember this kind of funny publicity better than a good review.
The word choice and grammar reveal that this is not a native English speaker, and the syntax used does indicate a Chinese dialect.

Are we not gonna talk about how they said "VERY cheap" then "OVERPRICED" in the same review?
I mean, you can be in business for a long time and be crooks. It doesn't sound like the case here, but there are definitely long cons.
The owner/manager sounds like a jerk. The review may have been wrong, but to result in name calling just shows the lack of maturity on the owners part. I wouldn't want to eat here either.
If you're gonna make up a bad review, at least make it believable. Nobody would believe you waited 5 hours at a pub and didn't leave!
why did the owner had to mention his google name of all things and profanity is not the best way to end this conversation.
You think you know your cheeses with I'm going to outcheese you cheesy lady!
Some of these review responders are excellent writers. I think they missed their calling lol
A buratta isn't a cheese is it, it's made from mozzarella on outside, some other cheese and cream on inside.... I don't think it's easy to make mozzarella in a restaurant, wonder what else the owner is exaggerating, customer reviews can be bare faced lies, but think about it, so can the owners reply.. the attacking pallet and you can't tell one cheese from the other insult is funny, he knew it wasn't goats cheese. Gruyere omelette does sound nice though.
This is the proper way to respond to a bad review. Very carefully call out their lies without resulting to insulting them like the Irish restaurant did.
I actually thought it was too polite. But then I'm German. It' s actualyl kind of funny to see all those Englsih language reviews complaining about bad service in Berlin restaurants. tehy are kind of right - by American standards service in germany is terrible. But noone gives a f*ck. And so you have all these one or two star reviews by tourists and people still go there.

I was thinking that too. I used to have lactose intolerance pretty badly (luckily, it has lessened over the years). I would never take Imodium for that. Your body can't process lactic acid, so you need to let it pass on through, not hold it in. I use Lactaid too; awesome stuff!
Load More Replies...Apparently the customer doesn't know what a spring pea purée is and I really doubt her diary allergie.
I know from a relative with Crohn's that immodium can be taken for severe GI issues to be on the safe side, but THREE at once? Wow.
Me: Whats the point of listening to you of you cant even spell 'allergy' right? (And also, i think you have lactose intolerance not dairy allergy cause the the allergy has much more severe symptoms cause they can lead you to the hospital)
I know few people who have problems with milk but not with parmesan or other very hard cheeses, because of the level of fermentation. Not sure if it applies to ecerybody.
B******t no one is that intolerant to dairy, besides the gastrointestinal stress he's on about is farting and gas. Big deal! Also Imodium isn't for dairy, there are specific dairy pills you can take over the counter to ease your body into dairy, it works better than an anti-diarrhoea Med too like this numpty too. It's like taking aspirin to help your hay fever ?!

In America that's illegal and you could call the police. I guess it's okay to dine and dash there. Very disgusting.

Dealing with False Complaints
The witty comebacks from the restaurant owners were really something! If you ever think about posting a false review, think twice. Or rather, don’t think about it at all! Which witty comeback did you like the most? Don’t forget to let us know in the comments. Also, share this with someone you know who has posted fake reviews. Let them know how badly it can come back to them!
I like posts like this, but they usually overdo it and after about 30 I'm done. Anyway, some of these are clearly a rude, entitled guest where others are salty immature owners.
I don’t like these reviews tbh, all we see are entitled, rude and arrogant owners.

I don't like businesses that say "We must be doing something right..we've been here for 30 years." My last job was 2 doors down from a restaurant that's been in business for 30+ years. The only reason he's been able to keep the doors open so long is that he does not pay his wait staff minimum wage (falsifies records to show he does,) he keeps food way past spoilage dates, and if ever the Health department or Labor department gets a complaint about him, he gets a heads up from his wife (who works for the health department) and his nephew (who works for the labor department) before "surprise" inspections are conducted. Just because your business has been around for 30 years doesn't mean you aren't still a crappy human being.
A restaurant near me was given a dozen 1 star reviews three months before it opened. Always wondered when Dr. Who started posting on Yelp...
the other side of the story: I ordered a dry salad with lemons on the side. The salad came with oil dripping all over it. I said that I ordered a dry salad. The waiter took it back and washed the oil off. Now it is oily and is dripping with water. I asked for a well done steak. It came out bleeding and mooing rare. I asked the waiter to take it back for a little more heat. I also asked for worster sauce on the table. It took forever with the waiter nowhere to be found. I peeked into the kitchen door thru the door window. The waiter came back from smoke break (kitchen smelled of marijuana) and told the cook I was being an a*****e. The cook threw the steak on the floor & stepped on it. I was still watching in unbelief as the waiter poured a little worster sauce in a small bowl. He spit in it. I just walked out. The waiter came running out to the car & said I had to come back in. I lost my civilization at that point & used some coarse language telling him off. WHATAJERK
I have never written an online review of an establishment. I absolutely would never write a bad review of an independant family run business. If you are unhappy with any aspect of your experience or provision of service in such places, either voice it at the time or send an email to the owners/management afterwards. For a small business that has only had a handful of reviews a couple of nasty ones can be seriously damaging. Huge chains are fair game if they don't come up to scratch. Edit - why the downvote? Small restaurants can have occasional bad days for many reasons. Doesnt justify compromising their future by encouraging others to avoid the place, simply because you personally were not happy. Otherwise it will be McD and KFC everywhere
Do you consider it "a bad day" when restaurants try and kill you? Or when they discriminate? I've had both happen to me and yes, I left a bad review online. Because I don't want people to end up dead or to get discriminated against. If I emailed the owner? If I emailed the head office? Yes, still no reply from either of them.

Then you will also see two and three-year reviews that say stuff like, "The food was disgusting, but I dont like Cajun food"...If you don't like Cajun food, why did you go to a Cajun restaurant?!?!
Why would anybody even ask for a discount? If they don't have a coupon of some sort... You don't get one

Because I don't want people to end up dead or to get discriminated against. If I emailed the owner? If I emailed the head office? Yes, still no reply from either of them.
Load More Replies...I don't put much stock in the "star" rating a restaurant has in reviews. If you Google a place and read the reviews, you will see tons of one-star reviews saying stuff like, "Food was great", "Best place ever!"...I think people accidentally push the wrong button.
