“Meanwhile In Japan”: 50 Photos People Just Had To Take In Japan (New Pics)

Sometimes Japan Doesn’t Seem Real
We visited Japan in April one year, and it was the peak of cherry blossom season: gorgeous!
I have almost this exact same photo :) I love cherry blossom season in Japan.
[oc] Japanese Moving Company Whose Service I Refused For Being Over My Budget As A Student Has Sent Me 1kg Of Iwate Rice As An Apology For Failing To Provide Me With Service In My Price Range
Sven, even if it might be hard to believe sometimes, there are people in business, that care about their customers. Potential, and the ones that buy from them. I would go back to such company, once I would be able to afford them.
Load More Replies...Behold, a company that actually cares about service, and not just money
This is not all that common here in Japan, but many companies do feel that if they ask for your business, they are obligated to provide a good product that you will like. If you do use a business for something, it is also likely that next year, you will receive a calendar and some small gift from the company. The more you previously spent, the nicer the gift.
When was that? Rice is very expensive now. They must have valued you as a customer.
Except, she wasn't a customer, she refused the service.
Load More Replies...Traveling to Japan is a dream of many people around the globe. In fact, the country attracted a whopping 36.87 million foreign tourists in 2024. Being able to witness the stunning nature in real life, devour the best sushi in the world and visit huge cities that function extremely well sounds magical. But if you haven’t been able to make it to Japan yet, you can live vicariously through the people who shared the photos on this list.
We also wanted to learn more about what living Japan is really like, so we got in touch with Tanja Warwick, aka Ryokou Girl, who has been living and working in Japan since 2015. She was kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda and explain what makes this island country so special.
Sewer Cover In Osaka, Japan
It's always the little details like this that make me happy. I love Japan.
I love looking out for all of these. The one in Fujikawaguchiko is beautiful too.
I love that these can be used as decorations in Animal Crossing.
Cats Sleeping Under The Hachiko Statue At Shibuya Station
That is thanks to the kindness of Japan's citizens. The last time I was in Japan, there was a homeless man that slept in the street a couple of blocks from my hotel. Every morning when I passed him sleeping, I noted that people had left food out for him (wrapped up), left money in a basket for him and drinks for him as well, all to enjoy once he woke up. It was pretty heartwarming to say the least.
Load More Replies...They can get their sleep and worship requirements taken care of at the same time!

It Turns Out Not All Robots Are After Our Jobs. Dawn Cafe Is Staffed By Robot Avatars Remotely Controlled By People With Severe Disabilities
It’s probably elsewhere in this list but there’s a restaurant in Japan where the people taking your order and bringing it to you have dementia or maybe it’s Alzheimers and you basically take whatever they bring back out to you. Brilliant.
I love it. People with severe disabilities can get so isolated so thisvid a nice way to give them social interactions.
“Japan has a unique history, having been closed off from the rest of the world for more than 200 years during the Edo period,” Tanja noted. “It has led to a unique culture that you won't find anywhere else.”
“Some things that make it special are the attention to detail and care that goes into everything, the close relationship with nature and appreciation for the changing seasons, and diverse landscapes,” she continued.
I Gave Birth To My Son Last Month, And Here Are Some Of The Meals I Had In The Hospital
The kitchen staff even took the time to make sure everything was plated beautifully! So much about being in the hospital is drab and depressing, but this extra care in presentation means so much. 😊
This is not the norm. It's an expensive private facility. Part of what you pay for is the good food. In the one facility I know of, the mother's last meal before discharge is especially nice. In regular hospitals, you get regular hospital food in regular plastic plates and bowls, which is what my wife got when she gave birth.
I was amazed at how wonderful the meals were when I gave birth to my daughter here in a small town in Japan. They go to great trouble to provide not only a delicious meal but one that is healthy for a new mother. And, they do not boot you out of the hospital for 5-7 days post-birth!
Miyama, Kyoto Prefecture
These are very specially preserved areas. The costs of maintaining the old-style thatch roofs are significant, but this is really old rural life in Japan. Notice the greenery around the homes. There is usually a garden for trees and flowers of the seasons and also an area for growing vegetables.
one goes thru probably 10 years apprenticeship before one knows how to fix those roofs
I Caught An Owl Mid-Yawn At The Owl Café In Tokyo
Don't support those kinds of businesses. Owls and otters are not domesticated species.
Yeah and even Rabbit Island and the fox attractions are cruel. And read up on cat cafes before visiting, not all the cafes treat their animals with decent welfare and some cafes get cats from breeders and not rescue.
Load More Replies...I hope they only roost there and have a rooftop window to come and go.
“Some things that surprised me when living and working in Japan are that, despite the reputation of ultra modern cities like Tokyo, it's still very much a traditional place. And technology from the 80s and 90s is still commonly used,” Tanja revealed. “For example, fax machines are still used in offices, and you can still go to music stores like Tower Records and Tsutaya to buy CDs.”

This Quiet Room At Narita Airport For People With Autism
I don't have autism (that I know of) but my psychotherapist said I was probably a HSP, coupled with PTSD symptoms. I would definitely use these rooms next time I'm at Narita.
I have Autism and have seen rooms like these in American airports, too.
They used to be called "prayer rooms" in many airports. Good place to cry.
I feel seen. I hope to visit your beautiful country sometime people if Japan.
These are becoming pretty common in stadiums, convention centres and festivals in Australia. Problem is they don't always educate their staff well enough about who can use it and why (it is not just limited to people with autism). There is an actor who has autism and wanted to use one at a concert and was not allowed in because she 'didn't look/act autistic'! She went on her socials and there was quite a lot of backlash on the organisers.
Meanwhile In Japan
"Ive already heard about your cousins in the china shop. I don't want no deer in my tofu parlor."
Load More Replies...I suspect they might have been talking about me. Nara-Deer-...00e112.jpg
I mean, in Japanese culture, they are considered messengers from God, so maybe he's having a good listen. But then they can go on their way again after giving their message.
This looks like Miyajima - tame deer everywhere and they’re totally cool around humans as there’s very strong messaging not to feed them and leave them alone unlike Nara deer which can be aggressive in search of food
We found the ones in Miyajima pretty aggressive too - they were definitely nicking things out of people's bags!
Load More Replies...We also asked Tanja what some of her personal favorite things about Japan are. “I love that no matter what time of year you visit Japan, there are always festivals and events tied closely to the seasons to enjoy, from cherry blossoms to summer fireworks, autumn leaves and winter illuminations,” she told Bored Panda. “Also the food is always a highlight. It's rare to have a bad meal, and eating out is so affordable.”

Yeah having two or three forklifts load at once made the pack out go so much faster. Loved it.
The post says that the sides open so it's easier to get things with a forklift, and you still need to use a forklift with regular semis (unless it's backed up to a ledge so things can roll)

What should travelers know before visiting Japan? “To plan ahead and prebook where possible before visiting popular areas and attractions, especially during peak travel times such as cherry blossom season,” Tanja noted. “Public transport is amazing, and you can get around to most places easily by train/buses.”
Finally, she recommends that travelers don’t just stick to Japan’s “Golden Route," aka the places that the vast majority of tourists visit, such as Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto and Osaka. “Think about what you want to experience instead of where you want to go, and you are likely to find much less crowded and more affordable options in other cities."
And, of course, you can find many more helpful travel tips from Tanja on Ryokou Girl!
This Pizza Box In Japan That Has A Handle In The Middle To Keep The Pizza Flat
Jeez the comments on this one. Yes it would work with smaller pizzas but probably not NY large pizzas. And I don't think there's much more cardboard here than a regular pizza box.

If You Look Closely At The Bench In Front Of The Prefectural Office, You'll See A Dinosaur
Maybe add what prefecture. It´s in Fukui, which became known for dinosaur fossils. If I remember correctly they even had a dinosaur named after the region.

We were also lucky enough to get in touch with Alyse, aka The Invisible Tourist, to hear her thoughts on this topic. She has spent plenty of time in Japan and even has detailed travel guides for visiting the beautiful country on her site.
"Japan is unique in the sense that it manages to blend the past and present so seamlessly," Alyse shared. "Whether that's different architectural styles through the centuries to old customs and traditions, Japan has embraced its cultural heritage without diluting it. I also call it the Land of Convenience, because if you can't find what you need there, it probably doesn't exist!"
"Tulip". It Was A Nice Feeling This Year Too✨
Nah. Cargo ships mean people have jobs. Sailboats mean people who are either very poor or too rich are about (usually the latter, because poor people’s boats are more likely to need rowing).

Patient as a saint while a fire was advancing in high winds. What a hero!

A Gigantic Godzilla Appears At A Dam In Saga Prefecture!
You're Correct, a cleaning crew did this with their power washers.
Load More Replies...So what are some of Alyse's personal favorite things about Japan?
"I adore that locals are considerate of those around them. This is why trains are clean and quiet, people keep left and move to the side to stop in a busy walkway," she noted. "Another big one is omotenashi - exceptional Japanese hospitality. It's how Japanese people will go out of their way to provide good service as an expectation, not doing it for tips or material incentives."
"Coming from Australia, where it's either exceedingly hot or freezing cold with no in between, I love the four distinct seasons in Japan," Alyse added. "Each is uniquely celebrated for its stunning natural scenery. And with 47 prefectures over 4 seasons, the possibilities for different experiences are endless."

Load More Replies...We also asked the travel expert what everyone should know before making the trek to Japan. "Definitely learn some local etiquette, as some things in Japan are quite different to what we are used to at home," Alyse shared. "This includes carrying our rubbish with us, not eating whilst walking, no pushing or cutting in line, taking shoes off indoors, refraining from speaking loudly on public transport... But slurping noodles loudly is a way to compliment the chef!"

"The Tokyo public transport network especially can seem daunting at first, for sure. But once you understand how it all works, it really is the world's best."

Finally, Alyse recommends that travelers focus on attractions and places that interest them personally, rather than what is a popular craze or the latest viral social media spot. "I promise queuing up for photos your entire trip is only going to result in disappointment," she noted. "Seek out the lesser-known. Take time to flâneur. Allow time for serendipitous experiences. And by doing your best to 'blend in' culturally, you're sure to have an enriching trip!"

This Tiny Vehicle I Spotted In Osaka
Cars are taxed at higher rates if they occupy larger spaces. That’s why there are a lot of ‘boxy’ looking Japanese vehicles, they cram as much car into the smallest footprint that they can. The Kei Car or K-car catagory is the cheapest to tax and insure, it also has less requirements regarding what off road parking space you have to own. This ‘car’ is an early example of what they would do to reduce the cost of motoring in cities.

I'm surprised how many people put "the love hotel I went to"... do you guys not know what those are for, and how likely it is not as clean as you think? XD
I think they know exactly what love hotels are. They're just happy to throw caution to the wind and live a little. (They are also probably reasonably clean, it being Japan.)
Load More Replies...I'm planning to take a short trip to Tokyo in May for the first time, and though it won't be a long trip, I can't wait to see some of this stuff in real life!
It cannot be THIS PERFECT in Japan... someone tell me the downsides of living in Japan, please? Keeping all my options open and want to be as informed as possible! haha ;)
Japan is a whole different world. I can never sing its praises enough.
Load More Replies...If you go to the Tokyo Tower, don't eat anything at the open restaurants, because they don't sell drinks on the Tower. Two friends of mine got corn dogs and mustard, except it was hot, hot, hot mustard and they ran around for many minutes trying to find something to wash it down , but drinks are only available on the ground floor.
