While parenting is a lot of work, it’s also a constant reminder, in between messes and tantrums, that toddlers are pretty funny. It can be difficult to properly discuss parenting, since it’s one of those things you truly can not understand until you actually do it. Non-parents are often also confused when parents will call it both incredibly rewarding and also exhausting, stressful and sometimes pretty scary. However, research suggests that the majority of parents actually see the experience as a good, fulfilling thing.
Just like going to the gym or really getting into a complicated hobby, hard work is, well, hard. But generally that is what it takes to get the results you want. So it makes sense that parents would regularly make memes or other content about their experiences. Indeed, one study found that internet use is actually higher among parents than non-parents of a similar age.

This makes sense when you realize that parents do spend a lot of time talking to other parents, seeking advice and just venting. Sometimes you do need to take the edge off and just condense your experience into a hilarious meme. If you can make memes about every hobby, experience and demographic, it only follows that the same can be true for motherhood.

My kids would be fine but I do wonder how long most parents today would make it not knowing for hours where their kids are and what they are up to.

Nah, the 60s, lol. From morning till night from the age of 3 (with my brother, 5). I ran into a car (that was slowing to turn into a side road, & luckily, only a badly bruised leg) on a busy main road (at the top of our street) when crossing to go to the park on the other side.... yep, 3 yrs old. My brother was halfway across and came back to me when he heard the screech of wheels. Fun times.... 😶

May not be right but a little bit of keeping your head down and showing some respect wouldn't go amiss. As I grew up (I'm 70) it was very much a case of "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth" which I found out to my cost a couple of times.

I'm sure my kids would be fine, actually. They know a lot of the toys (saved a lot of my toys and they play with them now) and they know to be careful in traffic and not to eat things they don't know exactly what are. Sure, they could still run amok outdoors for hours and I wouldn't know about it until someone broke a limb OR one of them ratted out the others at the dinner table. I'm sure they'd make a lot of new friends and have amazing tales to tell.

Kids? We have a 22 year old who'll walk into the room, mid-conversation, and ask "What's that? Who are we talking about?". I've had to start saying "It's nothing to do with you.". It's just bloody rude.

The subject is not sockets, Asher, it's about priorities. The mother is imagining a scenario in which her children would decide that their phone needs more care than their mother. This mother is not all right with this.

That's why these kinds of threats never work for long. I'm parenting with the barest minimum of threats (is it a threat to say you'll be hit by a car if you run on the street?) and she seems more cooperative than children who get these kinds of empty threats a lot

My kid tried very young and as I didn't bat an eye he stopped, then tried later, then stopped, repeat. I l often look at him with a mild indifference and say 'I know you're tired, we're going home soon, but there's no need to act like this because you're just making yourself embarrassed, personally I don't care '. And that's right, even if people are looking at us I DGAF. And it works.

When I was a SAHP, my now-ex husband once asked me why we only picked up right before bedtime. Not long afterwards, I had to be in the hospital for a week, so he was home with the kids by himself. He never asked that question again.

I wonder when that'll start. Right now I plan to give her access to the internet when she enters secondary school or something (but she's only 3 at the moment). I hate smartphones and tablets with unlimited access in the hands of children

At the moment we don't order anything but a drink for the 3-year-old. She wouldn't eat it anyway and she can always have some of ours. But she's a sparse eater, so there's that

It IS easier. I hate it when parents tell struggling young parents that only gets harder. It doesn't. My kids wipe their own butts now. They can tell me when something is wrong. If I sleep in they know how to feed themselves. They won't die or maime themselves if I ignore them for a couple hours. There are still challenges, yes, but the sheer physicality goes way down.

For a website who is always fast to focus on equality between genders i feel left out as a SAH dad. But if i read them gender neutral, they are all true. And I wouldn't change anything.
