We’re rapidly approaching the new year, pandas, and for most of us, this is a time to look forward. In January, I’m going to start journaling every day, stop ordering takeout and make sure that I call my family at least once a week!
But it’s always a good time to take a peek back on the past too. So today, we’ve got a list of photos that might make you feel like you’ve stepped foot into a time machine. We took a trip to the Historical Capsule subreddit and gathered some of their most fascinating pics below. The Historical Capsule subreddit has been around for less than a year, but it has already amassed an impressive 316K members. According to the group’s “About” section, members are invited to “explore fascinating old photos and videos that tell stories from days gone by, share and discuss moments that shaped history, [and] join us in celebrating the beauty of the past, one snapshot at a time.”
This community is filled with photos from past generations that might teach you more about the world your grandparents grew up in or what it was like to go grocery shopping a century ago. Even if you’re not a history buff, I’m sure you can appreciate the beauty of these photos and the fact that they’ve been preserved for so many years!
In The 1930s, A Bank Robber Named "Pretty Boy" Floyd Was Known For Destroying Mortgage Papers On Heists, Freeing Hundreds Of People From Property Debt

East German Soldier Helps A Little Boy Sneak Across The Berlin Wall, August 13, 1961
Saw this photo in a book certainly. This was taken on the day that Berlin was divided. The soldier was under orders to not let anyone across into East Berlin, but this boy who lived on the eastern side was separated from his family in the chaos. He helped the boy back across the wire to meet up with his family again, but his superior caught and punished him. It's not known what the soldier's punishment was or what happened to him.
I remember reading the story behind this famous photo online many years ago.
We’re big fans of sharing historical photos here at Bored Panda, so it’s actually not the first time we’ve featured this subreddit. And when it comes to why it’s so important to take time to look back on the past, Linked Frame notes on their blog that photography has completely changed our perception of the past.
Before we had access to photos, everything we knew about history came from stories from family members and teachers, artwork and books. Being able to see what people, places and things actually looked like has given us a much deeper understanding of those times. And we shouldn’t take advantage of that; we should continue looking through the photo albums of the past!
A U.S. Serviceman Shelters A Young Injured Japanese Boy From The Rain In Saipan In July, 1944
War makes everyone look like monsters, but really its thousands of poor men forced to fight against each other. No one wants to go to war except for the country leaders.
I say we demand that, from now on, the leaders of the countries that are all fired up to go to war should have to do the fighting themselves. In a decent sized room with no windows, televised, and armed with burlap sacks filled with horseshit. And, as a twist, the audience gets to vote for the winner. The audience should be made up of children, about 3 to 6 years old, who live in countries that aren’t involved in the conflict at all. Repeat: Children. Because they won’t be politically biased, so will only judge the fighting. Don’t worry about them choosing the bad guys. Bad guys fight dirty, and kids pick up on that really fast. Doesn’t matter if there’s only two leaders fighting, or they show up with the leaders of the countries that support them making up their teams, the only people allowed to have and use the sacks of s**t and do any fighting are the two main leaders. Their “teams” can only give them encouragement., as there won’t be any kind of audience in attendance, except by live TV.

It's why I say terrorists are stupid. It takes no brains to destroy things, but it takes smart people to build things. And the Taliban aren't building anything. Look at how many years it's been since their "revolution". They made their country into a shithole in 1979 and it's still a shithole today. They haven't improved a thing in 46 years. All those wasted lives and for what? Just so a handful of so-called men could have a little power. And to make the insult even worse, they claim it's all in the name of their religion, which it obviously isn't.

But who knows, if you ask Iranians, even Iranian women, which do you want "Strict Muslim values, like we've been told it says in some book" or "greater freedom to think and act in accord to your own vision", I'm not sure a majority chooses the latter.
Brain washing over generations is a powerful tool. Remind you the adoration of Germans for Hitler. In Iran only the elders remember how life was before and the younger may afraid the possible changes.
Load More Replies...Photography has also become an incredibly important tool for social change. Once images started appearing in the news, we weren’t able to turn away from atrocities. And people suddenly had a better understanding of important cultural moments. It’s one thing to know that people were starving during the Great Depression. It’s another, much more heartbreaking realization to see photos of emaciated children and struggling mothers.
It Is Quite Astounding To See The 600-Year Progression From Ancient Greek Sculptures!
Just a reminder, the USA is still just a bit over 200 years old and we've managed to both create and destroy Western Democracy.
While I am duly impressed by thr later examples, I have to say that the two oldest are my favourites. They are less true-to-reality but the most beautiful to me.
Mine too. Something about the simplicity draws me in.
Load More Replies...A lot of that change was due to Indian sculptures that made their way to Ancient Greece and to Roma. The mix of the two traditions resulted in Greek statues being made a lot more dynamic and sinuous, compared to the very rigid and linear positions that they were prior to that.
I can create things by molding, adding and taking away clay, but the concept of sculpting, by only taking material away seems impossible to me. That takes real vision.
Humans always find a way to express themselves and those around them.
One Cowboy And One Cowgirl From The 1880s
"Taylor finds that stereotypes about blacks in the old West abound, particularly the belief that most of them were cowboys. "That is one of the biggest stereotypes I have to contend with," he says. "In reality, cowboys were no more than three percent of the work force at any time." And although there were African American fur traders, ranchers, and homesteaders in the nineteenth century, most African Americans headed for urban areas such as San Francisco or Denver." Cowboys were mostly of European decent but everyone had a hand in settling the American West. Source - University of Washington, Quintard Taylor.

Most folks do not realize that Hawaii has a deeply ingrained cattle culture.

Evidence that kawaii is at least as old as the early 18th century.
When my mother (and I) first saw pictures of a hammershark, she thought this was a mutation or deformation caused by the tests with atomic bombs
Of course, photography also helps us understand ourselves! Societies and cultures are constantly changing. But if you can look back on what your ancestors looked like and how they celebrated holidays, you might be able to put the puzzle pieces together and figure out where your own traditions came from. At the same time, these photos can be saved for future generations to see as well, so your great-great-great grandchildren will be able to understand where they came from too.

Viewing a powerful photo can even be an emotional experience. Perhaps you see an image of an important historical moment that you vividly remember witnessing on the news or hearing about while sitting in the office on your lunch break. When we see photos of these moments, we can instantly be transported back to them and filled with the same emotions we felt back then, whether that was fear, elation, devastation, etc.

But not in the way that a lot of places depict. They weren't painted in bright flat colours, the remaining paint flakes on the statues show layering, variations in tone and hue, and texturing, they were trying to paint them realistically.
Load More Replies...One important point that Linked Frame brings up on their blog is that, nowadays, we rarely see any photos that haven’t been manipulated, or at the very least, edited. And what’s worse is that we sometimes can’t tell the difference between a photoshopped image and something that was snapped right from a camera.
Old photos are magical in the way that they just are. Sure, we can colorize them or attempt to make the images clearer. But we know that women weren’t edited to have smaller waists, and cities weren’t photoshopped to look more appealing.

That’s always the problem with religious texts, it’s all interpretation. Always reminds me of that Terry Pratchett quote: “Vimes shook his head. “That always chews me up,” he said. “People killing one another just because their gods have squabbled—” “Oh, they’ve got the same god, sir. Apparently it’s over a word in their holy book, sir. The Elharibians say it translates as ‘god’ and the Smalies say it’s ‘man.’” “How can you mix them up?” “Well, there’s only one tiny dot difference in the script, you see. And some people reckon it’s only a bit of fly dirt in any case.” “Centuries of war because a fly crapped in the wrong place?” “It could have been worse,” said Carrot. “If it had been slightly to the left the word would have been ‘liquorice.”

Not all on BP are American, and they know American history better than Americans. (Here come the downvotes)
Lucky fellow. I agree with the comment below. The same applied to the Aussies who fought in Vietnam. "All the way with LBJ" ..... baloney.
Oskar are you aware that in reality the USA has never won a war? They did not “win” the revolutionary war, France did, Britain recalled their troops to fight France in Europe. And the revolutionaries won only one major battle against British regular troops. America did not win WWI nor WWII as many misinformed Hollywood propaganda films would have you believe - USSR won the war when Hitler made the same tragic mistake Napoleon made. Most Europeans consider the Americans little more than cowards for waiting until the wars were at the end before joining in. America! Indeed! As much as I love America, I hate zealotry and jingoism and try to be objective and rational. Looking objectively, Americas record in battle is dismal!
Germany's invasion of the USSR might just have succeeded if the UK hadn't been involved - all those air attacks had a big effect; Germany had to divert a lot of its war effort to air defence and sea attack on the Western Front while suffering constant attrition to its industrial and military capacity. No single nation's effort won the Second World War. Also, I'm a European and I certainly don't consider the US cowardly for not getting involved in the two 20th century world wars until relatively late on. I mean, come on: Europeans fighting each other the other side of the Atlantic? And you want us to spend how much money and how many lives by picking a side and getting involved? I'm not a fan of the USA in all sorts of ways, but I am simply grateful that the US did in the end join in both the world wars, helping bring them to an end quicker than otherwise would have been the case - saving countless lives in the process.

It wasn't really a "fad" in the way people think today as someone commented. Most were not wealthy enough to have a portrait painted, and photographs were rare as well. So in many cases the only chance to perserve the likeness of a loved one is to take a picture at their death. (Esp true in the cas of children)
Also they didn't have the same aversion to dead people as many have today. Many western cultures today don't have 'wakes' where the deceased lies in their house for a certain number of day before the funeral. It is less common to even have a viewing of the body at all.

Read the book "Truevine" by Beth Macy. According to the Macy, it's unclear if they had actually been kidnapped or contracted to work in the circus by their mother. The reality is two albino black boys may had a better life in the circus, even being exploited, than they would have had working in the fields of southwest Virginia. It's a compelling read.

My oldest friend recently hosted one for her daughter's birthday and said she couldn't live up to my mum's skill/patience making pancakes in the shape of people's initials in the morning.

And after countless photographers went through and interacted with the environment in order to get better shots - that doll's head was obvioulsly placed there at some point by someone, I don't think that's how it was left.

A Man In A Cangue In Shanghai, Circa 1870. The Cangue Was A Device That Was Used For Public Humiliation And Corporal Punishment In East Asia Until The Early 20th Century
The writing doesn't say what he did, it reads "上海縣正堂,封" "By the Shanghai county main office (the Magistrate?), sealed". Seems to be the same on both sides, though I can't see what that is between the last two characters on the prisoner's left side of the board.

Really find that doubtful given how long it had been around. Probably just looking scornful because....well, French.
Oh, I'm sure they knew it existed, it's just they never tried it until the photograher asked them to, because they're French... I mean just look at their faces - that is the expression of someone who'll stick to their wine instead of this newfangled American swill, merci beaucoup...
